Help her find her voice, uncover her spark, and discover her passion. Who should attend

Our summer camp is designed to inspire Black girls and other girls of color ages 6 to 14 (or rising 1st to 9th grade) by promoting the joy in Black girls and other girls of color.

What to expect

Girls For A Change Camp Diva Leadership Academy is an affordable, full day, immersive summer camp that celebrates Black identity, culture and values. We aim to build each girl’s confidence and self esteem so that she can find her voice, uncover her spark, discover her passion and define her value.

Camp Diva Leadership Academy 2019

Through workshops, hands-on activities, and weekly field trips, we create leadership opportunities, cultivate a supportive community of peers and mentors, encourage social change and develop life skills all through traditional day camp experiences. These practices not only facilitate great experiences for our girls, they support and foster social emotional development, enhance their physical ability, promote creativity and encourage each girl to take risks and discover herself.

STEAM

Each day will focus on one concentration in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM). Through our

STEAM programming, girls will enjoy traditional camp activities and experience weekly themes focused on areas such as cultural awareness, visual arts, health and wellness, financial literacy, green living, entrepreneurship, character development, leadership skills, weekly field trips and so much more.

Along the way, they’ll build new friendships and create lasting memories.

When and Where

Camp Diva Leadership Academy will take place Monday through Friday, June 17– August 16, from 7:30am to 6:30pm at the Girls For A Change Branch located on 100 Buford Road in North Chesterfield, VA.

For girls unable to attend the entire camp due to scheduling conflicts or cost, Camp Diva offers two-week sessions as a shorter option to our traditional nineweek camp program. Signing up for both weeks is required in order for your daughter to get the full experience and participate in the camp. During those two weeks, your daughter will be able to explore and get a taste of all that Camp Diva has to offer. We have seen through the years, many of our twoweek campers request to stay the third week, which is why we offer a third week if space allows. We are happy to work with families on an individual basis.

Self-love is the best love but cannot be achieved without a healthy self-esteem. This week (and throughout camp) we will promote self-esteem through cultural awareness and connections designed to help girls acknowledge their talents and recognize ways to boost confidence, maintain healthy self-esteem and stay engaged in school and their community. This two-week series includes fun and healthy activities like rock climbing, exercise classes and healthy cooking sessions—all aimed at increasing the visibility of Black women in wellness spaces and building a healthy future. July 1–5 • July 8–12 (Closed July 4th–5th) WRITEFUL LESSONS

All children love seeing faces like theirs within the pages of their picture books. While for many years it was often challenging to find books starring Black girls and other children of color, there has fortunately been a large increase in the number of diverse books published in recent years. During these two weeks, we will read a number of children’s books that focus on positive messages about and for Black girls and girls of color. Each girl will have a grade appropriate daily writing and art activity related to each book we read. We will also spend time outside playing games that build positive friendship skills.

July 15–19 • July 22–26 FUNNY & FEARLESS

During these two weeks, the girls will jump into some seriously hilarious improv work. They will learn how to build exciting stories, create fascinating characters and present them through fun improv scenes and games. Each workshop is all about jumping in, having fun, playing hard, working together and finding their voices. Improv is the most fun you can have onstage. It’s fun, fast and each girl will discover that it’s easier than you think. Girls will gain confidence and resiliency, while focusing on listening, teambuilding, creativity and spontaneity. This program will end with a performance for parents and friends.

July 29–August 2 • August 5–16 OWNING IT

For two weeks, our instructors will introduce girls to the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and the key mindsets of entrepreneurial thinking. We have lots of fun, interactive sessions that will introduce girls to entrepreneurship and teach them to develop an entrepreneurial mindset that she can apply in and out of school, and for her lifetime. Near the end of the two weeks we will have our Annual Market Day where our girls get to put their new skillsets to work.

