Loxton cricketers gain Outbacks’ selection Two Loxton cricketers have been selected to play for the Outbacks – the South Australian country cricket team early in the new year in Bundaberg, Queensland. It is the first time either Josh Deren, 29, or Shaun Reilly, 19, have made the team, and signals a giant step forward for the younger of the two who is aiming for a professional cricketing career. They will both be having a quiet New Year’s Eve this year with the team flying out of Adelaide on New Year’s Day in readiness for the first game against Western Australia on January 3. Reilly hopes the Outbacks’ selection will help him progress to a professional cricket career – with the Redbacks then hopefully playing for Australia.’ The leg spin bowler made the Outbacks’ squad last summer but “didn’t make it through”. To that end he is playing district cricket for Tea Tree Gully and spent four months playing in Darwin in the off season for South Australia to boost his experience and skills, and he believed that had helped him gain selection. "I was in the South Australian under 19 squad last year and I had a pretty good season playing down at Tea Tree Gully," Reilly said. "I had a couple of trial matches with the Outbacks and didn't do too badly. "I went up and played first grade in Darwin for Southern Districts." That was after he completed his Certificate 3 in Horticulture at Roseworthy Agricultural College mid this year - from June until the end of September. He is now back working with his parents David and Anita at Loxton on their date and grape farm but spends a lot of time travelling to Adelaide for cricket. "I have been back and forward since

early October, playing my first game for Tea Tree Gully seconds this season on October 5," Reilly said. "I would love to get a gig with the Redbacks in days to come. "I did a couple of days training with them in Darwin." Reilly said his ambition to play for Australia was "obviously a long way off" and getting a run in the first grade in Adelaide and taking wickets was his next aim. "Last year I was training four days a week with the under 19s at Tea Tree Gully." This summer he trains three nights a week in Adelaide for his district club and another night a week "by myself working with the old man in a skills session". Deren, a right-handed batsman, said it was “fantastic” to get the call saying he had been selected from coach Paul Pasculli. “It is a great opportunity.” He has played Riverland cricket for six years – initially at Monash and now for Loxton. However, he is experienced in playing at district level in Adelaide – playing for Northern Districts as a junior and then a year with Tea Tree Gully while living and working in Loxton at the ANZ Bank. “I had an offer from Tea Tree Gully to go there,” Deren said. However the rigors of travel and training for that level saw him give that away. “My wife had a child and the travel was just too much to play down there all the time,” he said.

Get home safely GETTING home safely is an important part of celebrating this Christmas. Riverland police said this week that it was fine to have a few drinks and have fun, but people needed to ensure they made it home safe after a night out. Sergeant Carol Bristow, of Berri police, said people needed to understand that getting home safe posed more difficulties when they had had too many drinks. “When out and about remember the principles of personal safety - confidence, body language, awareness of your surroundings and trusting your instincts, Sergeant Bristow said. “It is important to have a personal safety plan for a variety of situations such as using public transport or taxis or when you are out with friends. She said there were strategies that party goers needed to consider in advance. “If you feel your safety is being threatened call triple zero, she said. Importantly, people needed to have a plan to get home safely. “Don’t drink and drive – you risk killing or seriously injuring yourself and others, she said. “Travel with friends – nominate a non-drinking ‘designated driver’ and share the responsibility. “If you are using your car to get to and from an event, ensure you have parked in a well-lit area. “Be aware that you may still need a Plan B the morning after. “Don’t forget you may still be over the limit the next morning –

Michelle follows in Mother’s career footsteps

Student working towards her dream job A $4000 SCHOLARSHIP made all the difference to Loxton university student Michelle Ahrens this year. Michelle, 20, said that even with the scholarship she had worked two part-time jobs throughout the university year and would now work throughout the summer break. Flinders University instigated the scholarship program to help country students who find themselves in the same situation as Michelle was at the start of 2012 – ineligible for a Centrelink payment because she had not been supporting herself independently for 18 months – but stymied by distance from living at home while doing tertiary study. “The financial assistance helped immensely with the cost of textbooks and living expenses and generally made the transition from home to Uni an easier process,” Michelle said. “Flinders University is a great place for rural students to study and that Flinders provided great support for the transition from the country to the city.” Michelle started doing an environmental degree this year, but will follow her mother Julie into the field of teaching in 2013. She attended Berri Primary School until moving to Loxton in year seven, where she undertook year seven at that town’s primary school, completing her schooling at Loxton High School. In the year between school and university Michelle worked

