LEADING CLASS INTO THE FUTURE

chairman’s welcome

A positive outlook for the industry Edwin Lampert Chairman, Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference, Exhibition & Awards Head of Content Riviera Maritime Media

I

t gives me great please to welcome you to the offshore support vessel industry’s premier annual gathering otherwise known as Riviera’s Offshore Support Journal Week. The name stems from the week ahead seeing three world class conferences, a magnificent gala dinner and awards, an industry leading exhibition and the many networking opportunities available over the next three days. European Dynamic Positioning Conference (EDPC) The 2018 EDPC is an intensive one day event, preceding our Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference. The programme covers essential operational, technical, regulatory, and commercial topics that underpin successful DP operations. In line with the zeitgeist, a highlight of this year’s programme will be a look at ‘DP, data, digital and dollars – adding value and reducing cost’. At Wednesday’s Annual OSJ Dinner we will present the Dynamic Positioning award. This accolade will go to the developer of an innovative DP product or system, or contractor responsible for an especially innovative application of DP on a project. The Offshore Wind Journal Conference (OWJC) Our Offshore Wind Journal Conference takes as its overarching theme ‘exploring growth opportunities and the role of technology and innovation’. A full agenda has been drawn up that will see attendees briefed on the market; regional developments; vessel design and build as well as equipment and technology. Tomorrow’s Annual OSJ Dinner will see a leading light from the sector presented with the Offshore Renewables Award. The award recognises a company, project or product that has made a significant contribution to the development of the market during the last 12 months.

The Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference, Awards & Exhibition The world’s largest international conference for the offshore support industry returns with a topical programme, large exhibition and the crowning glory of the Offshore Shipping Journal Awards and Gala Dinner. With the oil price apparently stable and signs of companies making profit again our programme will bring vital clarity to the evolving supply chain, and new and renewed opportunities and markets. Our Awards Dinner – recognised throughout industry as both a highpoint of the calendar and the most convivial – will see excellence recognised across the following categories: • Safety Award • Support Vessel of the Year • Shipowner of the Year • Innovation of the Year • Environmental Award • Offshore Renewables Award • Subsea Innovation Award • Dynamic Positioning Award • Lifetime Achievement Award • OSJ Industry Leader Award Nominations were canvassed for each category, except the Lifetime Achievement and Industry Leader Award. The nominations were then reduced to a shortlist per category. The shortlisted companies were then put forward for an online vote. And again the industry has voted in record numbers. Essential support Of course, our three events could not take place without the generous support of all our sponsors. We are also grateful for the enthusiastic support of our official supporting organisations. Please also be sure to visit the leading-edge companies that form our supporting exhibitions. Last but by no means least, we are especially grateful to you, our international audience, for coming again in such numbers, and from all over the world, for a twelfth consecutive year.

Offshore Support Journal Conference, Awards & Exhibition platinum sponsor welcome

OSJ industry on the brink of transformation Bart Long Offshore Segment Manager Caterpillar Marine

O

n behalf of Caterpillar, I am pleased to welcome you to the 2018 OSJ Conference in London. In terms of bringing all of the stakeholders in the OSV industry together to share knowledge and discuss how we can turn challenges into opportunities, this is the place to be. With a market outlook that is a mixture between great potential and slowdown, we need all the insights we can get to make the right decisions and capture the great market that is out there. But it will take fresh ideas, wave-breaking solutions and improved technology. Our industry is on the brink of transformation. We can already see how borders open, communication increases and business practices change and help propel global growth. But that is not all. We’re venturing into deeper and more remote waters, putting new demands on equipment and crew, and facing stricter regulations too. The demand for solutions that

can increase output without sacrificing the environment is higher than ever. It’s a natural part of everyone’s agenda. Are complete solutions the way to go? We think so. All the best equipment from torque to thrust, and expertise to monitor the vessel’s total performance will help increase efficiency, reduce downtime and assist shipyards in reducing warranty expenses. Our offer gives you all of that in one place so that you can focus on other, equally important matters, such as recruiting and retaining the best people. Thanks to Caterpillar’s 90 years of innovation and experience of focusing on the customer, you can feel safe knowing that you have the right equipment and the right information. It allows you to spend less time worrying and more time doing what you do best. Here’s wishing you a great conference and, as always, we welcome the chance to talk with you. So come over and say hello.

