SCHOOLS MALVERNE UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT Consisting of two elementary schools, a middle school and a high school, the Malverne Union Free School District has set stringent goals since it began as a single schoolhouse more than 160 years ago. Since then, Malverne has seen its school district grow in every aspect. High educational quality is a hallmark of the elementary schools. Small class sizes, with a student-to-teacher ratio of approximately 20 to 1, ensure that all children receive the attention they deserve. At the Howard. T. Herber Middle School there are diverse programs, including a full roster of clubs, so youngsters have an opportunity to explore various interests. The academic schedule is progressively individualized from the middle school to the high school, making the transition smooth. Malverne High School is one of the most effective secondary schools in the country. One of only 218 public and private schools selected as a U.S. Department of Education “School of Excellence” in 1989, it has long been known for its success in meeting individual students’ needs. A strong academic emphasis is complemented by a comprehensive career awareness program, so graduates are ready to make wise choices about their future lives. Since its birth, the district’s goal has been to create and maintain a total learning environment, where students, educators and parents can collaborate to provide for the education of children as independent, life long learners.
