‘BrONx:AfrICA,’ by Nicky Enright, part of the eponymous exhibition at Hosto Community College’s Longwood Gallery beginning next month.

Show explores borough’s ties to Africa By Will Speros wsperos@riverdalepress.com

W

hat does it mean to be African in the Bronx? How are influences from the continent evident in the borough and its people? How does one make sense of his or her own identity against a backdrop of many? These are among the questions posed by 25 artists in the upcoming exhibition “Bronx:Africa,” which will be unveiled at Hostos Community College’s Longwood Gallery on Wednesday, Feb. 3. Curator LeRonn P. Brooks, an instructor at Lehman College and curator with the Bronx Council on the Arts, said the show was formed around the question of how to give language to the Bronx’s African communities. “What does it mean that many people from the continent are in the Bronx? How do we actually recognize the diversity of what the Bronx is and recognize the voices and influences?” he mused. “Really, it is an exploration of influences of African cultures in the Bronx, the idea of individuality within larger communities.” While not every artist featured in the exhibit is African or a resident of the Bronx, the multimedia show will cast a spotlight on the African spirit within the borough and how the vast identity of the continent is translated. “I think New York is a city of neighborhoods,” Mr. Brooks explained. “There’s so many new voices in this show. It’s an introduction to the transformation of New York, the way New York is becoming the most diverse city in the world.” Photographer Dennis Redmoon Darkeem identifies as both African American and Native American. He said trying to understand identity in regard to place is a key component of the portraits he has featured in the show. “Through my work, I like to push these questions and allow people to ask themselves what they’re looking at and how that resonates in your own community,” he said.

R

acial and sexual identity is grappled with in Seyi Adebanjo’s short documentary “Oya: Something Happened On The Way To West Africa!” The film tackles the disparity in identity between queer or gender fluid Africans in New York and in Nigeria, where Ms. Adebanjo was born. She explained how stigmas in her home country toward the gender queer community came about as a result of colonialism. “It was never anything wrong to be multiple genders in Nigeria,” she said of the pre-colonization era. Ms. Adebanjo explained that the gender queer community of Nigeria

‘fOur WArrIOrS’ (2016), by Thurston randall. still exists, but is not welcomed with the acceptance once found in the nation’s roots. “There’s a level of freedom [in Nigeria] that doesn’t get readily acknowledged,” she said. “I hope people really get a sense of possibility.”

n

icky Enright, a Latino artist, created one of the show’s most poignant pieces on the scope of African identity in the world at large. His painting “Overturned” depicts a traditional world map flipped upside down with Africa in the center. “There’s no reason to show the continents and the ocean the way we do over another way,” Mr. Enright explained. “It’s literally a Euro-center map. By flipping it, I make basically an Afro-centric map.” “The whole show is saying, ‘take another look, take a real look at Africa,’” he added. “It is humanity’s motherland, where we all come from and yet it gets this negative connotation. I like the idea of overturning that. Symbolically I’m overturning this idea that Africa is somehow below, inferior and putting it front and center.” Hostos’ Longwood Gallery, located at 450 Grand Concourse, will display “Bronx:Africa” from Wednesday, Feb. 3 through Wednesday, May 4.

B6 - THE RIVERDALE PRESS - Thursday, January 28, 2016

Home of the week John McDonagh of McDonagh Properties, Inc.

Cozy red-brick abode boasts traditional style

T

he appeal and reliability of a red-brick home is timeless and 6122 Tyndall Ave. embodies this principle. Built in 1925, this single-family North Riverdale house has a quirky curb appeal with its winding front steps adorned with a wall of stonework. A quaint front patio provides an appealing setting for socializing or retreat. Little divides one room from another one on the home’s first floor. The classic dining room connects seamlessly to an office and the living room, a cozy retreat completed with a fireplace.

Also linked is the eat-in kitchen, a nononsense space with plenty of storage and all the fixings. A spacious backyard deck leads out. Three bedrooms and one of the two full baths fill in upstairs with plenty of room for everyone. An attic offers additional storage and further space can be enjoyed in the basement. Parking is available in the rear of the home. According to John McDonagh from McDonagh Properties, Inc., 6122 Tyndall Ave. is priced at $799,000 with $5,600 in annual taxes.

Clockwise from top right: Ornate tiles make a sharp impression in the upstairs bathroom. The dining room, office and living room are all connected. One of the home’s three bedrooms includes a roomy closet and a view. A working fireplace is the centerpiece of the living room. Note: Each week’s featured home is chosen at random from among houses and apartments offered by Riverdale Press advertisers. The opinions expressed are those of the advertiser and not The Riverdale Press news department. For further information, write to advertising@ riverdalepress.com.