Offshore Wind Journal Conference platinum sponsor profile

2017: a turning point for offshore wind Yannis Calogeras Chief Executive for UK & Ireland Bureau Veritas

O

n behalf of Bureau Veritas I am delighted to welcome you to the Offshore Wind Journal Conference, a one-day event kicking off the highly regarded annual OSJ Conference and Awards organised by the capable and enthusiastic Riviera Maritime Media team. Given the current state of affairs in the offshore oil and gas market, it is easy to see why the offshore wind sector is regarded as the bright spot. And although it should be acknowledged that the size of the sector is currently much smaller than big brother oil and gas, there are good reasons to be optimistic about its development going forward. 2017 has been a turning point for the offshore wind industry with the levelised cost of energy falling steeply which makes offshore wind energy competitive to fight against fossil fuels. As a consequence the number of offshore wind turbines continues to grow steadily. In addition, innovation on turbine technology is developing fast and the electric power-generating capacity of the turbines is rapidly growing. We have effectively entered the era of 8+ MW turbines, representing an even stronger growth in terms of global production capacity. It is interesting to note that, although Europe will remain the centre of gravity, other countries including China, Taiwan and the USA are also increasing investment in large-scale offshore windfarms. In fact, the situation in the UK has become rather uncertain following the EU referendum and it remains to be seen how Brexit will impact the UK wind industry, which is the global leader, but at the same time strongly linked to mainland Europe. As offshore wind parks are being developed further offshore in deeper waters and harsher environments, utilising ever-larger turbines, windfarm service vessels are becoming increasingly capable and versatile with good seakeeping characteristics. Key focus points are higher crane capacity, installation support vessels and service operation vessels accommodating larger numbers of personnel, crew transfer vessels carrying more than 12 technicians and motion

compensated walk-to-work offshore access systems enabling step-free access from the onboard warehouses to the transition piece platform. Bureau Veritas is a proud supporter of the fast-growing and highly innovative marine renewables industry. We are COFRAC accredited for offshore wind project certification, type and component certified according to the IEC 61400 series and also recognised by the German BSH for project certification. We have developed dedicated class notations and rules for windfarm service ships and special equipment such as offshore access systems. Bureau Veritas is also providing statutory certification as a recognised organisation on behalf of flag states. In that role we are working closely together with administrations and industry associations to support the development of an internationally harmonised regulatory framework for offshore wind vessels with a view to enhance safety and create a level playing field for the industry. Furthermore, subsidiaries of the Bureau Veritas Group, including TMC, Tecnitas, MAC and MatthewsDaniel are offering a wide range of advisory and consultancy services, including marine warranty, risk and safety studies, assurance, life-cycle assessment and engineering studies. R&D is key to support the development of the marine renewable energy industry going forward. Bureau Veritas is investing heavily in new technologies including floating wind turbines, current and tidal turbines, ocean thermal energy conversion and wave energy conversion. In addition to supporting the development of demonstrators, we are also involved in the development of safety standards. On behalf of Bureau Veritas I wish you a fruitful conference yielding valuable insights and ample opportunity to meet and exchange views. I am looking forward to talking to you over the course of the next three days of this always exciting and well-organised Riviera event. Thank you!

Founded in 1862, ABS sets the standards for safety and excellence as one of the world’s leading classification societies. The ABS mission is to serve the public interest as well as the needs of its members and clients by promoting the security of life and property and preserving the natural environment. ABS classed the first workboats to venture into the Gulf of Mexico in the early days of offshore exploration in the US. Today, ABS classes roughly one-third of all offshore support vessels (OSVs) worldwide, including the world’s largest pipelaying vessel, one of the world’s largest offshore construction vessels and North America’s first LNG fuelled OSV fleet. The broad scope of offshore support operations has led to more specialiced services that are changing the roles and capabilities of this critical fleet, which is carrying out operations associated with construction, emergency response, well services and subsea support, and alternative energy in addition to the traditional support roles. ABS monitors global fleet activity and works in advance of industry to anticipate changing needs and developments in offshore vessel design, equipment and systems. As the leading provider of classification services to the global offshore industry, we are in a unique position to support the sector. Experienced ABS professionals can guide OSV projects during the initial design concept, through the plan approval process, during construction and throughout the entire service life of the asset. As classification continues to evolve, ABS assists owners and operators with tackling the most pressing technical, operational and regulatory challenges so the marine and offshore industries can operate with greater levels of safety, security and responsibility.

