We are pleased to present our annual Living In Oceanside and Island Park, a special supplement to the Oceanside/Island Park Herald. Those of us who live here know Oceanside and Island Park are wonderful, diverse places. Our annual guide is a testament to their post-pandemic resurgence. Not only does it include vital information about Oceanside and Island Park, but it also gives you a look at some of the people and places that represent the best of these communities. Think of Living In Oceanside and Island Park as an Stuart “owner’s manual” for newcomers and longtime residents Richner alike. As you’ll see in these pages, there’s an amazingly rich social fabric here. An abundance of services and organizations are available to residents. No matter what your interests, age, religion or needs, these communities have much to offer. Oceanside and Island Park are home to multiple scenic spots, including Masone Beach, the Marine Study Area and Shell Creek Park, where everyone can enjoy the outdoors and take part in many seasonal activities. Folks gather at Shell Creek Park to enjoy basketball, paddle ball and tennis. The Marine Study Area is a bird watcher's delight, where you’ll find more than 280 species of birds. And Masone Beach is the gem of Island Park village. Residents love the sunsets and sunrises, beach walks and yoga, along with annual events such as the Labor Day concert and fireworks show, and the Island Park Kiwanis Steak and Lobster bake. Oceanside is defined by its close-knit community, and as such, created Oceanside Unified, which brings local organizations together to organize events. Oceanside Unified comprises representatives from several community groups, including the Kiwanis club, the Chamber of Commerce and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. And it's looking to add even more local groups. And, of course, the Friedberg JCC is a long-standing community partner. Serving the South Shore for more than 60 years, it provides social and educational programs, plus vitally needed services for individuals of all ages. It is where friends, neighbors and families come together — even discover their Jewish identity — be themselves, and just have fun. In both Oceanside and Island Park, the libraries are an active community hub, offering many engaging activities year-round. Both towns also benefit from the Island Park Theatre Group; its shows are popular with all ages and provide an opportunity for local performers to shine. Living In Oceanside and Island Park is published in cooperation with the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce. We are honored to mark another year as the chamber’s official publication. We hope that you find this issue useful and informative, and that you enjoy reading the Oceanside/Island Park Herald 52 weeks per year.

Mayor's Message Dear Friends: The Village of Island Park continues its renaissance with new local business, infrastructure upgrades and smart growth! The board and I are so excited for all we have planned in the coming year! Masone Beach has seen record attendance, with so many of our young neighbors participating in programs throughout the week. We look forward to our holiday events — including Easter, Hanukkah, Christmas and Labor Day. The summer is a great time to shop local, eat at one of our great restaurants, and catch a concert at one of our local parks. As you probably realize, our community has been the focal point of many resiliency, improvement and infrastructure projects — collaborating with partners in government to create a more sustainable Island Park. We are also in the

process of completing a critical mitigation at the Island Park Fire House, home to our bravest — men and women who work 24/7/365 to keep 11558 safe. In 2024, the Island Park Fire Department will celebrate 100 years of dedicated service to this beautiful village. They have much planned to celebrate their first century, and I look forward to joining them and all of you to show our love and gratitude. The Village of Island Park may be small, but it has a big heart and we’ve battled through hurricanes, tropical storms, flooding, the pandemic, and more. I want to thank our village workforce for moving our community forward each day. Our future is bright so stick around — visit, play, eat, drink, take in our parks and beaches, and have fun!

All the best, Michael G. McGinty Mayor

Mary Joesten does her part in feeding the hungry By Janet Prete Mary Joesten has a talent for seeing a need and filling the vacuum with her own brand of faith and action. And she won’t let the fact she’s pushing 90 slow her down — especially as she works to feed the hungry across Long Island. It all started in 1968 when she founded a food pantry and a crisis center for alcoholics in Jamaica. She registered the pantry as a nonprofit called Faith Mission. The Oceanside resident makes helping sound so simple. When she wanted to start the pantry, Mary called all her friends, and people came and joined her and “just did it.” She found a church and a pastor who had a small community in need, and he allowed her to run the pantry out of the church. After more than a decade, Mary received an invitation from a monsignor in Freeport to run a pantry there, where she could serve lunch. From Freeport, she moved the pantry to Elmont. Since 2020, Mary has run the pantry out of Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Mineola Volunteers pick up food seven days a week from Island Harvest, Long Island Cares, Whole Foods, and various bagel shops. In addition, the pantry gets donations from Chaminade High School food drives, other Mineola schools, St. Anne’s parish in New Hyde Park, the Rotary Club