Each of your daughters have their own unique empowerment journey. Over the years, we’ve watched our girls make friends and create meaningful relationships. While friendship is a key component at Camp Diva, we also encourage our girls to see themselves as one of their own best friends. Each session encompasses selfawareness themes so we can meet girls where they are at and inspire them on their path to self-awareness and acceptance. During the two-week session, girls will take the time to discover their special gifts and talents and learn how they can apply them in and out of Camp Diva. Monday

July 1–5 • July 8–12 (Closed July 4th–5th) WRITE ON, GIRL

Girls will focus on topics relevant to the individual and shared experiences of Black girls. We will encourage participants to speak out through the art and power of writing by creating a collaborative book. Our philosophy is two-fold. We want the girls to take pride in learning new skills, while also learning to live cooperatively, exercise tolerance and build friendships with people from all walks of life. Each participant will find the opportunity to see her own strengths and find a greater sense of self through bonding with a community of sisters. Girls will have the opportunity to perform/read their final creation at our annual closing ceremony.

July 15–19 • July 22–26 SOLIDARITY IN ACTION

Girls do not have to wait until adulthood to create change, they can start engaging purposefully with their communities now. Our world needs their talents, motivation and creativity. The Solidarity In Action project will be led, created and implemented by the girls as a way to create positive social change for their communities and cultivate partnerships built on trust, equality and change.

“Remember to always stay open to new experiences and never let the doubters get in the way. You all are beautiful.” –Michelle Obama With increased safety, educational opportunities and recognition that women voices count, girls have more opportunity than ever to be problem solvers and contribute to building a more safe and sustainable world for everybody. But girls of color—especially Black girls—still face many challenges related to gender and race and often have to reconcile their own dreams with expectations of what they “should be and can have.” As part of this two-week session, the girls will read and reflect on Michelle Obama’s bestselling memoir Becoming with Lauren Mims. Lauren is a PhD Development Specialist and was formerly the Assistant Director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans (WHIEEAA) during the Obama Administration. Topic discussions will include creating supportive, affirming and loving environments; advocating for, adopting and enforcing school policies and accountability practices that recognize the brilliance of Black girls; addressing bullying, harassment and discrimination; caring for your own mental health and well-being. Capital One DAY PASS for MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS ONLY Friday, June 21 • 8:30am–4:30pm Girls For A Change is excited to provide a free Invitation Day to attend Capital One’s “Coders” program. Coders is a program provided by Capital One to expose middle school students to technology by partnering with schools and community leaders to foster a focus in software engineering. This summer, Capital One is partnering with GFAC to expose more girls to technology as a way to reduce the gender gap in technology occupations. The goal is to spark interest in different kinds of technology, show them varied careers within the field and connect them with professionals in technology careers.

While the event is free, we do require a $10 registration fee to hold your space. The $10 registration will be returned if your daughter attends and completes the day. Lunch is included and transportation to the event is provided. If you are late for pick up, your registration fee will not be returned. Drop off at 7:30am and pick up at 5:30pm at Girls For A Change. Coders will take place at Capital One Richmond Campus (15000 Capital One Drive, Richmond, VA).

Only 60 spots that will fill quickly. Register on Girls For A Change website. July 1–5 • July 8–12 (Closed July 4th–5th) GIRLS RISING WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY

A healthy, safe and supportive learning environment enables participants, adults and even the school as a system to learn in powerful ways. Such an environment promotes innovation, inquiry and risk taking. Also, such an environment reinforces and enhances the leadership capacity. Research shows people who have strong relationships with a partner, family or close friends are happier, healthier and live longer. Unfortunately, we often take our closest relationships for granted. Maintaining them takes conscious attention and effort and there are things we can all do that make a difference. For the next two weeks, each girl will learn the importance of family relationships and friendships for young people.

July 15–19 • July 22–26 SHINING THINGS FOR SOCIAL CHANGE

Together, the girls from rising 6th and 7th grade will team up with local jewelry makers and learn to design their own jewelry. Girls will get to exercise their creativity using recycled materials to prove that “jewelry” can be a tool for social innovation and that a simple piece of metal can be truly inspiring. In addition to learning about social change and jewelry design, we will learn about emergency preparedness and survival skills.

July 29–August 2 • August 5–16 GIRLS CRUSHIN’ IT!

This empowering two weeks is designed for our middle school girls. Girls will learn about the entrepreneurial mindset and learn the highs and lows of starting a business. Girls will learn how to create their own product lines, learn business skills and hold a pop-up store. We offer transformational, virtual and in-person workshops designed to inspire girls to become innovative change makers and engage with instructors and customers. Participants develop creative capacity, entrepreneurial confidence and acquire the necessary skills to solve real problems through entrepreneurship.

