elcome to our fourth annual 30 Under 30 edition of The Richmond Review. It’s a special edition where we profile 30 Richmondites who are under the age of 30 who are doing interesting things. This is not intended as a definitive list. We are not suggesting these are the top 30 under-30-year-olds in Richmond; they are just a group of interesting younger people whose stories we think you will enjoy. This year we have three siblings of past 30 Under 30 profilees: Kim Aldridge (sister Pam was in last year’s edition), Emma Hansen (her sister Alana was featured in 2010), and Colin Schaap (his sister Krista was featured in 2010).

Kim Aldridge athlete and youth worker Age: 24 High School: R.A. McMath Kim Aldridge says she’s grateful to have a network of inspiring friends and family. You can be assured they feel the same about her. From playing and coaching field hockey to her job as a child and youth activities worker at the Richmond Youth Services Agency, Aldridge clearly demonstrates her devotion to community. After serving as valedictorian for her high school graduating class of 2005, she attended University of B.C. where she played on the Thunderbirds’ field hockey team and was selected an Academic All-Canadian (maintaining at least an 80 per cent average while playing a varsity sport). At the same time, Aldridge was busy earning an arts degree. She put her studies to good use, overseeing the Richmond Aboriginal Leadership and Life Skills for Youth program as an aboriginal child and youth activities worker for the Richmond Youth Service Agency in 2010 and 2011. Aldridge is also proudly giving back to field hockey, and helped to coach the under-14 Southeast district team to gold at the 2010 B.C. Summer Games in Langley. Inspiration: “My sister Pam, who overcame two ACL surgeries in two years to help lead her field hockey team to a Division 1 NCAA round of 16 finish in her final year (2011) at Boston’s Northeastern University. I must also mention the Carey family, founders and huge supporters of the Richmond Field Hockey Club.” Most proud of: “Completing five years of varsity field hockey at UBC. Sure I’m proud I survived 6 a.m. morn-

ing practices and the fact we won two national titles, but I’m most proud of overcoming a negative attitude toward myself and others that came with a good amount (often deserved) of bench time. I gained valuable perspective in my last years as a T-Bird, which saw me start the season on the bench and end it on the field.” Advice: “A Musqeum elder, Larry Grant, I heard speak in my First Nations Studies classes said no matter what you are doing, even if it is a job you dislike, do it to the best of your ability. I also thank my parents for a similar sense of commitment to anything I sign up for, which they taught me at a young age.” What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? “Playing and socializing with the Vancouver Jokers women’s field hockey club, coaching field hockey, snowboarding and spending time at Mt. Baker, being with friends and family, and yoga.” —Don Fennell

Paulina Cantoral

If Canadian women’s volleyball team setter Carla Bradstock wants a quick bit of volleyball advice, she doesn’t have to go far to find it. Her mom, Christine, also played the game at a high level. Bradstock, who in 2008 earned tournament MVP honours in leading the University of B.C. Thunderbirds to their first national title in 30 years, is determined to help Canada land a spot in this summer’s Olympic Games in London, England. She’s confident the squad has what it takes to reach the pinnacle of their sport, including a solid support staff she believes will be instrumental to their success. Armed with plenty of international experience, including playing profes-

sionally in Austria and Sweden, she’ll play a key role in Canada’s quest to reach the Olympic tournament. Inspiration: “The rush I get from competing at a high level and making people close to me proud.” Most proud of: “It’s a tie between helping the University of B.C. break a 30-year drought to win gold at nationals, and stepping onto the court in my Team Canada uniform to play an international match.” Advice: “Find something you are passionate about and pursue it wholeheartedly.” Last great book read: “Mental Training for Peak Performance by Steve Ungerleider. I enjoyed it because I find it very interesting to see what other athletes do to ensure top results.” —Don Fennell

singer

Age: 18 High School: Matthew McNair From Mexico City to Richmond to New York City. That’s where Paulina Cantoral hopes her vocal chords will take her one day, when she’ll be a successful musician singing in concert at the Metropolitan Opera House. Born in Mexico and a Richmond resident most her life, Cantoral is perhaps better known for her performance last year at Gateway Theatre. There she sang the popular Leonard Cohen song “Hallelujah” in a singing competition among high school students. The performance earned her the 2011 title of RichCity Idol. She began taking music lessons two years earlier, and now has her sights set on a music career. The Matthew McNair grad is now enrolled in the classical voice program at Vancouver Community College. Other than singing, Cantoral enjoys cooking and playing squash and volleyball. Inspiration? “My parents are my inspiration because they have showed me that with hard work and passion I can do whatever I set my mind to. They have always supported me in everything I have done and constantly push me to do my best.” Advice? “The advice I have for others is to never give up on their dreams no matter how hard it can be.” Most proud of? “What I am most proud so far in my career is the opportunity to have been chosen as the only female soloist for the opening of the O Zone for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.” What reality TV show would you like to appear on? “I would like to appear on American Idol because I think it’s one of those shows that gives new artists

the opportunity they’ve been dreaming of, which can launch their careers to new heights.” What’s a dream concert for you? “My dream concert to attend would have been (during) the Michael Jackson This Is It! tour. I never got a chance to see him perform live. After I saw his movie, he was such an inspiration as a performer that I wish that I could have had the chance to experience it myself.” —Matthew Hoekstra

