Sewanhaka Robotics Club earns numerous regional awards
The Sewanhaka Central High School District Robotics Club competed in and won various awards at the Long Island FIRST Tech Challenge Championship, which was held virtually.
This year’s game, ULTIMATE GOAL, required students to build a robot to pick up foam rings from the floor and launch them into one of three different goals positioned on one side of a 12-by-8-foot field.
On April 26, the Sewanhaka team was virtually recognized with the following awards: First Place Control Award, Second Place Inspire Award, Second Place Performance Award, Second Place Compass Award, Third Place Connect Award and Third Place Promote Award. Sewanhaka’s team finished second out of 20 competitors from across Long Island.

The robotics team at Gotham Avenue School worked together for this year’s FIRST Lego League competition to create socially distant sensory walks in the hallways of the school.
Decorating Gotham Avenue’s hallways
The robotics team at Gotham Avenue School in Elmont took part in FIRST Lego League’s 2021 competition despite coronavirus restrictions, engaging in the competition inside the school building at Gotham Avenue rather than at the organization’s event. FIRST Lego League’s events aim to teach science, technology, engineering and math to children between ages four and 16 through hands-on activities. This year’s FIRST Lego League competition challenged the robotics team at Gotham Avenue School to create a design that increased physical activity at the school, amid a pandemic that has reduced the level of exercise both many students and teachers engage in on a day-to-day basis.
