Tidningen Electronic Environment står åter som värd för Electronic Environment Conference, ett återkommande evenemang inom elektronikmiljö. EE Conference 2018 arrangeras parallellt med Nordens största mötesplats för den professionella elektronikindustrin, S.E.E, 2018, på Kistamässan, vilket ger en oerhört spännande mötesplats för både konferensdeltagare och utställare – en dynamisk träffpunkt för ny kunskap, nya kontakter och nya affärer.

Beroendet av elektroniska system i dagens moderna samhälle ökar, och vi ser en fortsatt accelererande teknikutveckling, såsom IoT, framför oss de närmsta åren.

Idag förlitar sig många samhällsviktiga funktioner sig på komplexa elektroniska system och trådlös kommunikation.

Dessa system ofta är mycket känsliga för bland annat elektromagnetiska störningar och annan extern påverkan, vilket utgör ett reellt hot och stor utsatthet. Det är viktigare än någonsin att ha kunskap och beredskap.

Vi söker föredrag och workshops riktade till verksamhetansvariga, teknikchefer och säkerhetsansvariga inom civila samhällsfunktioner, myndigheter, företag och försvarsfunktioner.

Därför lanserar vi nu en konferens med fokus på EM-hot, extern påverkan av elektronik samt utsatta elektroniska applikationer, för dig som arbetar inom samhällskritiska funktioner, myndigheter, företag och försvarsfunktioner.

Electronic Environment Security, Safety & Defence 2018 arrangeras parallellt med Nordens största mötesplats för den professionella elektronikindustrin, S.E.E, samt Electronic Environment Conference, på Kistamässan, vilket ger en dynamisk träffpunkt för kompetens- och erfarenhetsutbyte mellan civila samhällsfunktioner, myndigheter, företag och försvarsfunktioner.

Reflektioner

Nytt år – ny form IBLAND BEHÖVER MAN förnya sig, och nu kände vi på redaktionen (efter typ 10 år) att det var dags även för oss. Så därför presenterar vi nu en helt ny grafisk form på tidningen Electronic Environment!

Allt kanske inte ligger på exakt samma ställe som tidigare, men lugn, det tar några nummer så känns allt som vanligt igen. Vi hoppas att du gillar uppdateringen!

NU HAR VI på allvar påbörjat planeringen av

Electronic Environment Conference 2018, som även denna gång kommer att arrangeras parallellt med Scandinavian Electronic Event på Kistamässan. Call for Papers skickas ut i dagarna, och du hittar det också på sid 2-3 i detta nummer av tidningen.

Det var ett mycket lyckat drag att låta konferensen gå parallellt med SEE 2016, Nordens största mötesplats för elektronikindustrin. Vi attraherade en del nya målgrupper för konferensen, vilket alltid är en utmaning inom nischade event.

Evenemanget fick som vanligt mycket positiva betyg i utvärderingen. I denna kunde omdöme ges med poäng 1-5, där 5 var bäst, och på frågan om helhetsintrycket gav hela 95% av konferensdelegaterna betyget 3 eller högre. Så många som 93% gav betyget 3 eller högre avseende kvalitén på konferensprogrammet och 59% av de svarande uppgav att det var sannolikt eller mycket sannolikt, alltså 4 eller 5, på frågan om en eventuell medverkan på EEC 2018.

DEN STORA NYHETEN inför evenemanget 2018 är att vi arrangerar en parallell konferens till Electronic Environment Conference, under namnet Electronic Environment Security, Safety & Defence. Vi kommer då att etablera en samlingsplats för kompetens- och erfarenhetsutbyte mellan de civila verksamheterna och den militära, med fokus på elektroniska hot och utsatta elektroniska applikationer. Många samhällsviktiga funktioner förlitar sig idag på elektronik och tråd-

lös kommunikation, och många system är mycket känsliga för EM-störningar, vilket idag också är en realitet. Utöver EM-hot kommer konferensen också att inbegripa bland annat RÖS och så kallat sensorindikation med mera. Och vi fortsätter att titta på EMC-utmaningarna för Internet of Things, med ett bidrag från Kia Wiklundh och Peter Stenumgaard, FOI. Ytterligare ett matigt nummer av Electronic Environment alltså.

Civilingenjör Teknisk Fysik och Elektroteknik (LiTH 1988) samt Tekn Dr. Radiosystemteknik (KTH 2001). Arbetade fram till 1995 som systemingenjör på SAAB Military Aircraft där han arbetade med elektromagnetiska störningars effekter på flygplanssystem. Detta inkluderade skydd mot exempelvis blixtträff, elektromagnetisk puls (EMP) samt High Power Microwaves (HPM). Han har varit adjungerad professor både på högskolan i Gävle och Linköpings universitet. Peter arbetar idag till vardags på FOI. Han var technical program chair för den internationella konferensen EMC Europe 2014 som då arrangerades av Just Event i Göteborg.

Miklos har elektromekaniker- högskoleutbildning för telekommunikation och elektronik i botten samt bred erfarenhet från bl a service och reparation av konsumentelektronik, konstruktion och projektledning av mikroprocessorstyrda printrar, prismärkningsautomater, industriella styrsystem och installationer.

Miklos har sedan 1995 utbildat ett stort antal ingenjörer och andra på sina kurser inom EMC och är också författare till den populära EMC-artikelserien ”ÖGAT PÅ”, i tidningen Electronic Environment.

Under många år var Miklos verksam som EMC-konsult, med rådgivning och provning för många återkommande kunder. Mångårig erfarenhet från utveckling av EMC-riktiga lösningar i dessa uppdrag har gett Miklos underlag, som han med trovärdighet kunnat föra vidare i sina råd, kurser och artiklar.

Michel Mardiguian Michel Mardiguian, IEEE Senior Member, graduated electrical engineer BSEE, MSEE, born in Paris, 1941. Started his EMC career in 1974 as the local IBM EMC specialist, having close ties with his US counterparts at IBM/Kingston, USA. From 1976 to 80, he was also the French delegate to the CISPR. Working Grp on computer RFI, participating to what became CISPR 22, the root document for FCC 15-J and European EN55022. In 1980, he joined Don White Consultants (later re-named ICT) in Gainesville, Virginia, becoming Director of Training, then VP Engineering. He developed the market of EMC seminars, teaching himself more than 160 classes in the US and worldwide.

Established since 1990 as a private consultant in France, teaching EMI / RFI / ESD classes and working on consulting tasks from EMC design to firefighting. One top involvment has been the EMC of the Channel Tunnel, with his British colleagues of Interference Technology International.

He has authored 8 widely sold handbooks, two of them being translated in Japanese and Chinese, plus 2 books co-authored with Don White.

EMC & ELKVALITET Denna gång tittar vi på matningsspänningens inverkan på EMC-egenskaper.

EMC måste tas om hand i alla delar, såväl på elektrisk som på mekanisk systemnivå, och på alla nivåer i en utrustning på ett systematisk och planerat sätt.

EMC I HELA PROJEKTET EMC-hänsyn måste genomsyra hela framtagningsprocessen från idé till avveckling!

E

MC är ett komplext ämne. Många människor i ett företaget eller projekt är involverade. Detta kräver samarbete. EMC berör många problemområden från elläran via el- och elektronik, högfrekvensteknik till mekanik och juridik.

EMC-egenskaper uttrycks förvisso i elektromagnetiska termer, men har stor inverkan på det mekaniska utförandet; allt från mikrokretsar, kretskort och kablage till apparathöljen och installationer.

