Mural Artist Spotlight: ARTISTS BIO

happen stance is a crew of artists, illustrators, writers, and comic-loving nerds that work and play on the unceded ancestral lands of the xʷməθkʷəyəm (Musqueam), Sḵwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, colonially known as Vancouver.

Formed in 2023, happen stance has grown to nine artists whose work includes murals, UX, comics, printmaking, art books, illustration, painting, and design. Tied together by a collective interest in independent artistic expression, themes forming a through-line in each member's work include identity and culture, mental health, self-reflection, environmentalism, and storytelling

Our mural illustrates the act of being in constant community, nurtured by dreams of gentle coexistence with oneself, nature, and each other.

MURAL STATEMENT

Dreaming of Coexistence, by artists Ann Fu, Allison Chow, Heather Tsang, and Ris Wong, is a playful interpretation of VMF’s 2024 theme “Familiar Faces”. Our mural illustrates the act of being in constant community, nurtured by dreams of gentle coexistence with oneself, nature, and each other.

This collaboration features four parts: Allison Chow’s dark-haired Soma at the base of the mural is the fierce nocturnal symbol of self, the steward of dreams and wisdom Heather Tsang’s white rabbit represents familiar roles in our lives: the trickster, the sibling, the parent, and the friend. Completing the embrace is Ann Fu’s bold orange bird, bringing her wild spirit and playful awareness. And finally, surrounding everyone is the great forest, full of wonderful and familiar creatures by Ris Wong.

Love for River District

Strangers stopping to chat, sharing their experiences, what they made of art in public spaces and the small joys of their daily walks. It was a reminder that our work was seen, that the labour we put in mattered to someone Their curiosity and kindness made an impact on us, just as we hoped to make on them Oh, and of course the endless parade of designer dogs

I enjoy living in the River District because of its proximity to beautiful trails and the river. The area offers a peaceful environment and plenty of opportunities to connect with nature, making it easy to enjoy outdoor activities and appreciate the scenic views just steps from my door

- Brittany , Vancouver Pet Food Pantry

We love that River District seamlessly blends modern living with the beauty of nature, nestled right along the Fraser River and surrounded by lush green spaces - an ideal setting for both dogs and their humans. Thank you to Bosley’s at River District for carrying our treats, ensuring every dog can enjoy something special!

- Daniel , Foley Dog Treat Company

River District is more than just a neighbourhood it’s a place of belonging It’s where families grow, friendships form, and the sense of community runs deep. Just like Northern Cafe, it’s about warmth, connection, and the feeling that you’re always welcome. It’s a reminder that the best places aren’t just where we live, but where we truly feel at home.

- Richard , Northern Cafe

It’s a great privilege to be on the team that gets to bring quality dental care to the flourishing RD community. At River District Dentistry, I take joy in connecting with individuals from all walks of life. Whether they live or work just steps away or trek a greater distance just to come see us, I am humbled and grateful for their trust in our care

- Anthony , River District Dentistry

River District strikes the perfect balance between urban convenience and natural beauty. Peaceful walking trails, scenic waterfront views, and pet-friendly spaces make it an ideal place for Ruby and me to explore together. But what truly makes River District feel like home are the people. The friendly neighbours, the genuine sense of connection, and the way everyone looks out for one another, create a warm and inviting atmosphere Whether it’s local events, small businesses that greet you by name, or simply a kind smile from a passerby, the people here make River District not just a place to live but a place to belong.

Gemma , Proud Pawrent of Ruby

Since moving to River District in December 2023, I’ve really come to love this growing community along the Fraser River. It has everything great walking trails, parks, and a vibrant Town Centre with grocery stores, restaurants, and the local food trucks There’s even a playground and plenty of green spaces for kids to play It’s perfect for young families, professionals, and retirees looking to downsize But what really makes it special is the friendly neighbours and strong sense of community. Plus, Bella, our 7-year-old Cavapoo, loves how dog-friendly the area is, which makes our walks even better!

