The Cabinet is likely to consider this week fixing February 1 as date of presentation of the Budget after the Election Commission gave its nod in light of the upcoming Assembly elections in five states. Having decided to advance the Budget presentation by a month, the Government took the line that it should not be presented in the middle of Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur.

So, it consulted the Election Commission, which has concurred ith the Fi a ce Mi istry’s ie that it is a a ual fi a cial state e t a d ca co e a yti e of the Go er e t’s choice, officials said.The Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to meet on Wednesday or Thursday to decide on the date for Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to present the Budget for 2017-18.The Cabinet had on September 21 inprinciple decided to end the colonial-era tradition of presenting the Union Budget on the last day of February and advance it by about a month to help complete the legislative approval for annual spending plans and tax proposals before beginning of the new financial year on April 1.

The Sensex and Nifty were trading higher by nearly 2 per cent due to short-covering in stocks such as Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd and Tata Steel Ltd, while broader sentiment was underpinned by positive global cues.
SEGMENT
The 30-share BSE index Sensex was up 515.12 points or 1.87 per cent at 28,045.09 and the 50-share NSE index Nifty was up 156 points or 1.83 per cent at 8,676.40.
