NSPC Health Science Competition top student winners announced
T
he nation’s only STEM/Health Science Competition featured 280 students and 50 prize winners with over $82,000 in prize money. Five Long Island high school science students recently received first place awards, one in each of five health science categories, at the second annual Neurological Surgery, P.C. (NSPC Brain & Spine Surgery) Health Science Competition. This event is the nation’s only STEM/health science competition. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic related school closures and stay at home orders, the competition and awards program were held virtually this year. Over 280 high school students representing the best and brightest from 37 high schools from Nassau and Suffolk counties competed for $82,000 prize money in this year’s competition. Students presented their health-focused, self-designed and researched projects online via websites and videos to judges with expertise in health science and medical research. The top 10 finishing teams in each of five categories will receive cash prizes ranging from $5,500 to $500. The five first place winners are: Anushka Gupta of Great Neck North High School in the “Behavioral Sciences” category; Suchir Misra of Jericho Senor High School in the “Bioengineering and Computational Biology” category; Tiffany Guo of Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington in the “Biology - Microbiology/Genetics” category; Lianna Friedman of Roslyn High School in the “Biology Medicine/Health” category; and Chelsea Pan of Ward Melville High School in the “Health Related Biochemistry/ Biophysics” category. Each winner received a $5,500 prize. “Despite the pandemic, this year we saw amazing projects from many brilliant and inspiring students. Their understanding of medicine and health-related subjects was impressive. Exploring the student’s projects, made it clear that the leadership of NSPC made the right decision to sponsor and hold the event this year virtually,” said Michael H. Brisman, M.D., the chief executive officer of NSPC. “The student competitors are exactly the people we need to
and wonder,” commented CSTL Executive Director Dr. Ray Ann Havasy. The student competitors prepared for months for the event and worked independently or as part of teams to research and create their projects. This event is sponsored by NSPC, one of the New York Metropolitan region’s premier neurosurgical groups. “Disappointingly for students many organizations cancelled science competitions this year due to the pandemic. The leadership of NSPC however, recognized that this year’s competition and its purpose was even more important than ever before for inspiring students who are interested in health science careers. As a result, student team interest and participation were record-breaking. This competition demonstrates the importance and critical role that health research and innovation play in education and encouraging inspiring young people to learn, explore