■ WORKING HOLIDAYS: Michelle Ahrens packs away for uni books for the year - ready to do as much paid work as possible during the summer to fund her study next year. as a school services officer at Remark and Loxton schools and travelled to Europe. “I had been before on exchange when I was younger and I wanted to go back because I loved it,” she said. Although some of the units that she has done this year will be credited towards the Bachelor of Education, Michelle will now take another four years to finish

year double degree. “I don’t regret it because it was something that I really wanted to do and now I know it isn’t for me and it has confirmed that I really want to do education,” she said. Michelle plans to teach high school geography and German – continuing the language that she started in year seven, and which took her on a two-month

school exchange to Germany in year 10. In the future she plans to teach in rural and remote areas of the State and wants to work in an indigenous community at some stage. For now she will live at home in Loxton for the summer, saving the $273 per week cost of living on campus at Uni Hall. Michelle become eligible for Youth Allowance part way through the year which meant that she didn’t receive her full scholarship. “Even with Youth Allowance I worked two jobs all year – at a swimming centre as a swimming instructor and also with a Girls On Track program run by the Smith Family and Girl Guides for girls at risk in schools in Adelaide,” Michelle said. “I don’t think enough people know about it (the scholarship). “It is very important for uni students in affording to be able to go to university. “I will live here (during the holidays) because I get to save as much money as I can – then move back in February. “Summer is my main income for the year.” Michelle will be instructor in charge of VacSwim at Loxton Pool in January and run private lessons outside of those dates as well. She is the daughter of Wayne and Julie Ahrens, of Loxton, and has a sister Helen studying at Adelaide University, although Helen is currently in America on an exchange.

Small committee continues Rural students face greater costs to attend uni 34-year-old carol tradition FLINDERS UNIVERSITY is demonstrating its commitment to students from rural and regional Australia and those in financial need, by establishing Student Access Scholarships for students starting their studies in 2013. The establishment of the scholarships is recognition that students from rural and regional Australia often face significant financial difficulty when moving to a capital city to undertake university studies. Professor Andrew Par-

kin, Deputy Vice-Chancellor said it was very satisfying for Flinders University to be able to provide additional support for students from rural and regional Australia to relocate to Adelaide and begin their tertiary education. In 2013, 100 Flinders University Student Access Scholarships valued at $5000 each will be available. More information regarding the application process can be found at www.flinders. edu.au/scholarships

THE BARMERA Community Christmas Carols will again be held in the grounds of Bonney Lodge on Sunday, December 16 at 7pm. It continues a 34-year-old tradition that started when the Riverland Brass Band combined with the Riverland Choral Group to present the first carols evening on the original grounds of Bonney Lodge over looking Lake Bonney. The event then shifted around the town, to the trotting track, the main oval and then to the lake. Four years ago a decision was made to hold the carols at Bonney

Lodge to enable residents to also enjoy the musical program with the rest of the community. The small organising committee has put together an hour of carols, music, solo, men’s choir and readings. The carols will be led by the four Jericho brothers - Nathan, Chris, Stephen and Rohan on keyboard, trumpet, violin and flute. The community is encouraged to join the residents and staff to for a gold coin donation to aid the Riverland Christmas appeal. Access is via Hawdon Street please bring your own chair.

On Thursday Dr Harpereet Singh, Dr Janssen Ang and nurse Andrew Hansen each shaved their moustaches off – having raised close to $600 for Movember throughout the previous month. Rain waits for parade Large drops of rain splattered the tail end of the 2012 Waikerie Lions Christmas Pageant on Friday night. However, the 3000 people lining the streets and taking part would have considered themselves lucky - given a thunderstorm and rain pelted down minutes afterwards. While it put a dampener on the after pageant entertainment, late night shoppers were largely protected by business verandahs as they made their way along the streets and to visit the Christmas Wonderland at the Waikerie Institute. They were numerous musical acts playing along the street and many took the opportunity to soak up the Christmas atmosphere. The pageant had more than 30 colourful floats, led by town crier Murray Dalgleish and the SA Police Brass Band, under the control of drum major Adam Buckley. Dance schools were represented by large numbers of children, and Year of the Farmer floats were a popular theme with several outstanding efforts.

Worth the visit to Waikerie

IT IS easy to gret blase about things in your own backyard and I hope riverland residents haven’t. While in the area as relieving as editor at the Riverland Weekly I headed to Waikerie for the pageant on Friday afternoon. Despite the rain starting to bucket down I decided I really should make the effort to get a photograph of some children in Santa’s Cave. I dutifully headed to the Institute and have to admit was amazed by the

Christmas Wonderland. It truly is an amazing sight and testament to the efforts of those who go to such enormous efforts to create something to help others enjoy some Christmas spirit. I have never seen such a spectacular display in two decades and three states working as a journalist and editor in regional towns. Congratulations to all involved. On returning somewhat wet to Berri I had to tell every-

one I saw at the caravan park to make the effort to go for the drive and see it before they left the area. I hope locals from Waikerie and other Riverland towns alike don’t ignore what is on their doorstep. I urge you to make the effort to take a look. Getting in to the Christmas spirit this year will be easy for those who take the time to visit this, and the wonderful displays of lights in other Riverland towns.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Chance to remember

On Sunday, December 9 at 6.30pm the Loxton Uniting Church is holding a remembrance and candle lighting service. The service will be short, gentle and reflective with the opportunity to light a candle in memory of a lost loved one.