Curtis Chan isn’t a man of many words, but his play on the golf course speaks volumes. Not yet 16 years old, he’s already emerged as one of the top prospects in Canada. A small sampling of his achievements confirms why. In 2008, as a member of Team Canada’s junior squad, he competed in the Euro Junior Golf Cup event and finished second at the Hong Kong Junior Open Golf Championship. The following year he was third in the Callaway Junior World Golf Championship, and in 2010 won the B.C. Juvenile Boys’ Golf Championship, the Mizuno All-Canadians Award, and placed third at the AAron Baddeley International Junior Golf Championship. Last year, he was the most valuable player at the B.C. High School AAA Golf Championship. While Chan’s goal is to earn a golf scholarship for post-secondary education, his talent is hardly limited to the links. At Steveston-London Secondary, he’s a member of the principal’s honour roll (straight A’s) and in 2010 won a math award. Inspiration: “My coach, Phil Jonas, has a lot of experience playing as a pro golfer and it’s really good for me to go to him, not just for tips but also for advice about the mental game and how to move on after each shot.” Most proud of: “My determination and patience. There have been some rough patches which caused me to

take some time off from golf, but I was determined to get back at it.” Advice: “No pain, no gain. I’ve learned that sometimes when things are too easy, the results you’re looking for don’t come. Sometimes you have to work really hard at what you want.” What’s the last great book you’ve read? “Of Mice and Men.” —Don Fennell

Age: 17 High School: Hugh McRoberts Som Ghosh was just a teenager, but seeing a young child living on the streets in India prompted him to work for positive change in the world. Since then, the 17-yearold Grade 12 student cofounded the McRoberts in Action Group at his high school and has led many charitable efforts, including raising funds for the broken country of Haiti. Ghosh has won the McRoberts Service Award four years in a row for his volunteer work at the school, and has long been involved with student council. He’s also volunteered as a camp leader at South Arm Community Centre, served as an organizer for RichCity Idol and helped create a short film against drinking and driving that placed second in a recent BCAA competition. In 2010 Ghosh earned a spot on the Coast Capital Savings Richmond Youth Team, serving as a community ambassador at numerous events. Ghosh is also dedicat-

ed to music—studying violin for six years and is now a tenor saxophone player in a number of bands. He’s also a proud McRoberts Striker, who enjoys volleyball, rugby and hockey. In September, he hopes to study business at university, and continue his humanitarian work while inspiring others. Inspiration? “My family has always been an inspiration to me. My parents have sacrificed many things for me and my older sister to help us become the best individuals we can be. They have taught me that others’ welfare is more important than theirs, and as a result, these actions have inspired me to be a better individual each and every day.” Most proud of? “Hugh McRoberts Secondary Students have continuously played a positive role in our world both locally and internationally. McRoberts holds a strong community and spirited feeling between staff, students and administration.” Advice for others? “In life, in whatever you do, whoever you are,

and wherever you are from, you will make mistakes... However, you must understand that it is up to you to learn from these mistakes and by overcoming these obstacles it will make you a stronger and more successful individual in the future.” What drives you to volunteer? “Numerous direct and indirect experiences have shaped my character as an individual. Some of these include experiencing the loss of close family

members due to cancer and helplessly watching child beggars without a voice on the streets of India.” What’s something few people know about you? “Since Grade 8, I have not always excelled in my academics, volunteer commitments and extra-curricular involvement... Throughout these years I had learned the true importance for these aspects in my life and learnt from my many mistakes.” —Matthew Hoekstra

Jonathan Grand Pierre has built up a strong team around him at Nooch Snack and Chill, still drawing on lessons from his high school basketball coach from Kitsilano Secondary. The local entrepreneur opened up his first Nooch eatery on Jacombs Road in June of 2010, and with his formula working, wondered whether it could be transfered to a downtown Richmond location. So last November, he opened up another restaurant directly across the street from city hall, and is optimistic that with hard work and good planning, he’ll be successful. Much like his high school basketball days, it’s the lack of turnover and the emphasis on

Emma Hansen model Age: 21 High School: McRoberts As an international model, Emma Hansen has seen a lot of the world, but it’s the insight her experiences have given her into people that’s had a particularly profound impact on her life. She recalls living with young models from Russia and Eastern Europe and they just didn’t understand the concept of personal belongings, and would eat other people’s food or wear their clothing. Rather than being angry, she learned to be compassionate, and understand that people are brought up differently in different parts of the world. Hansen was just in elementary school, and performing at a St.

Patrick’s Day Irish dance show when she was ďŹ rst discovered. An agent took notice and presented her business card, but Hansen’s parents—including her famous father Rick— were steadfastly against it, feeling she was much too young. But a couple of years later, after she did her homework about which agency might represent her interests best, Hansen’s parents gave her the green light to pursue modelling as a career, which eventually took her around the world. Currently studying sciences at the University of B.C. and hoping to get into a medical lab science program, Hansen continues to be a part-time model, and has become increasingly involved with her father’s foundation, and joined him on a trip

to China. “China has been doing amazing things with regard to spinal cord research. Who is your inspiration? “I’ve been asked this a few times and I can’t just pin it to one person. I think I’d have to say I’m inspired by people in general. There are so many people out there who are defying odds and working hard to make a difference in the little bit of the world that is around them. I’ve been inspired by my amazing family, my friends and my own role models, all of whom stay true to themselves and never give up on their dreams. What are you most proud of? “In my career I’d say I’m most proud of keeping a strong head on my shoulders throughout the insanity that is the fashion industry. I am not one of those girls who