Our fun trips and themed activities offers lots to explore. This culturally enriching experience offers girls a taste of a little bit of everything—with a big impact. As girls get older, they need a space of their own to connect and develop. To make this space, comfortable and memorable, we strive to make sure each girl gains self-confidence, tools for healthy living, social-emotional literacy, avenues to economic opportunity, authentic community, cultural engagement, creative expression and nourishing connections with peers and adults. You can sign your daughter up for just two weeks during the summer or sign up for all nine sessions! Camp Diva provides lunch for participants every Monday. Rising 9th grade girls, along with an Adult Sponsor, are invited to the annual YADAPP kick-off conference! The Youth Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Project (YADAPP) is a unique, year-long peer leadership opportunity fostering the prevention of high school substance use that kicks off during the annual conference. During the week-long kick off conference, participants attend topical workshops, hear from internationally-known motivational speakers, learn peer leadership and prevention best practices and develop a strategic plan to address alcohol or drug use among their peers. After YADAPP, Girls For A Change will encourage the girls to become involved in keeping their communities alcohol and drug free. In addition, participants discuss issues young adults face in school and create customized Strategies to Act Now (STAN) Plans to deter alcohol and drug use. The girls will be encouraged and supported to present and implement these plans upon their return or during the following school year.

July 29–August 2 • August 5–16 GIRL START SOMETHING!

GFAC wants to help develop the next generation of innovators and changemakers through entrepreneurial learning. Specialty Camps • Creative Industry Rising 10th grade–12th grade girls only Did you know that across all fields in the Design/ Fashion industry, just 3% of practitioners are Black while 73% are white? Among the many limitations to design careers that girls of color face, lack of funding for design and arts education in public school systems is first in line. Exposure to design is critical to excite potential designers and bring a more diverse perspective to an industry that so clearly shapes our youth and culture. Girls For A Change’s Creative Industry Tour is an attempt to tackle the racism that is entrenched in luxe fashion. No matter how much regressive and prejudiced practices are still prevalent in the industry, our girls still want to be included due to their love of fashion. They want to bring skills, new perspectives, and change attitudes on and off of the runway.

12

Camp Diva Leadership Academy 2019

Our Creative Industry Camp runs for two weeks. During those two weeks, we will expose the girls to different aspects of the creative process, give them a glimpse into the fashion and design industry and share some of the secrets of fashion trend forecasting and interior design. The Creative Industry Camp provides exposure to multidisciplinary design opportunities. These experiences invite Black girls and other girls of color to consider design and STEAM careers.

Week one

Week one will be held in Richmond where we will focus on shoe design. Our local partner, former VCU Arts’ Associate Professor Donna Reamy, and a new collaborator Tanita Gray, a California-based African American who designs shoes, have planned five days (June 24th–28th) of learning, experiences, exposure and fun for the girls participating in the program this year. Prior to their departure for New York City, the girls will complete a shoe design course developed by Ms. Gray. Their participation in the course will be supported by Ms. Reamy and Ms. Gray.

Week two

During week two, we will head to NYC for an intensive week of networking and workshops. This is the week for participants to build a network of support to advance their opportunities for continuing their education and/or employment. We will visit Fashion Snoops, Target, Kate Spade and more. The girls will also be exposed to fashion journalism and will simulate reporting their exploration of the upcoming shoe trends as journalists. We will continue our exploration of footwear supplies with a visit to Saks 5th Ave’s extensive shoe collection, along with stops at Brother Versailles and the Brooklyn Shoe space. The girls will experience a presentation on technical packages and costing followed by a discussion and design presentation.

Scholarships are available for girls who need financial assistance thanks to our partner, Target. Interested in enrolling yourself or your girl in the Creative Industry Fashion Camp? Register on the Girls For A Change website.

Field Trips

Every two weeks, Camp Diva has an exciting theme, which many of our activities and special events are based on. These activities range from field trips with amazing destinations to skilled and talented guests and presentations. Many of our field trips and special activities are offered at no extra charge, but some do have a low fee. Please make sure to pay attention to emails and reminders for upcoming event dates and changes to ensure your daughter doesn’t miss out.

