ver wondered what the bottom of the Harlem River looks like? It’s not full of ﬁsh or tires or sunken boats, but Marble Hill born and raised artist Abigail DeVille’s installation, “Harlem River Blues,” depicts it being piled high with Johnny Mathis and Stevie Wonder records. Ms. DeVille’s grandmother, who died last year after living in Marble Hill for 40 years, was the inspiration for the work, on display through January as part of the Lehman College Art Gallery’s Space Invaders exhibit. The installation is crammed into a small video room at the Lehman gallery and includes the artist’s late grandmother’s belongings and furniture, including dozens of her records. The records, which are scattered on the ﬂoor and walls near a picture of her grandmother, can be read as messages. Johnny Mathis’ “Good Night, Dear Lord.” is near an old Chess record of Moms Mably’s “The Funniest Woman in the World.” Kenny Rogers’ single “She Believes in Me” is near Steve Wonder’s “You are the Sunshine of My Life.” The installation is dark and mysterious — a television perpetually broadcasts fuzz in the background — and it mimics an underwater feeling of grief. “She wants you to feel like you’re underwater,” the art gallery’s director Susan Hoeltzel said. But it also brings the viewer into a Marble Hill apartment with roaches and old furniture. Ms. DeVille is one of 18 artists that invaded Lehman College for Space Invaders, curated by Karin Bravin. For this show, which runs through Wednesday, Jan. 9, the college itself became a canvas. While most of the installations are within

the Lehman Art Gallery’s walls, some spill out onto grounds. At the gallery’s entrance is Rachel Hayes’ brightly colored fabric piece, which moves with the weather. Last week, with a little help from the sun, her piece transformed the gallery’s lobby into a church. ³You walk in here and it’s like stained glass windows,” Ms. Hoeltzel said. In the gallery’s entrance, vinyl decals of small green weeds, created by Kim Beck, look as if they’re growing out of the wall. Outside, DeWitt Godfrey wedged 15 massive steel tubes beneath an underpass on Lehman’s campus. Students can sit on the giant rusted steel ovals or walk through them. Dahila Elsayed installed a series of yellow and orange flags around the schoool’s community garden. The work was not only constructed for the spot, but was inspired by Lehman’s peculiar mascot, the lightning bug. The insects use a call and response, flash and counterflash, to communicate. The flags are emblazoned with words such as “Subtle Signals,” “Loud + Clear,” “Forward Urges,” “Glowing” and “Some Sparks.” After the 18 artists were selected for the installation, Ms. Hoeltzel said they walked around the campus to claim territory. The weren’t any battles over space, but Ms. Hoetzel said, “We had to work with the college on what was possible.” Manhattan artist Diana Cooper chose a corner space in one of the exhibition rooms. “It’s a funky kind of space,” Ms. Cooper said last week, while standing in front of her installation. Instead of ignoring the more utilitarian aspects of the room, including an exit sign and air conditioning vents, she used them in her piece. She took photos of the exit signs and vents, printed them out and placed them nearby. It’s hard to tell what’s real. “I like the fact that you might mistake one for the other,” she said. “Photography’s capacity of fooling you is becoming more and more advanced.” Though the gallery is open, her installation is still a work in progress. She stopped by last week to tweak it.

Simple tips for completing a DIY home project on time We are in the midst of a do-it-yourself revolution, with more Americans pulling out the tool belt and getting their hands dirty. If you’d like to hop on the DIY bandwagon and enjoy the money savings and pride that comes with completing a project yourself, it’s important to keep some tips in mind so your grand ideas don’t become grand disasters. to a 2012 Bank of America Merrill Edge Report. No matter what your reason, from saving money to having complete control over the project, here are some important steps to follow so the job gets completed successfully.

Fall for fruit: pomegranate, bulghur and mint salad By Danielle Rehfeld drehfield@riverdalepress.com Bulghur wheat is usually associated with tabouli. A Middle Eastern staple, tabouli is a common salad consisting of fresh herbs, cooked bulghur, lemon juice and olive oil. The first time I tried it, it was a soggy mess. What was this grain melange of watery cucumbers and pulverized tomatoes sitting in a sad cold liquid of vegetable juices? You can see it now in your grocery aisle next to the hummus and babaganoush. It was only later in life, in a small Druze town on Israel’s Mount Carmel, that tabouli changed its position in my culinary mental rolodex. We visited an unassuming small restaurant, one that looked like all the others along the village’s main artery. It was virtually empty but the cook and ba’al ha bayit(master of the house) knew our family friend and ushered us in. They brought out countless plates of mezze, one of which was tabouli — real tabouli. The salad was mostly bright green, whole leaves with only a small amount of bulghur folded in. Each bite was pure earth; grassy parsley, peppery cilantro and just tender little grains of bulghur. It was then that I learned to appreciate this underused grain. This September, I learned a new way to make it with cracked wheat. My aunt Amira graced our Rosh Hashanah table with seven kinds of salad and 10 main courses. My favorites ranged from a salad of julienned raw carrots and beets to Bamia, or baby okra, stewed with buttery soft pieces of beef shoulder. The other highlight was this healthy salad of bulghur, pomegranate seeds, torn mint and walnuts. Tossed with just a little bit of olive oil, lemon, salt and pepper, this salad’s bright colors and crunchy texture make it a veritable feast for the eyes and senses. AMIRA’S POMEGRANATE, BULGHUR AND MINT SALAD* Serves 4. The star ingredient in this recipe are the crunchy, tart pomegranate seeds. To seed a pomegranate, cut it in half, put on a makeshift bib and place a bowl in your sink. Using a mallet, knock the outside of the pomegranate over the bowl and watch the seeds fall. This method is a lot easier than trying to pry them out with your fingers, but the juices stain so beware. 2 Cups bulghur wheat, cooked 1-1/2 Cups pomegranate seeds 1/2 Cup mint leaves, loosely packed, and torn into small pieces 1 lemon freshly squeezed 3 Tbsps. good quality olive oil kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste THE RETIRED & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of the Community Service Society is recruiting volunteers age 55 and over to assist in working with 3- and 4-year-old children in Head Start Centers, helping them to develop a love for learning. 1/2 Cup walnuts, toasted and coarsely chopped Cook the bulghur wheat according to package directions. In a colander, rinse the bulghur under cold water. Strain well, making sure to remove any excess water or starchy residue. In a large, non-reactive bowl, combine 2 cups cooked bulghur and pomegranate seeds. Tear the mint into small pieces over

