South Australian Regional Development Minister Gail Gago said the relocation of the company’s Chinese facility will be a major boost for not just the Riverland but the state as a whole. “It’s a wonderful project and a real coup having Syntec relocate from China to Berri using that old site,” she said. “They are anticipating to create 25 new jobs and it

Ready for festive rush LOCAL traders are remaining upbeat coming into the final days before Christmas with last minute shoppers expected to flock to the stores across the region. Renmark Paringa Traders president Dave Patty said business has been steady so far but he is hopeful the situation will improve leading into Christmas. “There has been no real big burst or anything happening, although I guess things will increase with school holidays starting,” he said. Mr Patty said he was expecting plenty of last minute shoppers. “As usual, some people are organised very early and then there is a lot of last minute stuff,” he said.

Business Riverland president Barry Phillips said traders are preparing for a rush in the lead up to Christmas. “We would like to think that the Riverland is progressing through the Christmas period here in a very positive manner, certainly with the christmas activities and the parades in each town,” Mr Phillips said. Encouraging residents to buy at least one gift from the Riverland this Christmas, Mr Phillips said the festive trade is important for many businesses. The region is also set to benefit from the holiday season with caravan parks, hotels and motels taking many bookings. Loxton Chamber of Commerce business and events manager Sonya Altschwager said

traders in the area were already feeling a boost as Christmas approaches. “We have reached over $20,000 in sales for our gift voucher and that can only be spent back in our local member stores, so that is something that is really focused on shopping local,” Ms Altschwager said. The Loxton area will extend shopping hours in a bid to give the local economy a further cash injection. “We have extended our shopping hours each Saturday until Christmas until 3pm and we are also having a twilight trade until 7pm on Friday, December 21.” Businesses in the Riverland West area are also preparing for a last minute shopping rush.

Reminder to stay safe on the roads during holidays THE State Government is reminding motorists to be cautious on the roads over Christmas. Following the launch of Operation Safe Holdays - No Excuses, Road Safety Minister Jennifer Rankine said the Christmas-New Year period is a time of celebration and relaxation but all too often it is marred by death or serious injury on the road. “At this time of year there is increased road traffic, there are loaded vehicles, caravans, trailers, tourists on unfamiliar roads and drivers can be drowsy,” Ms Rankine said.

“Drivers can also be distracted by mobile phones, sound systems, on-board DVD players andsatellite navigation.

Give driving 100 per cent of your concentration.

“It can be a deadly cocktail and we need to work together to ensure we all use and share

theroads responsibly. “Give driving 100 per cent of your concentration. “There are no excuses.” To date, 86 people have lost their lives on the state’s roads, compared to 98 at the same time last year. “While this is significantly lower than previous years, this is 86 mums, dads, grandparents, children and best friends whose seats will be empty at the Christmas table,” Ms Rankine said. Last year, 11 people were killed over the official Christmas holiday period and 91 people

were seriously injured. In the past five years, 63 people have been killed during this time and there have been 641 serious injuries sustained. “It is not just family and friends that are forever affected by road trauma,” Ms Rankine said. “MFS fire fighters across the state responded to 345 road traffic crashes last Christmas school holidays. “Over the same period, CFS volunteers responded to 182 crashes and the SES attended 67 crash scenes.”

International DJ set to show his love for the Riverland THE Riverland is set to host one of the world’s most popular DJs this Saturday as a local night club promises to continue bringing top name acts to the region. Well known for international hit dance song ‘Show Me Love’, Mobin Master will play at the Rivaz Nightclub in Renmark on Saturday, supported by a host of local mix masters. Organiser Andrew ‘Sarez’ Sarakinis said bringing the international DJ to the region has been years in the making. “We’ve been doing really well at Rivaz and leading up to Christmas we wanted to get a big name down to the

Mr Sarakinis said he hopes more and more big acts will come to the region in the new year. “We are sort of a bit deprived being outside of the city and with all of our shows in the past, with Rivaz we try and give people something to go to instead of travelling all the way to Adelaide and Melbourne, we are trying to get all these big acts to the Riverland,” he said. Eleanor’s top marks LOXTON High School’s Eleanor Garrard topped the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) across the Riverland after results were released to students yesterday. With an ATAR of 98.75, the 18-year-old produced the highest mark across the region with Glossop High School’s Edmond Grosser (97), Waikerie’s Rachel Perry (96.03) and Renmark’s Shaun Crouch (93.6) topping their respective schools. Upon receiving a phone call from Loxton High School principal Steven Marshall, Miss Garrard said she was “kind of dazed and shocked” to receive the good news. “When I realised what I had achieved it was just overwhelming joy because I was not expecting to achieve that highly,” she said. “What this has done for me

is it has really secured my future and it’s allowed me to relax over the holidays because I’m confident going into next year. “To be one of those people and to join, I guess you could call it an honour roll of the people who have topped the Riverland, it is just a huge honour and I am so excited to be a part of that.” Miss Garrard’s high ATAR rank will now enable her to study her dream degree. “I was aiming for an honours psychology course at the University of Adelaide which has an ATAR of 99.95 in order to get in and that’s obviously very tough because it’s the top score,” she said. “I was thinking that even with bonus points from the country I might not be able to get that. “I went to check the results on the computer and found out it was 98.75 and that was

just huge.” The talented triathlete and volleyballer, who competed at the Australian Schools Volleyball Cup last week, thanked all of the teachers who helped her achieve her ATAR. Overall Loxton High School had 29 students receive an ATAR of above 80 and 14 of those had a score over 90. Waikerie High School’s Rachel Perry was surprised to find out she had received a score of 96.03. “I didn’t expect something quite that high,” she said. “It just felt really good that my hard work paid off.” She has applied to study nursing at the Flinders University Rural Clinical School in Renmark. While currently on holiday in Bali, Glossop High School’s Edmond Grosser topped ATAR

scores with 97 with principal Bevin Brooks describing him as an “all-rounder”. “Edmond is a fantastic allrounder, he won the A grade trophy for soccer, he’s been in the state squads for cycling, he’s a nice lad and he works hard and if you get an ATAR of 97, you’re also pretty clever too,” he said. Mr Brooks said a high number of students also included TAFE studies in year 12 this year. “What’s interesting about this year is the increasing number of students who have a large VET component in their SACE and we have 80 students who did some TAFE subjects,” he said. “Even the kids who are heading to university are taking the option of doing some VET components.” At Renmark High School dux went to Shaun Crouch with an ATAR of 93.6.

