333. The Politics of Congress

Four credits. This course focuses on theories of representation, the history of Congress, campaigns and elections, lobbying, institutional rules, committees, party leadership, and how Congress works with other institutions. Prerequisites: Politics and Government 110, 220 or consent of the instructor.

334. The American Presidency

Schatzinger

Four credits. Analyzes the development and modern practice of presidential leadership. Themes examined include the institutional presidency, presidential selection, decision-making, and the relationship of the presidency with the executive branch, Congress, courts, interest groups, the press and the public. Students will investigate the political resources and constraints influencing the President’s ability to provide leadership in the U.S. political system. Prerequisites: Politics and Government 110, 220 or consent of the instructor.

341. Public Policy Analysis

Four credits. Introduction to public policy formulation and analysis, including agenda-setting strategies, problems of legitimation, the appropriations process, implementation, evaluation, resolution, and termination. Analysis of policy content, alternatives, and impact. Prerequisite: Politics and Government 220 or consent of the instructor.

343. U.S. National Security Policy

Colucci

Four credits. Provides an overview of U.S. national security policy, with special attention to the sources of threats to U.S. national security, approaches to national security strategy, the role of conventional military force and nuclear weapons, and actors in the policy making process. In addition, we will investigate several current debates affecting national security policy making in the United States. Prerequisite: Politics and Government 280 or consent of the instructor.

346. Morality and Public Policy

Four credits. The social and moral debates that have become politically divisive in the United States will be covered. From pornography, sex education, gay rights, to abortion and gambling, the course examines the social origins of moral politics, the emergence and growth of social movements around these issues, and the ways in which battles over morality continue to shape our society. Students will investigate the limits and usefulness of decision-making tools, problems of choosing, justifying and using criteria to judge a program’s success and suitability. Prerequisites: Politics and Government 110, 220 or consent of the instructor.

370. Topics in Comparative Politics

Staff

Four credits. Exploration and analysis of problems of contemporary concern in comparative politics. Students may repeat the course for credit when topics change. Some topics may count toward the Global and Cultural Studies requirement.

372. Development and Change in Latin America
