'Incredible honour' for local comedian Local Aboriginal comedian Dane Simpson has described being chosen as Wagga Wagga’s Australia Day Ambassador as an incredible honour.

Mr Simpson’s announcement as the city’s ambassador comes as preparations ramp up for the Australia Day long weekend of events and activities in Wagga Wagga.

The fun begins from Thursday 24 January with free entry at the Oasis Aquatic Centre for a screening of The Greatest Showman, followed by the Australia Day Awards at the Civic Theatre on Friday 25 January.

On Australia Day, there will be a free community breakfast in the Victory Memorial Gardens along with Aussie activities and entertainment, as well as a special citizenship ceremony in the Civic Centre Arcade.

“It is an incredible honour to be the city’s Australia Day Ambassador. I think it is absolutely amazing to be representing my community,” Mr Simpson said.

“I am most looking forward to giving a speech at the community awards and meeting all the new Australians receiving their citizenship.

“I just would like to say a massive thank you to my partner Eleanor, my family, my friends and the Wagga Wagga community for all the support.”

The comedian has had a huge 2018, including a sell-out run at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the televised gala,

appearing on Have You Been Paying Attention? and rounding it out with shows at the Falls Festival.

In 2019 he will be appearing at the Perth and Adelaide Fringe Festivals and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival again, along with the Wagga Comedy Fest and continue to focus on growing the Riverina Comedy Club.

Nominations for the Australia Day Awards were announced this week, with community members to be recognised across three categories - Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year (27 and younger) and the Walk of Honour Award. The awards ceremony will also feature a free concert form the Australian Army Band Kapooka and the national anthem competition finalists.

About Dane Simpson

Dane Simpson is one of Australia’s rising stars in comedy. He has toured around Australia doing various comedy shows. He has appeared on ABC’s Comedy UpLate. In 2018, he starred in the hit standup comedy show Aborigi-LOL which sold out its entire season at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Dane also appeared at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala. At the end of 2018 he toured Western Australia with his variety show “Great Danes”.

Dane Simpson performed at the Commonwealth Games Festival and you might have seen him on Have You Been Paying Attention?. In 2019 Dane will be back with his hit show Aborigi-LOL at both the Perth FringeWorld and Adelaide Fringe festivals, he will also be performing his first solo show ‘Origins’ at the 2019 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

LOCAL HEROES NOMINATED FOR WAGGA WAGGA AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS

Some of the community’s most generous and selfless residents have been recognised with nominations for the 2019 Wagga Wagga Australia Day Awards.

The awards ceremony will be held at the Civic Theatre from 7pm on Friday 25 January.

There are three nominees for Citizen of the Year, three nominees for Young Citizen of the Year and seven for the prestigious Walk of Honour Award.

“It’s fantastic to see so many outstanding members of our community recognised through the award nomination process,” Wagga Wagga City Council Acting General Manager Janice Summerhayes said.

“The Australia Day Awards honour the hard work and dedication of people in our community who make the city a better place.

“The award nominees represent some of Wagga Wagga’s many unsung heroes, from tireless community advocates to long-serving volunteers, and I would like to congratulate them on behalf of our city.”

There were no nominations for the Ted Ryder Memorial Award that met the selection criteria.

All community members are invited to attend the awards, which will feature a speech by Wagga Wagga’s Australia Day Ambassador Dane Simpson.

A W A R D N O M I N E E S F O R 2 0 19 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

For outstanding service to the community

ALAN LEAN: Alan is a long standing member and past President of the Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga. As a Rotary member Alan has served in countless local service projects over the past 30 years and has served as a volunteer and board member of community radio station 2AAA FM. Alan and his wife Kaye were the driving force behind establishing the regional Camp Quality Centre and founding of Country Hope. More recently Alan was founder of the Wagga Wagga Rotary Shine Awards, which recognise employees with disabilities and the employers who offer them meaningful employment.

DAVID MUNDY: David helps to enrich the cultural lives of Wagga Wagga residents by creating high quality musical performances that bring people together. David is the founder and President of the Wagga Wagga Community Band.

He is also a life member of the Wagga Wagga City Rugby Club, President of the Wagga Wagga City Rugby Choir and Secretary of ukulele group Strum.

Leadership Group to further support children and young adults whose lives have been changed due to cancer. A keen sportsman, Isaac has been involved in refereeing touch football, national rugby league and also coaches an under 12 touch football team, both within and out of school hours.

DR MATTHEW LENNON (25 years): Despite his youth, Matthew is an outstanding leader in rural health and high school education.

Matthew has founded Doctors for Rural Education and Medicine (DREAM), to mentor and inspire medical students to train and remain doctors in the bush. Since 2013 he had run Springboard Education (a charity offering free tutoring to rural children), inspiring hundreds of local students to excel in education and follow carers in healthcare. Matthew is renowned for running rural appreciation weekends for visiting students and doctors interested in pursuing a rural health career. Matthew is also very active in community organisations, volunteering at the Palliative Care Unit and assisting struggling students.

MIA BOWCHER (15 years): Mia is a role model for younger generations.

Mia voluntary co-produces and0 presents a weekly radio show at Life MICHAEL GEORGIOU: Arriving FM, doing so since she was 11 years in Wagga Wagga from Cyprus in old. ISAAC CORNELL (16 years): Since the age of 11, Isaac has been raising funds and awareness of cancer related issues. He has organised fundraising days at his primary school, shaved his hair in high school and continually raised funds for CanTeen to help children touched by cancer. Isaac has also become a member of the CanTeen

WALK OF HONOUR AWARD

For substantial contributors (past or present) to the Wagga Wagga LGA. Nominees can be of any age, living or deceased and must have resided in Wagga Wagga Local Government Area for a period of at least five years.

TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF MUSEUM’S BOTANIC GARDENS SITE

Free casual entry at Oasis when the mercury hits 41

Soaring temperatures and heatwave conditions in the city this week have paved the way for Wagga Wagga City Council to offer free casual entry at the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre.

Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Greg Conkey OAM (pictured) said the Oasis will have free casual entry when the temperature reaches 41 degrees and above, according to the Bureau of

Meteorology official website.

“We recognise the extreme heatwave conditions and the effect it’s having on the community,” Cr Conkey said.

“This is one way community members can escape the heat and find some welcomed relief.”

Oasis Manager Maurice Eames confirmed the arrangement only applies to

general admission and is not applicable to programs or memberships.

He said “free casual entry” will apply for the remainder of a day once the temperature hits 41C degrees on that day, according to the Bureau.

This arrangement will be in place until 29 January 2019 when Councillors will discuss the matter at its next Council meeting.

LAKE ALBERT, PLUMPTON ROAD WORKS TO START

Modification works will kick off this week at the intersection of Lake Albert and Plumpton roads.

The works aim to improve traffic flow by extending the existing median strip further

into Plumpton Road.

Traffic along Lake Albert Road will be reduced to one lane at the location of the works and traffic controls will be in place.

The Museum of the Riverina’s Botanic Gardens site will close temporarily from 29 January.

Museum Manager Luke Grealy said the 18-month temporary closure is the next step in the $3.18M redevelopment project now underway at the Botanic Gardens site.

“Architects started work on the detailed design before Christmas and we expect that will be completed in May 2019,” he said.

“With the museum closed many objects will be carefully and safely relocated and stored, in readiness for their return to new, state of the art storage and displays.

“The redevelopment aims to make major improvements to the museum’s exhibition spaces, collection storage and staff areas.

“These will help Museum of the Riverina to conserve the objects in

our care, and tell our city and the region’s story in new ways to wider audiences.

“One exciting development is the landscaping of the outdoor display area and the construction of specialist outdoor displays - with improved accessibility - to make it easier for everyone to enjoy the museum’s collection of agricultural machinery,” he said.

Visitors are reminded that the Museum’s Historic Council Chambers site on the corner of Baylis and Morrow Streets will remain open.

Council resolved at its June 2018 meeting to accept a NSW Government funding offer of $3.18M to deliver the redevelopment.

Start the new year with a tidy up by taking advantage of Wagga Wagga City Council’s hard waste collection.

Households that pay the domestic waste management service charge are eligible for one free hard waste collection each calendar year.

“The hard waste service is a great way to start 2019 with a clean and tidy house,” Council’s Waste Education and Communications Officer Alice Kent said.

“With the hard waste service, the truck comes to you on a pre-booked day and will take away up to two cubic metres of rubbish.

“Some items aren’t able to be disposed of through the hard waste service, such as hazardous materials. If you have any questions or want to check, please visit the yourwaste.com. au/hardwaste website or give Council a call.”

Miss Kent said that while the new service makes it easier for residents to dispose of larger items, Council encourages the community to follow the Avoid, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Landfill hierarchy.

“Before you dispose of your unwanted items, take a minute to think about whether they can be reused or recycled,” she said.

“Landfill should always

be the last option and there are a wide range of items that you can take to Gregadoo Waste Management Centre (GWMC) for free.

“Polystyrene, cardboard, automotive batteries, up to 100l of paint, up to 20l of motor oil, televisions and computers are accepted free of charge at GWMC every day.

“You can also drop off unwanted items that are still in good condition for free to the GWMC Tip Shop, which is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.”

NEW FOOT BRIDGES IMPROVE ACCESSIBILITY ALONG WIRADJURI WALKING TRACK

Two new pedestrian bridges on Wagga Wagga’s popular Wiradjuri Walking Track have improved accessibility for community members and visitors who use the area along the Murrumbidgee River.

Wagga Wagga City Council worked closely with the NSW Department of Industry Crown Lands who provided the $42,000 and who also built the bridges with the aim of improving sections of the 42-kilometre track.

Minister for Lands and Forestry Paul Toole was in Wagga recently and met with Council’s Acting General

Ms Summerhayes also acknowledged the progress that has been made to the development of a new ground at Conolly Rugby Park.

Council worked closely with Southern Inland Rugby Union to secure a $295,000 state grant which will go towards a new fourth ground at the councilowned complex. The funding is through the Clubgrants Infrastructure Grants program.

Ms Summerhayes said Council had already invested $228,000 in preparation and other works for the construction of the fourth rugby field.

The current Food Truck Trial across the city is being well received by residents and visitors alike. “This project has been a partnership approach with Crown Lands which enhances the overall experience of the Wiradjuri Walking Track and adds to the greater area which includes the Marrambidya Wetland,” Ms Summerhayes said.

“The track is extremely popular with the local community and is a well-known destination for visitors to the city.”

Like other food based businesses, they also provide casual employment to young people over the summer break. for the RiFL Hub and increasing investment in the city through business and industry.

As a city we need to look at both the little and big economic picture to ensure we’re both sustainable and thriving, it’s a tough balance but it’s achievable. The Food Truck Trial is a small but important part of this and, by all reports, is kicking goals in boosting small business and employing local people so it looks like we’re off to a flying start for 2019.