Christmas is a difficult time for those in bereavement. We hope the service will be a time to pause, remember and give thanks for loved ones who are no longer with us. All are most welcomed to attend. Lillian Mattner, Loxton

Salvos stock Christmas cards and decorations BERRI SALVOS store has a great deal of Christmas stock including cards and decorations. Workers at the store are busy processing large amounts of stock from the Salvos’ Adelaide warehouse and as a result the store is jammed packed with bargains. What else can I do to reduce my Energy Costs? This column could turn into a book if we covered all the things you could do to help reduce your energy usage, but here are a few suggestions to get you going.

n GIRLS: Looking glamourous for the Loxton High School Prom on Thursday night are, from left, Sara Trower, Chantel Bishop and Lauren Yard. Photos: BEV STORY

The worst offenders are air conditioning and pool pumps. By cutting down your usage of A/C or living a little cooler in winter and warmer in summer, you can drastically change your power consumption.

n GALMOUROUS: Back left, Ashleigh Langsford, Jemma Smith, front, Tori Newman and Tyla Nelson.

Pool pumps are hungry for power. Try cutting down usage times, run them offpeak or run them for a shorter period of time. A pool pump is usually about 1000w, meaning it costs around 36-44c per hour to run. (1000w = 1kw and 1kw hour of electricity is currently priced between 3644c depending on your retailer)

n LEFT: Among those at the Loxton Prom on Thursday night are, from left, Ainslie Graetz, Georgina Eckermann, Nicole Baker, Rachel Schulz, Jane Reid and Megan Schulz.

Regular use, high power items such as Tumble Dryers, Dish Washers and Washing Machines should also be on your immediate hit-list to cut down on usage.

n CELEBRATING GRADUATION: Back from left, Lachlan Forward, Brodie Schulz, Michael Reichstein, Callan Voight, front, Erika Sporn, Steph Baird and Jazzy Forward.

Try to air-dry clothes where possible, turn off unused devices at the plug, be mindful of leaving devices on that are not being used. These are some very basic things you can do to reduce usage.

Morgan Pageant

GARDENING WITH ANDREW WALLADGE

Morgan combines pageant, riverfront fair and fireworks M

Consider growing native Hibiscus

A

LYOGYNE or native Hibiscus is well worth looking at for free flowering plants to suit most gardens in the Riverland and Mallee. Most gardeners would be familiar with tropical Hibiscus and many are quite successful locally until the frost hits. The native Hibiscus is pretty much the same except that they are tolerant of poor soils and very dry conditions once established. The original species A. huegelii and A. hakeifolia are widespread across southern Australia and one glorious sight would have to be native hibiscus generously dotted over rocky hillsides in full bloom. Many new hybrids have a wide colour range from the pale yellow, pink and purple tones. They also have a long flowering period for most of the year, although individual flowers only last a day. The new hybrids tend to be denser than the original species

they have been derived from and the occasional light prune will keep them even denser. They grow quickly, so for new gardens they can be used as quick screen and fillers. I like to use some of the darker purple forms with smaller Acacia or wattles for a really strong colour contrast of purple and bright yellow. Most forms grow to 2m to 3m and some claim to stay smaller – around 1.5m to 2m. While native hibiscus tolerates dry conditions it would be a mistake to leave them to their own devises in a garden. Regular watering (say fortnightly) and feeding (spring and autumn) will mean that one will get the most out of these tough shrubs. The best way to buy Alyogyne is in bloom in order to know what colour they will be as the picture labels don’t always give an accurate idea of the flower colour. So for quick growing colourful shrubs, consider native Hibiscus.

