CAR PARKING in the major Riverland towns seems to be an issue that is frequently raised. Berri is currently undergoing a traffic report by engineers which will provide an insight into any problems. I agree with many local business owners that there is not enough parking within walking distance to some shops. There are predictions around that given the Riverland is an attractive option for retirees, the population may steadily rise. If that is the case, the current car parking system in Berri will only experience further pressures. There is also minimal room for a car towing a caravan or a large sized camper van to stop in the Berri town centre. Let’s face it, many tourists would drive straight past Berri and onto Renmark if there are no areas to stop. That is where the town needs to be proactive and find ways to bring these tourists in. In both Loxton and Renmark, or any town across the region, tourists could easily drive past if they found it difficult to park. People will argue there are plenty of parking spots for cars in the region. Ultimately we need an attractive, tourist specific parking area in each town so they are guaranteed to stop and spend.

MURRAY Zircon’s Mindarie Mine is on target to recommence production within six months. The reopening is expected to create around 60 jobs on top of local electricians and turners who were recently employed to work on the site. A smaller attendance was on hand for another community meeting in East Murray on Tuesday night but Murray Zircon director Steve McEwen said the evening was productive. “We’re on target to put in

what we call the cover crops onto the rehabilitated land in April,” he said. “We’ve advised the community that we’ve commenced then recommissioning or refurbishment of our primary concentrated plant which is the major bit of plant we’ll be using. “There certainly is a lot more activity up there at the moment than there has been for a little while now and that will just float along as we move towards the recommencement.” Mr McEwen said transporting zircon from the region was an issue raised, with

some concern about trucking it out via the Karoonda to Wunkar road. “We did ask the department when we met with them whether or not it could be upgraded because it’s a state managed road and they indicated there are a lot of roads in the country in that condition and they would be getting to it when they could,” he said. Those in attendance also discussed the possibility of lodging an application to the Federal Government to source funding to boost telecommunications in the Alawoona to Karoonda blackspot area.

Dahlias bounce back at Winkie BY JUSTIN EVERS FIVE months since a freak storm tore apart his dahlia shadehouse, Winkie resident John Menzel has rebuilt his beloved structure. The storm, which hit last October, left only one post standing in Mr Menzel’s shelter. “We were running pretty close to the thin line and there is still little things to be done but it’s all up and running good now,” he said. Mr Menzel said he was really thankful for all the help he received during months of rebuilding. “We had a small group of people help us rebuild which was really good,” he said. Just three weeks after the storm, Mr Menzel was able to begin growing

dahlias in his shadehouse again. “The flowers are in a good condition,” he said.

“It is even good enough that eight daily growers from all around Australia want to come and have a look.”

MORE than 50 people attended the Riverland’s first ever paranormal information night in Renmark on Friday. In attendance were two members of Adelaide based The Paranormal Guide (TPG) and members of the Riverland Unexplained Paranormal Investigation team (RUPI). Founder of The Paranormal Guide Ashley Hall, who previously lived in the Riverland, said the response to the information session was pleasing. “I was actually quite surprised with the turnout itself because I use to live in Renmark prior to 2009 and a lot of the people I talked to then were kind of against this sort of thing,” he said. “I’ve found it quite encouraging that there seems to be a polarity shift in what people believe and what people feel comfortable talking about out there.” Following the information session, TPG and RUPI members investigated what is believed to be the Riverland’s original morgue in Renmark. TPG technician Paul Tipic said during the one hour long operation the group’s high tech equipment picked up words from what he said was believed to be a spirit of a little boy. Mr Hall said the group will return to the region. “When I lived in the Riverland I’d heard of quite a few haunted locations, so the morgue is obviously just the tip of the iceberg,” he said.
