Rio Rancho Parks & Recreation “To create and maintain spaces and activities that grow a greater sense of community and enhance the quality of life for its residents.”

Message from the Director: Dear Residents and Guests, These are a few of my favorite things about Rio Rancho: beautiful parks with playgrounds, great schools, miles of trails, the Rio Rancho Bosque, safe neighborhoods and caring people. We’re the 3rd largest City in New Mexico, yet we retain a wonderful small-town feeling, evidenced by city-wide special events like the Park in the Park car show each spring, the Mayor’s Sunday is Funday every fall, Pork n’ Brew, the 4th of July parade and the firework display that brings thousands of people together to celebrate our nations freedom, the Pooch Plunge in September, and the holiday parade in December. These are just a small sample of such events! We provide a dynamic summer recreation and aquatics program drawing hundreds of participants, as well as a community education program that offers dozens of classes. The Meadowlark Senior Center provides a place dedicated to enhancing the lives of our Rio Rancho seniors. The Rio Rancho Libraries are some of the busiest branches in the New Mexico Library system, and are gathering places offering activities such as LEGO Club, Comic Con for teens, the annual Summer Kick-off Party, family night programs, and hundreds of other programs all year long. I appreciate and enjoy my quality of life here in Rio Rancho. Whether you’re looking for a place to visit, live, or build a business, know that you are welcome in Rio Rancho! Sincerely, Connie Peterson Director of Parks, Recreation, and Community Services

For more information on upcoming events, please visit www.santaanastarcenter.com

How to Watch a Good Program Die Nothing kills a recreation program faster than residents who wait until the last minute to register. There is a point when a program must be cancelled or modified if there is insufficient registration. All programs require a high level of coordination often including facility scheduling, staffing, volunteer recruitment, and purchasing of supplies.

T’ai Chi Chih T’ai Chi Chih – serenity in the midst of activity – is a series of 19 movements and one pose, which were originated by Justin Stone. Mr. Stone taught T’ai Chi Ch’uan for many years before developing a new technique which he called T’ai Chi Chih. T’ai Chi Chih is simple and easy to learn with benefits usually beginning from the first class. The gentle movements emphasize a flowing continuity and strongly stimulate the flow and balance of Chi or the “vital force” in the body. Benefits of regular T’ai Chi Chih practice can include stress reduction, weight and blood pressure control, increased energy, and a greater enthusiasm for life. As the practitioner becomes relaxed, a new understanding and perspective is formed, creative energy flows more freely, and greater joy in everyday life becomes apparent. • • • • • • •
