Montecito and Santa Barbara’s Private Clubs It is hard to imagine a more idyllic setting than the tiny seaside village of Montecito. One of the nation's wealthiest communities, it communicates its grandeur with understated elegance and sublime sophistication. It is certainly an A-list locale without an oversized attitude. With approximately 10,000 residents and 3,000 households, Montecito retains much of its original charm but with the niceties of a contemporary, stylish community. Just east of Santa Barbara, the area is nestled between the sea and the picturesque foothills known as the Santa Ynez Mountain Range. This natural boundary leaves no room for growth or urban sprawl, sustaining high property values and a thriving community. Montecito real estate and architectural styles vary, offering something for everyone— picture-book cottages, elegant Mediterranean villas, luxury oceanfront estates and most everything in-between. There are three private golf clubs in Montecito, while the Coral Casino Beach and Cabana club and Knowlwood Tennis Club and offer both swim and tennis clubs for their members. Santa Barbara also offers one private golf club. We will cover all these clubs in this overview.

Birnam Wood Country Club

Designed by the renowned Robert Trent Jones Sr., who praised it as “a thinking man’s course”, Birnam Wood is as challenging and resplendent as it is exclusive, with membership by invitation only. The fairways are planted with grass that was specially designed in Georgia to thrive in the local climate. Previously a lemon packing house built in 1892, the Clubhouse is a glimpse into the past, and all repairs and upgrades have carefully preserved the design and master stonework as much as possible. The course is situated among a prestigious and private community of luxury homes. The 18-hole course at Birnam Wood features 5,890 yards of golf for a par of 70. The course rating is 68.7 and it has a slope rating of 121 on Bermuda grass. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the Birnam Wood golf course opened in 1968 In addition to the golf course, members of the Birnam Wood Golf Club enjoy six tennis courts (four hard court and two Har-Tru courts). Every prospective purchaser of property within Birnam Wood is required to apply to become a Corporate Member of the Club. Membership is by invitation only if you do not live in the community.

Valley Club of Montecito

Squeezed between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains, the Valley Club of Montecito was opened for play in 1929 and is located on the outskirts of the wellheeled Montecito community, east of Santa Barbara. Designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie and built by his partner Robert Hunter, this charming course features all of the guile and ingenuity one would expect of such a design team, though on a softer, more subtle scale than some of their more noted creations. The strength of the course is the sensible location of hazards and the ability of the designers to route interesting holes across the diverse landscape. Green and bunker shapes here are slightly less extravagant than on a course like Pasatiempo, yet the design is similarly centered around sophisticated golf holes that all players can handle but the scratch golfer can only conquer with strategic play. The artistic bunkering is outstanding while the greens, which are generally smaller than others by MacKenzie, blend naturally into their surrounds and are full of contours and sharp angles. The Valley Club owns one of the best-preserved and most authentic MacKenzie designs to be found anywhere in America. In addition to the golf course, members of Valley Club enjoy tennis courts and a fine dining restaurant. Unfortunately the club is also extremely private, but for those able to make it through the gates here the experience is something quite special. Membership is by invitation only.

Coral Casino Beach and Cabana Club

History: The Coral Casino Beach and Cabana Club is a private membership club, situated atop Butterfly Beach at the Four Seasons Biltmore of Santa Barbara. Built in 1937, this legendary establishment and historic landmark has a rich history steeped in the glory of Hollywood, celebrated architecture and fine hoteliers plans for a grand, first-class social club where prominent families of the area, and Hollywood’s elite could gather. Odell commissioned San Francisco architect Gardner A. Dailey – already well known for his contemporary style – to design the original “Biltmore Beach Club” on the triangular-shaped grounds adjacent to the hotel. Its look was in contrast to the Spanish-Colonial architecture of Santa Barbara, instead featuring clean, modern lines and Scandinavian contemporary furnishings. The curious name “Coral Casino” was inspired in part by its unique oceanfront setting; while “casino” was a term widely used in the era that defined the establishment’s social club status. The club’s most celebrated feature is a larger-than-Olympic size swimming pool (50 meters + 1 foot), which earned its irregular size during an evening of gentlemen’s poker. It is said that an argument transpired between Mr. Odell and the Olympic Commissioner of the time that resulted in the pool’s size being slightly increased so that it could never be used to host regulated events. Since its grand opening on July 24, 1937, the Coral Casino has hosted some of the world’s foremost dignitaries, Hollywood stars and filmmakers, musicians and noted philanthropists. In 2005, current owner Ty Warner closed the club to begin an extensive, $65 million rehabilitation effort. Warner hired New York based architect and designer Peter Marino to lead the project – no easy task, given the building’s status as a designated historical landmark. Marino’s team meticulously restored the club to its original splendor, along with notable improvements that include upgraded locker facilities, fossilized marble decking, and a new second-story restaurant with panoramic ocean views. Marino looked to the vision and principles of Gardner Dailey for guidance in restoring the original theme and purpose of the club while embracing