EMC är också relaterad till: säkerhet, tillförlitlighet, signalintegritet och produktkvalitet.

Anslutningskablarnas inverkan på EMC-egenskaper Först skall vi resonera kring kablarnas inverkan på EMC-egenskaper hos en apparat i allmänhet.

En fristående apparat utan anslutande kablar (t ex batteridriven) har ofta inte så stor inverkan på elmiljön runt densamma och den är inte

heller lättstörd. Detta på grund av avsaknaden av effektiva ”antenner” (= kablar) eller kopplingsvägar. För att mekaniska maskindelar, metallkapslingar eller kablar skall bli någorlunda effektiva som antenner bör de ha dimensionen större än en tjugondels våglängd (> 150 mm vid 100 MHz och 15 mm vid 1 GHz). Det innebär att eventuella emissions- eller tålighetsproblem oftast endast visar sig vid högre frekvenser.

Den grundläggande orsaken till radiofrekvent fältemission är ofta överlagrad common-mode-ström på kablar orsakade av övertoner, som genereras av switchfrekvenser. Det är en vanlig missbedömning att anta, att eftersom kablarna agerar som antenner, då måste emissionen orsakas av de signaler som kablarna är avsedda att bära. Det är vanligen inte fallet.

Nyttosignalen uppträder differentielt, dvs i normal mod, men fältemissionen orsakas av oönskade överlagrade högfrekventa ”common mode”-signaler.

För att förhindra att kablarna agerar som antenner måste vi avkoppla (kortsluta vid aktuell frekvens) till ”jord”, tillika skärm. Trixet är att hitta rätt jord! Vi behöver ej en signaljord utan en gemensam jordreferens vars potential inte varierar i förhållande till marken eller närmaste metallstruktur. En sådan del strålar inte. Vi måste ofta skapa ett sådant jord-referensplan (eller skärm). Metallhöljet kan tjäna som en lokal jordreferens.

Anslutningen måste vara lågimpediv för att filtreringen skall fungera.

(230 Vac i Europa). Den matande spänningens kvalitet kan variera, ofta förekommer det störningar överlagrat på nätspänningen. Möjlig elkvalitet specificeras av standarder, se t ex Figur 3.

Standarderna anger två olika generella elmiljöer: hushåll, kontor och lätt industri samt industri. I industrimiljö förekommer och det är tillåtet att emittera högre nivåer av störningar än i kontorsmiljö.

De flesta störningskällor finns i samma anläggning som störningsoffret.

En mycket stor andel av felfunktioner i industrimiljö orsakas av störningar, som kopplas via nätanslutningen.

Ett effektiv sätt att minska denna oönskade koppling är att undvika gemensam matning av olika användarkategorier. Till ex maskiner och datorer. Det rekommenderas att dra fram separata matningsledningar till olika grupper av förbrukare för att undvika svårlösta problem (se Figur 4 och 5).

De störningsproblem som man kan stöta på är t ex kopplingstransienter, åska, avbrott, olika typer av radiosändare. Dessa störningar orsakas av t ex termostater, kontaktorer, motorer, svetsar, växelriktare, ESD, mobiltelefoner, mm.

Några specifika problemställningar måste också nämnas i sammanhanget: Common mode spänningsskillnader och Magnetfält pga vagabonderande strömmar.

Stora spänningsskillnader kan uppträda i vissa specifika miljöer där flera spänningsmatningssystem skall samsas och apparaterna samarbeta.

Sådana är t ex tunnelbanestationer eller tågstationer. Var och en av dessa spänningsmatningssystem har sina egna referenser som kan permanent eller temporärt avvika från varandra. Detta måste tas i beaktande!

Med fyrledarsystem avses system med fyra ledare (tre fasledare och PEN-ledare), vilket används mellan transformator, huvudcentral och undercentraler. Detta system betecknas TN-C system. Lastströmmen i PEN-ledaren genererar ett spänningsfall i densamma, vilket medför störning av signalförbindelser med dubbla ”jordanslutningar”.

Dessa sk vagabonderande strömmarna ger dessutom upphov till nätfrekvent magnetfält.

EMC – en av flera utmaningar fÜr Internet of Things VISIONEN MOT Internet of Things (IoT) i full skala innebär att elektroniska system, büde trüdlÜsa och icke trüdlÜsa, kommer att bli samlokaliserade Üverallt i samhället. Dessa samlokaliseringsscenarier kommer att kännetecknas av slumpmässighet och dynamik, starkt püverkade av konsumenters vanor.

Nuvarande bedÜmningar pekar mot att lügeffektsnät drivna av batterier med lüng livslängd kommer att dominera IoT-fÜrbindelser fram till runt 2025. Typiska exempel kommer att vara i 800 MHz-bandet där lügeffektsystem für relativt lüng räckvidd. Lügeffektsystem innebär samtidigt att mottagaren kommer att ha ett lügt signalbrusfÜrhüllande i de trüdlÜsa fÜrbindelserna. Detta innebär stÜrre känsligt mot elektromagnetiska stÜrningssignaler.

EMC kommer därfÜr att vara en av flera nyckelutmaningar fÜr att nü den fulla potentialen i IoT-tillämpningar.

Nu har det projektet fortsatt med en del 2 där även bidrag frün 1964-1999 finns med. EMC Challenges Internet of Things of the

The technical development towards the full vision of the Internet of Things (IoT) will affect the area of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) in a number of ways. The methodology in achieving EMC has to be further developed in order to handle the challenges that emerges as a result of the mass increase of wirelessly consumer devices, dense co-located and in scenarios characterized by being highly dynamic, flexible and non-predictable. In this paper, some of these new challenges are highlighted and discussed. The mass-increase of wirelessly products will make the unlicensed frequency bands occupied to a considerably larger extent than today. Another overall challenge is that IoT products will be operating at considerably higher frequencies than standard EMC testing is done for today. This will directly affect the methodology and equipment for both emission and immunity testing.

This development will create a complexity of co-location scenarios that has never been seen before. New electronic devices, both non-wireless and wireless will be co-located almost everywhere in the society and these scenarios will be highly random and dynamic, strongly affected by the habits of the consumers. Predictions of the number co-located devices per area unit says up to 10000/km2 for massive IoT connected devices in dense smart cities [2], see Table 1.

Introduction The term Internet of things (IoT) refers to the internet-working of physical devices, vehicles, buildings and other items—embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity that enable these objects to collect and exchange data. Kevin Ashton, one of the founders of the original Auto-ID Center, is usually considered as the first to use "Internet of Things” in a wider sense in 1999.

The overall goal of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) is the correct operation of different equipment in a common electromagnetic environment. The general approach to achieve this goal is today typically solved by a pure technical engineering approach where standards, regulations and proven design criteria play a fundamental role. This approach may in most cases achieve EMC, at least for static cases and scenarios that do not change significantly over time. However, the more unpredictable scenarios we have, the more difficulties this static approach will experience. The current development towards IoT, where a massive increase of wireless technology via the wireless 5G development is foreseen, is expected to pave the way for the so called Networked Society. The 5G vision could be seen as the necessary technical enabler to really make IoT happen at full scale. 5G is being designed as the key enabler of the future digital world, where ubiquitous ultra-high broadband infrastructure will support the transformation of processes in all economic sectors and meet the growing consumer market demand. The wireless part of global Internet traffic is expected to grow from approximately 50% today, to about 75% in 2020, and the first 5G products are expected to be available in 2020.

certain co-location distances between devices. A simple way of relating co-location distances with co-location densities is by assuming the devices to be to be uniformly distributed in geographic position. Then the average corresponding co-location distance between devices can be determined, se Fig. 2. Examples of such applications are water meters, electricity meters and gas meters. Adding other devices for smart homes and entertainment, the density of the total number of devices may increase in the order of a factor 10-20 to about 200 000 devices/km2[4], resulting in very complex co-location scenarios for EMC.