Riverland’s upstanding citizens awarded CITIZENS of the year across the Riverland have been announced with the worthy recipients dedicating a lot of time in the community in 2012. Dick Fogden became Loxton’s 2013 citizen of the year last Thursday following his endless dedication to charities and the township. “Loxton is a great place and I’d do anything for Loxton, I’d do anything for anybody really,” Mr Fogden said. He also said it was a “great thrill and a great honour” to be recognised for his community work that his wife Deidre is also involved in. “Deidre and I have done a lot of voluntary work that is good for the community and you meet a lot of people and that’s what I like,” he said. Mr Fogden has farmed all his life in the Nangari district and has been heavily involved in promoting Santa Gertrudis cattle and

represented the pork industry with United Farmers and Stock Owners Association. One of Dick’s greatest achievements is the fundraising dinners that Deidre and Dick have organised for charities such as the Crippled Children’s Association, Loxton Hospital and Royal Flying Doctors service to name a few. While Mr Fogden is looking forward to the official award presentation on Australia Day, he said there will be no time to rest. “We always help and the barbeques and that so I’ll be there doing that, I suppose I’ll have a couple of minutes off when Leon presents the award,” he said. Sid Copeland was named Waikerie’s Citizen of the Year after years of being actively involved in community fundraising for the Waikerie Hospital, local football and bowling clubs, rotary and probus clubs and delivering Meals on Wheels for the

Regional Development Minster insists...

MP calls for fund reinstatement MEMBER for Chaffey Tim Whetstone has called on the State Government to reopen another round of the Riverland Sustainable Futures Fund under its original guidelines. The State Government this week announced that the remaining $6.2 million in the fund would be held over to “build even stronger partnerships between the State and Federal Governments for even greater benefits to the Murray Darling Basin region in South Australia”. However, Mr Whetstone (pictured above) said the Riverland has been “short-changed” and he is furious about the current situation. “It was $20 million that was pledged to this region at the last state election and they are now short changing us $6.2 million,” he said. “The people are very disappointed to obviously miss out on funding but in the same token, we are now being held out to dry being told that if you didn’t receive funding this time, you can reapply for Commonwealth funding. “That Commonwealth funding is go-

We’re committed to the fund ing to be shared right around the Murray Darling Basin, it’s not a regional program for the Riverland. “That $100 million will be shared between four states in the Murray Darling Basin under their Regional Economic Diversification Program. “We don’t know whether these businesses who have applied to the Futures Fund actually qualify for an economic diversification program.” With 17 applications assessed in the final round of the fund and only six being successful, Mr Whetstone said many businesses will be disappointed after investing heavily in the application process. “They’ve had continual feedback from the government departments to amend the applications, which they’ve done and now we find the Minister is pulling the funding,” he said. “It has been poorly implemented from day one.”

SOLAR NEWS The Shift to Bigger Systems Just 18 months ago the average domestic solar system size was still under 3kw. Back then the price of Grid-Connect Solar Power Systems was approximately $3.50 per watt. Despite the fact that there were more attractive financial incentives (rebates) at that time, systems were still (by today’s standards) reasonably expensive. With the recent news that rebates are being cut back again, and earlier than expected, it is timely to point out that systems right now are half the price that they were 18 months ago. The cost savings are due to increased production by solar manufacturers and a strong Aussie dollar resulting in reduced purchase prices on imported goods. This has had the flow-on effect of encouraging people to put on larger systems that are more effective at eliminating their power bills. Average system size has nearly doubled over the last 18 months. The message here for those of you who are considering solar is: If you have missed out on the $800 rebate that has just been abolished, don’t discount solar. The bigger the system, the smaller the impact that the rebate cut has on the system price. Solar hardware is still at an all time low in terms of pricing.

THE State Government has promised Riverland residents that the remaining $6.2 million in the Sustainable Futures Fund will be spent in the region. State Regional Development Minister Gail Gago (pictured) said the $6.2 million will be used to leverage Federal funding for the region as part of the Federal Government’s $100 million Murray Darling Basin Regional Diversification Program. “With the remaning funds, we’ll use that as a leverage to that Federal funding to enable us to inject even more money into the region,” she told the Riverland Weekly.

“Under the Futures Fund currently, the State Government partners with business to fund projects and now the new Commonwealth fund is available, an additional bucket of money will be able to be accessed by the region “The Federal Government haven’t finalised the details of their fund, so that’s what we need to wait for and then we will initiate a further round of the Futures Fund. “The government’s commitment to the Futures Fund remains absolutely unchanged, so we are committed to a $20 million spend to be made available to the Riverland for diversifica-

Six businesses share in $3.8 million SIX Riverland businesses received $3.8 million of the remaining $10 million of the Riverland Sustainable Futures Fund following Tuesday’s announcement. Syntec Diamond Tools received $1.4 million towards relocating its manufacturing facilities from China to Berri, the Waikerie Community Hotel received $1 million to assist with its redevelopment, Riverland Almonds was awarded $608,252 to install a new technology radio frequency pasteuriser and retail packing line in its almond packing facility in Loxton, Orana Incorporated gained $335,000 as part of a project to set up a dry recycling operation on a coun-

State Regional Development Minister Gail Gago said she was “really pleased” with the high standard of applications and the level of diversity, with the latest round creating 83 new jobs. “The project has been a huge success,” she said. Minister Gago said $13.8 million of the fund has been spent leveraging $30.4 million in project costs and spend, cre-

ating up to 207 full time jobs. Waikerie Hotel chairman Graeme Thompson said he was “delighted” to hear the news that the facility would receive $1 million as part of the rebuild. “We were delighted and very appreciative of Ms Gago and the board of the Riverland Futures Fund for selecting us,” he said. “It just enhances the project. “In other words it will enable us to rebuild the burnt out front area to a very high quality as well as hopefully going into room refurbishment.