- Johnny , Mortgage Broker

I love the intersection between nature and “city living”-lite I really appreciate the accessibility to nature spaces for individuals, families with young children, anyone experiencing movement limitations (hiking isn’t for everyone) and the feeling of community in the area. The newly added eateries, services, public outdoor spaces (especially with biophilic design in mind). It’s beyond cute, it’s perfect.

- Nicole , Forest Bathing

GARDENWORKS loves River District's dedication to sustainability and community integration! The focus on green spaces, support for local businesses, and commitment to environmental stewardship make us the perfect pair River District embodies a vibrant and environmentally aware community that deeply connects with GARDENWORKS, and being just minutes away, we look forward to growing together through the seasons!

Vancouver Pet Food Pantry

Providing Essential Resources for Pets and Their Families

WRITTEN BY BRITTANY KELSALL

PHOTOS BY @WRINKLYWEDNESDAY

After aging out of foster care, I found myself trying to navigate life without the safety net many others have Having my rescue dog Jaxson by my side made the struggle more bearable, but it also highlighted the real issue: as a pet owner, there were no easily accessible resources for food, vet care, or pet supplies. I was in school to become a social worker and ended up quitting school to start my own dog care business, I ended up getting involved in rescue work, which gave me the opportunity to meet so many others in similar situations. It became apparent that there was a critical need for donated pet food and gear to support families who loved their animals but couldn’t always afford to keep them fed and cared for.

So, three years ago, I took action. I founded the Vancouver Pet Food Pantry, a community-based initiative with the simple yet powerful goal of ensuring that families could access donated food, supplies, and gear to help take care of their pets. What began as a small project has grown significantly, and now, we’re proud to have four pantry locations across Vancouver. Each of these pantries is stocked with pet food, toys, and other essential supplies items that can make a world of difference for a pet owner who’s struggling.

Our new pantry right here in the River District is another step in expanding our reach, making sure even more people have access to the resources they need. Whether it’s a family facing temporary financial hardships or a pet owner who’s having a tough time finding affordable food, the pantry is here to help. It’s a no-questions-asked, confidential service, designed to be easy to access and use. Anyone who needs it is welcome to come by and take what they need, no matter the circumstances.

If you’d like to help, there are many ways you can contribute. Donating pet food, gently used pet gear, or ordering off our Amazon Wishlist helps ensure we can keep our pantries stocked. Volunteers are always welcome to assist with sorting and distributing donations, and of course, spreading the word about the pantry is incredibly helpful in reaching those who may need it most.

The Vancouver Pet Food Pantry is more than just a place to pick up food—it's a reflection of our community’s kindness, compassion, and willingness to help those in need.

The Vancouver Pet Food Pantry is more than just a place to pick up food it's a reflection of our community’s kindness, compassion, and willingness to help those in need. It’s about making sure that pets like my boy Jaxson continue to be a source of joy, comfort, and companionship, even in difficult times. We believe that no pet should go hungry, and no pet owner should have to choose between feeding their pet and feeding themselves.

By working together, we can ensure that every pet and every family gets the support they deserve.

River District Dentistry (RDD) has been a staple of the River District community since opening in May 2019 Since then, their team and facility have grown to be able to service the oral health needs of this rapidly growing community! With a focus on fresh, current care, RDD has operated on the core values of TREViii: Teamwork, Respect, Excellence, Volunteerism, and Initiate/Investigate/Implement.