Mass-Increase of Devices This development within IoT will highlight several new challenges for EMC. The vision of the IoT involves, in principle, all sectors of society.

Examples are smart cities, e-health, smart homes, smart grids, smart agriculture, intelligent transport systems (ITS), logistics, industrial control, environmental monitoring, education, entertainment and media.

Forecasts of the growth of the number of connected devices are done continuously by different actors. A few years ago, forecasts were in the order 50 billion devices 2020, but those forecasts have now been considered as too optimistic [1]. Fig. 1 shows a typical example of current forecasts. The largest growth in Fig. 1 is due to IoT-applications, whereas the growth of PC/laptop/tablets and mobile phones is typically estimated only to a few percent from 2016 to 2020.

Co-location distances between wireless receivers and electronics fulfilling different standard radiated emission limits have been determined in several publications, e.g.[5]. The minimum co-location distance to avoid a large risk for interference problems is highly dependent on the assumptions on e.g. interference waveform, signal-to-noise ratio for the wireless receiver and the emission standard considered. However, results from such analyses vary between a few meters up to hundreds of meters.

Thus, a rough analysis shows that the range of such minimum co-location distances fall in the interval of expected co-location densities of connected devices in IoT scenarios. This indicates that the predicted larger co-location densities will be challenging from an EMC point of view.

If we assume a density of 100 000 devices per square kilometer, which may be appropriate to model crowded areas, such as in-house or in business centers, the received power may vary as depicted in Fig. 3. The figure shows the received interference power in dBµW over an area of 100 m x 100 m. The devices are assumed to use the ISM (industrial, scientific and medical) frequency 868 MHz with a transmit power of 25 mW and are randomly distributed over the area. Since the devices are intended to have a communication distance of at least ten meters, a density of 10 000 devices or higher will introduce an increase of the background-noise level up to 65 dBμW. Systems in this frequency band typically use a channel bandwidth of 25 kHz. Assuming a noise figure

of 15 dB, the thermal noise level to -144 dBμW/Hz, adjusting for the 25 kHz bandwidth corresponding to 44 dB, the receiver noise level in such a system to be about -144+15+44 = -85 dBμW (in a 25 kHz bandwidth) Thus, the resulting interference power may exceed the receiver noise level by up to 65-(-85) = 80 dB for the worst cases and will of course cause severe interference problems. Thus, for this scenario even the lower interference levels (20-30 dBμW) in Fig. 3 will cause unneglectable interference problems.

mass increase of IoT devices, unlicensed frequency bands will be even more crowded since these bands offer quick time for implementation and due to that hardware for such bands are cheap and fast to procure.

Short Range- versus- Wide Area Networks The design of wireless networks for IoT applications involves management of trade-offs between several conflicting requirements. Such requirements may be wireless range, network connectivity, energy consumption, battery life, bandwidth, frequency band, hardware cost, operational cost and maintenance cost. It is likely to assume that lowpower, short-range networks will dominate wireless IoT connectivity through 2025 [3]. Several solutions will probably co-exist and it is likely that no single emerging technology will dominate. The requirements of future IoT networks are therefore predicted to contain large geographic coverage (nation wide), battery life up to 10 years, data rates of hundreds to tens of kilobits per second (kbps). The hardware cost should be about $5 per device [3]. The low-power wide-area networks (LPWAN) will probably move from proprietary technologies to standardized narrowband (NB) technologies, so called NB-IoT [3]. From an EMC point of view, low power devices co-located with a high density will be challenging for two reasons. Firstly, a high density of number of devices per area unit will give a higher level of the total electromagnetic interference environment. Secondly, low-power devices will have a lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the wireless connections. This means larger sensitivity to electromagnetic interference.

Need for New Interference Models

Considerably Higher Frequencies IoT devices are planned to be used for considerably higher frequencies than standard EMC emission and immunity testing are performed for today. The most far reaching visions involve radio coverage in outdoor environments for frequencies up to about 30 GHz and indoors up to about 90 GHz. This will of course affect the abilities to achieve EMC both regarding immunity and radiated susceptibility. Present EMC standard covers, with some special exceptions, radiated and susceptibility testing up to 18 GHz. Thus, for a wide range of new frequencies, both emission and immunity properties will be unknown. Furthermore, instruments and equipment for EMC testing will have to be further developed and modified to cope with the large extension of frequency bands.

Unlicensed Versus Licensed Frequency Bands Licensed frequency bands, means that individual companies (e.g. telecommunication operators) pay a licensing fee for the exclusive right to transmit on assigned channels within that band in a given geographic area. Licensing is therefore a way of ensuring that wireless operators do not interfere with each other's transmissions. Unlicensed frequency bands do not require any permission to use. The only requirement is to meet some rules associated with the particular frequency band. Typically, the maximum transmission power is regulated. One example of unlicensed frequency bands are the ISM-bands. ISM-bands are reserved internationally for the use of radio frequency (RF) energy for industrial, scientific and medical purposes other than e.g. mobile telecommunications. Examples of applications in these bands include radio-frequency process heating, microwave ovens, and medical diathermy machines but also e.g. Wi Fi applications, Bluetooth, ZigBee, wireless car keys, alarm systems and remote controls for a variety of products.

The unlicensed bands are always a challenge from an EMC point of view, especially for applications and services with requirements on availability and non-disruptiveness. Since the unlicensed bands are open for anyone who complies with the rules, the electromagnetic environment can vary considerably between different geographical areas. In urban-, industrial- and other locally crowded areas, these bands tend to be very crowded with radio signals, causing different kinds of interference problems such as disruption or time delays of transmitted data. With the

The challenge to achieve EMC in such an unpredictable environment as IoT will create will require new ways of thinking and planning in addition to traditional regulations and technical engineering. For example, modeling of electromagnetic environment produces by such devices may require the use of statistical description of a distributed electromagnetic interference density in some way, e.g. electric field strength per area unit.

The future signal environment as a result of devices related to IoT could be assumed to be constituted by a sum of several interfering signals.

Furthermore, it may be assumed that the signals, at least approximately, will be dominated as one type of waveform, but with variations in the individual waveforms taken care of by appropriate statistical modelling.

Conclusion The technical development towards the full vision of the Internet of Things (IoT) may be the most challenging issue for the EMC area since it was born about 100 years ago. In summary, the following challenges may be the largest for the EMC area: • The mass increase of low-power wireless networks means larger vulnerability to electromagnetic interference and higher interference levels due to larger concentration of co-located devices.

• The considerable extension of frequency regions up to several tenths of GHz for IoT applications requires further development of methodology and equipment for standard EMC emission- and immunity testing.

• The mass-increase of wirelessly products will make the unlicensed frequency bands occupied to a considerably larger extent than today.

• The co-location scenarios will be characterized by being highly dynamic, flexible and non-predictable. Therefore consumer habits will to a larger extent have impact on the possibility of achieving EMC.

Majoritet för återvinning av batterier och elektronik HELA 97 PROCENT av svenska folket tycker att det är ganska eller mycket viktigt att återvinna eller återanvända batterier och 96 procent har samma inställning till el- och batteridrivna produkter. Det visar en undersökning som Kantar Sifo har gjort på uppdrag av Batteriåtervinningen.

