During this weekly “make & play” time, young exploring artists can experiment with an array of art materials. Are you a young artist who is looking for a creative outlet, and serious about elevating and/or expanding your skills in fine art media? Join Ms. Broyles to make projects such as creating your own sketchbooks, pop art portraits inspired by Andy Warhol, clay, sculptures, zentangles, and more. Classes will focus on a variety of techniques and materials, including drawing, painting, and large-scale project work. Come to EAC on the third (3rd) Thursday evening of the month to be inspired by your own creativity. Each week, we will feature a different instructor to engage the artenthusiast or art-maker in you. Each session, participants will be able to learn a new art skill or technique, vibe with other artists, experiment with materials, or experience cultural critique. All classes and projects are accessible to newbies and engaging to long-time creators. All materials are included, and of course, there will be plenty of artist’s fuel (snacks!) to keep you going.

Explore the tactile and fun nature of clay in this introduction to the medium. Emphasis will be on the fundamental skills, vocabulary, equipment, materials, and preparations specific to ceramics. In this course, students learn the skill of centering and evenly distributing clay to make cups with handles, bowls, plates, and vases. Discover the vibrant art of Majolica in this introductory workshop focused on ceramic tiles. Participants will learn the fundamentals of the Majolica technique, including applying the base glaze and painting their own designs using colorful glazes. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced ceramic artist, this hands-on class will guide you through the process of creating beautifully decorated tiles that showcase the expressive potential of Majolica. Traditional painters will find this workshop a wonderful opportunity to translate their skills into the ceramic medium. Participants are encouraged to bring sketches or ideas of what they want to paint on the first day of class to make the most of their creative experience. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have created your own unique set of handpainted ceramic tiles and the skills to continue exploring this timeless art form.

This authorization workshop is for skilled ceramics students and/or members who want to participate in the Ceramics Open Studio without actively being enrolled in a ceramics class. Participants’ knowledge of the basic ceramics process: hand-building, wheel throwing, glazing techniques, and proper studio procedures will be reviewed and rated by an EAC ceramic instructor.
Note: Students will need to bring a minimum of one or two bisque pieces, which will require firing to the level of cone five for glazing.
Pre-Requisite: Must have prior intermediate to advanced ceramics experience.

Learn to prepare, glaze, and fire bisque pieces in a Raku kiln. Bring up to two pieces (already bisque) totaling 1/2 cubic
feet of kiln space. Vessels not larger than 5-6” in diameter and 12” in height work best. Get two pulls from the hot kiln. Price includes instruction, glazes, and equipment use. (Additional or oversized pieces may be fired for an additional cost, time and space permitting.) To avoid problems with cracking, it is highly recommended that the bisque pieces used for Raku are made from stoneware with grog.

If you want the full Raku experience, this workshop is for you. In the first session, students will create two hand-built objects using slab, coil, or pinch methods. The pieces will be fired to bisque. In the second session, students will have the opportunity to participate in the full Raku firing experience. Come celebrate the interplay of light and color by creating your own glass mosaic. So, you don’t know how to draw or even where to begin? It takes some time to feel confident about your drawings, but this class can show you the ways to help you take those first steps. This four-week course will introduce you to the unique world of scratchboarding and/or colored pencil. You will be introduced to the essential techniques needed while using a variety of different tools to bring your image to life. Your photo references can be of any subject that you choose — a favorite animal, person, or place. Students can also expand your drawing skills with color! Using a reference image, you will learn the necessary techniques, color theory, burnishing, and layering to develop a quality colored pencil drawing. Come illustrate, explore, and express anything that inspires you. Students in this class have the option to participate in both mediums or only in Scratchboard or only in Colored Pencil.

This class is for students who are interested in learning to paint in these iconic traditions or may want to put a new spin on this classic painting style. Painting objects from life utilizing a still life set-up, live model (up to two sessions per series), or plein air will give students the ability to see and develop a realistic painting style. Students will have the opportunity to develop classic oil painting techniques through demonstration and practice. Are you curious about watercolor painting? This introductory course is designed to help the artist new to watercolor. You will learn the fundamentals of creating realistic-style paintings with a relaxed approach. Make your watercolors come to life! The class focuses on techniques to enhance details to create more expressive work. Students will provide their own reference material, be it a non-copyrighted image, personal photo, or original drawing by the student. Using a lightbox, students can transfer their chosen image onto watercolor paper or confident students are welcome to draw freehand directly onto the watercolor paper.

Students will discover how to make small felted beads using a combination of wool, silk, and other miscellaneous materials. Each participant will have a wide selection of materials to choose from and should be able to make approximately nine beads to take home for their own jewelry-making project. Tips and examples will be shown on how to further embellish their beads and finish a small jewelry project.