THE RIVERDALE PRESS - Thursday, January 28, 2016 - B9

Sports Manhattan staves off Monmouth challenge By Sean Brennan sports@riverdalepress.com Last fall, even before the 2015-16 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) began its season, Justin Robinson, Monmouth University’s stud junior guard, did his best to stoke the flames of a budding rivalry with Manhattan College. He was tired of hearing about the two-time defending MAAC champions, about how hard the Jaspers were to beat at home in the cozy confines of Draddy Gym and how it was time for a new “King of the MAAC.” So when Monmouth showed up at Draddy Gym late last week for its first meeting of the season with Manhattan, the Jaspers players were more than reminded of Robinson’s preseason rants. “We definitely spoke about it. We spoke about it a lot,” Manhattan head coach Steve Masiello said. “We hung it up everywhere. I’ll be honest about it. These guys probably didn’t want to hear another thing about Justin Robinson.” As it turned out, Robinson may need to come up with a plan B on how to dethrone the Jaspers this season as Manhattan held Robinson to just 11 points and overcame an early deficit to post a 78-71 victory over first-place Monmouth. It was a victory that not only got the Jaspers back into the mix for a possible regular-season conference title, but may have also been their most impressive victory of the season. “I think so with their RPI [Ratings Percentage Index]. People sometimes get so stuck on a Mid-Major label, but that’s a top 50 team there on a given night,” Masiello said. “They are the real deal. When we were watching them on film we said, ‘They don’t have a weakness.’ They’re good. They’re really, really good.” The Ratings Percentage Index is a number used to rank a team by combining a team’s wins and losses with its strength of schedule. But the Hawks (15-5, 7-2 MAAC) were not the better team on this night as Manhattan got a career-best 20-point performance from Calvin Crawford and solid outings from RaShawn Stores (14 points, 6 assists), Rich Williams (15 points, 7 rebounds) and freshman Thomas Capuano, who finished with 11 points and the biggest shot of the night and his career. The game didn’t begin all that well for the Jaspers (8-10, 5-4 MAAC), who fell into a 14-2 hole against a Monmouth team that already has claimed victories over such storied basket-

Back and forth But after two straight MAAC titles, which have included victories in games in which Manhattan was viewed as decided underdogs, it has become foolish to ever count these Jaspers out. Like this game, for example, as the Jaspers shook off their slow start and rallied to take a 36-30 lead at the half and then held that lead until late in the second half when Monmouth took the lead at 64-63 on a pair of free throws by Robinson with 5:17 to play. The two teams then traded

the lead back and forth over the next three minutes until Monmouth’s Chris Brady scored on a layup for a 71-69 lead with 1:55 remaining. But a small skirmish broke out between the two teams after the 6-foot10, 250-pound Brady flexed his muscles in celebration of his bucket, a move not at all appreciated by Manhattan’s Zane Waterman and Stores, as players from both teams had to be separated by game officials. It was a move that seemingly ignited a furious Jaspers rally as Manhattan held Monmouth without a single point over the final 1:55 while the Jaspers scored nine straight points with none bigger than Capuano’s clutch three-pointer with 29.8 seconds to play that put the Jaspers out of reach for good at 76-71. “I knew they were going to

jump the ball so they were going to leave me at some point,” Capuano said. “[Stores] just did a great job, he dribbled the ball for like the whole possession around everybody and he just found me late and I was just able to knock it down.” But despite Manhattan’s game-winning rally, Masiello said he doubted the skirmish had much to do with igniting it. Well, sort of. “You have two coaches who are fiery guys and I think your kids are going to reflect that,” Masiello said. “They’re not going to back down and we’re not going to back down. But I didn’t think it was anything disrespectful.” When told later Manhattan closed out the game with a 9-0 run, Masiello said nothing but did crack a wry smile.

Still the champs It was a great start to last weekend as Manhattan was set to face second-place St. Peter’s in another key MAAC battle, but the snowstorm forced the game to be moved from Sunday to Monday night before a leaky roof at St. Peter’s Jersey City gym — caused by the buildup of snow — saw the matchup postponed yet again. A makeup date has yet to be announced. “That was one of the most fun basketball games I was a part of,” Masiello said. “I have so much respect for Monmouth and the job [head coach] King Rice has done and the program they have turned into. I think he’s done a tremendous job of building it and his kids are a class act. They play hard and

are competitive. They are a terrific basketball team and they are definitely an NCAA [Tournament] team, 100 percent.” What the victory over Monmouth proved is that while this Manhattan team may lack the star power of its previous two teams, it is not going to be an easy out in the MAAC this season as the Jaspers try for that rare three-peat. The reigning conference kings will not go quietly. “The MAAC is a tough league,” Rice said. “Steve’s teams, they get better in January and February. That’s what he does better than all of us. Towards the middle and end of the year they start getting better. We got beat by a team that’s still the champs. Everyone is anointing Iona and us, but until you beat Manhattan in March, they’re the champs.”