“We are certainly targeting the four star type accommodation. “The main draw is to try and attract more tourism to support the local economy.”

Tool company to reopen vacant Berri site ■ From Page 1 It is understood Syntec Diamond Tools managing director Dennis Clift showed interest in several sites across the district before settling on the former National Foods facility, which ceased production in 2010. “We met with them

a few times and I took them through the factory to have a look,” Berri Barmera Council chief executive officer David Beaton said. “It’s bigger than what they need but it’s got the power requirements that they have, so there may well be an opportunity for other busi-

nesses to partner with them and use the space as well.” Mr Beaton said after discussions with the business, Syntec has stated local workforce will be required at the Berri site. “They will be able to fill most of those postions that they’ve got from within the region, so they are bringing some of their

plant back from China, they are buying some new equipment in from Germany and India, so it will be excellent.” Speaking to ABC Radio, Mr Clift said Syntec was looking to move either in China or outside of the country due to increased costs and difficulty of doing business. The Riverland Sustainable Futures Fund

provided that option. “We did some number crunching and we found it was viable to bring it back into Australia,” he said. “The reality is if we never went to China we wouldn’t have had the opportunity to come back, we probably would have ended up purchasing off sub-contractors in China and shut our production entirely.”

Minister Gago said it is “highly likely” that unsuccessful applications from the latest round of the fund will be able to reapply. “We certainly will be encouraging them to do so,” she said. “It is most important people don’t get out there and put out misinformation and create doubt and confusion when there is this wonderful opportunity for additional funds and additional business growth and additional new jobs. “What are we trying to do, scare off the Feds so that they take their money and spend it in some other region?”

Motorists hit with infringements BERRI business owners and employees are being hit with parking fines after a crackdown on illegal parking by the local council. Between October and November, Berri Barmera Council issued 58 expiation offences following what it claims as “concerns raised over the length of stays in on-street car parking”. A number of motorists have previously voiced concerns about on-street parking limits not being long enough.

Miss Pangallo has been forced to park a considerable distance from her work due to a lack of long term parking close to businesses. “On Thursday nights, I work until 9pm and by then it is dark and I have to walk down there,” she said. Berri Barmera Council environmental services and special projects manager Gary Brinkworth said council felt it was important to allow shoppers to be able to park close to businesses, particularly at Christmas time.

The idea of the time zones is to try and encourage a turnover of those car parks. As a result council will consider undertaking a car parking assessment within the Berri town centre in the 2013/14 budget with costs estimated to be about $12,000. Local woman Maria Pangallo works in the township of Berri and has had three parking fines in the last month. “Where are you supposed to park around here?” she said.

“The idea of the time zones is to try and encourage a turnover of those car parks to allow shoppers access to the shops,” Mr Brinkworth said. “Long term car parking doesn’t provide that opportunity so that’s why the town centre has time zones. “We have had time zones down there for some time and we haven’t

had an ability to provide any necessary resources to police those but it is a decision of council that we’ve allocated resources to enable our general inspector to undertake the policing of those time zones more frequently.” Mr Brinkworth said he recommends employers and employees park in unlimited time zones, such as the Berri Senior Citizens Hall, in the future as council works to resolve the parking issues. In a report to council, it states that a study of car parking in the town centre may help alleviate problems. “It may be considered appropriate to undertake a study of the car parking within the town centre which builds on the investigations already undertaken,” the report reads. “This investigation would use information already provided on the current situation of car parking and use it to produce recommendations for improving the car parking situation as policing the time zones only addresses one aspect of the issue we

currently face. “This would need to consider the needs for both long and short term car parking and the safety of pedestrian linkages to the long term parking areas.” Most car parking spaces in the Berri central business district are restricted to 15 minutes and up to two hours with fines for overstaying the limits generally at about $44.

Sharley accepts new role as general manager of peak tourism body TONY sharley was announced as the general manager of Destination Riverland this week. Following an extensive recruitment process to fill the position, Destination Riverland chairperson Joan Hall said she and members of the board were delighted that Mr Sharley (pictured) had accepted the role. She said Mr Sharley had made a significant contribution to the formative months and the many early achievements of Destination Riverland as executive officer. “Tony’s experience, networks and enthusiasm for growing local tour-

ism made him an ideal choice,” Ms Hall said. Ms Hall added that Tony would now make the transition from consultant to a member of staff joining project assisant Rebecca Jeisman as part of the team at Destination Riverland. In the coming months, Mr Sharley will be working on securing funding streams to support the Riverland Tourism Indus-

try, complete a 2013 marketing and promotions plan, launch a Riverland tourism website, implement the Riverland Destination Action Plan (DAP), in partnership with the SATC and create opportunities to sell Riverland tourism products in international markets. Meanwhile, there are strong signs that 2012/13 will be the strongest in regards to tourism in the region in recent years following last week’s release of the Riverland Tourism Outlook publication. Produced by Destination Riverland, volume one of the new Riverland Tourism Outlook publi-

cation reports on growth in a number of Riverland events over the past 12 months. Mr Sharley said the region has had an exciting tourism year in 2012 with increased enquiries across the five Riverland Visitor Information Centres compared to 2011 and three of the major hotels (Renmark, Berri and Loxton) recording an increase in occupancy and revenue in 2011/12 compared to 2010/11. “The Outlook also lists several new and exciting tourism developments that will strengthen our appeal to visitors” he said.

