We are pleased to present our annual Living In Wantagh and Seaford, a special supplement to the Wantagh Herald and the Seaford Herald.

Those of us who live here know Wantagh and Seaford are wonderful, diverse places. Our annual guide is a testament to their post-pandemic resurgence. Not only does it include vital information about Wantagh and Seaford, but it also gives you a look at some of the people and places that represent the best of these communities.

Think of Living In Wantagh and Seaford as an “owner’s manual” for newcomers and longtime residents alike. As you’ll see in these pages, there’s an amazingly rich social fabric here. An abundance of services and organizations are available to residents. No matter what your interests, age, religion or needs, both communities have much to offer.

Wantagh is home to Wantagh Park, one of the jewels of the county park system since 1961. Consisting of 111 acres, the park’s waterfront location offers numerous opportunities for recreation, along with seating areas that allow visitors to relax and enjoy the magnificent view.

And in Seaford, Cedar Creek Park is another popular spot. It’s a sprawling environment that hosts a variety of activities, such as handball, basketball, softball, playgrounds, and even a dog run. Located on Merrick Road, the park has provided outdoor fun for those living in Wantagh and Seaford since 1975.

Whether you attended Wantagh High School, Seaford High School or MacArthur High School, both towns are vibrant and welcoming places that you want to live in and take care of.

Living In Wantagh and Seaford is published in cooperation with the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce and Seaford Chamber of Commerce. We are honored to mark another year as the official publication for these chambers.

We hope that you find this edition useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading the Wantagh Herald and Seaford Herald 52 weeks per year.

a message from the seaford Chamber president

Welcome to Seaford, where you will always have something to do, regardless of your age.

Why not start your day at one of the many parks we have in town? Cedar Creek Park was named "Best Playground of Long Island" by the Long Island Press years ago, and was judged by News 12 Long Island viewers as the best on Long Island.

While you're there, enjoy the paths that can be used for walking, jogging and bicycling — or even spend the day rollerskating. You can also  head to Jones Beach or Tobay Beach using the paths in Cedar Creek Park. Want to play pickleball, baseball or take a trip in a kayak? If so, then head to Seamans Neck Park where all the fields have been renovated, and are ready for a family day of fun.

If the family is in town, head to Tackapausha

Preserve and enjoy the historic and beautiful 84acre sanctuary of oak forests, ponds, streams, small mammals and scores of bird species — all of which

can be viewed via five miles of clearly marked trails.

If walking and biking aren’t your thing, head to the Seaford Public Library. Programs for young children, teens and adults are endless. Bring your friends and family to play mahjong, read a book, take a course, or attend an outside concert.  You also can enjoy the art wall on display from our very own  Seaford residents. There is a program for everyone at our public library.

After your day is complete in the Seaford parks, you can enjoy one of the many restaurants and bars that are in town. You even have the option of dining at the waterfront. There is always something to do in this amazing community, and the Seaford Chamber of Commerce is always willing to support and guide you.

We at the Seaford Chamber of Commerce encourage your support, guidance and commitment to keep Seaford a community united in spirit, hope and togetherness.

Seaford Pride!

High school students

get a good feeling from helping

One of the many components of a public school education is learning how to be a productive citizen. Performing community service? That’s the backbone of that very concept.

The student council at Seaford High School gives back to the community through its 14 members from all grade levels, as well as its two faculty advisors — all who coordinate multiple civic-oriented events throughout the academic year.

Like the 9/11 memorial ceremony held at the Seamans Neck Road campus. The teen future leaders could be found that day setting up chairs, and distributing everything attendees would need — from event pamphlets to flags and candles.

But that’s just a single example. They also help those in need through the council’s annual Thanksgiving food drive, where they solicit donations of food from all over the community. The teens also collected gift cards from generous Seaford businesses before delivering all of it to families within the school district just in time for the feast to start.

Continuing that path of giving back, the student council also runs a toy drive — yet another task the young men and women call on their neighbors to help, and where they get plenty of community spirit in return. So many in the Seaford community donate toys, which students then deliver to Head Start programs,

hospitals and other places where children may not get the kind of holidays their more fortunate peers might.

Organizing these activities takes time, and the student council gets an early start meeting almost literally at the crack of dawn every Wednesday, and more frequently when a planned event draws closer.

“Seeing how happy all the kids are when they get the toys makes all the early morning meetings worth it,” said Isabella Strippoli, a Seaford High senior, who leads the student council as its president.

The work they do is an inspiration to others in the school — even if they are not on the student council, advisor Tania Cintorino says. Their efforts have a ripple effect throughout the student body who see all the good work the council is doing — like food and toy collections, as well as blood drives.

“We work hard, but it’s rewarding in the end,” Strippoli said.

Her club secretary, Angelina Fernandez,

added that being a part of something that benefits others is a wonderful feeling.

“It feels nice coming home after the food drives and the toy drives and the blood drives, and knowing that you gave back to the community,” she said.

