HeadFirst Sports Injury and Concussion Care In June 2011, Righttime Medical Care CEO and Chief Pediatrician Robert G. Graw, Jr., M.D., initiated an innovative task force, known as the Concussion Consortium, with the goal of protecting student-athletes from head injury. Formed as a result of groundbreaking legislation passed in Maryland in May 2011, the group is comprised of top neurologists, orthopedists, neuropsychologists, educators, coaches and certified athletic trainers who meet regularly to develop protocol for diagnosing, managing and treating concussions. Maryland became the 18th state to pass the HB 858 and SB 771 laws, which were created to protect student-athletes playing sports at public schools and on Parks & Recreation-owned land. The law is modeled after Washington state’s Zackery Lystedt Law, named for a student who nearly died after sustaining a concussion while playing football. Months of discussion and planning by the Concussion Consortium resulted in the launch of HeadFirst Sports Injury and Concussion Care. HeadFirst opened the doors to its first Care Center in April 2012, adjacent to Righttime Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland. Today, most Righttime Care Centers have a HeadFirst clinic. The program includes post-injury medical evaluations for patients of all ages, including steps for a safe return to play, work or school, as well as neurocognitive baseline testing for sports teams and individuals. The HeadFirst medical team also offers support to trainers and coaches and a community concussion awareness program. For more information please visit myHeadFirst.com.
