Bisou Bisou was founded in 1989 by French designer Michele Bohbot and her husband,

Marc Bohbot. The Bohbot’s mission was “to bring Parisian street fashion with a modern style to American fashion.” The name “Bisou Bisou” is French slang for “just a little kiss” and fully embodies the brands image, which stands for confidence, style and charm. Bisou Bisou began in a small studio in Los Angeles, where Michele kissed pieces of fabric with red lipstick to label her garments. Before she knew it, her vision became a reality with free standing designer boutiques all across America. The Bisou Bisou girl was young, sexy and intelligent, with a knack for style. Not only do Bisou Bisou clothes look great, they make the woman feel great. Season after season, she can depend on Bisou Bisou to deliver and represent her values and fashion sense and the Bisou Bisou woman knows she can find fashion forward pieces at affordable pricing.

In 2003, Michele signed a licensing agreement with department store chain, JCPenney,

making her brand exclusive to the store. With this partnership came many new challenges; a new customer, a larger size range and a lower budget. Seven years later, Bisou Bisou is the #1 bestselling brand on the contemporary floor pad at JCPenney. Michele and Bisou Bisou have found success through this partnership, and are looking for opportunities for future growth and development.

BRAND PROFILE

Bisou Bisou is a modern contemporary missy brand exclusively to JCPenney. The style

represents a bit of trend, flirty feminine details and European flair. It is a designer experience for the masses. Always keeping their customer in mind, Bisou Bisou has created a one-stop shopping experience with expansion into Dresses, Footwear, Handbags, Swimwear, Cold Weather Accessories, and most recently; Fine Jewelry. The goal of Bisou Bisou is to provide stylish, unique fashions at an affordable price point. Besides fashion Bisou Bisou stands for the empowerment of women. Michelle and everybody at Bisou Bisou want to provide their customers with clothing that will not only make them look good, but feel good.

Market Analysis

The fashion industry covers many different categories from accessories to footwear and

apparel just to name a few. This project is about the apparel industry – specifically women’s apparel, which is one of the most lucrative sectors of the industry, covering missy, junior, and women’s categories. As of 2008, the women’s wear accounted for 60% of the apparel market in the US, while men’s and children share the remaining 40%. From 1980 to 2008 the share of outerwear has increases by 15% and is now 20%. It is expected to rise to 40% by 2014.

Within the United States fashion industry, which in 2006 covered 22.3% of the world-

wide apparel market share, there are 1,108 JCPenney stores (United States & Puerto Rico). As of 2006 the total global revenue was $1,252.8 billion.

Bisou Bisou is only available in the United States market in a limited retail space (JCPen-

JCPenney has 1,108 stores in the United States and Puerto Rico as of 2010 and sells a wide range of products. Due in part to the recession, sales decreased by 6.9% in 2008, by 5% in 2009, and are now offering discounts and a strict inventory control to prevent sales from decreasing even further. Another challenge facing the department store is the customers turning towards discount chains such as Target and Wal-Mart, where there has been a decrease of money spent in department stores of 11% from 2002-2008. 54% of JCPenney revenue is coming from Private Label brands.

In effect this means that the time for change could not be better. If the company puts

heavy effort into updating themselves now, towards a more trendy fast fashion model, we will see success as with many other competitive brands. Bisou Bisou should be able to help re-gain customers back to their market. As long as there are unexplored markets there are sales potential available, and Bisou Bisou can expand to have a great share of the target market, despite the recent trend in shift of shopping behavioral style.

Survey Results

In order to design and develop the appropriate styles for the Bisou Bisou target cus-

tomer, it is essential to really know who this person is and what the behavioral patterns are in regards to lifestyle, shopping, and priorities. For this purpose several channels were explored for surveying people; in-person, social media, telephone, surveymonkey.com etc. In the following one of the surveys is shown along with answers reflecting complied answers.

The online survey allowed for a greater geographic range of answers, and in trying to

determine who the typical Bisou Bisou customer is, it is good to know where she lives, and what ethnicity she has as well:

80 people responded to the survey on www.surveymoney.com and the in-person survey

presented approximately 25 people all of which were combined in these results. Other questions asked, included; educational level & occupation, favorite type of outer wear, and which types of tops usually worn layered. All of which aided in focusing on getting the best styles for the Bisou Bisou target customerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s true needs.

What they look for when shopping?