"When we first welcomed patients 6 years ago, we had a small team of four people, and now we're at 25! I'm really proud to say that the majority of our highcharacter people have been hired either after completing their school practicums with us, or through word-of-mouth referrals from other dental professionals Yes, our clinic looks great and has a ton of high-tech equipment, but what I’m most proud of is the group of people that actually deliver the care, service, and laughter on a daily basis” says Dr Scott Kollen

Two more dentists have joined RDD in the last few years: Dr Anthony Pang and Dr Kathryn O’Donnell Having grown up working summer jobs in South Boundary, taking driving lessons along Marine Way, and catching many a sunrise from the banks of the Fraser River, Dr. Pang regards the River District neighbourhood with immense affection. “It’s a great privilege to be on the team that gets to bring quality dental care to the flourishing RD community. At RDD, I take joy in connecting with individuals from all walks of life. Whether they live or work just steps away or trek a greater distance just to come see us, I am humbled and grateful for their trust in our care.”

“It’s a great privilege to be on the team that gets to bring quality dental care to the flourishing RD community.”
Dr.KathrynO’Donnell
“I absolutely love working at RDD! The patients and team here make every day enjoyable.”

Dr O’Donnell grew up in Nova Scotia and made the move across the country to Vancouver after finishing dental school to complete a General Practice Residency at UBC She quickly fell in love with the west coast and all it has to offer After finishing residency, Dr O’Donnell joined the team at RDD and hasn’t looked back. “I absolutely love working at RDD! The patients and team here make every day enjoyable. It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of such a supportive environment where I can continue to grow as a dentist and provide exceptional care to my patients.”

RDD provides a full suite of general dental procedures for adults and children, and they also offer additional services like clear aligner orthodontics (Suresmile), and cosmetic procedures like whitening, BioClear, and both composite and ceramic veneers. “A lot of cases we see just need some clear aligner orthodontics to get teeth in the correct spot to fix the bite, then a few 3D printed resin veneers or composite bonding to restore any worn-down teeth to make them look better This can be achieved at a much lower pricepoint (and less drilling) compared to a full mouth of 28 ceramic crowns or veneers ” says Dr Kollen

If you or your loved ones are in need of a dental appointment, you can easily book your first visit online, just as you would at a restaurant through OpenTable. You can head over to RDD’s website at www.riverdistrictdentistry.com and click “Book Appointment” or just scan the QR code!

Pollinators are the unsung heroes of our gardens. Fr honeybees and native bees to butterfl hummingbirds, and even certain beetles, these visitors play a crucial role in keeping our ecosyste healthy and productive. In South Coastal BC, w lucky to enjoy a mild climate that allows for extended growing season and a wonde opportunity to create a pollinator-friendly oasis righ your backyard or on your balcony.

At GARDENWORKS, we believe that beautiful gard can also support biodiversity Here are our top tips for attracting and sustaining pollinators:

1.ChooseaVarietyofNativeandPollinator-Friendly Plants

Pollinators thrive when there’s a continuous source of nectar and pollen from early spring to late fall. Native plants such as salal, red-flowering currant, yarrow, and Nootka Rose are excellent choices because local pollinators are already adapted to them. But don’t shy away from favourites like lavender, echinacea, bee balm, and cosmos all of which are magnets for bees and butterflies.

uttheSeasons

Stagger your plantings to ensure there’s always something in bloom Early bloomers like crocus and hellebore are vital for emerging bees, while late-season flowers like sedum and goldenrod provide a final feast before winter.

Tip: Aim for a mix of flower shapes, sizes, and colours. Bees love blues and purples, while hummingbirds are drawn to reds and tubular blossoms.

3.AvoidPesticides

One of the best ways to protect pollinators is to keep your garden chemical-free. Even “bee-friendly” pesticides can be harmful. Try organic pest control methods or embrace a little imperfection in your plants your pollinator visitors will thank you.

4.CreateHabitatandShelter

Pollinators need more than just flowers Native bees often nest in bare soil, hollow stems, or wood piles Consider adding a bee hotel or leaving a small brush pile in a quiet corner Hummingbirds love small trees and shrubs for nesting and perching

5.ProvideWater

A shallow dish with pebbles and fresh water can be a lifeline for pollinators during dry summer months. Change the water regularly to prevent mosquito breeding.