12

Mineola and Garden City, Dalton Funeral Home, and private donations. Even with all the donations, Mary says it’s not enough to feed all the families that show up. Faith Mission often has to buy more to make up the deficit. Volunteers arrive at the church on Thursdays to set up food giveaway, which takes place on Saturday. They also sort clothing, toy donations and school supplies.

Several hundred bags of school supplies, for instance, were given out at the beginning of September. On Saturday, shopping bags full of nonperishable food are lined up near the door of the church hall and on tables in an all-purpose room further inside. Meat from the pantry’s three refrigerators and produce are put into the bags at the last minute. In addition, there are portable metal shelves filled with more items such as peanut butter, pet food and fruit cups. Mary says it will all be gone by the end of the day. The pantry opens at 8:30 a.m., and all the food is given out by about 11. About a year ago, the pantry was serving 50 families, but now they serve more than 300. Some people show up on Friday night to put down a chair on the sidewalk and save a place

in line, which is often halfway down the block at 7 a.m. In addition to the people who show up in-person, several bags are set-aside for homebound clients. “Mineola, in all my years, has been the most generous and welcoming community,” Mary says. And while she won’t express this herself, Long Island may actually say the same of her.

Top photo: Mary Joesten’s organization has been feeding Long Island and even parts of Queens since 1968. Faith Mission has been working out of Lutheran Church of Our Saviour for the past three years, but Mary Joesten’s organization has been feeding Long Island and even parts of Queens since 1968.

Middle photo: Matthew Duggan is one of many volunteers who go out and help Faith Mission feed the hungry from a church in Mineola each week. Those in need start lining up as early as the day before, but the pantry runs out of donations within a couple hours on Saturdays.

Giving the lasting gift of knowledge By Farrah Salazar It could be a little bit of “Rainbow Fish” or “Where the Wild Things Are.” Or maybe it’s even “Good Night, Long Island.” There are so many great children’s books out there, and a group of senior citizens in Island Park want to make sure our youngest minds are exposed to all of them. How? They’re reading to kindergarten students at Francis X. Hegarty Elementary School as a part of the new district initiative called the Senior Citizen Reading Partners Program. Five seniors volunteer for an hour in the school’s two kindergarten classes. They sit and read with a small group of kids who learned new sounds and words, before finishing their time together with each student completing a writing prompt. At the end of the year, the students were said to be reading at or above grade level. “This partnership and shared experience are so important for both our students and senior citizens,” said Francis X. Hegarty kindergarten teacher Mary McDonald, who .pitched the program idea to district administrators in the first place. She got the idea after attending a

having a trusted elder of the community witness that reading growth is said to aid that progress. But the coronavirus pandemic did actually help in this particular case. Island Park schools superintendent Vincent Randazzo said for many years, it was tricky to invite people into the schools. The Senior Citizens Read Partners program was the perfect opportunity to start doing so. And now he and his assistant superintendent, Alison Offerman-Celetano, are expanding the program to pre-K students as well. “We felt that our youngest learners would really grow from exposure to having their elders in the classroom,” Offerman-Celetano says. “It really gives everyone a sense of community, and builds that Island Park community pride.” The program makes both seniors and students feel welcome and excited. “We’re prompting any literacy skill-building and listening to storybooks, learning how to flip pages, any sort of print concepts and book knowledge,” said pre-K teacher Melissa Williams. “The students love to listen to the senior citizens