Humraj Kallu farmer, student

Age: 24 High School: Matthew McNair

Age: 24 High School: Richmond High

Humraj Kallu grew up surrounded by Richmond’s famous fruit. Ever since he can remember, Kallu has been helping out in the sprawling blueberry fields of CanWest Farms Ltd. Kallu now serves as operations manager at the farm, which cultivates, packages and exports blueberries worldwide. Its famous berries are also available at markets throughout the region, including directly at the Farm Market, CanWest’s on-farm produce store at the corner of Blundell and Sidaway roads. Kallu’s family started growing here in 1979, and the lifelong Richmond resident’s blood continues to run with a blue tinge. He’s currently studying at B.C. Institute of Technology, completing his final year in marketing management. The 24-year-old wants to take his education and enthusiasm back to the field, and see CanWest launch its own line of blueberry products. In my spare time Kallu can usually be found at the gym or in the company of friends and family. Inspiration? “The most inspiring person in my life would be my father. Aspiration is the strongest trait which I give my father credit for. He decided to immigrate to Canada back in the 1960s, as a child. He grew up with nothing more than the bare essentials, which gave him motivation and drive to create CanWest Farms... My father inspires me to be ambitious, hardworking and a well rounded person.” Most proud of? “One of my most proud moments was to see the success of our newly opened farm market. It was an idea we had been

Inside Nicole Javadi’s preschool and learning centre, pint-sized explorers learn by experiencing the world. Through experiential play, gardening, art, music, yoga, language and creative thinking, young students at With Our Own Two Hands Preschool are taking charge of their own learning. It’s part of the Reggio philosophy that Javadi, the school’s director, takes to heart—learning through exploration and discovery. Javadi, a 15-year Richmond resident, opened the school last August. With Our Own Two Hands also boasts a Learning Centre, offering classes for all ages after preschool hours. Javadi completed a psychology degree at Bishop’s University in Quebec and is now eyeing a master’s degree in early childhood education. She’s also a yoga practitioner, and has been teaching the art in Richmond for four years. She serves as a youth leader at her church, volunteers with a church shelter program and loves painting, photography, travelling and gardening. Inspiration? “Children inspire me. They are so spirited, engaged and curious. The excitement and wonder that children express towards even the

simplest of things inspires me to live with the same awe and enthusiasm. It is through their sense of wonder that children come to understand and engage in the world around them.” Most proud of? “That I’m in a place in my life where each day brings fulfillment and joy. I feel blessed and proud that I have been able to make my dream of opening a holistic and enriching school a reality.” Advice? “Pursue your passion in a way that serves a need in the world, without letting fear of failure slow you down. When your goal is to make a difference in the world while pursuing what you love and care about, you will succeed.” What led you to create a preschool? “I founded With Our Own Two Hands because there’s a great need for more holistic and nature-based programs for children in our city. I wanted to create a place of learning that was based in inclusion, community, exploration and nature.” —Matthew Hoekstra

Stephanie Ip From Page 5 She relished the opportunity to mentor other young people. “When I was young, a lot of people gave me opportunities to do things that not a lot of young people get,” she said. Who is your inspiration? “I’m inspired by all the journalists who have gone on before me. A lot of the seasoned journalists I see around me have put in years of legwork and remember what it was like being a journalist without Google or Twitter. It’s an industry very much based on skills and tricks you learn throughout

the years and I enjoy learning from journalists who have years’ worth of experience and knowledge.” What are you most proud of? “I’m proud of the experience I’ve gained in my first several months as a working reporter. I’m lucky in that I was given the opportunity to cover a very wide range of assignments that many reporters my age haven’t seen yet. I’ve covered elections on different levels, crime scenes, exclusive features and even a full-scale riot. I’m proud of what I’ve learned from each assignment and hope that I never forget to keep drawing from my experiences.” What is your advice for others? “Every time I talk to my mom about the frustrations I encounter at work, she always tells me to

It’s not about how fast you can reach somewhere, but how well prepared you are for the journey. Turn your dreams into several small goals and work on achieving each one in sequence.” What’s the best thing about operating a farm? “No day is the same. Every day you are faced with new problems and have to come up with creative ways to solve them.” What’s a favourite childhood memory? “Taking time away from the farm was rare for me and my four older sisters, but every year my parents would take the time out of their busy day and treat us to a family day at the PNE. forget about the things I have no control over. All I can do is keep my head down, work hard, continue learning and do my very best. There’s always going to be things in this world that will challenge and discourage me but if I keep in mind where I want to go and how I’m capable of doing that, I’ll be okay. It’s the same thing I would tell others.” If you weren’t a journalist, what would you be doing and why? “I’d be a social worker or a youth specialist, hopefully. The reason I’m a reporter today is because someone gave me the chance to write for a newspaper when I was 13. Through that experience, I was encouraged, received great mentorship and feedback and here I am.” —Martin van den Hemel

Aviva Levin teacher A long-standing adage suggests laughter is the best medicine. But it’s not only the medical profession that subscribes to it; so does Richmond teacher and entertainer Aviva Levin. Since high school, Levin (now a social studies teacher in the Richmond School District) has been a member of Tickle me Pickle, a local improvisational theatre troupe that promotes good humour. Today, she’s cocaptain of the troupe and with her fellow improvisers presents shows at the Richmond Cultural Centre and mentors young improv actors— further extending her love of teaching. The desire to give back is imbedded in Levin’s soul. A dedicated community leader, she has also contributed greatly to Chimo Crisis Services, a non-profit organi-

Always ask ‘why?’ Being curious has led to job opportunities, new friends and a ton of fun anecdotes.” What do you enjoy doing in your free time? “Laughing loudly, listening to music, and watching movies or live theatre. I am also an avid reader and can be found at least once a week prowling the mystery section (at the library).” —Don Fennell