Add a “BeeBath”to your garden!

6.NoGarden?NoProblem Balcony-Friendly PlantsforPollinators

Even if you’re gardening on a balcony, you can still support pollinators! Many flowering plants do beautifully in containers and hanging baskets. Try planting:

English Lavender: Fragrant, hardy and a bee favourite

Salvia: Vibrant purple spikes that attract hummingbirds and bees

Alyssum: Small, sweet-smelling flowers ideal for containers

Nasturtiums: Bright, edible blooms that pollinators love

Zinnias: Easy to grow, colourful, and butterflyfriendly

Herbs like thyme, oregano, & chives: Let them flower and enjoy the pollinator show!

Fuchsia: Beautiful pop of colour for a shaded area – a hummingbird favourite

TIP: Group containers together to create a more enticing landing zone and remember to keep them wellwatered during the heat of summer.

7.GoOrganicandThinkLocal

Support pollinators by using organic soil and compost, and by sourcing plants from local nurseries like GARDENWORKS All of our annuals and perennials are grown right here in BC, meaning they’re well-suited for our climate and wildlife

Creating a pollinator-friendly garden isn’t just beneficial it’s beautiful, dynamic, and deeply rewarding

Whether you’re working with a balcony container or a sprawling backyard, every effort helps support local biodiversity.

Forest Bathing

Findingpeace,nature&health intheRiverDistrict

WRITTEN BY NICOLE YAMANAKA

PHOTOS BY NICOLE YAMANAKA & JENN SHANK

Go for a stroll along the river’s edge this spring and you’re in for a lovely walk Lined with trees, flowers and grassy parks, there’s no denying that you’re in the perfect spot for a little forest bathing, or shinrin yoku

But FOREST bathing? At the River District?

Actually, forest bathing (also known as forest therapy) is interchangeable with nature therapy, so let’s start at the roots

What is Forest Bathing?

Originating in Japan in the 1980s, the term shinrin yoku (which translates loosely to forest bathing) was created as a government intervention, in response to high rates of stress, heart attacks and strokes from overworking during the tech boom.

The goal was to improve health measures such as lowered blood pressure and reduced stress through helping participants get in touch with their presentmoment experience and guide focus off activities such as anticipating, worrying, and envisioning doom scenarios. The mindfulness of observing what one smells, sees and hears in nature settings without intention (simply noticing and sensing the natural world without judgement or evaluation) tied in well with Japan’s culture of Shintoism.

Research shows that forest bathing has benefits such as:

Stress management

Mood boosting properties

Improve cognitive function

Improve immune function

Reduce blood pressure

Improve sleep

How to do it:

The goal was to improve health measures such as lowered blood pressure, and reduced stress through helping participants get in touch with their present-moment experience and guide focus off activities such as anticipating, worrying, and envisioning doom scenarios.

Step 1: Find a peaceful spot, it’s okay if there are the occasional sounds of people, they’re nature too. I recommend places where music isn’t played too loudly or a birthday picnic is causing a ruckus.

Step 2: Get settled in, soften your gaze, begin noticing your senses from head to toe - what are you hearing? Are there smells on the breeze? What textures are within reach of your fingertips?

Step 3: After 10-15 minutes, slowly wander to a new spot while noticing the tiniest details along the way. Maybe it’s a minuscule ladybug, spring buds swaying the in the breeze, or hummingbirds flitting from branch to branch. Give yourself 10-15 minutes to practice moving very slowly and noticing what you notice.

Step 4: Settle into a new spot, this time keeping your eyes open. What different colours or shades of nature do you notice? (Fun fact - people apparently relax best while seeing greens and blues).

Feel free to repeat step 4, depending on how much time you have, focusing on a different sense such as temperature, far away sounds, light and shadow etc. When you feel ready to complete your forest bathing experience, end with a light snack or drink, take a moment to reflect and take your newfound calm with you back to the normal world. The river, trees, birds and plants will be waiting for your next visit!