“I really liked helping people, so I knew that I wanted to do something with helping people when I’m older. So that changed me into really wanting to be involved in my school more. That changed me to really want to just help people overall, because I know how good it feels, and how good it is to be involved in the community.”

Top right photo: It’s not just learning how to govern, but also how to lead by example. That’s exactly what Seaford High School’s student council advisors Shari Raduazzo, left, and Tania Cintorino work to instill in their young future leaders.

Left photo: Kiernan Calderaro and Angelina Fernandez — officers with the Seaford High School student council — unpack candles for the school’s annual 9/11 event. Bottom right photo: They are a group that thrives on giving back to the community they call home. Seaford High School’s student council includes, from left, Kiernan Calderaro as vice president, Angelina Fernandez as secretary, Isabella Strippoli as president, and Megan Bloom as treasurer.

In many ways, putting out a newspaper each week is an interactive process. We need your participation to do our job, so we offer you — our readers and partners — a reminder of how and when to reach us.

To tell us what’s going on in your community, or news of upcoming events sponsored by civic, service, religious or community organizations, the deadline is 10 a.m. the Friday prior to publication. Notices are printed free of charge, and should be emailed to cshaw@liherald.com.

We also welcome the news of your family life, your business life and your social life. We accept, at no charge, obituaries and Neighbors in the News items, including awards, honors, births, graduations, marriages and promotions.

We value your opinions, and provide a forum for them in our popular Letters to the Editor space. Letters should be emailed to cshaw@liherald.com.

at the Wantagh Giving Garden

The Rev. Ron Garner is on a mission to end hunger. And he has no plans to slow down.

The pastor of Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church for more than a dozen years, Gardner operates what he calls the Wantagh Giving Garden from his own backyard, delivering fresh produce regularly to any food pantry that needs it. He also organizes weekly food drives.

It’s all part of his efforts to address the lack of access to healthy food in the community. It motivated him to develop a relationship with the Freeport Emergency Food Center, where he quickly noticed a lack of fresh produce at the pantry.

Garner changed that — not with his hands, at first. But instead with his feet. He walked tour from Montauk to Wantagh in 2011 — a journey of nearly 90 miles — with the goal of raising $1,111 in cash and 1,111 pounds of food. He

Ron Garner and his family couldn’t keep managing it on their own, Laurie Nunez — a member of Garner’s Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church — took over as leader of the Wantagh Giving Garden in Garner’s backyard. achieved that goal, and then some — ending up with three times the donations he sought.

Knowing there was a great community around him willing to help, Garner created the Wantagh Giving Garden the next year. At first, it was just him, wife Maureen, and stepdaughter Jessica doing all the work. But the garden — which operates between May and November — soon became difficult for just three people to manage.

Not long after, Laurie Nunez — a congregant from Garner’s church — took over the garden, getting help from Boy Scout Troop 96, as well as from Jim Silberger and Mark Engleman of the Kiwanis Club of Wantagh.

Nunez and Silberger not only shared great opinions about the garden, but Garner, too. They call the pastor a caring, selfless individual who understands the importance and need of helping others.

The garden’s produce is harvested on Sunday, and Garner brings the food — which

has previously included cantaloupe, potatoes, tomatoes, kale and green beans — down to local pantries.

“Increasing the accessibility of fresh fruits and vegetables at local food pantries is an excellent way to ensure that food-insecure families meet their health needs,” said Christine Going, an Island Harvest Food Bank board member.

Although he is now a grandfather of five in his 70s, Garner has no plans to end his good-faith work anytime soon. He is driven by lessons he learned as a child in the small town of Greensboro, Indiana — a farming region where poverty was simply a way of life.

Garner recalls members of the church bringing food from their gardens to donate to those in need. The best part, he said, was that nobody was stigmatized or embarrassed — people simply helped each other.

And he hopes to see more of that on Long Island and in Wantagh itself — neighbors helping neighbors.

Circle of Hope helps

A breast cancer diagnosis is devastating. And at the Chabad Center for Jewish Life — which serves the Jewish community of Bellmore, Merrick and Wantagh — the Cindy Knoll Circle of Hope and its subsidiary, Dress for Recovery, provides emotional support and hands-on help to patients and their families coping with breast cancer and other illnesses.

Circle of Hope was co-founded in 2012 by Cindy Knoll, who’s name the nonprofit now bears. Knoll died in August 2021 from brain cancer, at 56.

At the time of the organization’s founding, the wife of Chabad Center rabbi Shimon Kramer, Chanie, said the Chabad saw the need for there to be a center for outreach and support for breast cancer patients.

“Unfortunately,” she said, “there are so many people in this area dealing with the disease. Whatever they need, we want to be there for them.”

Today, Circle of Hope unites the community

and brings hope and encouragement to those who need it most. It offers several programs, and some highlights include prevention and awareness seminars, meal delivery to homes for those undergoing treatment, financial assistance, support groups and a wig bank.

Dress for Recovery, which is part of Circle of Hope, was founded in 2020 by Loraine Alderman, who was undergoing breast cancer treatment the year before. The clothing bank provides large shirts with ample space for surgical drains, as well as various zippers for doctors and nurses to access chest ports for chemotherapy.