Totalt har 4 200 personer i hela landet tillfrågats om synen på återvinning och återanvändning. Jämfört med andra avfallssorter som papper och glas är batterier den avfallssort man tycker är allra viktigast att återvinna för miljön, följt av el- eller batteridrivna produkter och plast.

– Undersökningen visar att det finns ett mycket starkt stöd för återvinning och återanvändning av elektronik. Men det finns ett glapp mellan attityd och beteende. Varje hushåll förvarar i genomsnitt 6 kilo elavfall som behöver komma tillbaka in i kretsloppet igen för att jordens resurser ska räcka på sikt, säger Micaela Westerberg, kommunikationschef på Batteriåtervinningen.

71 procent av respondenterna i undersökningen tycker att det är ganska eller mycket lätt att återvinna batterier. Motsvarande siffra för elprylar är 56 procent. Bara drygt en av tio (14%) tycker att det är ganska eller mycket svårt att återvinna batterier. När det gäller återvinning av elprylar är det något fler, drygt två av tio, som tycker att det är svårt. En samtidigt gjord undersökning bland 1 000 personer i hela landet visar att fyra av tio inte känner till att det går att återvinna i butiker som säljer elektronik.

– Sedan ett och ett halvt år tillbaka går det att lämna in sin gamla elpryl i butiken när man köper en ny. Det har blivit mycket lättare att återvinna, liksom att återanvända och dela. Varje dag poppar det upp nya loppisgrupper och delningssidor i sociala medier, säger Micaela Westerberg.

Preamble. Our former EMC articles reviewed four of the 5 principal conduction and radiation coupling mechanisms, as they affect equipment/system susceptibility and emissions.

The last ones (EMC Articles #6 and 7) were addressing the shielding of equipment boxes, from the smaller hand-held devices up to large cabinets or even entire rooms.

The present article is covering the 5th, very important coupling mechanism: how the various disturbances that exist on the power mains (public AC distribution, ship or aircraft AC distribution, vehicle dc distribution... etc) can find their way from their source down to the electronic components of a system?

Reciprocally, some active elements in our equipments (dc-dc and ac-dc switch mode regulators, fast IGBT and thyristors, variable speed drives, fast logic circuits, etc‌) can in turn become EMI sources, polluting the power distribution to the prejudice of other users. And like for the other coupling paths, many solutions that solve power line suceptibility problems will also reduce conducted emissions.

Whatever your installation, you must know at least approximately what is the wiring and grounding scheme of your power distribution, from the power source down to the users. This knowledge is important for: • understanding and estimating the coupling factors • understanding the CM (Common Mode) to DM (Differential Mode) conversion • selecting the most appropriate, and economical filter • selecting the proper characteristics for surge protection devices.

Fig.1 shows the most common configurations for power distribution schemes. Depending on the applications, a power distribution can be fairly simple: in motor vehicles the battery (+) is running in the entire harnessing, the (-) return conductor being the metallic car body. It is generally more complex with the (+) and (-), or Phase and Neutral, running together in the entire Power Distribution Network. In houses and professional buildings, the Ph and N wires are run along with a third wire, acting as a safety lifeline to the earthing electrode(s), where the Neutral of the power source ( Entry Transformer or Power Plant) is also grounded. Therefore as shown on the schematic, we have in general: a) a DM impedance between the hot wire and its return. b) a CM impedance between either one (or both) power wires and the local structure ground or chassis. c) I f a there is safety earth (green/yellow) wire, two values for CM impedance can be considered: • The Ph+N wires vs the earthing wire, which is only valid as long as the earthing wire is sufficently short and the frequency low enough for considering this wire as the earth potential.

• The Ph+N+ Earth wire altogether vs the real local ground, which can be a structural ground, concrete slab, ship hull etc ….In this later case, the CM currents will flow in the Power + Earthing wires in the same direction, returning to the Power source via the local ground reference.

2. Power Mains Impedance This is the impedance that will be seen by an equipment when looking toward its power source. Figure 2 shows the general impedance profile of urban power distribution, made after compilation of wide statistical surveys in major cities, worldwide. The thin dotted plots are the upper and lower 10% of the measured impedances (that is less than 10% of the measured data points were above or below these values). Shown for comparison is the profile of a Line Impedance Stabilization Network that is deemed to represent the average impedance value of urban power mains (Re. our Article #2, Military & Civilian EMC Norms).

Knowing the equipment input impedance is important too, because it affects the behavior of the equipment to EMI coming in, as well as filters and surge suppressors selection. Without EMI filter, the impedance at input terminals is that of the front-end transformer (often the1st regulator), with its secondary load transferred to the primary. If there is no front-end transformer, the power input being dc or rectified ac, the DM input impedance is low, being that of the direct-polarized rectifiers and associated buffer capacitor. When the power input is isolated from the equipment frame or signal ground, as often the case with 230V/50Hz power, the CM input impedance is high at low frequency, decreasing progressively when F increases, because of the parasitic capacitance of the floated circuits 500

Both CM and DM Power Mains impedances must be considered.

Values depends on the application : public network, vehicle, aircraft, ship etc…. which dictate a typical length of wiring from the source to the users and the Neutral, or (-) conductor grounding practices. In any case, the overall shape of Power Mains impedances is the same, when seen from the end user Power Entry terminals, or simply the wall outlet : • from dc to a few kHz, it is basically the ohmic resistance of the wires plus the source resistance, this latter being obtainable from alternator or substation transformer short-circuit current.

• From a few kHz to ≈ MHz, the impedance increases linearly with frequency, since it is dictated by the self inductance of the mains wires, the wide spread of values being due to the overhead or buried type of wiring, the proximity of a ground plane, the number of users in parallel, etc …

• Above the MHz region, the impedance stabilizes around a mean value of 50Ω for CM (line-to-ground) and 100Ω for DM (line-to-line), corresponding to the line characteristic impedance.

4. Major Power Mains Disturbances Power line disturbances are a frequent cause of equipment malfunction or even damage. They can be quasi continous like HF noise superimposed to the normal mains voltage, waveform distorsion and notches, or incidental, like transient overvoltages, spikes, short partial or total voltage drop ( Fig.3). A majority of them is not due to the quality of the power source, but to the operation of the various users, whose current demands are often irregular or pulsed, causing voltage dips or surges on the distribution. Lightning strokes on, or nearby the power lines are also a frequent cause of severe overvoltages.

• Slow or steady fluctuations of line voltage can reach -/+ 10%, and are regarded as normal. All modern equipment are equipped with regulators that can easily handle such variations • Flickering: periodic, very low frequency undervoltage, causing lamps blinking

• Ripple or HF noise riding over the supply voltage can be caused by poor filtering of switch-mode regulators, or strong ambient RF field coupling onto the power lines. These rarely exceed a few volts and are easily reduced by EMI filtering • Harmonic distorsion and "notches" in the AC voltage sinewave are caused by currents peak drawn by non-linear loads of the various users • Unipolar or ringing transient overvoltages and spikes can often exceed hundred Volts, superimposed to the AC (or dc) voltage. Extreme values of 4-6kV can be reached with severe lightning indirect effects or Fast Switching transients. These can be damaging and require transient suppressors.

While practically no modern equipment, with its fast digital circuits, switch mode power suply regulators and eventually RF devices, could meet EMC requirements without an efficient filtering, EMI filters are too often choosen on an empirical basis or a vague belief in manufacturers catalog performances.

