Who are OhH DeER?
The brand was founded in 2011 by Jamie Mitchell and Mark Callaby, Jamie had studied Architecture and Mark, Illustration. The idea came about while on holiday on the Isle of Wight (where all good ideas come about, of course). The project was originally going to fill two days a week Mark didn’t work, and as Jamie had just got a job at an Architectural practice he was going to help out where possible. As it turns out, Jamie didn’t enjoy Architecture as much as he thought, and missed all the creativity of University; namely his love of drawing. Realising he didn’t want to go back to University to study something he wasn’t overly keen on, Jamie made plans to take Ohh Deer full time. He began by pushing it on social networks, scooping up a collection of very talented illustrators and creating a series of products. From the very beginning Mark and Jamie endeavoured to make Ohh Deer a means to promote their illustrators and not just a brand.
Their creative roots had identified it was very difficult to make a living from freelance work - and other brands seem to take a disproportionate amount of money from the sale of illustrators work. All Ohh Deer illustrators takes a high percentage of the profit from each of their sales. The brand was launched in November 2011 and their first stockist was the alumni shop in Kingston Upon Thames. Since then they’ve gone from having just the two illustrators to over 35. They’ve worked on collaborative projects for the likes of Universal Music and have found a home in lots of galleries including the Tate Modern and the Design Museum. Currently Ohh Deer products are on sale in over 15 countries. That’s all just a year after the launch, are you going to be part of their adventure this year?