the bowl. Add the lemon juice, olive oil and season to taste with salt and pepper. Toss gently to combine. Taste for seasoning and adjust. Fold in the walnuts and transfer to a serving dish. Garnish with a small sprig of mint. *Cook’s Note: This salad can be made up to one day ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator.

Working from a script which blends gallows humor and Mayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s innovative sketch comedy work with Mike Nichols and a surprising vision of romantic love, May assembled a dream cast for her ďŹ rst feature ďŹ lm. After a frustrating series of failed dates, he ďŹ nally stumbles upon the perfect mate, Henrietta Lowell (May). Robot buddy offers new lease on life +++++ Frank Langella, a powerhouse actor on stage, has rarely been given the opportunity to play a sympathetic lead in the movies. But in Robot & Frank he displays his polished comedic and dramatic skills to great effect in a winning, touching, slightly futuristic comedy/ drama. Working with ďŹ rst-time director Jake Schreier, Langella portrays Frank, an elderly former cat burglar whose spirit is intact after serving two terms in prison. Frank seems content to live out his life in a remote upstate New York cottage, although his mental faculties are gradually diminishing and his homemaking skills are less than stellar. But his son, played with a nuanced mix of devotion and alienation by James Marsden (Enchanted, Straw Dogs), is unwilling to relegate the old jewel thief to a life of senility in the old age home without making an effort to bring him back from the precipice of dementia. To this end, the son gives his dad a robot home health care aide. A compact, humanoid-shaped machine, the robot is the shut-inâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dream. It cooks healthy meals, cleans the house, shops for food and household supplies, creates and tends its own garden, can carry on a decent conversation, and generally takes care of its charge with all the consideration and patience of the best possible human nurse/ companion/housekeeper/cook and bottle washer. The old burglar is appalled at ďŹ rst, and refuses to be a cooperative patient. But once he ďŹ nds that the robot has not been programmed to be an enforcer of civil laws, a compromise is struck between man and machine which serves both of their purposes. Frank will behave cordially, eat his no-salt, low fat, vegetarian meals, and sleep and awaken on the robotâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s programmed schedule, while the robot will learn the cat burglarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trade. The friendship which devel-

ops between Langella and the robot, voiced with a sweet metallic charm by Peter Saarsgard (Kinsey, An Education) grows into what must be the ďŹ rst meaningful relationship the old thief has had since the early years of his marriage. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s apparent that over the course of his life he alienated his ex-wife and children and was never an essential part of their lives. Finding a friend so late in life revitalizes Frank and makes him more of a human being. Instead of the irritable recluse plagued by dementia and ill-will, he begins to build relationships with the local librarian, played by Susan Sarandon, and his daughter, played by Liv Tyler. Through all of this, Langellaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s scenes with the robot are funny, quirky, warm and demanding, as a suspension of disbelief must be maintained while building a real relationship between man and machine. And working with Marsden, Sarandon and Tyler presents a different set of challenges. Langella is convincing as a character who may be able to relate to a robot but who ďŹ nds enormous difďŹ culty in overcoming a lifetime of selďŹ sh behavior towards ďŹ&#x201A;esh and blood characters. In all of this, the script by Christopher D. Ford succeeds at ďŹ nding a balance between the whimsical relationship between Frank and his robot, the challenges of Frankâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s downwardly spiraling mental acuity, and the old guyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s late in life attempts to overcome the emotional alienation from his family. Fordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s screenplay doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always succeed at incorporating the intersecting plotlines. But his work must be applauded, as ďŹ rst-time screenwriters rarely ďŹ nd such success with such a complex story and characters. And director Schreier must be congratulated as well for working with his actors to create one of this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most touching and insightful ensemble pieces. It will challenge you, amuse you and give you a ďŹ ne night out at the movies. This is in large part due to Mayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s extraordinary writing abilities, as demonstrated in such other work as Warren Beattyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Heaven Can Wait, Mike Nicholsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; The Bird Cage and Primary Colors, and for her own scripts for the underappreciated Ishtar and Mikey and Nicky (starring John Cassavetes and Peter Falk.)