that volunteer their time to come in and read different books with them. And any social interactions as well.” Flyers were sent out to the Island Park community, and the response was almost overwhelming. “Every month they look forward to this,” Williams says. “As we progressed, we're actually learning to put sounds together, and looking at pictures and trying to figure out how to spell that

word. We're writing all our letters uppercase and lowercase, so they've come a very long way since we met in the summer — even writing their names, as well.” Hegarty provided transportation for any seniors who volunteered and needed it. Additionally, many of the seniors who volunteered have a past in education. By working with the Island Park Library and offering transportation, the district expanded the program to make Senior Citizen Reading Partners a regular opportunity. “I came a second time because I love it,” said one of the volunteer seniors. “I don't have grandchildren, so this is my biggest blessing. I just love reading to children. Just their beautiful faces, they’re just a lot of fun to be around. “I thank them for making me feel good.”

Warriors clean up Oceanside By Jasmine Sellars It’s a weekend morning in the heart of Oceanside. Kids are on bikes. Neighbors are mowing the lawn. You might even hear music turned up a little bit too loud. But if you look close enough, you might catch a glimpse of a member of the Oceanside Community Warriors. No, they are not arming for battle. Instead, they’re banding together to improve the neighborhood and help those in need. Founded in 2019, the Warriors are known to many for their park and town cleanups, toy drive events, and fundraisers. They recruit parents, children, students and even law enforcement officials to join in on the weekend endeavors. The beginning of the movement started with a series of Facebook posts from Oceanside neighbors pointing out that several parts of the community were run down with litter and debris. “There were people that would say some streets in Oceanside looked terrible and had weeds in them,” Warriors member Michael D'Ambrosio said. “So, we said, ‘Listen, we're going to meet over there on a Saturday morning. Who’s coming to help us?” Social media made a large impact on the Warriors’ outreach, as many users supported the group online and used the platform to stay updated on the changes happening within the

20

community. And the best part about their service work? Everything is casual, allowing volunteers to participate as they please, and support however they can. “One thing I could say is that the Warriors came from absolutely zero and people just saw things getting done,” said Joey Cibellis, who serves as the Warriors vice president. “The nice thing about social media is that all we needed to do was take a before-and-after picture, and

a group photo. And everyone knew that, in two hours, we made a difference.” In five short years, longtime friends Brian Driscoll, Paul Tucci and D'Ambrosio worked together to plan and execute dozens of serviceled projects, often brought on with the help of Facebook posts and neighbor suggestions. As the Warriors aim to make their community a nicer place, they support hundreds of people in Oceanside and neighboring communities, also picking up projects like monument cleaning and garden planting near the entrance signs of popular locations in the area. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the Warriors also delivered thousands of bagels to hospitals and essential workers who were unable to leave their workplaces. “At that particular time, there were different people that needed help, because they couldn't get out,” D'Ambrosio said. “We spoke to Bell’s Bagels, and they gave us 5,000 bagels. We delivered them to people that needed them.”

Cibellis, who has lived in Oceanside for more than 50 years, notes that though the community has changed drastically throughout his time here, it’s a great feeling to be able to bring people together. “The Warriors are a group of people that want to show up, have coffee, get a rake, get a broom, and just make a difference in a short time,” he says. “It's a lot easier because there’s no stress involved. And that’s what makes it successful.”

JPG Angels are turning loss into kindness By Jasmine Sellars John Gleeson was a beloved son, star student, and aspiring guitarist. But his family, friends and the entire Island Park community tragically lost him last February from a suspected overdose. The coronavirus pandemic hit John especially hard, his sister Erin says, creating mental health issues he simply couldn’t overcome. And now she has her own grief — but is working to handle hers in a much different way. Erin created JPG Angels, a page on Instagram using John’s initials to be one of the many ways Erin ensures her brother’s memory lives on in the heart and minds of people not just here in the community, but across the world. JPG Angels serves as motivation to keep her spirits high while spreading kindness to those in need. “The page started to blow up rather quickly,” Erin says. “At first, it was just our close friends. Then my mom and I would go out and spread kindness and we’d post about it.” Before his passing, John frequently took lessons at the Long Beach Guitar School, and even participated in their band. As a way to commemorate his love for music, Erin distributed guitar picks with John’s name, date of birth and passing, as well as a touching photo of him