Using a simple dye transfer method, students in this class will transform an ordinary piece of silk into an extraordinary scarf, for daily use or a decorative touch. During the session, students will learn the process of designing and dying the scarves through the dye transfer process. The instructor will also demonstrate how students can finish their scarves at home with their choice of beads, fringe, fabric markers, etc. The opportunities are endless!

Explore fun texture and color combinations by building a small fiber ‘painting’ using twine and wool roving. Your work will be created and completed inside a small, shadow box style wood frame that is ready to take home in one session! No experience necessary and all materials are supplied.

Johan Bjurman is classically trained in several painting disciplines. He established Bjurman Studio specializing in commercial artwork, including several significant and nationally recognizable projects, such as designing and painting seven trompe l’oeil lunettes of Mozart’s operas which are installed at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. Now retired, Johan spends his time in Rhode Island and Florida where he practices plein air landscape painting and exhibits his work widely.
Christine Broyles is a graduate of the University of South Florida with a major in fine arts and art education and a minor in science, grades 5-9. She has worked for more than 30 years in Charlotte County Public Schools. Chris is the only original faculty member of the L.A. Ainger Middle School still teaching there today. Chris is an artist in her own right, working in many art medias including ceramics, acrylic, watercolor, jewelry, photography, sculpture, mixed media, and stained glass.
Robert Broyles is an award-winning, published watercolor artist, illustrator, teacher, and co-author of Art Across the Curriculum. He earned his BA with honors in fine art and art education from the University of South Florida. In his paintings, Robert strives to use rich, sumptuous, and colorful images to help raise awareness of the beauty of the fragile world we inhabit. His work has been exhibited throughout Southwest Florida.
Lou-Anne Curtis is a freelance photographer specializing in portrait and nature photography. She captures subtle moments that often go unnoticed: the color of early morning light, the long shadows of a late summer afternoon, fog sneaking across the bay. Her work is shown in Englewood, Port Charlotte, and Punta Gorda, Florida.
Mary Gaines is a self-taught artist who experimented in several mediums, including drawing, quilting, painting, clay, needlework, and several craft hobbies, before discovering her love for stained glass. She’s found that her style lies outside of the precision of traditional copper foiling and instead, Mary creates masterful mosaics. Mary likes to upcycle materials using bits of stained glass to create designs framed in old windows and repurposed picture frames. The color, sunlight, and beautiful flora and fauna of Florida keep her inspired to create her artwork.
Diane Mannion is a realistic landscape and portrait artist. Her watercolor and pastel works simultaneously capture the vivid beauty and touristy chaos of her home state of Florida. Diane studied fine art at Pratt and SUNY, and worked as a professional illustrator for over 30 years. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2011 Bowles Portrait Award and the 2012 Fine Art Connoisseur Award of Excellence. Diane’s work is exhibited in galleries throughout the United States.
Maggie McClellan is an accomplished painter who exhibits her work nationally and abroad. She is a signature member of the Florida Watercolor Society, Gold Coast Watercolor Society, and the Miami Watercolor Society. Maggie has authored successful teaching programs across the United States, in the Caribbean, and abroad. She is the author of the popular book, The Artist’s Express – Secrets of the Obedient Brush.
Michele Moore transforms organic materials, primarily bone, into captivating sculptures and wearable art. Her thriving business, Bone Boutique, reflects her passion for creating unique pieces and fostering artistic appreciation. Michele brings expertise in design, marketing, and business management to guide students in exploring their own creative journeys.
Nichole Moranda is an artist and native Floridian who studied at the Florida School of the Arts, MCC Bradenton, and USF Tampa, where she received her BFA in ceramics. Nichole has a focus in ceramic hand-building with a background in wheel throwing. Her ceramic work has been displayed as installations, functional pieces, and as jewelry pendants.
Lorraine Mushacke is a glass artist from New Hampshire where she began taking classes and developed her love of working with glass. Since 2009, Lorraine has worked in her home studio, exhibiting at art festivals and art centers, while taking on commissions. Recently Lorraine has dedicated more of her time to instruct and inspire others.
Bob “Nish” Nishihira was a full-time commercial photographer for 18 years in California, with clients such as IBM, Callaway Golf, and Qualcomm. He taught at the City College of San Francisco for 20 years. He has achieved several honors including CA Magazine’s Award of Excellence, ASMP’s Gold Award, and has been published in magazines, such as, Vogue and Town & Country. Bob is now enjoying retirement while continuing to inspire and teach.