Franks said he is hopeful that a big crowd will be in attendance again this year. “We had crowds of over 3000 people last year and it’s building, so if we get 3500 we’ll be quite happy,” he said. “It is a good Riverland event that gets people talking and it is a meeting place.” Mr Franks said many people travel from outside

the region to the event and then remain in town for a number of nights. “Hopefully it brings a lot of people in and they stay for three, four or five days,” he said. “People have to drive here, they’ll stay the night and hopefully before they drive back they’ll have breakfast and lunch and have a look around.”

Entertainment by That 80s Band, New Romantics, Hard 2 Handle, the Funkees, local DJs and Adelaide guests Ryley and VIP is sure to be a drawcard between the Renmark Club and the Renmark Hotel. The event runs from 6pm to 1am and there will be courtesy bus options available from areas across the Riverland.

TWILIGHT FARMERS’ MARKET

Prepare for Christmas day at the twilight farmers’ market

S

INCE its introduction two years ago, the twilight Riverland Farmers’ Market has continued to grow as a popular destination in the lead up to Christmas. Offering everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, seafood to crafts and festive gifts, the market is expected to attract hundreds of people to the Berri Senior Citizens Hall tomorrow from 4.30 to 8.30pm. Not-for-profit organisation Food Riverland, which runs the market, is encouraging locals and tourists alike to support the event held on Crawford Terrace, Berri. “Everyone should come down with their family and friends and support a local event,” market manager Rosalyn Kambouris said. The market has options for the perfect Christmas lunch or dinner including fruit, meat, seafood, puddings and much more. Having the market in the twilight time slot means people can head down after work. “It’s a great place to get your Christmas goodies and last minute

gifts such as festive hampers and gift baskets,” Rosalyn said. With up to 35 stallholders, including five craft stalls, there is sure to be something for everyone but Rosalyn warns that you need to get in early to beat the rush. After a huge turn out to last year’s twilight market, organisers have worked hard to change the layout of the night, expanding the outside area to create further space. There will be plenty of colour at the market with Glenview Poultry Farm’s Warner Brothers characters Foghorn Leghorn and Humpty Dumpty making their first public appearance in the Riverland, Arrosto Coffee mascot Mr Bean will also be in attendance, there will be plenty of giveaways for the children, as well as a major raffle and Blossom the Fiary will be providing face painting. Entertainment will be provided by Side by Side Band, Bill Johnson and Rosie Clark Dance Studio. Delicious food options amongst the many stalls include catering

by Ed and Judy’s Bush Cooking, Daljit’s Indian Cuisine and The Saffron Alibi to go with a drop of red or white from 919 Wines and top beer from Woolshed Brewery. The regular Saturday morning Riverland Farmers’ Market will then return on December 29 offering produce and goodies for the New Year’s eve lunches, dinners and parties.

■ FRESH: There is plenty to offer at the market including fresh bread and delicious cherries.

Leave fruit and vegetables at home

Historic bell tower to be relocated

Deluxe Gazebo ■ HELPING: The Dulcie Pistoor Bell tower recently being removed during a bid to find a buried time capsule at Lyrup Primary School. Principal John Trobbiani said it was an emotional time for the remaining five students and the staff, however he said it was important to remember that schools were more than bricks and whiteboards. “Schools aren’t the buildings and the equipment, it’s the relationships that people build and the things you do together,” he said. Mr Trobbiani and four of the students will make their way to Monash Primary next year and were looking forward to their new adventure.

“We know it has been coming, we have planned for that and we supported each other,” he said. “Those people will go onto different classes and be able to continue their learning, it wont be as familiar for a little while but everyone will move on.” The students had their final day at the school last Wednesday with pupil free days taking place on Thursday and Friday to make way for removalists and trades people.

THE Dulcie Pistoor bell tower that has been a feature of Lyrup Primary School for 50 years is expected to be installed at SS Ellen Park after the school closed last week. A recmmendation was made during Tuesday night’s Renmark Paringa Council meeting to move the bell, which was recently dug up from the school grounds. It was a sad moment as the school’s siren rang for the last time on Friday afternoon after the school decided to close its doors in June.

TRAVELLERS are being urged to leave their fruit at home for the holidays and help prevent the spread of fruit fly, according to the Tri-State Fruit Fly Committee. The committee said that with a number of outbreaks affecting the Fruit Fly Exclusion Zone it was important that travellers didn’t make the problem worse. “Warmer weather over the holiday break provides more favourable conditions for fruit fly,” committee spokesman Hugh Flett said. “It’s important to note that despite there being several outbreaks in the zone, the rules that restrict the transport of fresh fruit and vegetables still apply. “These rules are in place to prevent the spread of fruit fly into major fruit growing regions. “Random roadblocks operate throughout the zone during the holidays to enforce these rules and heavy fines can apply to people caught breaching the restrictions.” Mr Flett said fruit often looks perfectly sound on the outside. “Only when fruit is opened can an infestation be detected,” he said. “The only safe way to ensure you’re not letting fruit fly hitch a ride with you is to leave your fruit at home and buy some when you arrive at your destination.” Mr Flett said communities within the zone also had a role to play during the holiday break. “If local residents have backyard fruit trees they should take care to clean up any fruit lying on the ground,” he said. “If they’re expecting visitors these holidays, it’s a good idea to let them know about the restrictions.”

