We are having an outstanding 2014-2015 school year! Many things have changed, and the staff and students have adjusted very well. The various advertisements and television spots have really put Rolling Hill in the spotlight. The RRISD Curriculum and our Balanced Literacy programs have provided for a greater alignment between the grade levels. Our goal is to make student transitions from one year to the next go as smoothly as possible with minimal interruption in learning. From the GT program, Math and Reading Interventions, and other acedemic programs to an increase in technology resources, our Wildcats are receiving a broad spectrum of learning opporntunities to best meet their needs and prepare them for the next level. The cafeteria is doing an awesome job of providing delicious meals for our students, while meeting the federal nutrition guidelines. The PTO is really stepping up our parental involvement program with activities and events not only for pleasure and fun but also for advanced learning opportunties. Our open houses, math and ELA family nights, and various programs have brought a lot of the community on to our campus. Our communty’s involvement and “do whatever it takes” attitude has contributed to our commitment to excellence. Thank you for all the support and help in everything we do!

I know many feel that spring and summer are times May 7th: for children to “take a break from learning,” but I enElementary Track Meet courage the opposite. The brain needs a constant workout to get better and better. Like the person River Road High School who faithfully goes to the gym to get in better shape, the learner must continue reading and learning to Stadium keep the brain in shape. Parents who encourage their children to read by modeling reading and taking them to the library will see a tremendous improvement in overall learning. Even on vacation, parents can make an occasional stop at a museum or historical site to keep the mind learning. Spring and summer should not be a time to stop learning, but a time to switch gears for a while and continue learning in a different way! On Friday, February 13th Phillips 66 generously donated $25,000! The funds will go to improve technology by providing new Smart Boards for the classrooms and also help the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program. Principal Rolling Hills Elementary Principal Richard Kelley said, “Give kids the extra resources they need to be more successful in the classrooms, and give teachers the extra resources to get the kids using various types of technology, so that when they get into middle school or high school it’s just like using their cell phone.”

Richard Kelley

NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT!

School Board Elections will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2015

The passage of House Bill 645 and Senate Bill 324 will remove language in the school funding formula that reduces the amount of money a school district that has a geographic area of less than 300 square miles and an average daily attendance of fewer than 1,600 students currently receives. River Road ISD is one of these districts. If this language would have not been in effect, RRISD would have received an additional $669,514 for the 2014-2015 school year. Rather than continually being forced to cut programs and do without needed equipment and supplies in order to save money, now is the time to let our elected representatives in Austin know that this funding inequity must be corrected. Please take the time to contact our State Senator, Kel Seliger and/or our State Representative, Four Price by phone, letter, fax, or e-mail to let them know you support this legislation because the students and staff of River Road ISD should no longer be punished this way.