As seen on the above chart, the plus size consumer values fit as the most important element

when she shops for clothes. Following fit, she looks for the style, while she values fabric, color, and prints equally. Knowing this, getting the right fabrics and fiber content is essential; as comfort follows the fit. Researching further into fabrics and fit, respondents answered, that stretchy fabrics, and styles which draw emphasis from the hips to the bust are preferred.

Target Customer

The Bisou Bisou customer is a woman with self confidence. She wants to be stylish and

flirty, but shops on a budget. The Bisou girl wants more than just clothes; she wants versatility, style and comfort- truly more “bang” for her buck. Bisou Bisou attracts women of a wide agerange (25-45), the young and the young at heart. The typical customer is in her mid 30’s with a career and children. She values family and friends above anything else in her life. This woman has a busy schedule, and loves that Bisou Bisou clothes are machine washable and always true to fit- both of which save her lots of time. When she has free time, she loves to spend time with her family; at barbeques or taking “daycations”. She loves to go out for drinks with her girlfriends, and always looks great in Bisou Bisou.

She lives mainly in the city or suburbs, where she has shopping, work and leisure activi-

ties within reasonable reach. She likes unique and fashionable clothing that can transition from work wear to casual or going out. Items that can be dressed up or down is preferred, that way she can justify spending a bit more on the really great pieces and then mix with some basic items. She is most likely either married or in a relationship and lives in a house (rental or owned). The typical Bisou Bisou Customer shops at least once a month, and she enjoys the fact that she does not have to spend hours in the fitting rooms looking for the right fit and look for her – she knows what she gets when shopping Bisou Bisou styles.

Consumer Buying Habits

The average Bisou Bisou customer will typically go out shopping for clothes one to two

times per month and on average she will spend $100 to $150 per trip. She shops Target, Kohl’s, Macy’s and always wants value for her money. Every once in a while she will splurge and spend extra on that one great piece that will last longer and match the other items she already has.

Her favorite brands include Allen B and I Heart Ronson, both sharing the same floor

pad as Bisou Bisou, at JCPenney, but also higher end brands such as Bebe, Express, and BCBG. She also shops at Old Navy, Gap, ZARA, and H&M, but usually goes for the more “safe” pieces. She likes to see the newest trends and the most fashion forward pieces being tested by other consumers, for a while before she feels comfortable wearing them.

Analysis of Competitors I.N.C. (Macy’s)

I.N.C. is a private label brand at Macy’s. It is one of the most successful private label

brands in Macy’s. The look is fresh, modern, refined with a contemporary flair for office or weekends, with trend-right sportswear presented at affordable prices with a noticeable highly fashionable profile. The price point is $20 - $100.

Vera Wang (Kohl’s)

Launched in 1990 with a collection of wedding gowns Vera Wang has since grown into

a multimillion dollar business. The brand now includes fragrance, jewelry, eyewear, shoe and houseware collections as well as the diffusion line, “SimplyVera” which is sold exclusively at Kohl’s. The price point for the “SimplyVera” line is $14.99 - $49.99

Mango

Is a Spanish company based in Barcelona. The concept behind the brand, is based on an

alliance between quality products, original designs, and a unique brand image, designing clothes for the modern, urban woman. In North America, Mango stores operate under the name “MNG

by Mango”. In December 2009, JCPenney and Mango announced plans for JCPenney to become Mango’s exclusive department store retailer in the United States. MNG by Mango launched in 75 JCPenney stores and online at www.jcp.com in Fall 2010. JCPenney plans to expand the MNG by Mango brand to over 600 JCPenney stores by Fall 2011.

H&M

Founded in 1947 in Sweden, H&M is sold in 38 countries. The first store opened in the

USA in 2000. The price point is: $10 - $100, and covers women’s, men’s, children’s, accessories, jewelry, and shoes. In 2004, the company launched the first designer collaboration line, designed by Karl Lagerfeld. The most recent line was designed by Lanvin and launched in fall 2010.

Bisou Bisou in Comparison

Bisou Bisou takes a spot within the fast fashion designer market, which in the past few

years has become a retail trend. Its direct competitors include MNG by Mango at JCPenney, INC at Macy’s, and Vera Wang at Kohl’s. These brands have a much larger following, and take up market share from Bisou Bisou, because they are more well-known. They are on the higherend of trend and exude a much trendier brand image. In addition they have done a better job with creating buzz and advertising their brand. However Bisou Bisou has a competitive edge

over these brands because of their consistency in fit and strong sense of their customer. They continue to deliver a style and flair, that their loyal customers cannot find elsewhere.