Volunteers help save regent parrots

Berri Carols by the River

AN Aboriginal Learning on Country (ALOC) team recently helped to monitor the nationally threatened regent parrot along the River Murray. Those in the ALOC team, which is employed by the Aboriginal Lands Trust of South Australia (ALT) and is based at the Kungun Centre in Glossop, are undertaking a 12 month traineeship towards a double certificate 3 in Conservation Land Management and Indigenous Land Management. Although the team has been involved in a range of activities, a particular highlight has been the their involvement with the Regent Parrot Recovery Project. ALOC trainee Josh Stone said the team undertook regent parrot surveys at dawn and dusk along the river and adjacent wetlands between Blanchetown and Swan

Reach throughout September. “It will be good to see the regent parrot map next year and know that some of those dots are from the observations we’ve made and records we’ve collected, it makes us realise how important the work we are doing really is,” Mr Stone said. ALOC supervisor George Lovegrove said the team has also been involved in a wide range of other conservation and land management projects and accredited training along the River Murray. “The team works closely with a range of great partners such as Natural Resources, SA Murray-Darling Basin and a number of Local Action Planning groups to make a real difference on the ground,” Mr Lovegrove said. “As well as their two certificate courses, the team has also

For more information on the ALOC team or to discuss their involvement in other local projects, contact Bev Coombes from the Aboriginal Lands Trust of South Australia on (08) 8169 1500.

sage. Take the turkey out of the oven and raise the temperature to 200C (fan) or180C (gas). Brush the sage and onion butter all over the turkey and return to the oven, uncovered, for 45 mins until crisp and dark golden. If you’re making the roasties, then start them in the oven when the turkey goes back in, uncovered.

Method

7kg fresh turkey 2 onions, halved 1 lemon, quartered 75g soft butter 3 tbsp finely chopped fresh sage 2 tbsp plain flour 200ml Marsala wine or Madeira 400-500ml hot chicken stock 1 tbsp cranberry jelly

1. Heat oven to 170C on a fan forced overn or 150C on gas for 3 to 4 minutes and place the turkey in a large roasting tin. Tuck 3 of the onion halves and the lemon quarters into the cavity and season. Cover with foil, make sure there’s plenty of space between the turkey and foil for the air to circulate and seal the edges tightly so that no steam escapes. Roast for 4 hrs.

3. Transfer the turkey to a warm serving plate, cover loosely with foil and leave to rest for 30 mins. Tip the juices out of the pan into a bowl, leave for a moment to settle, then scoop the but-

2. Meanwhile, finely chop the remaining onion half, and mix with the butter and

tery oil from the surface into a separate bowl. Spoon 2 tbsp of this oil back into the tin and return to the heat. 4. Stir the flour into the tin using a wooden spoon, scraping the residue off the bottom of the tin as you go. Cook for 2 mins, then stir in the Marsala or Madeira and bring to the boil. Make the reserved turkey juices up to 500ml using hot chicken stock and pour into the tin. Bring to the boil and simmer for a few mins, then add cranberry jelly. Keep warm until ready to serve. Sensei at karate champs RIVERLAND sensei Robert Matthews was the only South Australian to compete at the Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation’s (SKIF) World Championships in Sydney recently. SKIF is a worldwide non-profit organisation with branches in over 130 countries and holds the championships every three years. With the current economic downturn 49 countries were still able to send teams to this year’s event. This year’s championships included 61 events in total covering Kata (forms) Kumite (points sparring) and Yakusoku Kumite (prearranged sparring) with both team and individual events. Japan is known as the home of Shotokan Karate and its competitors rightfully took home 17 gold medals. The Australian team of 77 members did well to finish in second place with six gold (five of these for Masters Kata events and one for Masters Yakusoku Kumite), six silver (three being for kata and three for kumite) and 13 bronze medals (five being for kata and eight for kumite). As part of the Australian team, Robert Matthews (Sensei) of Kingston-On-Murray, was the only competitor to be entered from South Australia. Matthews competed in the Mens Masters 50 to 54 years division in both individual Kata and individual Kumite. However, he did not make it into the second round. With more than 30 competitors in both of Matthews’ events it was not going to be easy but he said he enjoyed his time on the mat. Matthews (Sensei) also had the opportunity to judge at the international event and met over 200 SKIF judges, most of them instructors too, from all parts of the world. Held in conjunction with the world championships was a two-day S.K.I. Yudansha-kai (black belt society) training seminar, which was led by Kanazawa (Hirokazu) Kancho and other SKIF general headquarters instructors. Matthews said it was fantastic to train with like-minded karateka from all corners of the world. There was also an extra training session for 10 to 16 year olds with surviving karateka from the tsunami affected

■COMPETITION: Kingston-On-Murray’s Robert Matthews was part of the Australian team competing at the Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation world championships held in Sydney recently. area of Japan known as the SKIF Youth Friendship Exchange Project. “This was a fantastic opportunity for the Santella boys, Bradley and Luke of Waikerie, to get together with some Japanese karateka of their own age, for some hard training in the basics which they are so very familiar with, Matthews said. Following the Yudansha training over 160 nominees were examined for black belt at all levels. Waikerie’s Bradley Santella successfully attainined his first black belt - Shodan, and his dad Peter Santella obtained his second black belt - Nidan, during the event. Julie Lehmann, of Kingston-On-Murray, also attained Nidan and Robert Matthews (Sensei) attained Yondan. A cutting of the centenary celebration cake ceremony also took place later in the evening and was a highlight. Mr Dunhill, in his address, stated that cricket in Renmark was almost 125 years old but 1912 was the year that competitions, in which a number of different shields were contested, began and continued, apart from the war years, to the present day. The wealth of many wonderfully talented players, the fine exemplary sportsmanship displayed and the camaraderie engendered should have been noted, according to Mr Dunhill. He also expressed con-

cern that people outside the Renmark district often failed to recognise the connection between the RDCA and RTCA clubs over years. The ability for each to help the other, in difficult times, ought not to be forgotten. Much reminiscing took place with great interest shown in the many pieces of memorabilia on display, as well as the updated honour boards.