A good EMI filter must: a) attenuate the incoming power line noise to make the equipment immune to the most severe DM and CM agressions expected in its normal environment b) attenuate the HF noise caused by the equipment to its own power input, both DM and CM, such as it does not violate conducted EMI emissions limits Both a) and b) performances must be achieved in a system whose source and load DM and CM impedances are poorly defined. On top of these challenges, the filter must comply with size, weight and cost limitations, plus constraints on maximum permitted values for line-to-ground capacitance and high voltage withstanding tests. Needless saying, a filter is generally the result of a tight trade-off …

What is the required filter attenuation ?

= 72 – 20 = 52dB @ 300kHz

5.3 Number of elements in a filter

– Filter criteria Regarding EMI Emissions The attenuation must be such as the HF noise generated by our equipment on its power input (CM and DM) does not violate conducted EMI emissions limits.

Attenuation: A(dB) = Vemi (dBµV(w/o filter) - VdBµV(spec. limit) Example 2: Early testing on a prototype of our equipment has shown spurious harmonics of the switchmode power supply with amplitudes of 104dBµV from 350kHz up to 3MHz. The EN 55022 class B limit is: • 350kHz: 50dBµV • 1MHz: 46dBµV What is the required filter attenuation ?

Answer: • 350kHz: AdB = 104 dBµV – 50 dBµV = 54dB • 1MHz: AdB = 104 dBµV – 46 dBµV = 58dB * Remarks: – When substracting dBµV from dBµV, result is in dB, since arithmetically we are making a ratio of two voltages.

– the filter requirement can be based on 54dB @ 350kHz, which will also satisfy the 58dB goal at 1 MHz : filter attenuation normally increases with frequency.

The number of poles in the filter (that is the number of L,C elements that are cascaded) is determined by the desired attenuation at frequency Femi, and by Fco, the cut-off frequency (or -3dB point), below which the filter has no attenuation. At a first glance, it would seem, for instance that a powerline filter, – must exhibit no attenuation at all for 50/60Hz – start attenuating any undesired frequency above say100 or 150Hz. This would be a perfect, but enormous and expensive filter, because of the physical size of the capacitors and inductors. These are only found near large loads (greater than tens or hundreds of kWatts) for correcting the power factor of heavy inductive loads, or reducing harmonic distorsion on the utility side, upstream. So generally, the cut-off frequency of line filters for individual equipments have Fco values in the 10-30kHz range. Fig.6 give the attenuation of any filter, given its cut-off Fco and numer of poles (n).

Example 3: With the filter of example 2, we were looking for 54dB at 350kHz. Assuming a cut-off at 10kHz, how many poles our filter should have?

Answer: From Fig.6, we see that, given Femi /Fco = 350kHz / 10kHz = 35, a 1st order filter is not enough, our filter must be at least a 2nd order (n=2)

5.4 Influence of actual source and load impedances One must beware of filter manufacturer's data. They are generally measured in a 50Ω/50Ω set-up (per Mil Std 222), and actual in-situ attenuation may differ significantly. Actual insertion loss is strongly dependent on the value of the impedances seen on both sides, to such extent that the performance shown on the data sheet is probably the only one you will never get ! Table Fig.7 shows the preferred choice for the 4 possible impedances configurations ( ref.1). One simple, flawless rule that suffers no exception is : "With filters, capacitors should look toward high impedances both sides, inductances should look toward low impedances, both sides".

Example 4: What are the maximum value of filtering capacitor (Line-to-Line) and inductor we can accept for a 230V equipment with 10A of normal line current?

Answer: The 10A / 50Hz current can be translated into an equivalent filter load of 230V / 10A = 23Ω. Thus, maximum values are: C(µF) ≤ 32/ 23 = 1.4 µF , L(mH) ≤ 0.032 x 23 = 0.73mH

5.5 Coarse approximation for 50/60Hz filter components By default of a more accurate calculations, the following rule of thumb can be used to define conservative, maximum values for the filter elements. The rationale is that, for an ac power mains, we do not want the filter capacitor to derive uselessly too much 50Hz or 60Hz current from the power mains. All the same, we would not like our filter inductance to cause unacceptable 50Hz or 60Hz voltage drop. If we define 1% as a tolerable impact on ac current consumption and input voltage, we get: Xc ≥ 100 ZL and X L ≤ 0.01 ZL with Xc, X L being the impedances of filter capacitor and inductance at the power mains frequency, and ZL the equivalent load imedance. For a 50Hz ac input, using more practical units for filter components : C(µF) ≤ 32/ ZL and L(mH) ≤ 0.032 ZL If there are several capacitors like in a "Pi" filter, the formula applies to all the capacitors in parallel.

For the CM mode filter capacitors mounted line-to-chassis, that is to the earth connection, the constraint is a safety issue. In European countries the maximum permitted 50Hz leakage current is 0.5mA for the most severe applications (domestic appliances), medical devices excepted. So, these capacitors, termed "Y" type are generally limited to 5nF, with a 2.7kVdc overvoltage survival test.

5.6 Recommendations for Filters mounting As much as its performances, the way a filter is mounted is crucial to its effectiveness. It should be installed as close as possible to the equipment wall opening where the power cord passes, the best being to have it mounted through the wall itself (See Fig 8). Filter case must be the metallic type, making a tight metal-to-metal contact with the equipment box, or at least with a metal barrier. Wiring on the line side of the filter should never be bundled with those on the load side.

5.7 Why Transient Suppressors must be preferred to filters for high energy transients Although often thought of as "clean-it-all" components, filters, being low-pass elements are unefficient against energetic pulses, with duration exceeding a few µsec. This is because long pulses have a large energy content in the low frequency range, where the filter has no attenuation.

This is pictured on Fig.9, showing the response of a filter for two pulse waveforms having a same 1kV amplitude. The short 100ns pulse falls down much before the filter has been charged up to the peak value, so the pulse is reduced to 10v, with its duration stretched over > 10µs. By comparison, the same 1kV pulse with 50µs duration (a lightning induced transient for inst.) is lasting long enough for the filter to get charged up to the peak value. What is needed is a component that is not frequency-selective but amplitude selective, as seen next.

"Solid State gas-tubes": Solid State versions of the spark gap exist in form of thyristor-based crowbar devices that turn on when a certain voltage threshold is reached, putting the line in short-circuit, protecting the equipment components and eventually triggering a breaker or fuse.

6. Transient Voltage Suppressors Suppressing high voltage, energetic surges is the role of Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) like Varistors, Transzorbs or Gas tubes. These non-linear devices are an open circuit up to a breakdown value, above which they become abruptly shunting elements with large current capacity. We will review the 3 principal types of TVS: MOV, TransZorb and Gas Tube

6.1 Metal Oxyde Varistors (MOV) They are avalanche devices, with an "Off" resistance ≥ 10^6 Ω. When the applied voltage reaches the avalanche threshold (Fig.10), their "ON" resistance drops to a few Ohms. Their main features are: Advantages: • fast response, in the nsec range • low cost • fair energy handling (20J for a 14mm device) Drawbacks: • open circuit destructive mode when Imax is exceeded: can be a drawback, or an advantage, depending on the application • slanted ∆I/∆ slope, causing the actual clamping voltage for Imax to be 2 or 3 times the Vbreak • large parasitic capacitance (a few nF) that must be taken into account

6.2 Zener Diode-based TVS ( Transzorb®, Transil®) These are special Zener diodes with enhanced power dissipation capability. Their Vbr threshold is more accurate, with a much sharper ∆I/∆V characteristic.