Nicole Li has been building a reputation as one of the premier erhu players in B.C. The erhu is a two-stringed bowed instrument. It is similar to a violin, but it has no fingerboard, is played vertically and can create a striking range of expressive sounds. Although it has been used in China for centuries, it has only emerged as a solo instrument in the past 100 years. Li is originally from Northern China. Her mother is a singer and both her parents love music. “My Chinese first name is song,” she says. She first played the erhu in school at age six when she and her fellow students were asked to pick an instrument to learn. “Everyone picked piano or violin and there was an erhu. It looked interesting...So my teacher said ‘Would you like to try that?’” She attended the prestigious Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where she graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor degree in Erhu. Li moved to Richmond almost four years ago. She performs as a concert master in the B.C. Chinese Orchestra and gives lessons at her Richmond-based music studio, JW Music Studio. Li has collaborated with musicians from different cultural backgrounds. According to her website, she’s working to “not only challenging the boundaries of Chinese music, but more importantly, hoping to make erhu widely accepted in the Western culture.” For more information and some samples of her playing, see www.nicole-li.com. Who is your inspiration? “My parents are my inspiration because they normally don’t praise me, but have on several important occasions. Those encouragements are always effective on me at the right time. I know they will always be there for me.” What are you most proud of? “I am most proud I accomplished my own concert last year in Richmond. I can still remember that night, I was too tired to be nervous. I played different styles on my instrument and felt the connection with other musicians, I talked a lot on the stage and felt very comfortable for the very first time in front of an audience of a thousand. I fulfilled myself through the old Chinese instrument erhu. The most amusing part, after the concert, some audience members told me ‘You know what, I think you are a very good emcee.’” What is your advice to others? “Find yourself and follow your heart.” —Bhreandáin Clugston

Jonathan Grand Pierre From Page 4 Advice for others? “Stay positive through thick and thin. The energy of the world is most heavily influenced by positive people: be one of them. Also, build a strong team around you, and surround yourself with positive people who encourage you to maximize your potential as a positive being.” Where do you see yourself in 10 years? “I intend on shifting my focus more from business related ventures toward community-building ini-

tiatives. The three areas of particular importance to me are to encourage widespread literacy programs, to educate people from all walks of life about the importance of sustainable farming practices, and also to guide the upcoming generation of young entrepreneurs.” Favourite book? “My favourite book is by Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose. This book reenforced the importance of positivity, to distance oneself from the ego, and to work every day

towards embracing the underlying conscious-

ness which connects us all. Also, Tolle lives

Amit Sandhu

CEO AMPRI GROUP RICHMOND REVIEW’S 30 UNDER 30 RECIPIENT IN 2011

Recognized by Profit Magazine’s FuEL Awards as one of the top 20 entrepreneurs under 30 in Canada

“Continue to do the outstanding work that you do and add to your list of personal achievements while supporting your community along the way. Use this recognition as a platform from which you can leverage your efforts to reach the next milestone in your personal and professional lives.” The Ampri Group operates a growing portfolio of companies owned and managed by the Sandhu Family of Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. The primary focus of the group is Real Estate Development & Investment. The real estate conglomerate operates under four broad divisions; Residential, Commercial, Hospitality and Agriculture. Since 1991, the group has developed over 500 homes and has acquired 500 residential apartment units, 43,000 sq/ft of commercial retail space, and several urbandevelopment and agricultural properties across Canada.

Ranae Miller’s career path in musical theatre recently jumped a median to explore an entirely new road. Outstanding in her performance of Liesl von Trapp in Gateway Theatre’s recent production of The Sound of Music, Miller is now playing the role of Alotta the Mermaid in the neo-burlesque musical Lost Girls of Neverland. It’s a role she never imagined playing, but Miller, a recent Capilano University musical theatre grad, took the chance. And, recognizing her own potential for growth, she’s thankful she did. The longtime Richmond resident’s love for musical theatre began at Gateway Academy, where she trained for six years. When she’s not on stage or in rehearsal, Miller can be found working at Bell’s Bake Shop in Steveston, practising yoga, jogging or, as a self-professed “book nerd,” reading. A bright future lies ahead for Miller, who last month netted a 2011 Ovation Award for Outstanding Newcomer from Applause! Musicals Society. Who is your inspiration? “My best friends and university classmates have always inspired me... But my mother is the one person who inspires me the most. She is the strongest woman I have ever known... When people say I resemble my mother, it is the highest compliment I could ever receive.”

Ranae Miller has had roles ranging from The Sound of Music to neoburlesque.

What are you most proud of? “I am very thankful for the opportunities I had at school and have had in the theatre community since graduating. But I am simply most proud of the award that I won at the 2011 Ovation Awards.” What is your advice for others? “Do the things that scare you. I guess that applies both to life and acting. I used to be someone who would hold herself back from things simply because they scared me. But I found that doing so limited my experiences, learning and growth. We had a motto in university: ‘No fear, third year.’ And it honestly helped. Reminding myself of that helped me do things that a year or two ago I probably wouldn’t have done.”