playing his guitar. Passing out cards filled with heartfelt notes during finals week at her college also helps Erin feel good about spreading positivity during a time when many of her peers are stressed about exams. While she is no stranger to participating in community service, the projects she does in commemoration of her brother are her most memorable experiences of giving back to others. “JPG is very personal for me,” Erin says. “There’s a big factor in how I do things. I just see

everything differently now.” Mementos her family made in honor of John have traveled beyond Island Park, as she makes sure to share the keepsakes with friends and supporters of John’s story. “We reached all the way across the world,” Erin says. “He’s been to Japan. A friend of mine went to Japan with her school, and she brought some cards and guitar picks there. We brought him to Iceland this summer. He's been to Ireland, Germany, and a bunch of different countries.” In honor of John’s passing, Erin hopes to collaborate with the Greek life at her college and host a fundraiser in support of mental health awareness in adolescents. “JPG Angels has helped my grieving more than anything else could — especially with my mom,” Erin says. “It really gave us a purpose that

we didn't really know that we held. We were so happy that people were calling about the cards, and it opened up our eyes to the people who wanted to be involved. “I feel like it just also opened my eyes to like a new light of just being a human being.”

Wrestler devotes second chance to life of service By Janet Prete Sean Wachter found inspiration from sports commentator Stuart Scott when he gave the eulogy at his aunt’s funeral. You beat cancer not by being cured, but by "how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live.” Not two months later, Wachter got his own diagnosis — a rare stage 4 melanoma with leptomeningeal enhancement — meaning his cancer had spread to the meninges surrounding the brain, as well as his spinal cord. This type of cancer has a 12-week life expectancy after diagnosis, but Sean took Stuart Scott’s words to heart. “When they said 12 weeks, you’d think they said 12 years, because I said I’m going to do everything,” Sean says. “I’m not going down without a fight.” And fight he did. Last summer — seven years after diagnosis — Sean received a clean bill of health. His friend, Michael Fischer, said it was time to celebrate. But Sean just couldn’t see having a party when so many others were still suffering. So, that party? He turned it into a fundraiser for MSK Kids at Memorial Sloan Kettering. The pediatric unit at the Manhattan-based hospital didn’t have a separate radiation unit, so when Wachter was undergoing his own radiation treatments, he found himself beside children as young as 2 and 3.

26

This gave him the inspiration to donate money toward building an area at the hospital where kids could be treated separately from adults. Sadly, Fischer passed away just two weeks before the fundraising event. He suffered cardiac arrest at Peter’s Clam House in Island Park while helping his fellow firefighters raise money for Oceanside fire commissioner Michael Graham’s cancer-stricken son, Cooper, during the restaurant’s annual clam-eating contest.

Wachter held another fundraiser this past July in honor of Fischer, with proceeds going to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital — a cause beloved by Fischer. And Wachter hasn’t forgotten about what he and Fischer planned. He hasn’t forgotten at all. Cancer research is expected to benefit from a wrestling event in late October at The Space in Westbury, sponsored by New York Wrestling Connection, where Wachter will be one of the featured wrestlers. An online crowdfunding page has been created in connection with the event, with all donations going directly to the V Foundation, where every dollar goes to cancer research. In addition, GoFundMe — which is hosting the online portion of the fundraising — says it’s waiving all administrative fees, to ensure even more dollars go to V Foundation. The charity has a special connection to Wachter. He found out just this year the treatment plan that saved his life — which was a combination of three clinical trials — came about as a result of research funded by the V Foundation. Wachter has vowed that he will never monetize his cancer story, but will instead donate a percentage of proceeds from anything he does now and into the future to the V Foundation. “I always told myself that if I did get another chance, that I would make sure that I would give a life of service,” Wachter says. “Anything less than that would just be spitting in the face of everyone that believed in me, and everyone that piled behind me that helped me get through this.”