Advantages: • fast response < nsec • almost vertical ∆I/∆V slope, thus a tight clamping voltage at Imax, typ ≤ 1.5 xVbreak • fair energy handling Drawbacks: • short-circuit destructive mode when Imax is exceeded: can be a drawback, or an advantage, depending on the application • large parasitic capacitance (a few nF) that must be taken into account

6.3 Gas Tubes Gas tubes are a modern version of the air gap arrestor that was based on the arcing of a calibrated gap when the air breakdown voltage is exceeded. Modern gas tubes consist in a sealed envelope filled with low pressure gas and a precise interval between the electrodes Advantages: • high current handling capability since the terminals are pactically shorted during the arcing • a low parasitic capacitance (a few nF) that must be taken into account

6.4 Selecting the proper surge suppressor The selection steps are summarized below: • select a triggering voltage (Vbr) ≈ 10-20% above the highest peak voltage of the power line.

• estimate the maximum peak current of the transient pulse. It can be found from the transient immunity specification applicable to the equipment. A better figure can be derived from the I,V load curve of the test generator, after substracting the clamp voltage from the generator open voltage.

7. Isolation Transformers An isolation transformer has distinct primary and secondary windings, breaking the CM ground loop between the external power lines and the equipment or system. The primary-to-secondary magnetic coupling allows the normal transfer of the DM (line-to-line) voltage, while the galvanic isolation prevents the CM voltages from passing thru the transformer. An ordinary isolation transformer is an adequate barrier for opening low frequency ground loops between an equipment (or an entire installation) and the power mains. But as frequency increases, the high value of the barrier isolation (typically > 10^6 Ω) becomes shunted by the inter-winding capacitance. This capacitance is ranging from 50100pF for small equipment transformer up to several nF for transformer in the kVA range, causing the primary/secondary protection against loop currents to almost disappear around a few MHz. Special winding sequence and more physical separation between the winding stacks can improve the CM rejection by about 10dB.

7.1 Faraday shielded Isolation Transformers For more HF isolation the best technique is to use a Faraday-shielded transformer. (Ref.2) A non-closed foil is wound between the primary and secondary windings and grounded locally, such as a CM voltage appearing on either side is stopped by the shield, and the capacitive current is sunk to the chassis or structural ground. (Fig.11). An other advantage of an isolation transformer is to allow recreating locally an earthed Neutral on the secondary side, in a certain zone of a large facility.

8. Back-Up and Uninterruptible Power Supplies When the problems are caused by serious disturbances, or total outages of the normal ac mains, the ultimate resource is to locally re-create a more dependable power delivery, using line conditioners or Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS).

A line conditioner is a special transformer with an automatic regulation circuit on its secondary. For power line over or under voltages like +/20%, these devices can provide a secondary voltage within 5%of the nominal value. With modern electronic equipments using switch-mode power supplies, this feature has less interest because switch-mode can keep a constant dc output even with primary voltage varying within 100- to-250V. Yet, there are still many electrical equipments (motors, machine-tools, lighting appliances) whose longevity rely on an ac supply within 5% tolerances. But, except for ferro-resonant transformers that can keep-up with one missing cycle (10ms for 50Hz ac), a line conditioner has no energy storage and cannot make-up for a long 50% voltage drop or a total outage.

A UPS is an ac/dc + dc/ac converter coupled with a battery bank. It can provide a well regulated ac output, even during a momentary, full interruption of the regular ac mains. Two basic principles are used: "Off-line" (or standby) and "On-line". For both devices, the autonomy is depending on the size, in Amp-hours of the battery storage.

With the Off-line type, the loads are normally fed by the regular ac supply, while the ac/dc converter is keeping the battery bank fully charged. In case of ac mains shortage, the ac distribution to the secured loads is automatically switched on the dc/ac inverter, until the regular ac mains return to normal. Notice that this system provides no protection to HF disturbances and transients of the normal ac mains. It is the simplest system, typically used for small installations, like small offices,shops etc… where most of the sensitive equipments like appliances, PCs and the like are normally equipped with EMC protection.

With the On-line type, the secure loads are always supplied from the dcac inverter, hence decoupled from the regular ac mains, which serve only to charge the battery bank. In case of inverter failure, a no-interruption static switch is transferring the privelegied load line to the regular ac.

This static switch is, in turn, a possible cause of EMI problems because the solid-state switches are a mediocre isolation barrier against high frequency. This can be avoided by careful EMC filtering and transient protection of the back-up line.

One earliest cause of user-created disturbances to the power mains have been the ac-dc rectification and gate-controlled rectifiers used in many equipments. The increasing use of high frequency converters like Switch-mode power supplies and inverters, variable speed drives, light dimmers, fluorescent lights, has shifted the noise emissions towards higher frequencies, causing both conducted and radiated EMI issues. In this respect, EMC filters should be regarded not only as a cure against conducted interference up to ≈ 30 MHz, but also against radiated emissions from the power cord at frequencies > 30 MHz.

9.1 Poor Power Factor and sinewave distorsion caused by non-linear loads With a single wave ac rectification like on Fig.12, the current Ic charging the tank capacitor C is not a sine wave: it is a short current peak whose the product Ic x duration (that is Coulombs) is in turn, delivered to the load for a minimum ∆Vr ripple on the dc output. Since power mains is not a zero impedance source, this brief, but high amplitude current is causing a small voltage collapse on the tip of the V0 ac sinewave. Similar phenomena occurs with full-wave rectification or 3-Phase rectification (6 diodes or 6 gate-driven thyristors). All these schemes are causing "notches" in the ac mains voltage waveforms. Distorsions appear as harmonics, spoiling the power factor (the ratio of the fundamental current to the rms addition of all the harmonic terms I1, I2, I3 etc …➔ In). In civilian applications, maximum distorsion is ruled by IEC 555-2 norm, which require a control of the power factor by the end users of the power utility. The solutions consist in adding inductances in front of the capacitor, smoothing the risetime of the current demand, or using a Power Factor Controller (PFC), which is an active regulator acting as a dynamic current source.

9.2 HF emissions caused by Switch Mode Power Supplies and Inverters Switchers are the main cause of conducted emissions, violating the Military and Civilian RFI limits by as much as 40 or 50dB for unfiltered items. Several mechanisms, internal to the switcher, are contributing to these emissions (Fig 13): • The CM conducted emission path is generally the major limits violator, for equipments supplied in 115v or 230V ac. The leakage current is caused by the stray capacitance of the switching transistor, IGBT or MOSFET to their heatsink or nearby chassis. Leakage current (Icm) closes by the chassis ground, returning via the power mains impedance then back to the equipment Ph and Neutral input wiring. For testing, the noise level is measured at the LISN socket.

• Next to the CM current, the DM current that circulates in the power input wires is due to the ESR, ESL of the switcher input capacitor bank. Since these capacitors have parasitic series resistance (ESR) and self inductances (ESL) the flow of the main switching current creates a differential voltage across the primary input. a) For the first harmonics of the switcher, the CM current driven by the dV/dt of the switches into the stray cap C1, behaves as a high impedance source (current source). Therefore, according to the table Fig.7, the filter should have at least line-to-chassis (CM) capacitors looking toward the high impedance.

b) To the countrary, the DM voltage, appearing across a low impedance - typically < 1Ω below a few MHz, behaves almost as a perfect voltage source. Therefore, using the table Fig.7, the filter should have at least, an inductance looking toward the low value ESR of the primary capacitor.

As a result of a) and b), the most appropriate filter structure is shown in Fig. 14) It is optimized against CM and DM, as a 2nd order filter (40dB/ decade). The DM choke is sometimes provided by the leakage inductance of the double-wound CM choke, representing substantial space and cost savings.