Why does acting appeal to you? “Acting allows me to be someone completely like myself or someone completely opposite to myself... It’s being able to be someone else and explore the human mind and movement, to really dig into a character and figure out what makes that person tick and to bring that character to life.” What’s the most memorable show you’ve seen? “It was a production of The Secret Garden at the Gateway Theatre. Everything about the show was exquisite. The cast, the set, the costumes, the story—it was all stunning. It was the first musical I had seen, and watching it was a primary moment I knew I wanted to be an actress.” —Matthew Hoekstra

Nicole Ngai sea cadet, student

ANIMAL HOSPITAL New Clients & House Calls Welcome

Age: 19 High School: Hugh McRoberts Nicole Ngai achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer First Class in her seven years with the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets. But perhaps more important were her other, less formal titles: mentor, leader and role model. Her accomplishments with the local corps not only earned her the highest rank in the Sea Cadet program, but they also earned her the respect of others. And in 2011—her last year as a cadet—Ngai was honoured with the National Sea Cadet of the Year award. Born in Hong Kong, Ngai move to Richmond at age five. In high school she was involved in various school activities, including rugby. The 19-year-old plays piano and is passionate about design. A marketing student at University of B.C., Ngai is pursuing a career in fashion and is in the midst of designing drafts for a clothing line. At UBC she serves as editor of Global Ink Magazine for the International Business Club and in April, she’ll revisit her cadet roots by delivering a speech at the Sea Cadets annual general meeting in Ottawa. Who is your inspiration? “I can’t really pinpoint one person because I am constantly inspired by different things and people everyday. But off the top of my head: Mother Nature, Alexander McQueen (late British fashion designer).” What are you most proud of? “The relationship I currently have with my family. There had been a time when things were tense, but now it is such a joy to go back home to a smiling family.” Advice for others? “Family comes before anything else in the world, know who your friends are and keep them close, and stay true.” How would you describe yourself? “I’m young and optimistic. I have nothing I can lose but pride and I take as many risks as I can.”

604.275.2066 Nicole Ngai (right) was honoured with the National Sea Cadet of the Year award last year.

What did you enjoy most about being a part of the Sea Cadets? “The unexpected moments of dealing with young teenagers. At some point you really feel like a teenage

parent yourself when kids come running up to you with their problems, their achievements or for a pat on the back... Another thing was the autonomy of the program,

when officers would give you free rein on a project. I feel like that was when I could really get into the grit of things and do my best for those kids.” —Matthew Hoekstra

I feel so lucky to be born and raised in Richmond and I thank my parents for all the doors in life that they have opened for me.” What is your advice for others? “Learn about the important issues that impact your life and society, and then make a positive impact. It was history that fascinated Matt Pitcairn after graduating from high school. But he now finds himself passionate about the future of politics, and among other things how young people will vote in the coming years. Pitcairn graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of B.C., and soon after began working part-time as a constituency assistant for Richmond Steveston MLA John Yap. It was there that he tackled a youth outreach initiative to try to drive home the message of the importance of voting, while gauging why youth were or were not voting and what issues were important to them. But one of the main goals of the outreach was to try to come up with ways for government to get youth to vote. Pitcairn, who has lived in Richmond all of his life and whose parents live in Steveston, said making it easier to vote, whether through Twitter, Facebook, or via one’s home computer, represents the future of voting. Aside from his thirst for politics, he wants to make a difference in the world and believes in the concept of thinking globally while acting locally. He’s currently the president of the Richmond City Centre Community Association, which is in the midst of planning for an eventual expansion that will see the association occupy a second building, alongside the Quintet residential development at Minoru and Firbridge Way. He also sits on the Caring Place society board, and the Steveston historic society. Who is your inspiration? “I am inspired by people. I am especially inspired by my elders who have so much more knowledge and life experience than me. One of the most important things in life is to know what you don’t know and

angle possible, left, right, green, red, blue, and then make up your own mind.” Why is politics your passion? “I love the idea of making a difference in our society. Politicians often get a bad rap but they play a very important role in our society. I will be the first to admit that some politicians do fit the stereotype but many don’t and are real leaders with real vision. I aspire to be the latter and to make a difference, creating policy that makes life better for people today...” —Martin van den Hemel

As a child, Ana Prpic remembers spending nights with her grandmother learning the fine art of needlepoint. With scraps of material, Prpic created clothing for her dolls. Crafting a three-dimensional object from a flat piece of fabric had Prpic hooked. Prpic grew up in Richmond, raised with her three brothers in a traditional Croatian family. Sewing became her creative outlet. During breaks in high school, Prpic could be found in the sewing labs working on her next project. Last April, Prpic graduated from Kwantlen’s four-year Fashion Design and Technology Program. For her final project at Kwantlen, Prpic created a line of maternity clothes meant to allow pregnant women to celebrate their changing bodies. She’s now a design assistant for Ivivva Athletica, a division of Lululemon Athletica that creates athletic apparel for active girls, with a focus on dance, gymnastics and figure skating. When not at work, Prpic enjoys yoga, reading, travelling, rollerblading and spending time with friends and family. Her goal is to become a designer for Ivivva’s gymnastics division and one day teach wouldbe designers in Kwantlen’s fashion program. Who is your inspiration? “In everyday life all the people, friends and family around me. For work: the girls that we are designing for. We rely on their feedback so much to hear what they need and want. We talk to elite and hardcore dancers, gymnasts and athletes, and their determination and dedication is very inspiring.” What are you most proud of? “I am most proud of being able to successfully make it through an intense and selective program like Kwantlen’s and then being able to jump right into a position in the industry.” What is your advice for others? “Hard work and dedication always pays off.” How would you describe your sense of fashion? “Casual Chic.” Do you have plans to take your maternity line further? “At this point I do not have plans to take my maternity line any further. It was a great learning experience for me in terms of thinking about and really understanding a new target market and how their clothes need to function and feel. I also learned a lot in terms of construction and pattern drafting on a completely new body type and shape.” —Matthew Hoekstra