Walk-to-work solutions Uptime International is the world leader in developing safe motion compensated access solutions; our company mission is to increase uptime through safe access. Uptime International develops, markets and installs, for sale and rental, motion compensated access solutions for the oil and gas and the offshore wind industry around the globe. Our 23.4 m gangway has been in use in the wind industry as well as oil and gas since 2013 and is now the benchmark for motion compensated gangways for monohull flotels and workboats. Uptime has delivered and have on order 29 units of our 23.4 m active motion compensated gangways. We have a range of proven gangways from 6 to 57 m. We have delivered more than 130 walk-to-work gangways since 1979. All Uptime gangways can be pushed against a platform for short-time connections, or landed on a landing platform for long-term connections – all the time continuously open for transfer in both directions. Our gangways are also available with an adjustable height pedestal, making it possible to reach almost any height landing. With a range of Uptime logistic solutions it is possible to take cargo from the vessel warehouse, up through an integrated elevator and through our UPTIME gangway directly to the transition piece or oil installation with an electric trolley. This solution can be standalone or an add-on to existing solutions. Autonomous Uptime gangways are long-term tested and ready for delivery: push the autolanding button and the gangway will connect itself. Existing passive gangways can be upgraded to fully active motion compensated gangways.

Van Aalst Group specialises in motion compensated gangway bridges and cargo handling to transport and distribute dry bulk and liquids to the marine, offshore and construction industry worldwide. With the core design principles being reliable, durable, efficient and safe, the companies continually deliver top quality products that adhere to customer-specific and environmental demands. Close collaboration and decades of field knowledge has led to great technological advances as a result of the customer-driven approach and dedication. Van Aalst Group works to deliver environmentally friendly solutions for now and in the future. The CargoMaxx multi-purpose cargo system is capable of carrying both dry bulk and liquid cargo. With CargoMaxx, offshore supply vessels can take dry materials to a platform and use the same tanks on the return trip to carry drill cuttings, return mud and other process waste. Safeway designs and fabricates motion compensated gangway bridges and with its Seagull-type sets a new standard for motion compensated systems. With year-round workability at 25+ m above sea level, Safeway redefines offshore access solutions. Handled as a single lift and with its plug and play configuration, the Safeway can be utilised on different vessels with minimal installation or modifications to the vessel structure. It has a higher workability allowing transfers in larger weather windows, increased safety and thus an improved overall efficiency in executing walk-towork operations. As part of the Van Aalst group, Safeway supplements the broad range of innovations developed and brought to the market by the group in strong partnerships with major suppliers. With multiple offices abroad, clients are supported by a dedicated operational support team.

Gold sponsor Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference, Exhibition & Awards

Silver sponsor Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference, Exhibition & Awards

Vanuatu Maritime Services Limited (VMSL) welcomes delegates to the OSJ Conference in London and it is again our pleasure to co-sponsor this high profile event. Vanuatu is an independent nation comprising a chain of islands in the southwest Pacific, about 2,000 km northeast of Australia. Vanuatu has been an independent nation since 1980, being a member of the United Nations and the Commonwealth. The Vanuatu Flag offers both an ethical and economical shipping register, affording significant savings in overall operating costs. Vanuatu Maritime Services Limited (VMSL) is the company responsible for operating the Vanuatu Flag Administration, which is an open shipping register with no restrictions on shipowner’s domicile or crew nationality. The registry recognises most national qualifications for seafarers serving on board Vanuatu Flag Vessels. VMSL is responsible for compliance with international shipping legislation and with the safety and welfare of its seafarers. As a member of the International Maritime Organization, with a permanent representative at the IMO here in London, the Vanuatu Shipping Register is committed to maintaining high standards of safety within its fleet, and has adopted all relevant IMO Conventions. With a fleet size of some 700 vessels, a significant percentage being in the offshore sector, the Vanuatu Shipping Register is able to offer a more personalised service to its flagged vessel managers and work with them towards good onboard safety cultures. The administration (headquartered in Port Vila) is represented worldwide by a network of deputy commissioners and special agents, based in all of the major ports and shipping centres, along with a vast network of approved safety inspectors and aurveyors, who stand ready to assist our flagged vessels. Extremely attractive registration, and annual costs are available and our representatives will be happy to discuss these.

Fire and evacuation procedure In the event of a fire, the evacuation siren – which is a continuous trilling sound – will be activated immediately. You should proceed to the nearest fire exit and go to the Novotel London West “Green Area Assembly Point” which is located on Talgarth Road. If you exit the building on the 1st Floor Podium Deck, you will meet a staff member clearly identified in a high visibility jacket. Follow his/her directions down the temporary staircase on to Butterwick Road. Please note this is no longer an accessible emergency exit, guests with mobility difficulties must exit via the ground floor. Other members of staff, similarly dressed, will be available to direct you along Shortlands until you reach a point where you will see green directional signage clearly marked “Green Area Assembly Point.” Please follow these signs to the Hotel Assembly Point. If you exit the hotel by the Ground Floor, you will again see staff dressed as above. Follow their directions and the green signage as described above and proceed to the Hotel Assembly Point. Please do not stop to collect personal belongings or attempt to use the lifts, using only the dedicated fire exits.