Recently H&M have commenced a series of TV commercials in the United States. This

is something they have been doing in Europe for many years. Higher end competitor Express has also begun advertising with TV commercials. We believe that Bisou can benefit from looking towards their European competitors to see how they go about advertising. On the United States market, Forever 21 is now doing billboards, which is something typical for the United States, and not as commonly seen in Europe. However it still proves that now is the time to pursue a more intense and focused advertising and marketing plan for Bisou Bisou. By doing so, Bisou Bisou would be able to gain more market share from their competitors, and stand stronger in the ever changing fast paced world of fashion.

Current Selling Results

The best selling business within the Bisou Bisou assortment is their contemporary cloth-

ing. Within their small collection, they try to carry items for all occasions. Sophisticated tanks, embellished tees and denim are always featured on the table, and are considered “grab and go” pieces. “Date” tops, work wear and trend pieces are all displayed on racks. The assortment consists mainly of tops; however there is a good selection of different bottom options. The most popular ones are dark denim pieces and maxi skirts.

Special Occasion dresses are a close second when it comes to category successes. The

dress collections follow the season, light and charming for the spring and summer, and dressy and elegant for fall and the holidays. Most of the dress bodies are form fitting and slightly above the knee, which continue to sell season after season. Trendy dress silhouettes are added to the assortment every season, however they do not perform nearly as well as the tried and true bodies.

Future Outlooks and Trends

The trend in the industry is more fast fashion and the competition is increasing as MNG

by Mango entered JCPenney in fall 2010. Michele Bohbot is in the process of adding a new line to her portfolio. This will be a yoga line.

As the recession seems to be over, and with United States retail sales reaching post-

recessionary highs, the fashion industry shows an all-American sense which looks back at good old times, but also looks towards more exotic places on the planet, for inspiration and trends. While consumers are re-gaining optimism, money also flows more loosely from their pockets and they spend more on clothes and pay closer attention to details, diversity, and uniqueness, when shopping.

Executive Strategy

Bisou Bisou was a widely recognized brand in the 1990s with its signature â&#x20AC;&#x153;kissâ&#x20AC;? and the

form fitting fashions. After its move to JCPenney, in 2002, Bisou Bisou lost much of its image and popularity, and is no longer a widely recognized name. When surveyed, most people respond that they have not heard of Bisou Bisou. When the same question is asked to loyal JCPenney customers, most of them are not familiar with the brand either. Bisou Bisou offers the trend, low price point, and fit that customers are looking for, they just do not know where to find it.

The deal between JCPenney and Michele Bohbot is strictly a licensing agreement, and

all though Michele Bohbot still retains creative control over the brand, JCPenney necessitates occasional changes to the collections.

Bisou Bisou has branched out in several categories. It is essential for their continued suc-

cess, that they stand strong on their primary category; missy clothing, before expanding further. As their dresses, footwear, handbags, and accessories, fine jewelry, and swimwear are all license agreements, this should not affect the Bisou Bisou brand except by helping to re-gain recognition.

JCPenney uses price perception as a sales strategy. When Bisou Bisou hits the floor, an

automatic 30% is taken off the price, along with a big, red clearance sign. To bargain shoppers, this may be essential, but can also lower the quality perception to normal shoppers.

SOURCING & PRODUCTION STRATEGY 142

Packaging:

Each garment should be individual packaged in poly bags with small silicone bags to pro-

tect against moisture in each of the poly bags. One of each style would be folded and packaged and kept in office, while another identical package would be sent to the factory with detailed description, in order to ease the packing process and keep errors to a minimum. Before shipping the full order, a sample would be sent to the United States for approval. The label in the center back neck with the country of origin should be fully visible in the packing of the garments.

After being packed in polybags, the garments will be placed in corrugated boxes. For the

denim trench coat, which is more bulky, 12 styles will fit in a box. All other styles will be packed 2 dozen per box. The boxes will be placed on pellets, which will be shipped in 40 feet containers. Approximately 20,000 units will fit in one container.

Transportation strategy:

All styles are transported from the factories to the Port of Hong Kong

by trucks. From Hong Kong, the containers will ship with Maersk to the west coast of the United States (The Port of Los Angeles). Best route is Transpacific 2 (TP2), making four stops in Mainland China. If all goes smoothly and according to schedule, crossing the Pacific which will take 12 days. Maersk docks their ships in San Pedro, which is approximately 9 kilometers west-southwest of the Port of Long Beach.

In order to ease security and logistics of the port, Maersk will send the shipment

from the port via truck to the final destination. It will usually take an additional 10 days for clearing customs and inland transportation. Maersk will pick up container after the set time allowance for unloading.