Colin Schaap rower Age: 18 High School: R.A. McMath; St. George’s School (Grade 11 and 12) Colin Schaap is perhaps best known as one of Canada’s top young rowers, having helped the men’s four to an eighth-place finish at the 2011 World Junior Rowing Championships and contributing to both the 2010 and 2011 Canadian junior heavyweight eight winning teams. But the depth of the accomplished sportsman’s resume is indicative of a wellrounded individual. Notable is his dedication to community and helping others less fortunate. He volunteered for his high school’s Christmas hamper drive three years in a row, raised funds for World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine, and was a student delegate

in Richmond Rotary’s participation in the 2010 Greenlympic Legacy Environmental Conference. He also showed a keen interest in the performing arts, acting in his high school production of A Few Good Men, and serving as assistant stage manager in the theatre production of Playboy of the Western World. All the while, he managed to remain on the school’s academic honour roll. Now a freshman on the rowing team at Boston’s Northeastern University, Schaap’s athletic prowess, which extends to basketball and volleyball, earned him St. George’s Headmaster’s Award for outstanding contribution to school athletics in 2010. Schaap is also an outstanding swimmer, having earned several provincial medals. He’s also coached the

Richmond Kigoos’ Tater Tots junior program. Who is your inspiration? “My parents have helped me to set and accomplish many of my goals. They have been there for my early morning practices, after-school activities, and supported my participation in countless competitions. They have been excellent

fullest potential. They have taught me to be persistent, a team player, and to have a strong work ethic. Each has passed on their unique words of wisdom which I try to apply to all aspects of my life. “Finally, I have also been very lucky to have an extremely supportive group of friends throughout high school. I am grateful

role models and I credit much of my success as a person to their active role in my life. My two sisters have also been a huge inspiration and support to me.” What are you most proud of? “I have had the privilege of working with many incredible teachers and coaches who have helped to inspire me to reach my

for their friendship and encouragement.” What is your advice for others? “John Ruscitti, a coach and mentor, once told me that to be successful you have to thrive in any situation—not just survive. I’ve tried to take his words to heart and make the most out of any situation. It has become my motto for homework, training and everyday

life.” What do you enjoy doing most in your free time? “Like many university students, free time is a rare commodity. If I’m not in the boat or fast asleep, you can find me at one of Northeastern’s three cafeterias with my friends, socializing, and filling up on as many calories as possible.” — Don Fennell

four times annually, more often than not the family—including his younger brother—isn’t together. And he credits that with fostering his independent spirit, which last June saw him fly to Kenya as part of a Me to We trip to help build a school. He said he’s been fortunate to have seen a lot of the world thanks to family trips to places like the United States and Europe. Shih’s parents encouraged him to volunteer, but soon after testing the waters, it came to be something that struck a chord with him. He’s involved with student council, grad committee, and volunteer clubs. His work for the Richmond Youth Services Agency’s Generation Homework Club, where high school students tutor their elementaryaged counterparts, is something he especially enjoys. Shih’s volunteering efforts earned him a Volunteers Are Stars Award last December. Who is your inspiration? “I have never categorized anyone as my ‘inspirational’ person. Rather, what motivates me is the desire to be better than

Martin van den Hemel photo Teddy Shih was recognized with a Volunteers Are Stars Award for his volunteering efforts. the Teddy from a day ago. This emphasis on self-improvement is something that my parents taught me years ago.” What are you most proud of? “Over the years, I have been involved in various volunteering organizations, in the community and at Steveston-London. That is why I was really honoured when I won Volunteer Richmond’s Shooting Star award last December. It means a great deal to me to be recognized by my local community.” What is your advice for others?

“Don’t be afraid of taking chances! I never knew a trip to Kenya would have such a big impact on me, but I stand corrected. It is impossible to know where your real interest lies or what new heights you can reach without first mustering up the courage to step outside your comfort zone.” How did your trip to Kenya change you? “On one hand, seeing the smiles on the villagers’ faces helped me become more appreciative of the smaller aspects of life, like spending time with friends, family,

and extra-curriculars. On the other, seeing poverty first-hand taught me there is much more I can do to better the world. “ Where do you see yourself 10 years from now? “I will be 27, hopefully with a master’s degree and some work experience under my belt. I have always wanted to work on the East Coast, so during these ten years, I expect to undergo some life-changing transitions. This is so exciting to envision how my future will all unfold!” —Martin van den Hemel

Aamir Sheriff student When Aamir Sheriff helped lead an initiative to open his mosque’s doors to the public, he didn’t think the efforts would be so successful. But some 300 people from all parts of the community, and many faiths, participated in Journey into Islam, which served to clear up people’s misconceptions about the Muslim faith. In fact, the event was so successful, organizers are now mulling over whether to make it an annual offering. “I think the responsibility of all of us is to do something beyond the walls of our mosque,” he said. Sheriff is currently studying business at Simon Fraser University and is originally from Bangalore, India. He and his family moved to Richmond eight years ago, and he said he’s proud to live in such a diverse community of people who respect each others differences. Who is your inspiration? “My inspiration comes from those who surround me. Wherever I am, whether it be at home, with other members of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), or with friends, I know I’m part of a group of individuals who stay up late at night working on what they’re passionate about. This keeps me going in my pursuits.” What are you most proud of? “At a confer-