Tips:

Dress for the weather, layers is best. Forest therapy in rainy weather can be surprisingly delightful. Bring something comfy (and dry) to sit on. Be aware of your surroundings. If you’re on the beach, is the tide coming in? Are there dogs? Did their humans pick up after them? Safety first! Relax and enjoy!

Foley Dog Treat Company began its journey in 2009 as a home-based business in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. Our mission was simple: create healthy, delicious treats for dogs using real, high-quality ingredients with no fillers or preservatives It turns out many dog owners were looking for healthier options for their beloved pups as well and demand for our baked treats grew rapidly

With the support of retailers, distributors, our loyal customers, and of course, their wonderful dogs, our business grew into its own facility with distribution now stretching across Canada You may recognize some of the brands we produce, including: VitalityDog, FoleyBites, Functional Fungi, WholeDog, Farmhouse, and our newest line, Wild Pacific Sea Snacks. Our treats can be found across Canada at independent pet stores, PetSmart, Bosley’s, PetValu, Global Pet Foods, PetLand, Bone & Biscuit, WholeFoods, London Drugs, and many more While our ‘kitchen’ has grown over the years, our commitment to quality, wellbeing, and deliciousness

We believe that healthy dogs start with healthy food Our mission is to nourish the whole dog - mind, body, and soul - by creating treats that support your pup’s overall health and wellness. We know that “Foley Dogs” are more than just pets - they are a member of the family That’s why we ensure our treats are made with human-grade, locally sourced, safe, delicious, and healthy ingredients that are baked, packaged, and shipped from Vancouver Island.

From real whole meat proteins (not meat meals) from Alberta, to fresh fruits and vegetables from BC and Saskatchewan, we choose ingredients that are wholesome, nutritious, and free from artificial additives, preservatives, grains, or fillers.

By keeping everything local, we reduce our environmental footprint while simultaneously supporting the local economy

The difference in our dog treats is the way we bake them… amongst other things!

Unlike most pet food made through extrusion, our treats are carefully cut and slowly baked at low temperatures in our CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) and SQF (Safe Quality Food) Certified facility This gentle baking method helps retain the natural flavours and essential nutrients of our ingredients, preserving the integrity of the proteins and vitamins that helps your dog stay healthy.

We are committed to connecting people, pets, and the planet through our products, packaging, and production processes. We actively support the BC SPCA (donated over 2,000 lbs of dog treats with your help!), local rescue groups such as Bully Buddies Rescue Society and HugABull, and various other organizations through donations. We are also the official treat sponsor of both the Good Dog Library in the Vancouver HastingsSunrise area and Dundarave Dog Library in West Vancouver.

t in touch: Thank you s River District f Bosley’

We’re equally passionate about protecting the planet Our sustainably circular approach of using bags that are recyclable allows us to minimize our impact. ding on where you live, you can put our bags y in your municipal blue bin or drop them off at -store soft plastics recycling program These ed pouches are chipped into pellets to create postmer plastic materials and the cycle continuesy closing the loop.

Gummy

Our journey began with Gummy, our sassy little Pomeranian, who traveled from the Philippines as we started a new chapter in Canada Now four years old, Gummy isn’t just our first pup she’s the queen of our home, a true fashionista with a flair for style and an unexpectedly sharp mind Believe it or not, she can solve simple math problems (addition is her favorite!), and Foley Dog Treats are her preferred reward for every correct answer.

Not long after settling in, Gummy became a proud mom to two beautiful boys: Chewy and Emerson. Chewy is a burst of energy and curiosity, always ready to explore, while Emerson is the calm and cuddly heart of our pack.