“There’s not one store in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut where you can walk in and buy this type of clothing,” Alderman said.

“They’re only available online, and they’re expensive. We are the only place where people

can come and get everything — free of charge.”

Last year, Dress for Recovery also received a donation of seatbelt covers from Evening Star Quilters, a Mineola-based nonprofit quilting organization. The seatbelt covers help protect a raw chemotherapy port, which are attached to a main artery in the chest and require a lot of protection.

“We tried to figure out how to make something good out of what was going on,” Alderman said. “It’s really about paying things forward and just trying to help other people.”

All services in Circle of Hope and Dress for Recovery are free, confidential, and offered to everyone, regardless of religious beliefs. For more information, email circleofhope@ chabadjewishllife.org, or call (516) 833-3057, Ext. 104.

B’Nai’s garden an anchor for many

There have now been four seasons of harvest at the Garden of Temple B’nai Torah, which its team of volunteers celebrated with a garden party, bringing everyone from Bellmore, Merrick, East Meadow, Wantagh, and Seaford, together to honor the hard work for a good cause.

A number of years ago, Rona and Bob Kauffman attended a class in the synagogue led by Rabbi Daniel Bar-Nahum and the Rev. Mark Genzsler. Bar-Nahum was their rabbi at Temple B’Nai Torah, while Genzsler was the spiritual leader of nearby St. Francis Episcopal Church in Bellmore.

The two compared interfaith scriptures, and during all of that, the subject of the garden at St. Francis came up.

Intrigued, the Kauffmans met with Susan Salem — the garden’s creator and coordinator — and would eventually become regular volunteers there, where parishioners grow fresh produce to fight local hunger.

Salem and the Kauffmans wanted to bring that effort to Temple B’nai Torah, and this interest grew stronger when the temple’s youth group was brought to the St. Francis Garden in 2019 for Sukkot.

A year later, when the pandemic hit, B’nai Torah took action: Salem and the Kauffmans

knew they should go forward with their plan immediately, since food pantries were struggling.

It turned out B’nai Torah had a playground no longer in use, so that spot was chosen for the garden.

There, sandboxes became garden beds for growing vegetables, and harvested with love for the sole purpose of going to those who needed it most.

Still busy with her own garden, Salem

continued to lend her skills, which were passed down from her grandfather. While she brings her gardening prowess to the project, Rona Kauffman, a co-chair of the temple’s social action committee, coordinates all of the volunteer efforts.

It was important to ensure that although the garden was at the temple, it was truly a community garden, Salem said.

B’nai Torah did this by following in the footsteps of St. Francis, which named its efforts the Garden at St. Francis instead of the St. Francis Garden. The dogooders used that inspiration to call their operation the Garden at Temple B’nai Torah.

You don’t have to be a member of the synagogue to volunteer or contribute to the garden. Or even to benefit from its bounty.

The vegetables grown in the garden include artichokes, sweet peas, radishes, cucumbers, Swiss chard, lettuce, beets, turnips, onions, garlic, lettuce and carrots.

The temple typically donates its produce to the Island Harvest warehouse in Uniondale as well as the Bethany House of Nassau County, Hempstead village’s Community Solidarity, and various homes of synagogue members.

Jewish War Veterans help community

If you ask Gary Glick what plagues modern military veterans most, he’d describe the number of people who do not know or understand what benefits they are entitled to after service.

Helping veterans — whether they live in or outside of the immediate community — is the mission of the Jewish War Veterans. Especially at Post 652 — which serves Bellmore, Merrick, Wantagh, Seaford, East Meadow and surrounding communities — which has made an effort to remain active on community issues. Members can often be seen at veteran events, and well as helping Boy Scout troops complete community service projects.

Just last year, for example, the group helped an aspiring Eagle Scout restore a World War I Memorial in Merrick.

Although not well-known, the national Jewish War Veterans group has been around since 1896. Glick, Post 652’s commander, spends a lot of time dispelling myths like Jews never served in conflicts like the Civil War. In fact, some 8,000 Jewish men served. On both sides.

“Our biggest concern is to get the word out that we exist,” said Ed Freeberg, a lifetime member of the organization. “The Jewish War

Veterans has existed for about 127 years, and very few people know about it. So, our job is to do a tremendous amount of outreach.”

Post members are often seen at commemorative events on Veterans Day and Memorial Day, and in public schools. Members help conduct ceremonies for Jewish soldiers and establish working relationships with local rabbis.

In the past, Glick has responded to calls from

veterans dealing with mental health crises from untreated post-traumatic stress disorder, and worked with additional organizations to help provide housing or food to veterans in need.

The more outreach the group can provide, the better off veterans are.

“There’s 130,000 of us out here” on Long Island, Glick said, ‘and I’ll tell you right now, there’s

maybe a handful that know what’s going on.”

Despite the seriousness of their cause, the group also takes part in holiday celebrations as well as milestone birthdays for veterans. And while the efforts of the group consist of diligent, hard work for everyone involved, it is truly a labor of love.
