ARMY TRAILBLAZER Shares Her Proven Leadership Principles

“Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care,” is a quote that Lt. Gen. Gwen Bingham often says to make a point about leadership. “As a leader in the Army, I have gone out of my way to make everyone feel like a valuable member of the team,” she said. “When you can come to work and feel like you are appreciated and valued — you feel included. I think it’s so powerful. Inclusion is what helps make people strive to be relevant and value-added within an organization.” For the past three years, Bingham served as the U.S. Army Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management. She has led a staff of 300 military and civilian employees dedicated to improving the quality of life for 2.5 million Soldiers, Civilians and their family members assigned around the world.

She and members of Team ACSIM develop guidance, administer resourcing for the installation portfolio, and provide expertise and advocacy for all Army infrastructure and installation services to enable Total Army readiness. “Improvements in quality of life for our men and women and their Families is our focus each and every day,” Bingham said. “I think when we do this well, our Soldiers, Civilians and Families really prosper.” Bingham became the U.S. Army Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management in June 2016 and was the first female general officer to take over as the adviser on installation matters to Army senior leadership in the Pentagon.
