Living In The Five Towns The Senior Life in... Five Towns

Through the coronavius pandemic, life has been difficult for seniors, as many of the activities they take part in are not in service.

The Center for Adult Life Enrichment in Hewlett, the Gural JCC, the Hewlett-Woodmere and Peninsula public libraries have kept programs running through Zoom and other virtual offerings.

CALE Executive Director Lee Gerardi has also worked hard to keep tabs on the members and keep them informed of the daily programming. The center is headquartered in what was once a carriage house on the Hewlett Estate, offers a wide array of programs, activities and trips for seniors, whose ages range from 60s to 90s.

Throughout the pandemic, Gerardi has emailed members on the day’s and even the week’s programs and shares informational programs from other institutions and organizations, and government entities such as Nassau County.

Wearing masks, retaining the six-foot social distancing and temperature checks remained in place as some programs have been in-person. The programs run the gamut from exercise, political discussion programs, educational lectures, concerts, bands, crossword puzzle games, art groups, singing groups and more. Last year automatic bathroom equipment to limit contraction was installed and areas are kept sanitized.

Gerardi ho has said that members and vendors are treated like family wrote: “Please let’s keep moving forward together one day at a time! Your support, patience, and understanding are much appreciated.”