Mr Dunhill said the organisers, though pleased with the staging of the celebration, and the opportunity to play a small part in the previous night’s Sportsman’s Dinner at the Renmark Club, would certainly have hoped for greater numbers at the main function.

CHARLIE’S SPORTS GOSS WITH GRAHAM CHARLTON

Swimmers show strong form ■ THE first swimming carnivals for 201213 which were cancelled at the end of November when severe storms hit the region were rescheduled for last weekend. At Waikerie the rejuvenated club which has been strengthened by the arrival of a number of new swimmers, particularly in the lower grades, put in one of its best performances for some time in going down to Berri by only three points, 241 to 238. Admittedly, Berri was missing a number of its stronger swimmers but Waikerie is now showing that it is a force to be reckoned with and is to be congratulated on the commitment and determination to grow its club. Renmark with 34 swimmers and Loxton with 31 competitors met at Renmark with the home club winning 328 to 228. Like Waikerie, Loxton has attracted a number of new swimmers this season making it very competitive in the lower grades in particular, while for Renmark, the team is displaying exceptional depth and is dominant in the higher grades. The next event on the local swimming calendar is the Berri Open Carnival at the Hayden Stoeckel Pool on Saturday, January 5. A number of Riverland swimmers will then be in Gawler the following weekend for the South Australian Country Championships.

■ From Page 24 With the ball, fast bowler Kale Smith has picked up 13 wickets at an average of 23.15 and Jake Albrecht has snared 11 wickets at 21.73. Gutsche said remaining undefeated is an achievement, as long as the team takes out the ultimate prizes. “Like I said on Saturday to the boys, we are in a good spot but it’s not worth winning all of these games if we can’t win the grand finals,” he said. In other results on Saturday, Renmark failed to successfully chase Waikerie-Ramco’s 9/271. Renmark finished on 138 with Simon Turk top scoring on 37, while Ben Townsend made 63 in the second innings.

Top class golf at Barmera ■ TOP class golf was played at the Barmera course last week with Glen Millard, Bob Cornwell and Jordan Wright all claiming wins. Millard hit 42 points during a Wednesday stableford to lead Paul Baker, 38 and Mark Evans 36. On Saturday, Cornwell finished on top in a par competition with a score of plus five, ahead of Ian Chamberlain and Millard. Wright edged out Kevin Maxwell on Sunday during a stableford competition.

Carter’s all-round performance ■ A FINE all-round performance by promising 16-year-old Waikerie Gold cricketer Ricky Carter was a major contribution in his club’s comprehensive victory, 6 for 250 to 153 against Perponda in the Mid Murray competition last Saturday. Gold batted first with Carter top scoring with 89 not out and solid support coming from Jason English 38 not out, Jonno Walding 33 and Clinton Williams 30. For Perponda, Zac Schubert captured 3 for 35 and Peter Leedham snared 3 for 37. In Perponda’s innings, Rohan Zadow top scored with 46, Schubert made 29 and for Waikerie Gold Lance Twigden took 5/14, Walding 2 for 46 and Carter 2 for 17.

T The Riverland’s most authoritative sports commentator ...

Silver for volleyballers ■ NINETEEN high school teams, 11 from Loxton and 8 from Renmark, have returned from last week’s annual Australian Schools Volleyball Cup in Melbourne with reputations at the mammoth event not only intact but enhanced. As usual our schools were competitive against the odds with Renmark, in particular, bringing home silver medals from three competitions. Many people at the tournament continued to express amazement at the high standard at which the Riverland teams operated despite their involvement here at home being almost of ‘amateur’ status compared with the ‘professional’ structure of many specialised volleyball schools. The behaviour and sportsmanship of our Riverland students at the event also continues to be noticed and acknowledged by friend and foe. So even without the competitive performances out on the

court, all members of our school parties that make their annual trip to this tournament that attracts schools from all over Australia and beyond continue to be fine ambassadors for our region. Renmark High School, a veteran at the Schools Cup, certainly showed signs of a return to its former glory years with its three teams finishing runners up in p their competitions.

medal playoff. In under 17 open boys division two consisting of 12 teams, Renmark won through to the top eight and finished second in its four team pool to advance to the semi finals where it defeated Adelaide, which had topped both its preliminary round and top eight pools. In the gold medal game Renmark lost to Queensland’s

Many people at the tournament expressed amazement at the high standard by Riverland teams. In open girls division two it finished top of its pool, one of four each comprising four teams in the preliminary rounds then in the two pool top eight section, finished second behind Queensland’s Emmanuel College. That took the team to the semi-final stage where it defeated fellow South Australian side Willunga before going down again to Emmanuel in the gold

St Peters. Renmark’s other silver medal came in under 16 division two girls where both Riverland schools topped their preliminary round pools and ended up in the same six team group in the top 12 stage. In that group, Renmark finished second and Loxton was third behind Queensland’s Ormiston.

Moving into the semi finals, Renmark defeated SA’s Brighton before losing the gold medal playoff to Ormiston, which by the way it had defeated in the preliminary rounds. Loxton finished fifth overall. Renmark also did well amongst 16 teams in under 16 division two boys reaching the top eight for sixth place overall. Meanwhile Loxton, acknowledged for its 10th year at the event, had teams in both the open division one competitions. In the girls division it finished third and fifth behind Victoria’s Berwick in the preliminary and top 12 pools respectively and went on to defeat New Zealand’s Whakatane for ninth place amongst 20 teams. The boys team finished 13th amongst 15 teams. Through the grades Loxton also lost a playoff for bronze medals to Victoria’s Bendigo SE in under 17 girls division three.