ence for our Bright Ideas program under SIFE, the parents of a high school participant were truly inspired by their son’s efforts in creating a social venture and making an impact. I wasn’t directly responsible for his achievements, but I’m proud to say that SIFE inspired him and that I was there to witness his successes.” What is your advice for others? “My main advice for others is to find others who share the same passions, gain from their motivation, and together turn ideas into action. Throughout all this, don’t take on more than you can handle, so that in the end, you know you put in your 100 per cent.” What planted the seed for your eventual involvement with SFU’s Students in Free Enterprise? “After exploring a few other organizations at SFU, I realized that SIFE would allow me to explore my passion for entrepreneurship, learn how to successfully manage projects while gaining advice and constructive criticism from my peers, and make an impact in the community at the same time.” Where do you see yourself 10 years from now? “I see myself continuing my education in some form or another, maybe completing my MBA. I also see myself running a social venture or a small business, one that allows me to give back to the community.” —Martin van den Hemel

blight, and morning glory mysteriously appearing. Since adversity builds character they tasted great!” Advice to others? “Leave your office and get your hands dirty by whatever means necessary. We’re built to be outside and interact with nature, and I very firmly believe that a good many ailments that affect us vanquish themselves once we establish a lifestyle that is more in line with what we

were doing prior to industrialization. We’re simply not designed to be boxed up in cubicles and isolated from those around us while compartmentalizing everything as a means to an end. Seeing everything as a means to accumulate wealth isn’t healthy, nor is it honest, as it deprives us of an organic experience of our world.” What are small farmers’ biggest challenges? “The biggest

challenges facing us as small farmers are Californian competition driving the prices down and turning people off of vegetables, and land speculation. In short: we can train more farmers but what’s keeping them here? This should be at the top of the government’s agenda, but we’re a very tiny minority and a bumper-crop of cabbage won’t afford us much in the way of political influence.” —Bhreandáin Clugston

Miles Smart is a young farmer who runs Cherry Lane Farm. Located near Costco in North Richmond, the farm is a reminder of Richmond’s agricultural’s past amidst urban surroundings. Milo Savkovic started the farm 60 years ago. A few years ago, his grandson Miles took over running the farm which is noted for its apple cider, tomatoes, grapes and other produce. Inspiration? “My inspiration would have to be my grandfather, Milo Savkovic, who bought our farm in the mid’50s after emigrating from Eastern Europe. He took a piece of land that had all of the soil down to the clay substrate removed, completely built it back up, and it became (long before my advent) a highly productive piece of land that may well be the most productive field of its type in Richmond. For the first few years he didn’t get anything, and whenever he did attempt to seed he’d have to do it three times over because the birds would dig up every last seed. If he was lucky he’d get to argue with processors about the price. Such tenacity in the face of huge obstacles isn’t usually seen in people!” What are you most proud of? “That is a tough call. I would have to say that it’s a toss-up between my Romano beans (that one particular customer likes to secure for himself by threatening to send his henchmen over to to break my knees—ha ha), and my tomatoes. My nightmares come spring usually revolve around waking up to see my tomatoes buried in four feet of snow, which was perhaps the only challenge they didn’t see last year! Strangely enough we still got a nice crop off them despite the ground getting covered in moss and algae, several bouts of hail hitting right after planting, early

returns up to

McMath Noemie Thomas continually sets high standards, then exeeds them. Swimming Canada’s 2011 female youth swimmer of the year, Thomas’ dedication to her craft is both exemplary and inspiring. She trains several times each week under the guidance of UBC Dolphins Swim Club coach Tom Rushton, always with an eye to be better than the time before. At last July’s summer nationals in PointeClaire, Que., Thomas’ personal best time of 59.65 seconds in the women’s 100-metre butterfly earned her a Canadian championship. She also won gold in the women’s 50-metre event, and later in the year reached the final at the 2011 junior world championships in Lima, Peru. Thomas began making positive waves on the national swimming scene in 2010, when as a member of the Canadian prospects team competing at the Montreal Canada Cup, she swam in the 50-, 100- and 200-metre butterfly finals and helped to win silver in the women’s four by 100 medley relay. The strong showing earned her selection into the North America Challenge Cup, but she competed instead at the Junior Pan-Pacs as the youngest member of the team and swam a personal best 1:00.20 seconds in the 100 butterfly—a new national record for 13and 14-year-old girls. Inspiration: “Limitless dreams and working day in and day out at accomplishing it. And the dedication of people who support me—my coach Tom Rushton, my parents, family and friends.” Most proud of: “All the experiences I have had because of swimming. Though most times are tough, the rewards are worth it.” Advice: “Attitude is everything. Never limit yourself to what others have accomplished. You are your own person and you can do anything you set your mind to.” —Don Fennell

British Columbia has traditionally been synonymous with forestry and today this industry is still one of the cornerstones of our economy, especially in many rural communities which strongly value and support timber harvesting. With over two-thirds (60 million hectares) of the provincial land mass covered in forest we can count on a healthy industry for many more years. B.C. has more than 110 lumber mills, over 70 with a capacity of more than 40 million board feet per year; 27 veneer, plywood and OSB (oriented strand board) mills, eight pellet mills, 18 pulp mills (six of which are also paper mills) and over 80 other primary processing mills such as chips, shake and shingle, pole, and log manufacturers. The forestry sector has a deep pool of skilled professionals and a highly trained workforce. Altogether the industry employs well over 50,000 well paid employees, often the life-blood of small towns. B.C.’s forest sector is definitely starting to recover from the last decade’s downturn. Since 2009, over two dozen mills have announced they are re-opening or adding shifts. The importance of this industry to B.C. is demonstrated by the fact that 40% of the province’s regional economies are based on forestry activities, in more than 7,000 businesses. Coast Clear Wood serves niche markets by providing lumber products to match the specific needs of international markets. The have garnered success by focusing their efforts on marketing their products in Canada, USA, Puerto Rico, Mexico, China, Korea, and India. With plans for further expansion into new markets, Coast Clear Wood continues to source high quality raw materials from Canada and other international suppliers that meet the high standards of their customers. Owner Tom Sundher is very proud to have twice won a B.C. export award for his work in India; he is considered a leader in opening the market for B.C. wood in that country. One reason for growth in the industry is the Asian market. International buyers know that B.C. is a stable supplier of high-quality wood products; we can provide timber supply security. This secure supply, coupled with the fact our spruce, pine, fir, hemlock and balsam fibre baskets are among the richest in the world makes B.C. extremely attractive.