â– HARDY STUNNER: Native Hibiscus tolerants dry conditions and provides a great display in any garden - despite individual blooms only lasting a day.

organ’s Christmas Pageant and Riverfront Fair this Saturday should be a day to remember. For the second consecutive year Morgan Community Development and Tourist Association has organised a spectacular fireworks display on the water as a finale, association chairperson Rod James said. “The fireworks display will be set on the river, on a pontoon, allowing the colours of the spectacle to light up the night sky and reflect in the water,â€? he said. Entertainment will feature the SA detachment of the Royal Australian Navy Band, rock band My Volition, and many creative floats, decorated bikes, prams, and novelty costumes such as Smokey the CFS Koala. The afternoon will get underway at 2.30pm with the Riverfront Fair. It will have food and drinks stalls, variety stalls, games, rides for children and lots more. There will be live music from 3pm, followed by the award winning Morgan Christmas Pageant starting at 6pm, from the marshalling point at the Lookout on Railway Terrace. It will follow the same route as in 2011 - down between the hotels twice before making their way down to the riverfront. More than 50 colourful maginative floats took part in 2011, making the event a huge success and organisers are hoping to see as many businesses, community groups and individuals join together in the spirit of the season again for 2012. Float entries, decorated prams and bikes and fancy dress costumes are encouraged so put on your creative hats, as there are many prizes to be won. Float entry applications are available from Morgan Internet and Resource Centre or Morgan Riverview CafĂŠ. Last year Morgan’s riverfront fair and evening fireworks were enjoyed by 3000 spectators. Stall holders are invited to please contact Lin Petros on 85402643 or Heather Pinnington on 0419853534 for a site on Morgan’s picturesque riverbank. At the conclusion of the pageant, Santa and the 2012 Christmas Pageant Princess will distribute free Christmas goodie bags to all children under 12 years of age.

Ph: 8540 3301

â– PAGEANT TIME: The SA detachment of the Royal Australian Navy Band will return to Morgan for the Christmas Pageant again this year, as will the most popular visitor, Father Christmas.

Special invited guests again include Member for Stuart Dan Van Holst Pellekaan and Mid Murray Council mayor Dave Burgess. Both were among the many who attended Morgan Pageant Day last year, and commented that they and their families were impressed with the great atmosphere, friendly crowd and fantastic evening fireworks display. “Our recently appointed Mid Murray Council chief executive officer Russell Peake, will also be present this year, and it’s hoped that many families and friends are able to attend this wonderful event and help us to make the day one that all remember, Mr James said. “Make sure you don’t miss December 8 at Morgan, for a bigger and better Pageant day than ever. He said the association and Morgan community appreciated the generous and ongoing support of Mid Murray Council. All are invited to come to Morgan, enjoy the Christmas Pageant, the fine food, craft and amusement stalls, live music and the spectacular fireworks display.

Christmas in Renmark

Thousands expected at pageant

BETWEEN 3000 and 5000 people are expected to watch this Friday’s 2012 Renmark Club Christmas Pageant. The pageant will kick off at the Renmark Hotel end of town at 6.30pm and make its way from Murray Avenue to finish up at Ral Ral Avenue, near the Renmark Paringa Public Library. Renmark Christmas Pageant Committee publicity officer Darren Letton said that 24 floats were confirmed as entries on Tuesday, which would mean at least 30 floats by the time emergency service personnel such as the Country Fire Service and police got involved. “We might get a few more at the last minute and that is what we are expecting,” Mr Letton said. He said some of the most spectacular floats in recent years had been those from Deville’s Refrigeration and

Renmark Hospital. His own business Glen View Poultry has made a concerted effort with its pageant float for three years but is yet to take the top prize. However, he said community groups and businesses, while keen to win the perpetual trophy, tended to prepare a float to raise awareness of themselves and as a way of thanking the community for its support over the past year. “I have got a bit of a surprise for everybody,” he promised of the Glen View Poultry float. Commentary on the Christmas pageant will be given by Riverland ABC Saturday morning presenters Glen O’Brien and Tim Jackson, who are also among the event’s judges. Prizes are awarded for best overall float, best not for profit or community group and best decorated bike.

Riverlanders’ generosity shines through appeal THE GENEROSITY of Riverlanders is evident in the fantastic response to this year’s Christmas Appeal. That is according to appeal coordinator Mrs Cheryle Taylor who said the number of toys received had been fantastic. “We are a bit slow on food, Mrs Taylor said. “We will probably end up with just over 400 applications. “I reckon it will be a little less than last year. She said the Riverland Christmas Appeal helped people from Paringa to Loxton, Morgan, Blanchetown, Berri, Renmark and Bamera and surrounding areas. “It is the whole of the Riverland, she said. “We have an organisation in each town collecting. Mrs Taylor believed people had been so generous in part because they never knew if it might be them needing help in the future. “I suppose they could be in that situation themselves. On Sunday the Ulysses Club Toy and Tucker Run had 176 motorbikes take part and collected almost half of the total toys collected to date. “That was really great, she said. She also expected a lot of donations to be made this Friday night at the Renmark Christmas Pageant. “Instead of people paying an entry fee they are just donating toys and food of the value of their entry, she said. “The Christmas Appeal has been

Another person had donated a new bike suitable for a small child.

