Every December brings a new crop of holiday movies, but there is something very comforting about old favorites like Babes in Toyland. This timeless tale of nursery rhymes come to life has been remade several times over the decades, with each new version offering a slightly different take on the original story. Based on the 1903 operetta by Victor Herbert, the Babes in Toyland movies imagine Toyland as the home of nursery rhyme characters like Mother Goose and Little Bo Peep, who live alongside original characters like the villainous Barnaby. A miserly old man, Barnaby uses an overdue mortgage to pressure a young nursery rhyme heroine into marrying him, promising to forgive the mortgage as a wedding present. Our heroes must find a way to stop Barnaby so that the heroine can marry her true love. Since Toyland is the source of Christmas presents, the heroes usually participate in toy production and call on an army of wooden soldiers during the final showdown with Barnaby and his forces of evil. If you don’t already have a favorite version, consider picking one of these for a nice evening in this holiday season: 1934: the Laurel and Hardy595 version Putnam Pike, 1st Floor Also known as March of the Wooden Soldiers,RIthe02828 1934 version of Babes in Toyland stars Greenville, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy as bumbling brothers Stannie Dum and Ollie Dee. While the main plot consists of Barnaby’s efforts to separate Bo Peep from her beloved Tom Tom (the Piper’s son), the film is primarily a vehicle for Laurel and Hardy’s double-act. Between Laurel’s hapless mix-ups and Hardy’s perpetual exasperation, the pair can hardly get out of their own way long enough to help the young lovers. The cheesy effects only enhance the lighthearted tone, which in turn balances out the scarier moments. The final 595 Putnam Pike, 1st Floor battle between Barnaby’s nightmarish Bogeymen and the wooden soldiers has enough Greenville, RI 02828 slapstick to keep the little ones laughing until our heroes secure Bo Peep and Tom Tom’s happily ever after. 1961: the Disney musical Disney remade Babes in Toyland as a colorful, musical adventure in 1961, with former Mousketeer Annette Funicello as Contrary Mary, Tommy Sands as Tom Piper, Ed Wynn as the Toymaker, and Ray Bolger as Barnaby. While the 1934 version included a few songs from the original operetta, this version consists almost entirely of musical set-pieces, with a full complement of beautifully costumed singers and dancers. This version is even more kid-friendly than the 1934 movie, removing the Bogeymen from the story and turning the previously sinister Barnaby into a mincing, pussyfooting villain. Barnaby’s henchmen even resemble Laurel and Hardy, and their persistent bungling ensures that Barnaby’s evil plans never actually get off the ground. 1986: the Wizard of Oz mash-up This made-for-TV movie takes its cues from The Wizard of Oz (1939) by sending our girl-next-door heroine Lisa (Drew Barrymore) to Toyland via a weather mishap (in this case, a blizzard). Once in Toyland, Lisa meets up with nursery rhyme characters who resemble her own friends and family, like Mary Contrary (Jill Schoelen) and Jack Nimble (Keanu Reeves). Richard Mulligan mugs it up as Barnaby, who, in this version, lives inside a giant bowling ball; and Pat Morita appears as the benevolent and beloved Toy Master.
