Impressions Q&A

Curators’ Note

While at first this event might seem like a simple final project for a Directing class, it is, in actuality, a first-of-it’s-kind collaboration between FIVE distinct cohorts: Ryanne Domingues’ Directing II Class, Robin Shane’s Contemporary Theatre Ensemble (CTE) Class, Yoshi Tanokura’s Scenic Painting Class, a variety of acting students, and students from Todd Loyd’s lighting design class. The importance of this collaboration can’t be overstated; each cohort has been engaged, enthusiastic, and, most importantly, gaining invaluable experience in producing a 10-minute play festival.

So, why is the show called Impressions? Outside of the paintings found onstage (which are replicas of famous professional paintings from the Impressionist Era, chosen in collaboration with the directors and painters for each piece), the CTE class chose this title because each of the pieces are impressions from our lives, taking us through the timespan of a single day. From early morning to late night, these plays give us glimpses of absurdist park benches, beautiful beach arguments, dangerous apartments, questionable office spaces, and cliffhanging restaurants. They are also the first impressions of our students’ potential, class projects that we hope taught them the skills necessary for a long and satisfying career in the arts.

We are incredibly proud of what they have accomplished. And we hope you enjoy the show!
