Irrigator attendance urged By BRAD PERRY RIVERLAND irrigators are being urged to attend a meeting in Barmera today, where representatives from irrigator group Murray Valley United will discuss the group’s legal case over the federal and state government’s water reforms. Concerned irrigator and organiser Joe Gropler said this could be the last chance for local growers to fight. “This meeting could determine the long term future of the Riverland, he said. “This will give us hope to stay on and fight. Murray Valley United’s legal and research teams will discuss the Federal Court challenge into the legality of the government’s water reforms at the meeting and Mr Gropler said people can become members of the group for a small $500 fee. “You have got everything to lose if you stay home and don’t come to the meeting, he said. “I would rather be in the fight and lose, than not be in the fight at all. Mr Gropler is confident Murray Valley United can gain compensation and hopes Riverlanders can be a part of it. “What it says in the constitution is we have water rights but what the government has said is we have a share in the resource and those are two different things, he said. “The states and feds have been acting illegally because they are in breach of the constitution. The meeting will take place at the Barmera-Monash Football Club from 11am.

Students to learn of Australian soldiers’ sacrifices...

When veterans meet the young ones By BRAD PERRY RIVERLAND PRIMARY school students are set to learn about the sacrifices made by Australian soldiers fighting for their country during war, when ‘Veterans Meet the Young Ones’ tomorrow. The program, organised by the Riverland Veterans Centre as part of the Every Generation Festival, will incorporate a memorabilia display from the Daw Park Repatriation General Hospital, as well as an array of guest speakers. Riverland Veterans Centre treasurer Pauline Gilbert said year six and seven students from Our Lady of the River Primary School are amongst those invited to the event at the Berri RSL club to learn about Australia’s wars and conflicts. “We are inviting veterans, ex service and serving personnel, war widows, peace keepers and national servicemen, she said. Pauline’s husband John, a war veteran, who was involved in the Malayan Emergency in 1958-59, believes it is important for children to learn about the wars and conflicts Australia has been involved in. “It is important for the children to understand about what did happen in those times, he said. “To understand that life

podiatrist Jonathan Ellis talking about healthy feet and Riverland Community Legal Service solicitor Neil Smith addressing those present about power of attorneys and wills.