Donations of toys and food will be taken until Monday at the businesses listed on the advertisement opposite. “We will accept anything - the money goes towards food - or in last year’s case toys, when we didn’t have enough. Berri Primary School SRC was among the organisations to donate to the appeal this year - with a hamper bought from every class from money raised by student activities during the year.

A SENSE of achievement and increased self esteem has been the outcome of a sixweek course for a group of unemployed Riverlanders. Regional Development Australia indigenous economic development manager Julie Robertson said the culmination of the Passion for Fashion course would be a fashion parade at Renmark Club on Thursday, December 13 from 6.30pm. She said the aim of the course had been twofold - to get indigenous and non-indigenous young people working together and to increase the self esteem of those taking part. This week is the fifth of the course which has seen participants learn about many aspects of fashion - from hairdressing, to make-up and nail techiniques to, photo shoots, deportment, design, event planning and modelling. “A lot of these young people are disengaged from any type of learning or work

Congratulations on your achievements

so it is to try and encourage them to gain a pathway back in to something,” Ms Robertson said. “It is just the first step in getting them to re-engage in some thing. “The fashion is a career path they might not have thought of. “It is about teaching them to stand up and be proud - think ‘I am nervous but I am going to make it’. “The confidence they have developed in the six weeks so far has been amazing.” Among those to offer advice to course participants were a professional hat maker, who taught the girls how to design and make a hat of their own - suitable for wearing to the races. They have also benefitted from sessions with a life coach and at the end of the course they will each have a consultation with a professional at the Career Development Centre, who will work with them to set out a pathway

to achieve their desired career. “The person will talk to them about what components of the course they enjoyed.” Ms Robertson said participants came from Loxton, Bamera, Waikerie, Berri and Renmark. She encouraged anyone in the community to attend the grand finale fashion parade to enjoy seeing the fashions and to support those who had undertaken the course. Each of the nine girls will model three changes of clothes with others in the course helping them to create their looks throughout the course and on the night. ■ POISE: Participants in the Passion for Fashion course show of their newly found self confidence as they practice for the fashion parade that will be held at Renmark Club at the culmination of their course next week, from left, Rosie Carroll, Michelle Harding, Morgan Brook, Monika Drewett, Kelly Clements, Natasha Gowley and Shannen Ross.

Pretty Enough a crowd favourite. Chambers proclaimed The Captain, which she wrote at 17, her favourite amongst her song list and included it, When I Grow Up, and Barricades and Brickwalls on the night. Nicolson missed the previous concert planned for the pair in the Riverland, being sick and missing the entire South Australian leg of that tour. Not having heard him before I’ve become a fan and while having very different voices, the duo’s duets work well. They are a quality act - well supported by the three musos that made their music recent album with them. Plaudits also to their opening act Harry Hookey for his self written blues and superb guitar playing.

Spotlight business of the week

IF YOU are tired of the hot sun turning your once thriving grassed area into a haven for prickles worry no more. Waikerie based No Mow has the solution. Installing synthetic turf options, No Mow can give the front or backyard guaranteed greeness, rain, hail or shine. Not only does the grass have easy upkeep but it looks like the real thing. The business is the only South Australian distributors of this type of Australian-made turf. No Mow has a range of household turf products and can supply other surfaces throughout the Riverland and Mallee. No Mow’s John Sullivan said the synthetic grass products always looked great, were cost effective and were child and pet friendly. For those unsure of what size of synthetic lawn they want to install or how much it will cost, a free measure and quote, plus advice on lawn design, is also on offer. John said the turf would pay for itself in three years when one took into

consideration the cost of water, fuel for mowing and much more. With No Mow’s turf one get up to eight years UV warranty and a life expectancy of 20 years. John prides himself on the finished product from converting a weed covered, or dust bowl area, to lush looking, neatly trimmed, green turf. “Everyone who has had it laid is very happy with the decision, he said. As well as domestic installation, synthetic grass is also being more regularly used in com-

mercial applications, whether there is a problem using natural grass due to heavy traffic areas, water restraints, access, turf regeneration because of shade, or the cost of maintenance. No Mow can also install paving and do various other handyman jobs. No Mow travels across South Australia and interstate to provide customers with no stress lawn. It will also sell it with instructions for self insulation. Phone 8541 3887, 0412 839 775, email msu09470@ bigpond.net.au or visit www.nomow.com.au

