What is Law Day??  What is Law Day? ◦ The Declaration of Freedom, Constitution, and the United States is built on the belief in the rule of law. The rule of law is the belief that in order for there to be freedom, everyone must follow the laws we have created for ourselves; no one is above them. Law day is a celebration of America’s commitment to the rule of law.  When is Law Day? ◦ Law Day is May 1 of every year.  When did Law Day start? ◦ The idea of a national Law Day was conceived in 1957 by American Bar Association President Charles S. Rhynes. On February 5, 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower established the first Law Day, proclaiming “in a very real sense, the world no longer has a choice between force and law. If civilization is to survive it must choose the rule of law.” On April 7, 1961, the U.S. Congressissued a joint resolution making May 1 the official Law Day. Every year, the President issuesa proclamation at the end of April in support of Law Day.  What is the theme of this year’s Law Day? ◦ The theme this year is “No Courts. No Justice. No Freedom.” This theme is dedicated to the growing concern that the American court system is in danger of shutting down. State and Federal Governments are faced with severe budgetary concerns and the courts are consistently having their budgets cut. Many courthousesare being forced to consider drastic measures to stay within their budgets, including cutting staff or closing courthousespart of the week. Without the courts, there is no longer an impartial forum to have your caseheard or your rights protected.