Laura Pommier earned her MA from Indiana State University and a BFA from Murray State University. Previously from Indiana, she worked as a graphic artist while producing studio art and exhibiting in shows nationwide. Now in Florida, Laura works in her studio and teaches painting, drawing, and pastel. She has been featured in The Herald Tribune, Sarasota Magazine, Healthy Living Magazine, and Wellen Park Living. Additionally, she has painted numerous local murals.
Dr. Roger Singer, Poet Laureate Emeritus of Connecticut, is a prolific poet with over 1,500 published works. His poems have graced the pages of Walt’s Corner, Westward Quarterly, and numerous other literary journals. Recipient of the Ambassador Poetry Award and poetry society honors from Louisiana, Arizona, and Massachusetts, Dr. Singer encourages authentic self-expression. His work has been widely published, and his passion for poetry continues to ignite the imaginations of many.
Julianne Soble is a retired educator in the arts and special education. Julianne earned her BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago with an Arts Education certificate, and her Masters in Special Education from Northeastern Illinois University. Julianne achieved National Board Certification in Exceptional Needs. Julianne’s arts focus has always been in Ceramics where she fell in love with wheel throwing and creating functional ceramics. Julianne is happy to share her love of ceramics and its processes through instruction in wheel throwing.
Marc Strauss, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Southeast Missouri State University, has taught courses in ballet, jazz, dance history, aesthetics, musicals, and Alfred Hitchcock. Author of Hitchcock’s Objects as Subjects: The Significance of Things on Screen (2016; McFarland), his new book, Hitchcock’s Effect on Audience Emotion, is due June 2025.
Sherry Tamburo is a fiber artist with a design degree in Architecture from the University of Florida. Her interest in fiber arts began with weaving, spinning, basketry and evolved into wet felting. The authenticity and sustainability of the materials used in wet felting creates a canvas for self-expression and exploration. This alchemy creates magic; join Sherry to experience this amazing process.
Sheryl Unwin attended The Art Institute of Boston. After years of developing her skills, she chose to share her knowledge with other artists. In 2005 she decided to enjoy the beauty of Florida living, culture, wildlife, and fabulous scenery that only the Gulf Coast of Florida can give. Her passion is to draw from people, the largest of wildlife creatures, and the smallest of domestic pets.
Marianne Vogel is a fiber artist and retired advertising executive. Marianne earned her BFA from Tyler School of Art and has formal training in both fiber arts and graphic design. Marianne’s intricate art includes weaving and felt work, and reflects a fascination with repeated patterns and texture combinations. She believes happiness is directly tied to the creative process, and brings this playful philosophy to the classroom.
Lana Cease is an internationally acclaimed watercolor artist based in Southwest Florida. Renowned for her hyperrealistic depictions of antique toys and underwater worlds, her work has garnered numerous awards and is collected globally. As a signature member of the American, Transparent, and National Watercolor Societies, where she serves as Education Director, Lana’s influence extends beyond her own artistic achievements. Her lifelong passion for creation, ignited in childhood, has led to a prolific career.
Marie LaForge is a collage artist and photographer with a lifelong passion for visual expression. Raised in the French Alps amidst an artistic family, she studied graphic arts and advertising in Paris. Travel ignited her love for diverse cultures and inspired her unique collage style. Combining found materials with a surrealist sensibility, Marie creates dreamlike compositions that invite personal interpretation. Based in Florida, she balances her artistic pursuits with co-owning Mango Bistro, a beloved local restaurant.
Phillip S. Moore is an artist whose vibrant soft pastels capture the beauty and complexity of the world around him. Inspired by his military service and his unique color-blindness, his work explores themes of resilience, healing, and the human spirit. As a veteran, Phillip uses art as a form of therapy, sharing his unique perspective and inviting others to find solace in creative expression.
Julie Terwelp holds a BFA in Graphic Design with a strong minor in Surface Design from East Carolina University. In 2016, Julie discovered a passion for ceramics during her first hand-building class, igniting a deep enthusiasm for exploring the endless possibilities of shaping clay. As a small-batch ceramic artist, Julie creates one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect her background in graphic and surface design. Her work is characterized by a vibrant interplay of color, pattern, and texture, celebrating the unique beauty of each handcrafted item.

• Background check: Ringling College of Art and Design requires a background check for all eligible volunteers

The Englewood Art Center (EAC) has been a prominent member of the local arts community for more than 50 years. As a division of Ringling College of Art and Design since 2008, EAC has benefited from the College’s commitment and support—allowing the Center to plan for a bright future.

Englewood Art Center Refund Policy:
If you drop a course prior to two business days before the first scheduled class session, you will receive a refund minus a 25% administrative fee.
If you drop a course after 2 business days before the first scheduled class session, you forfeit your entire tuition.