Loxton scores crucial bowls victory ■ LOXTON scored a crucial two shot win against neighbour Loxton RSL in men’s division one pennant bowls on Saturday. Played at the RSL greens, Steve Rose’s rink gave the home team every chance of an upset victory with a resounding 24-9 win against Terry Thurston’s side but generally the other Loxton combinations led by Trevor Schulz, Vic Pavia and Peter Kimber controlled their match ups. Loxton, with 10 games completed, needed the points to strengthen its hold on the valuable second position on the ladder as Renmark with a runaway four rinks to nil, 115 shots to 65, result against Renmark RSL, is on the march and now only trail Loxton by 13 points. In the other match on Sat-

urday, Berri kept its undefeated season intact although the game again confirmed its opponent Barmera no longer carries any easy beat tag. Only the Mark Kubank rink winning 30-18 over John Morena gave Berri a seemingly comfortable 91-76 victory. With Berri having a mortgage on the minor premiership, interest will now centre on the battle for the double chance and places in the top four. At this stage Loxton has 95 points in second spot but the following teams, Renmark on 82, Barmera 69, Loxton RSL 64 and Waikerie 47, have all played one game less and remain finals chances. Renmark RSL, having played 10 matches, has 34 points and is

obviously down on confidence so will need a major form reversal to turn its season around. This Saturday before a break until January 5, Barmera plays Waikerie in a crucial match for both sides, Loxton meets Renmark RSL and Renmark hosts Loxton RSL in another important outing. In fact, in rating last season’s grand finalist Waikerie as still being a finals hope, the outcome of this week’s clash and then its meeting with another rival Loxton RSL in the following round would appear to be season defining. ■ ON TARGET: Gary Meyer sends down a bowl for Berri in division two of local lawn bowls. Riverland hockey players taste success in Fiji ■ RIVERLAND pair Tara Allister and Steven Trezise have been involved in some history making as members of the Australian under 21 Country hockey teams at the Oceania Pacific Cup tournament in Fiji. Steven’s men’s team won the event for the first time ever when it defeated host country Fiji 7-5 in an exciting final. Coming off a well earned rest, the Australians were all over the Fijian side early to lead 5-1 at half time but the home side fought back in the latter stages of the contest. In the women’s competi-

tion Tara had to settle for silver as it was Fiji that won the event for the first time with a 2-1 victory in a see sawing final against the Australians.

New hockey league I NOTICE that hockey is going the same way as cricket with a newly formed Hockey India League to start on January 16. Of the overseas countries Australia, with 15, had the most players selected with Kookaburra great Jamie Dwyer, Eddie Ockenden, Fergus Kavanagh and Mark Knowles amongst

those involved. There are five franchises each with 14 Indian and 10 overseas players. Current Kookaburra coach Ric Charlesworth will be in charge of the Mumbai Magicians with four Australian players, while the 2004 Olympic gold medal winning mentor Barry Dancer will head the Jaypee Punjab Warriors with six Aussies, including Dwyer. Dwyer was third in the list of top ten player prices at $78, 200 behind the Netherlands’ Teun De Nooijer $87,400 and Germany’s Moritz Fuerste $83,950 with Ockenden eighth on $65,000.

Not much luck for Les in the ‘Sport of Kings’ ■ SOME time ago I wrote an article on local sports identity John Holzer and reflected on his life time interest in thoroughbred racing. In any chat with John the subject inevitably gets around to the ‘Sport of Kings’ and I recall on one occasion he spoke of an hilarious interview conducted by legendary race caller Bert Bryant and another legend, jumps jockey Les Boots. Recently I stumbled upon an article on that 1987 radio classic. Les Boots considered himself the worst jumps jockey in the world having had 39 rides and

falling off on 40 occasions. In one race he fell off, caught the horse and remounted, only to fall off again at the next fence. He rode for 18 years in Adelaide and reckoned he spent 12 of them in hospital, breaking nearly every bone in his body. Bookies would post odds of 100/1 for any of Boots’ mounts, no matter what the horse’s form. He said to Bryant “once the South Australian Jockey Club was going to bar me from riding because I was putting too big a strain on their workers compensation fund”.

“My wife used to wrap my pyjamas in a brown paper bag and put them with my riding gear which was embarrassing when other jockeys spotted them. “She ended up barring me from taking the kids on the merrygo-round at the local shows after I fell off three times. “The nurses at the Adelaide General Hospital used to buy the racing papers, not to have a bet but to check if I had a ride, so they could make up my usual bed in advance. “I once fell off at the first fence, breaking my leg, then fell out of the ambulance on the way back

to the casualty room then while they were carrying me across the lawn I fell off the stretcher. “One misty foggy day at Victoria Park I fell off at the first jump and being a bit winded, was lying on the track waiting for the ambulance to arrive when through the fog I heard this voice saying ‘I think we will have to shoot him’. “I beat the ambulance back to the jockey room where they sedated me and explained they were talking about the horse.” It is probably no real surprise that Les Boots did not ride a winner during his career.