Some manufacturers of "Off The Shelf" (OTS) SwitchMode PowerSupplies incorporate an EMI filter in their modules, some others do not.

So, equipment designers using OTS regulators should check if the EMI conducted emissions are documented by the vendor. Whatever they design their own filter or they plan for a commercial item, they should look at the most appropriate filter schematic, as described above.

Produktnytt New hydronium-ion battery presents opportunity for more sustainable energy storage A NEW TYPE of battery developed by scientists at Oregon State University shows promise for sustainable, high-power energy storage. It’s the world’s first battery to use only hydronium ions as the charge carrier.

The new battery provides an additional option for researchers, particularly in the area of stationary storage.

Stationary storage refers to batteries in a permanent location that store grid power – including power generated from alternative energy sources such as wind turbines or solar cells – for use on a standby or emergency basis.

Hydronium, also known as H3O+, is a positively charged ion produced when a proton is added to a water molecule. Researchers in the OSU College of Science have demonstrated that hydronium ions can be reversibly stored in an electrode material consisting of perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydridem, or PTCDA. This material is an organic, crystalline, molecular solid. The battery, created in the Department of Chemistry at Oregon State, uses dilute sulfuric acid as the electrolyte.

Graduate student Xingfeng Wang was the first author on the study, which has been published in the journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition, a publication of the German Chemical Society.

– This may provide a paradigm-shifting opportunity for more sustainable batteries,” said Xiulei Ji, assistant professor of chemistry at OSU and the corresponding author on the research. It doesn’t use lithium or sodium or potassium to carry the charge, and just uses acid as the electrolyte. There’s a huge natural abundance of acid so it’s highly renewable and sustainable.

Ji points out that until now, cations – ions with a positive charge – that have been used in batteries have been alkali metal, alkaline earth metals or aluminum.

– No nonmetal cations were being considered seriously for batteries,” he said.

The study observed a big dilation of the PTCDA lattice structure

during intercalation – the process of its receiving ions between the layers of its structure. That meant the electrode was being charged, and the PTCDA structure expanded, by hydronium ions, rather than extremely tiny protons, which are already used in some batteries.

– Organic solids are not typically contemplated as crystalline electrode materials, but many are very crystalline, arranged in a very ordered structure, Ji said. This PTCDA material has a lot of internal space between its molecule constituents so it provides an opportunity for storing big ions and good capacity.

The hydronium ions also migrate through the electrode structure with comparatively low “friction,” which translates to high power.

– It’s not going to power electric cars, Ji said. But it does provide an opportunity for battery researchers to go in a new direction as they look for new alternatives for energy storage, particularly for stationary grid storage.

Channel Operating Margin â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a new method to compliance check high speed serial links

Abstract. The Channel Operating Margin (COM) is a figure of merit for a channel derived from a measurement or simulations of its scattering parameters.

COM is a method to compliance check if a channel will work with a variety of different transmitters and receivers. The COM method reduces the overdesign that many other compliance check methods suffer from. The risk of overdesign increases with the speed of the link. The higher the speed is the higher is the risk of overdesign with added extra cost as result.

III. Compliance check of high speed serial links

In the design of high speed serial links it is important to verify that a channel will work with a bit error rate (BER) equal or lower than required. In many cases the transmitter and the receiver are unknown circuits. For example, a backplane link might live for 10 years or more.

In the design phase, of the backplane, the designer does not know what daughter cards will be used with the backplane 10 years from now. To design the backplane, to handle all possible existing and future coming transmitter and receiver circuits with required BER, is very difficult without support from a standard. Standards describe requirements on the channel to secure to work with varying types of existing and coming circuits. For example, specify IEEE 802.3 [1] the requirements for Ethernet, and OIF for the electrical part of an optical link [2].

Traditional methods for compliance check, with specified parameters in frequency domain, often gives an overdesign with added extra costs as result. With increasing speed the over design tends also to increase.

With speeds of 25 Giga bit per second (Gbps) or higher the traditional method will reject many channels that in reality works. COM is a new method to compliance check a channel. COM reduce the over design and gives a rater secure check of the channel.

For example Ethernet specification [1] states that a protocol of the compliance check of the link must be written. This document is called ‘Protocol Implementation Compliance Statement’, PICS. The protocol consist of several sub parts as • Implementation identification • Protocol summary • Major capabilities/options • Functional specifications • Transmitter characteristics • Receiver characteristics • Channel characteristics • Environmental specifications Table 1 below shows the part of the compliance statement in PICS for the channel of a 100GBASE-KR4 link, a 100G backplane link. Here is COM stated as the compliance check method.

This paper will mainly focus on the compliance check of the channel between the transmitter and the receiver.

II. High speed serial link A high speed serial link consist of a transmitter circuit, a channel and a receiver circuit, see figure 1. The thru channel is normally specified from the transmitter circuit solder ball to the receiver circuit solder ball. To this thru channel is crosstalk channels added. The crosstalk channels are also normally specified from the aggressor transmitter circuit solder ball to the victim receiver circuit solder ball. Different types of equalizers are used to compensate for losses and reflections etc. in a channel.

In the transmitter a Feed Forward Equalizer (FFE) is normally placed.

The FFE has a de-emphasis function. In the receiver a Continuous Time Linear Equalizer (CTLE) is normally placed. The CTLE is a peaking filter that gains the higher frequency spectra of the signal. Both FFE and CTLE will compensate for the attenuation of the signal caused by the losses in the channel. Losses increase with frequency and both FFE and CTLE gain up the high frequency spectra. A Decision Feedback Equalizer (DFE) is normally place in the receiver.

DFE is a nonlinear equalizer mainly handling inter symbol interference originating from, for example, dispersion caused by losses in the channel, and reflections. Equalizers cannot handle crosstalk noise but the signal to crosstalk noise ratio might be influenced by the equalizers settings.

IV. Different compliance check methods Compliance check can be done in different ways. Below are listed some methods.

A. Set up a link with existing hard-ware (HW), and measure the BER. To setup a working link and check the BER require working HW. The major drawback with this method is that the HW is required and then the design and HW production must be finished before a compliance check can be performed. This will limit or eliminate the possibility the check for compliance in the design phase. The compliance check will be performed very late in the design process. Also, only the today existing circuits can be used in the check. Future coming circuits cannot be checked as they do not exist. And we normally do not know the performance of the transceivers used in the check. The circuits might be ‘5-star’1 circuits that can handle severe problems in the channel. In a future use, ‘1-star’ circuits might be used and the link might fail due to the poor channel.

B. Simulation with specific circuit model.

To make a simulation of a channel with models of real transmitters and receivers will give, if correct models are used, a good estimation of the BER in the link. Simulation could be performed with models as, for example, IBIS-AMI. This type of simulation can be done in the design phase of the channel and do not require HW to measure on. One drawback of this method is that simulation models exist only for today existing circuits. No verification can be done for future coming circuits.

Also, the quality of circuits, used in the simulation, might be a ‘5-star’ circuits that can handle severe problems in the channel and cause problems in future with the link, when other non ‘5-star’ circuits are used as discussed in section A of this chapter.

C. Compliance check with plots of characteristics.

The traditional compliance check of channels is to check if a plot of some characteristics of the channel is on the right side of a limit line.

Such characteristics are for example, insertion loss (IL) and return loss (RL). Figure 2 shows example of how an IL and a RL are checked toward limit line.