Riverdale Y’s swim coach copes with cancer her the championships were on March 9 so I made them and I had the surgery the following Wednesday [March 11].” The surgery was successful and a follow-up treatment of radiation and drug therapy was advised. But the side effects of the drug therapy, of a drug called Tamoxifen, spooked Murray. “Stroke, blood clots and the possibility of developing uterine cancer,” Murray said. “So I said I didn’t want that.” Murray chose the radiation and passed on the drug therapy. Radiation was for a total of 21 treatments. “The doctors said without radiation there was a 15-percent chance of recurrence and with radiation, 2-to-3 percent,” Murray said. “Those were good numbers so I said, ‘I’ll take that.’”

By Sean Brennan sports@riverdalepress.com Since September 2012, you can usually find Susan Murray in the pool at The Riverdale Y, conducting practices as head coach of her successful Riverdale Rapids Swim Team or working out her adult clients on her Masters Team. Murray, it seems, is happiest when surrounded by water. “[The Rapids] are part of the Westchester-Fairfield Swim league, a league of 13 to 14 teams in the area of Westchester, Connecticut, Tarrytown, White Plains,” Murray said while sitting in her small office at The Y, located at 5625 Arlington Ave. “We’re one of those teams in the league.” Murray’s team of 43 kids is off to a terrific start to its competitive season, posting a 3-0 record so far with its next meet set to this Sunday. Swimming and teaching is a labor of love for Murray. “I’m here by 4 p.m. or a little earlier,” Murray said. “Practice for the young kids starts at 4:45 for the 8 and unders. There are seven of those but some days I’ll have five, some days I have one. So we have to gear the practice to who we have that day. But at 5:30, my assistant head Charles Buckley takes over the 8 and unders and I coach the older kids, which range from 9-15. Practice is over at 7 p.m. but two nights a week I have Masters practice with the adults until 8:30. Other times there are administrative duties to take care of, such as swim meet entries, things like that.” Murray said the swimming community at The Y has become like a family because of all the time they spend together. “We definitely get to know our kids pretty well,” Murray said. “We get to know who needs a little softer touch and who can handle straight talk. We

Surger y delayed But as happy as teaching in the pool makes Murray, her life outside it the past year has been more tumultuous. Last January, a yearly mammogram brought the stark news that Murray had breast cancer. “On a routine mammogram they found a speck that was different from the last mammogram the previous year,” Murray said. “My doctor showed it to me and I said, ‘It looks like a little white-out dot; what are you talking about?’ But they were pretty clear that

a biopsy was an important thing to do and I agreed to it. About five days after the biopsy I got the call that said it was carcinoma. Early-stage breast cancer. My doctors said it was the best form of breast cancer to get because it’s the most treatable and curable.” With that mixed bag of good and bad news, Murray’s surgery was to be performed at New York Hospital. But the swim coach in Murray asked for a delay. Not because she was afraid of the operation, but there was something rather important on her calendar. “When I spoke to the surgeon, I said, ‘We’re starting our championships. Can we do this after our championships?’” Murray said. “So I told her when the dates were and I that really wanted to be around for them. I told

Murray started radiation in late May and by early summer she had completed her therapy, missing just one week of work along the way, back in the pool on a regular basis. Here’s where one would think the toughest part was over for Murray. Yes, her surgery was a success and her prognosis is excellent, but there was one last hurdle that confronted Murray — the Affordable Care Act, commonly called Obamacare. “I don’t know if you know anything about Obamacare,” Murray said. “I was 100 percent for it, but when you get into it, it’s an incredible labyrinth. I don’t think it was intended to be that, but it is. Now I have a new health plan [as of January 1] and hopefully I’ll be able to navigate whatever comes up with this health plan.” Because her previous health plan was growing too expensive, Murray was forced to find a more affordable

one — one that didn’t include her former surgeon or oncology doctors. “I got into Obamacare and I’m just rolling with the punches now because that’s how it is,” Murray said. “If you want the kind of health care I had before, you’re going to have to pay a $1,000 a month or something like that if you’re paying for it yourself and I am paying for it myself. It’s a reality check. What is this? How can this be like this? It’s bad enough you’re recovering from something so debilitating, but then to throw that into it? That’s not good health care. It’s not a good philosophy.” As any cancer patient knows, there are follow-up checkups to adhere to, but Murray doesn’t quite know yet when her next appointments will be. “I’m in the process of making myself sit down and pick out the hospital I think I’d feel comfortable going to and then seeing what doctors will accept the insurance I have,” Murray said. “This is what we have now. I just hope it improves.” In the meantime, while she navigates the tricky waters of Obamacare, Murray has a 3-0 swim team to keep her occupied. Like she said earlier, there is a new meet Sunday to get her Rapids ready for. “It’s going to be here at The Y and then we have two more meets here and then the trials and our championships,” Murray said. “Then by the end of February, we’ll be looking around at other local pools who have teams and see if we can arrange to swim against them for fun. Have some fun. Just some fun meets.” After a year of diagnosis, surgery, radiation and the mind-numbing complexities of finding appropriate health care, if there is anyone who deserves to have some fun, it’s Susan Murray. You’ll find her at the pool at The Riverdale Y.