Juniors urged to enter grand slam to gain selection ENTRIES are required urgently for the second round of the 2012/13 Riverland Junior Tennis Grand Slam to be held at Loxton on December 17 and 18. Tournament organiser Mike Horsman said Monday morning that the interest and enthusiasm of the players that entered this event would be taken into account when selecting teams for two interassociation matches that were approaching. “Dates have only just been confirmed for a meeting against a new opponent, Barossa Light and Gawler at Gawler on February 24 and a week later, for the annual clash with Sunraysia at Renmark on March 3, Horsman said. “We have really got a host of promising juniors coming through the grades at the moment and those youngsters that have an ambition in tennis should look at these tournaments against strong

associations as a pathway to the future. “These are the type of tournaments people like Luke Saville and Brooke Rischbieth used to challenge themselves in. “Those interested in representing the Riverland teams in 2012/13 they firstly should enter these local grand slam events so that selectors can have a look at them. Ring me on 0419030566 to enter. Eventually Monday’s discussion got around to the Riverland SAPSASA team that, although it only won one of its matches at this year’s annual carnival in Adelaide, proved extremely competitive against some strong opponents. The team was coached by Kristy Cahill and consisted of Abbey Wilson, Chloe Stewart, Haley Stewart, Kira Bannister, Lisa Redemski, Mikki Britten, William Koskinas, Jesse Wundenberg, Jordan Smith,

Adam Roy, Taylor Haslett and Riley Thompson. Apart from its win against Onkaparinga North most matches were closely contested and on the final day after firstly running into the eventual winner of division three, Port Adelaide, it met Murray Lands. That match involved six tiebreakers of which Riverland won only two to go down 10 sets to eight. “Looking at that team is an eye opener, Horsman said. “There really is some talent in our junior ranks. “It would be great to see kids like that in our grand slam tournaments. Meanwhile the Riverland Association is also anxious to hear from any junior or senior players available to play in the annual Country Carnival in Adelaide from January 5. Contact John Pick 0427 385 380 for further details.

Stormy weather challenges sailors SAILORS were challenged by stormy weather in Saturday’s first Pacer Challenges for 2012/2013 at the Lake Bonney Yacht Club but managed to complete the series of three races over short courses. In race one Steve and Kirsten Thomas finished ahead of Peter Dunk and Tim Ridley. The same pair won the next event from Mark Pfennig and Josh Ridley. Dunk and Tim Ridley then grabbed a win in the last race followed home by the Thomas boat. Before the club goes into recess for club sailing and sail training until January 12

there are some major events to be held. This Saturday the Handicap B race is on the program, while with the Mosquito boats involved in their class’ State heats at the Adelaide Sailing Club there will not be any sail training. Then on Saturday, December 15 the final sail training until after the break will be held followed by the annual Queen of the Lake Trophy race and the club’s Christmas Dinner that night. All members and friends are welcome with bookings to Dorothy Dunk, 8588 7186.

Bevan proves he’s handy wicket keeping FORMER Murray Districts’ cricket allrounder Andrew Bevan is best known for his pace bowling and aggressive batting but last Saturday playing for his home club in the Mid Murray competition,Waikerie Gold, he showed he is also pretty handy with the wicket keeping gloves. Bevan, who has coached the Ramco Football team in recent seasons, took five

catches and affected two stumpings as his side dismissed Blanchetown Swan Reach for 76 after setting a target of only 90. For a depleted Gold side captain Brad Gay scored 31 while BSR’s best bowlers were Troy Cowland, 6 for 25, and Matt Griffiths, 3 for 20. Nat Salter top scored for BSR with 25 while Waikerie Gold’s destroyers were sixteen year old Ricky Carter 4

for 14 and veteran Gavin Wilson, 3 for 21. In the other game Perponda with 73 from Rohan Zadow and 42 from Jason Ashenden totaled 187 and Morgan in reply could only manage 153 (Jeremy Jaeger 47, Ben Dreckow 42). The most successful bowlers in the game were Brad Wilksch, 4 for 38 for Morgan and Peter Leedham 3 for 31 for Perponda.

Straight shooting wins Kailan second national championship title

Ellee chooses netball

THE leading scores of 44 in a stableford event at the Waikerie Golf Club on Wednesday last week belonged to Sid Copeland and Mark Tink who also received a nearest the pin acknowledgement along the way. Then on Saturday in a stroke competition Terry Harris won division one with 86/71 and Chris Fridd division two with 92/71. Other leading scores came from Mike Wills 89/71, Philip Isaacson 84/72, Daniel Fechner 80/72 and Hans Van Der Meyden 86/72.

SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD Kailan Markham of Renmark recently won his second national sub junior title at the Australian Clay Target championships held in Warrnambool. Kailan previously won the championship in 2010 in Western Australia and last year finished third in Tasmania. Winning form is obviously good form and the promising junior won both the Annie Oakley and junior division turkey shoots when his home field and game club, Renmark-Berri, held its sporting clays Christmas event - its final shoot for 2012. The main competition, a handicap 50 target event went to Sheryl Beer with a score of 79 while the open turkey shoot was won by the club`s 2012 Champion of Champions Tony Trevorrow and the ladies' event by a new shooter Jenny Richards. At the Barmera Gun Club a full program of down the line events featured the annual Peter Caddy Memorial Shield 50 Target Double Barrel shoot with the overall and AA grade winner being Frank Albanese with a score of 50/50. Albanese also scored 35/35 to win the A grade of event two, a 25 Target Double Barrel shoot, so not surprisingly the 2012 Champion of Champions took out High Gun honours. Robert Maywald also had a good day winning the A grade of the Caddy Memorial Shield with 75/79 and the combining with Ray Wylie to grab a Deauville Doubles' competition. Robbie Robertson was really in the Christmas spirit winning both the Annie Oakley and turkey shoots. Also a competition at the Loxton Field and Game club last month saw two of the Riverland`s highest ranked shooters Kevin Nickolai and Rob Shawyer really entertain the gallery when they went head to head to smash clays on the tricky range. In the end though in the A grade 75 Target shoot Renmark`s Shawyer took the win with his score of 71/75, putting him narrowly ahead of his club mate Hayden Brown on 70/75, with Nickolai just behind third.

Grand finalists find some form

BERRI’S Ellee Eleftheriadis, 18, is not the first, and certainly will not be the last, outstanding young sports person to have to make a decision of this type. The 2011 Beaurepaires Peter Frankcom Junior Sports Star of the Year is moving to Adelaide next year to study at university and to pursue a future in sport. Ellee has been outstanding on both netball and basketball courts through her junior years. The daughter of sporting couple Terry and Chris Eleftheriadis, she has been given every opportunity to play as much sport as possible and has also tried tennis, T-ball, athletics, rugby, Australian football, soccer and swimming. The decision she has had to face now is one that could not only effect her career in sport going forward, but in this day and age her life style generally. A choice between netball and basketball was necessary as it is impossible to genuinely combine both. The case for both sports is impressive but she has opted for netball which she has played since the age of five for Berri Club reaching the A1 grade at 14. At school she reached State level with SAPSASA and was chosen in the SA under 15 girls team, only to miss playing in the tournament because of a broken leg. She has represented the Murray Academy at the Regional Carnival for five years and was chosen in a State Country Academy side. Last season she travelled twice weekly to Adelaide to train and play with the ETSA Contax intermediate grade number one team and was a member of the premiership side. In basketball, Ellee has played through the grades with Berri since she was eight and has represented Riverland teams for the past eight years, including in A grade at the Country Championships. Sidecars surprise MILDURA`S Byren Gates and Michael O`Loughlin were the surprise winners of the first round of the Ikon Suspension Sidecar Grand Slam held at the Riverland Speedway on Saturday night. Heavy rain at the venue the night before resulted in teams facing challenging conditions but despite the tricky surface some of the sport`s best competitors put on a memorable show for the big crowd in attendance. Gates and O`Loughlin were the talk of the night storming to victory as their 750cc engine enabled them to get maximum power to the ground compared to other riders, who were using 1045cc spec engines. Second to finish were talented duo Mark Plaisted (SA) and Sam Gilbert (NSW) followed by world champions Darrin Treloar (NSW) and Sam Cohrs (Victoria). The next round in the series will be held at Murray Bridge Speedway on Tuesday, January 1.

for the State at the Country Cup and at other major events. In the winter seasons of 2009 and 2010 she played with the Woodville Warriors. Ellee won the inaugural State Country Bert Barges Medal in 2011 as the most promising female junior player in country SA. She has also held high performance scholarships in 2010 and 2011 and late last year she toured the USA playing against university and schools teams. While the choice between the two sports was a difficult one, she has chosen netball. Already Ellee has been chosen in the Extended State League Program for Contax for the 2013 winter season and she has signed a one year contract with the club. This month she will also be trialing for the State under 19 squad. “I am now focused and committed to my netball and I hope that all of my involvement throughout the years will enable me to do well. I love playing basketball as well and will continue to play socially,” she said. If it comes down to grit and determination we can be certain that we will hear a lot more about Ellee Eleftheriadis the netballer. That broken leg suffered in a motor vehicle accident came shortly before she was due to travel to Queensland both within a month to represent SA teams in netball and basketball competitions. “That was a heart breaking experience missing those State commitments, but I was so determined to get back on to the courts as quickly as I could that when it came to rehab I did more than I was expected of me,” she said. “In the end it has made me a stronger person and I am extremely grateful to my rehab support coach Alan Coulter of the Renmark Recreation Centre and my family and friends who helped me to get through a tough time”. “Now it is off to Adelaide and I am sure that it will be a big eye opener for me as I have always had my parents close by supporting me and taking me everywhere”.