Swimming

Swimming lessons are a rite of passage for most children. But race complicates the splashes, water sports, health benefits, laughter and memories in swimming pools. We encourage every girl at Camp Diva to travel with us to a local “Y”, where they get quality swim lessons from every level. Our goal is to sharpen her skills, teach water safety and of course cool off a little. The cost is an additional $8 per week. On days we go to the pool, please make sure your daughter has a fresh towel, swim cap, underwear and pool shoes. It is preferred that she wear her swimsuit under her clothes that day.

Lunch

Food is crucial to a great camp experience and can be a prime concern for parents and participants alike. One way to keep every girl energized and happy is having a quality food service operation. If you ask around, you will hear firsthand how good our food is at Girls For A Change. We want to make sure our girls have lots of options to choose from so they get the nutrition they need. We spend a great deal

of time planning all the menus, preparing food from our own organic garden, providing cooking classes and partnering with Eat Smart to help select the best food choices and make items available that promote healthy choices. We do not provide breakfast; however, every girl is encouraged to eat a healthy breakfast before coming to camp. She is also welcome to bring breakfast and eat between 7:30–9am. For lunch, we typically have a salad bar with lots of choices in addition to hot items and at least two vegetables. We offer gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options and have alternatives for those with allergies. Girls are encouraged to try new things and can go back for as many servings as they like. Lunch is $24 per week. Please check the calendar for any updates in the meal schedule. Girls who opt out of our lunch program must bring their own lunches; however, please only pack one lunch per day as storage is limited, and food can spoil. After lunch, we will discard all leftover food, used food packaging and paper bags. Girls cannot reuse packaging because it could contaminate other food and cause foodborne illness. Girls For A Change would like to do everything we can to make the center as safe as possible. Because girls in our center have been diagnosed with nut and seafood allergies, we have declared Camp Diva a nut and seafood safe zone. Being exposed to a food you are allergic to can produce severe reactions, which is why we ask families to do everything possible to ensure that any food sent (including lunches and special snacks) for their child does not contain any nut or seafood products.

Closing Ceremony

Save the date to celebrate the girls! August 16th • 6pm–8pm All girls must wear an all white dress with nude, metallic or white sandal shoes. Girls can invite up to four guests. Every family is required to donate one dish. A form will be sent out for your family to sign up.

Lunch from Eat Smart

We have partnered with local meal delivery service Eat Smart to offer healthy, kid-tested lunches for $8 per day per girl on Monday–Friday. Eat Smart makes a variety of healthy meals that are not only nutritious but delicious and LOVED by girls here at Camp Diva. Learn more about them at eatsmartnow.com. *Note: A brown paper bag lunch on Fridays will be provided for families who register for the lunch program.

Orientation Dates

We highly recommend all participants attend our orientation. Parents can bring all documents needed to register for camp, learn how to work ProCare (our tuition assistance program), ask questions and learn about the exciting adventures we have planned for camp. When: Saturday, June 8 Creative Industry Camp: 10:30am Rising 1st–5th: 12:30pm Rising 6th–9th: 2:30pm Where: Girls For A Change 100 Buford Road, North Chesterfield VA

Payment Process

We care about your welfare and strive to provide tools that facilitate administrative processes. That is why we are excited to offer you the convenience of automatic tuition payments through Tuition Express. Tuition Express is a fully integrated payment processing solution developed by the nation’s number one selling child care management system, ProCare Software. Your payment will be safely and securely processed by Tuition Express, giving you peace of mind that your tuition has been paid on time. It’s easy to enroll and even easier to participate.

What to wear (and not to wear)

Girls should dress comfortably and come to camp wearing socks and comfortable, closed-toed sneakers. Shorts should be fingertips to thighs. Each girl should bring a light sweater or jacket as it can get cold inside some of the places where we will have field trips. Each girl will receive one Camp Diva shirt that they are required to wear on Friday field trip days. It is recommended that you purchase a second shirt as a backup. No spaghetti straps, crop tops or back outs. Every girl will need an all white dress for the photoshoot (by July 30 for the photoshoot) and white, clear or nude shoes for the closing ceremony.

What to bring

Girls will need to bring the following items to camp: Reusable bottle of water with her name on it Yoga mat Hat with a brim Becoming by Michelle Obama–Rising 6th– Rising 9th only Bug spray For pool days, you will be notified ahead of time. Your daughter will need to have a fresh towel, swim cap, underwear and pool shoes.