Aboriginal All Stars put on unforgettable performance

The day I saw Aussie Rules football magic ■ IF YOU happen to get into a conversation with Barmera man Sam Mitchell it is a sure bet the talk will get around to Australian Football. I walked with Sam at the annual Make A Wish fundraiser at Lake Bonney a couple of months ago and in a chat involving anything and everything about football I happened to mention that one of the most amazing games I had ever seen was at Mildura in the early 1980s between an All Australian Aboriginal team and a combined Richmond-Sunraysia side. Telling Sam how I regretted not keeping any details of the match he solved that problem within a few days when some information on that game held at Sarah Oval, Mildura, on Sunday October 1, 1983, arrived at my desk. I recall being made aware of the event by a big man, John King, who did a lot of work with indigenous footballers and as a recruiting officer for the St Kilda Club came to this area chasing up some local juniors. A good friend of mine and colleague at the Loxton Football Club at the time, Colin ‘Curly’ Jackson was engaged as a trainer for the AFL All Stars aboriginal team for the day and I travelled to Mildura with him. I have vivid recollections of not only an unbelievable display of football but of the bond between the indigenous group that had assembled from all parts of Australia for the game. I recall an electric atmosphere in the change rooms prior to the game and at one stage Curly pulling me aside and remarking on the amazing bond and relationship

between the players and officials, no matter what level of football they came from. And they certainly took that uncanny understanding out onto the oval playing as if linked by radar with unbelievable speed and vision, silky skills, with bullet like handpasses travelling ‘kicking’ distance and disposal by foot, long and short, almost laser like. They were simply awesome which led to one scribe reporting on the display as a “spell binding performance and football magic”. Getting this team, indeed the game itself, together was an “his car had broken down at Lake apart for a 37-11 (233) to 14-11 Cullulleraine”. (95) result but honestly if ever the amazing feat. Which explains why he is an comment ‘the final score was not a Michael Wanganeen, the uncle of 1993 Brownlow medallist insert on a team photo taken prior true indication of the contest’ was true this was it. Since that memorable day coach Wanganeen has said “we looked to set the standard for future generations to aspire to. “There is a special bond between the group and even now it is an honour to have been a part of a special event like that. “Whenever members of the team and management meet the match is always a talking point.” And I am so pleased that Sam and I happened to talk about it as it brought back memories of an amazing occasion. One that would make it no surprise to anyone fortunate to witness the amazing display of skill and understanding between the indigenous players that so many of them provide us with so much entertainment as superstars in the AFL game today.

Yacht club members to compete national championships

Loxton continues to win after competition splits

■ FICKLE winds disrupted the normal format for the annual Queen of the Lake Trophy race at the Lake Bonney Yacht Club on Saturday. Usually a long race but with a shorter course for any smaller yachts, a deterioration in wind patterns after they had looked promising earlier in the day resulted in officials deciding to shorten both courses. In the senior division, first and fastest honours went to Mark Pfennig with ‘The Matrix’ while ‘Sea Chook’ with Tim and Josh Ridley aboard took out the juniors. While three LBYC yachts, Mark One class in Pfennig’s ‘The Matrix’ and Steve Thomas’ ‘Just Do It’ and the Mark Two of Peter Dunk and Kirsten Thomas will be at the 41st Mosquito Catamaran nationals at the Gippsland Lakes, Paynesville, Victoria, the local club will be in recess until Saturday January 12 when Championship Heat Four will be held. Sailing training will also recommence on that day. Mark Pfennig, Steve Thomas, Peter Dunk and Kirsten Thomas were all at last season’s Nationals at Rivoli Bay in South Australia but there will be two new boats in 2012-13. Pfennig sailed ‘Nebuchadnezzar’ into 10th position in the Mark One’s at that event but has now turned to ‘The Matrix’, while the Dunk-Thomas crew now has ‘Splashes of Brilliance’ in place of ‘National Progression’ which finished fourth in Mark Twos . ‘Splashes of Brilliance’ was formerly ‘Salpicon De Resplendor’ owned and sailed by Peter Dunk’s father David. This year’s titles start on December, 29 and conclude on January 3.

■ REIGNING premier Loxton immediately put pressure on its rivals in the first matches in the new three team A grade softball competition last week. Firstly, on Wednesday night it defeated Cobdogla 9-5 and then on Saturday it won 14-10 against Berri. Showing strong player depth at the club, Loxton also won comfortably in the first round of the B grade competition 15-2 against Lyrup, while Cobdogla defeated Waikerie 10-2. Through the other grades there were two draws, Berri and Loxton Blue ending up 9-9 in the C grade and in a high scoring affair Loxton and Berri could not be separated at 37 apiece in the primary grade. Meanwhile in last Friday night’s baseball, Loxton Wildcats scored an upset win over recently installed premiership favourite Renmark Blue, 6-3. In a competitive clash between the two Berri teams, Red, the defending champion, had a solid workout against Blue in winning 8-2, while Lyrup went on its winning way defeating Renmark White 15-3. Loxton inflicted the first defeat of the season on Renmark Blue with a more even batting

performance, scoring consistently through the first four innings as players like Steve Dack and Josh Voigt put bat to ball. Dack’s return to form on the mound was also a major factor in the Loxton victory. Internal club rivalry probably brought the best out of the Berri club’s number two side, Blue, in its clash with Red and it was only the great depth in the reigning premier’s batting that

converted a competitive contest into a six run win. As we suggested last week Lyrup, with its impressive displays in recent outings, seems poised to seriously challenge the big guns when the competition resumes on January 11 after a break for Christmas. The association proposes to take the game to Waikerie with a likely round on February 9, while games are also being considered for Lyrup oval.

Issue No. 260

Loxton’s winning feeling By BRAD PERRY LOXTON is shaping as the firm favourite to take out cricket premierships in both the shorter and longer forms of the game as it goes into the Christmas break undefeated. The A grade skittled Berri for just 53 in Riverland cricket on the weekend on the back of a magnificent hundred by veteran Michael Gutsche. With many locals convinced Loxton is on the verge of one of its most successful eras, coach Gutsche said the club has much depth.

“We train pretty hard and we’ve developed a good bunch of players in the last three years,” he said. “We’ve kept the core players there and with juniors coming up who have played A grade for two or three years now, everyone is improving.” Led by wicketkeeper and captain Rhett Colls, Loxton has dominated the 2012/13 season to date with batsmen Josh Deren (268 runs at an average of 67), Brad Walter (266 at 53.20) and Gutsche (227 at 75.67) leading the charge. ■ Continued Page 22