A number of characteristics need to be checked. The higher the bit rate is the more characteristics need to be checked. The limit lines should be set to a level that, if all characteristics touch its limit line, the system should still work. If one characteristic pass the limit line the system might get a too high BER. But a channel with large margin to the limit line for one characteristic might be allowed to pass the limit line for another characteristic and still work fine. To have all requirements on the right side of the limit lines will generate an over design. A larger margin than required will be built in into the system.

D. Compliance check with COM One coming method to compliance check of a channel is to use the COM method. The COM method is described in the next chapter. COM will reduce the over design and also secure, with high probability, to work with future coming circuits. COM is developed from StatEye and other similar statistical simulation tool for compliance check.

V. Compliance check with COM COM is a simulation method with generic transmitters and receiver included together with the channel. The generic transmitters and receiver models are defined in the link standard. Produced transmitters and receivers must fulfill the minimum requirements of the standard.

A real circuit used in a link will then be equal or better than the model used in the COM compliance check. This gives a future proof verification of the channel as the future coming circuits is as good as or better than the model used in the compliance check.

The circuit models include the minimum required equalizers, filters etc. as specified in the standard. The simulation models also include a model of the package. All transmitter or receiver, placed on the market, needs to be checked if they fulfill the minimum requirements for the generic COM circuit. The procedure to verify a transmitter or a receiver is specified in, for example, the standard IEEE 802.3 [1]. If in practice a better circuit than the default specified in the standard is used the COM method will also result in an overdesign. But this overdesign will be smaller than the older traditional methods.

VI. Function of COM The COM procedure is specified, for example for Ethernet, in Annex 93A in IEEE 802.3 [1]. COM for Ethernet shall be calculated using the method described in this annex.

COM is related to the ratio of a calculated signal amplitude to a calculated noise amplitude as defined by equation (1).

In the figures one can see that the IL shows large margin to limit line but RL pass slightly the limit line. Strictly, this channel will not pass the compliance check as the RL does not fulfill the requirements. But in practice, will the channel probably work as the large margin in IL will allow more RL. It is difficult to know the coupling between different characteristics in frequency domain and its influence on BER. It is then difficult to perform a ‘give and take’ approach between characteristics with large margin and characteristics with no margin.

Where As is the amplitude of the sampled signal, at the receiver, after all equalizers see figure 3. Ani is the peak to peak amplitude of the noise at the sampling point given target detector error ratio for the channel (DER0) see figure 4. As the noise consists of random parts its peak to peak amplitude will increase with time. So Ani is calculated to be the noise level at given DER0. DER0 is the bit error rate at the sampler in the receiver. After the sampler a forward error correction block (FEC) can be used. If FEC is used the BER after FEC will be lower as several faulty bits can be corrected. So several faults caused by the channel will be corrected in FEC and the link will see a much lower BER than DER0.

For example a DER0 of 10-5 gives after FEC a BER = 10-12. But FEC introduce extra latency of the data to pass the link. Some applications cannot accept this extra latency and can then not use FEC. The COM value is, in one way, the signal to noise ratio given in dB.

The backplane channel and cable assembly for Ethernet states that, the COM value shall be greater than or equal to 3 dB for each COM test.

This minimum value allocates margin for practical limitations on the receiver implementation as well as the largest step size allowed for transmitter equalizer coefficients. The compliance check is built on statistical calculations, simulations and other limitations. COM can then not guarantee that the channel will work with given BER for all configurations if margin is very low. But the probability to fail is rather small.

In the COM calculations it is assumed that the link, including transmitter and receiver (not including DFE), is a linear and time invariant system (LTI-system). Linear means that the signals are linear added on top of each other. Or more mathematically, the relationship between the input and the output of the system is a linear map. For example a crosstalk signal is linear added to the thru signal and then the receiver signal is the sum of the thru signal and all crosstalk signals. Time invariant means that whether we apply an input to the system now or T seconds from now, the output will be identical except for a time delay of the T seconds. The LTI-system allows calculation of the signal at the receiver as a pulse response. A summation of large number of pulses distributed in time gives the signal train.

Observe there is no compliance EYE-mask at the receiver sampling point in the calculation of the COM value. It is only the quota between signal and noise at the sampling point.

The procedure to calculate COM is given in IEEE 802.3 Annex 93A. The channel must be described as a differential-mode scattering parameters, S-parameters. S-parameter models for the thru channel and all the crosstalk channels. Around this channel model is packages, equalizers etc. added. Parameters for the packages, equalizer characteristics, etc. for 100GBASE Ethernet are given in the standard IEEE 802.3.

VIII. COM reference model Figure 6 above shows the COM reference model given in IEEE 802.3 Annex 93A. The pulse response, in time domain at the sampling point, is calculated after the DFE equalizer. The pulse is calculated with the optimal equalizer settings. The pulse value at the sampling point is set as As in the COM calculation. All valid equalizations settings for the FFE and CTLE are simulated in the search of the maximum As. Noise probability density function (pdf) are calculated for each disturbance source. Noise as inter symbol interference (ISI), voltage noise, crosstalk, jitter etc. is considered in the calculation of the combined total noise pdf. The noise level, Ani, at the sampling point, for the specified DER0 is calculated from the total noise pdf. With estimated As and Ani can the COM value be calculated as given in equation (1) and checked toward the required margin.

IX. Conclusions In the design of high speed serial channels, with a flexible use of varying transceivers, both existing and future coming, it is important to secure that all combinations of used circuits will work. Traditional compliance check methods as, for example, plots of characteristics and limit lines, gives in many cases an overdesign with increase of cost or functional limitations as results. The overdesign tends to increase with transmission data speed. Compliance check with COM reduces the overdesign as it allows the ‘give and take’ approach between different channel characteristics. This reduction of overdesign makes the COM method attractive and starts to be spread to other standards than Ethernet. Especially to links with high speed. Examples of links using COM are CAUI-4-C2C (also specified in IEEE 802.3) and the new coming JEDEC JESD 204C.

Produktnytt Three terminal capacitors meet high speed processor needs in automobile safety systems MURATA HAS INTRODUCED the NFM18HC series of three terminal ceramic multilayer capacitors for use in high reliability automobile applications where the main application areas are in preventive safety systems and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

The use of a three terminal capacitor as opposed to a conventional two terminal one addresses specific needs associated with the application.

The power circuit of a processor requires many decoupling capacitors to reduce that impedance, thereby suppressing fluctuation of the power voltage, and increasing stability. As the processing speed (operating frequency) of the processor increases, the control of impedance across a wide frequency band is very important and one problem is that you need dozens/hundreds of decoupling capacitors which occupy a lot of space.

The three terminal multilayer ceramic capacitor has a smaller equivalent series inductance (ESL) than conventional two terminal multilayer ceramic capacitors, thus reducing the overall impedance. This lowers the number of capacitors that need to be used for higher frequency bands which frees up valuable board space for other components, making it possible to reduce the PCB area required.

Making use of this characteristic has resulted in its wide adoption for smartphones and other devices where compactness and high density are needed for mounted high-speed processors. The use of three terminal multilayer ceramic capacitors in the automotive market has surged recently due to the demand for high performance processors and smaller electronics. This demand has driven the increase in high-functioning

multitasking onboard equipment such as ADAS, preventive safety systems, and in-vehicle infotainment (IVI).

Murata’s NFM18HC series capacitors provide a three terminal multilayer ceramic capacitor in the company’s smallest 1.6 x 0.8 mm package (previous product was 2.0 x 1.2 mm). Furthermore, it confirms to the AEC-Q200 standard for use in high quality and high reliability automobile applications, making an important contribution to further size reduction and tighter density for automotive electronics.