GRAND FINALIST Waikerie finally found some winning form in round nine of the Riverland Men’s Pennant division one bowls season to win its second game for 2012-13, 83-55 against Renmark RSL. The victory lifted Waikerie above Renmark RSL at the foot of the ladder and was a result of two big wins by rinks led by Andy Fulwood, 25-11 against Mirco De Col and Brian Burnett, 20-9 from John van der Wyst. At Berri the home side was again in devastating form in crushing Loxton RSL 100-57 while in a thrilling finish Lakeside, Barmera won three of the four rinks to beat second placed Loxton 79-76 and consolidate its third place on the table. This Saturday Barmera has the bye with Waikerie set to test its improved form against top ranked Berri, Renmark RSL to meet Loxton RSL and Loxton to host fourth placed Renmark in probably the match of the day.

Outstanding efforts give Berri big win

Lightning stops swimming meet SPECTACULAR lightning and thunderstorms halted the Waikerie versus Berri and Renmark versus Loxton pennant events last Friday. While a disappointing night for Riverland Swimming, this weekend will be a busy one. Waikerie will stage its Open Carnival on Saturday and on Sunday Loxton will host the second Riverland Points Carnival for the season. In last Friday’s Pennant swims the event at Waikerie was called off after only 15 of 96 programmed events were completed. At Renmark 73 events were completed before the storm made it too dangerous to proceed. Renmark’s hard work and the engaging of quality coaches saw it dominating the event at that stage.

AFTER Riverland towns have been involved in JT20 Cricket competitions internally they will come together in conjunction with the SA Cricket Association for a Lightning Carnival at the Berri No. 1 Oval this Sunday. This will be a round robin style competition starting at 9am and involving two teams each from Berri, Loxton and Renmark. Teams consist of six to eight players with the various sides to be chosen by SACA on the day. Each town coach needs to be advised of those attending. During the competition there will be prizes and random

giveaways. Three playing areas on the oval will guarantee non-stop involvement in the matches which are of six, six ball overs per side. All players bowl one over and players bat in pairs for two overs regardless of dismissals. And there is good value for ‘sixers’ in this game - they score eight runs. Points towards the winner of the carnival accumulate 30 for a win, 15 for a tie, one for every run scored and 10 points for maidens, ‘8’s’, wickets, catches and run outs. Each match lasts for about 45 minutes.

Loxton was a solid favourite at home in its match against Berri Blue but after it took an early lead the visitors came out firing in the third innings with good hitting from Alex Arnold and Garry Brinkworth to score seven runs and go on to be awarded the win 9-5 when bad light caused a halt to the night. In the early game at Glassey Park Renmark Blue won by a big margin against Lyrup 15-2 to consolidate its position on top of the ladder. The late game between Berri and Renmark is likely to be replayed at some point during the season. This Friday night Renmark Blue and Renmark White meet at Renmark and at Glassey Park Lyrup play Berri Blue followed by Berri Red against Loxton.

OUTSTANDING performances by Kris Taylor, Tam Benham and Tony Hayes took Berri to the top of the ladder when it defeated rival Cobdogla B surprisingly comfortably, 9-1, in last Saturday’s round of senior softball. In other matches Loxton B won a hard fought contest against Waikerie 9-7 and Lyrup accounted for Cobdogla A 9-2. With Loxton B and Cobby B having played last night there will be only one senior game at Glassey Park this Saturday, Loxton A, the reigning premier, after a bye last round, playing Berri. Looking at baseball last Friday night’s round did not go all that smoothly as the game at Loxton was shortened by poor light and the late match at Glassey Park was abandoned due to a thunderstorm.

Olympic rower stands out at State titles

Issue No. 258

Thursday, December 6, 2012

MURRAY Bridge rower James McRae did not let the crowd down at last weekend’s Berri Regatta putting on a standout display. A two-time Olympian at 25, he was amongst a record number of entries that saw 876 involved on Saturday and 675 on Sunday. It was also pleasing to see a number of members of local clubs Berri and Renmark taking part and producing competitive performances. These included Berri’s Sue Skinner who finished third in the Masters women’s single scull and then won silver when she teamed with Tanya Hoepner in a Berri/Riverside crew in a third grade double scull event. Berri captain Paul Othams won bronze for Masters men’s single scull and then finished fourth as cox of a third grade women’s coxed quad scull crew entered as Berri/Mannum and also including Sue Skinner. From the Renmark club Richard Challis finished fourth in Masters men’s single scull and Sue Bambrick, Sandi Williams, Heather McNaughton, Anne Auld with Ted James as cox were fourth in Masters women’ coxed four.