Foley Dog Treats have become a daily staple in our lives not just for training, but for bonding, celebrating, and showing love. For our talented, stylish little family, they’re more than treats they’re moments of joy

re Foley Dog Treat Ambassadors! Hello! We’

Mia is a 1 5-year-old Maltipoo with boundless energy and an even bigger personality Whether she’s zooming around the house, playing tug-of-war, or eagerly greeting everyone she meets, Mia brings joy and excitement wherever she goes She’s always up for an adventure especially if it involves treats! Her absolute favourite? Foley Dog Treats. The moment she hears the bag crinkle, she’s at full attention, ready to perform all her best tricks for a tasty reward. When she’s not busy being the life of the party, Mia loves snuggling up for belly rubs and basking in the attention of her favourite humans. Equal parts playful and affectionate, she has a way of making every day a little brighter.

Christine and Mia

Lucy is a spunky 6 year old spaniel-mix who is also quite the athlete! She trains in agility, canicross, and bikejoring It is one of my greatest joys to train with her and she never fails to make me laugh with her antics. Her willingness to work with me is one of the things I love about her so much. It doesn’t really matter what we’re doing, she’s in as long as we’re doing it together.

Fergus, or Fergie for short, is a 1.5 year old Border Collie. I had always dreamed of owning a Border Collie since I was a kid and Fergie made all those dreams a reality. He is sweet, smart, and loves to work. He is currently training in all the same things as Lucy, but agility is really where he excels. He is a certified good boy and throws his whole heart into everything we do together

With all these sports and activity, we spend a lot of time training! One of the keys to a successful training session is having the right motivation, and for my two, that’s Foley Dog Treats They’ll do just about anything short of backflips for them (but I bet they could do that too with a little training)

Lucy & Fergus

Hi, my name is Alexa Winkler my dog Freya is an ambassador for Foley Dog Treats, she LOVES them so much! Freya is a service dog in training for me, Freya loves Foley so much because not only are the ingredients human grade which I love they are also made in Canada which I look for in treats I love that it is high in protein, fiber, vitamins & minerals. Also, that there is no gluten, grain, corn or soy I won’t buy if treats have that. I love that they are healthy for my Freya she’s my everything, so I watch what she eats. Foley Dog Treats have no added salt, fat, sugar or preservatives. They are hypoallergenic and easy to digest. Freya loves the cool flavours of treats like turkey with cranberries. She loves that it has a good crunch to it. What we love to do together is going on hikes and doing dog training.

Meet our Feature Pet

Oh, hi! Welcome to my spotlight! My name is Ruby, and I’m a two-year-old West Highland White Terrier with a big personality and an even bigger heart. I was born just outside of Winnipeg but decided to jump ship and adopt an owner who lived in beautiful British Columbia. At six months old, I moved to Vancouver, and from that moment on, I knew I was finally home

I may be small, weighing in at just under 16 pounds, but I have a big spirit! I love exploring, whether it’s hunting squirrels, digging at the beach, or trotting through the River District’s walking trails I like to think I rule my neighbourhood, greeting everyone with my confident strut and perky ears My human says I have a stubborn streak, but I just know what I want especially when it comes to the direction of our walks and, of course, if there are snacks! I’ve learned lots of tricks, but let’s be honest, I usually only do them when treats are involved. My favourite are the treats I get from the lovely girls at Everything Wine.

Living in the River District is a dream come true for a pup like me! There are so many pet-friendly spaces to explore, and I always get lots of smiles and pets from the friendly neighbours Whether it’s walking along the river with my bestie, Fletcher, or stopping by my favorite local spots like Bosley’s to say hi to Beans, I always feel like a little celebrity around here!

I have certainly had an interesting start to my life, but now I know I’m exactly where I’m meant to be. My human may have rescued me, but if you ask me, I think I rescued them too. After all, what would they do without me? And lucky for me, my human loves this place just as much as I do and felt the need to share MY spotlight to add in her bit!

River District has a special charm that makes it one of my favourite places to be. Since 2018, back when things were different and the only store around was Everything Wine, I have proudly called River District home Watching the area grow while still preserving its strong sense of community has been incredible