The B.C. brand of wood products is well established globally with market-leading shares in key countries such as China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. B.C. is also looking to be the first major country that deals in softwood lumber to establish its products in the India marketplace. Working with the federal government and industry, the Province has strengthened and diversified the B.C. forest sector by increasing market demand for softwood lumber throughout Asia. The global demand for bio-products from the forest is predicted to reach $200 billion a year. Renewable fuels, plastics, and chemicals for the pharmaceutical and food industries can potentially be manufactured by running wood fibre and residues through bio-refinery. B.C. has taken steps to make it easier for the non-lumber sector to source supplies of lower quality fibre. This includes fibre supply licences to cut to use logging debris that is left behind on landings and roadsides. Taking care of this natural abundance is critical. An amazing statistic is the fact B.C. has planted more than six billion trees since reforestation programs began in the 1930’s, and is on track to plant its seven billionth tree in 2013/14. We plant an average of 200 million trees each year. B.C. produces more wood products certified to environmental standards than any other region in the world and has 53 million hectares certified to one of three internationally recognized sustainable forest management certification standards. Growth now and in the future requires a solid foundation. B.C. created the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations to deal with increasing demands and pressures on the land base by taking a more integrated approach to managing B.C.’s natural resources. BC Hydro launched a two-phase Bioenergy Call for Power. Phase one has helped advance bioenergy development in Kamloops, Castlegar and Prince George, while phase two has done the same for Chetwynd, Fort St. James, Fraser Lake and Merritt. B.C. has also passed the Wood First Act to promote and encourage a cultural shift that will make wood the first choice for construction in the commercial and institutional sectors as well as residential. The future looks very bright for this most iconic of British Columbia industries.

Couple finds the perfect place to call home

A lot to love at Maynard’s Block Cozy spaces might be great for some couples, but Arseniy Tkachuk and Kseniya Stepanova are not one of them. “I can’t stand tiny apartments,” Tkachuk says. The size was the most important feature to him when they were looking for a home. They found the perfect place in Vancouver’s Maynard’s Block, built by Aquilini Development Corporation. They looked at several places before deciding to buy there. “After living in Burnaby for a few years, I came to the conclusion that living in this suburb is neither here nor there,” says Stepanova. “It doesn’t offer all the conveniences of a central location, yet it’s not a quiet getaway

either.” “We both work nearby,” adds Tkachuk. “It’s great to be able to walk ... instead of driving for half an hour. And ... I love big cities, people, traffic and busy streets if I’m not in the car.” Stepanova also loves the building itself. “I love the windows that curve along the length of the apartment, bringing in lots of light. It’s not the typical boxy layout that you see everywhere else,” she says. “Arseniy designs and sells wall beds and custom closets, so he has seen a lot of apartments ... that was another reason we chose the area. It’s inspirational and convenient for his line of work,” says Stepanova.

Taking a page out of Beatles history

Come together at South Surrey’s Abbey Road by Kerry Vital

The Abbey Road Studios, where the Beatles recorded some of their iconic albums, was originally a Georgian townhome from the 1800s. Now, Woodbridge Homes brings you your own piece of Georgian architecture, with its newest townhome development, Abbey Road. Located in the up-and-coming Morgan Heights area, it’s an unusual type of architecture in the neighbourhood. “It’s something a bit different,” says sales manager Tara Desmond. “This is something really unique for South Surrey.” The exteriors include iron gates and window boxes, so your green thumb will be put to good use. The shutters and elegant brick combine to make a home that looks truly amazing. There’s one feature at Abbey Road that is sure to get a lot of use this summer. The large patios and decks are perfect for entertaining, with an optional natural gas barbecue connection and plenty of space for groups of all sizes. With 11 different floorplans available and three different colour schemes, there is plenty of choice at Abbey Road. One of the floorplans includes the master bedroom on the main floor, which Desmond says has been highly sought after recently. The kitchen holds another popular feature, a gas range. Chefs and home cooks alike are in love with them, Desmond says. That range is just one of the stainless-steel appliances that comes standard at Abbey Road. Chic quartz countertops are complemented by classic shaker-style cabinets with crown mouldings and polished nickel hardware and under-cabinet lighting beneath the overheight upper cabinets. This lighting is a fantastic addition to the home, as it illuminates your workspaces and highlights the ceramic and glass tile backsplash. Spacious nine-foot ceilings on the main floor contribute to the airy feel inside, while the large windows maximize natural light. Wide-plank wood laminate flooring throughout the main living areas and nylon carpeting on the upper level are seamlessly integrated with the wooden baseboards featured throughout. The ensuite bathrooms include a deep soaker tub, and it’s not hard to imagine yourself sitting there with a glass of wine and a good book. The

This is something really unique for South Surrey,” says sales manager Tara Desmond.

ceramic tile surrounds are set off by the stone countertops and dual undermount sinks with polished chrome faucets and elegant vanity mirrors with solid wood frames. The secondary bathrooms also include custom vanities and the mirror, as well as oversized glazed ceramic tile flooring and polished chrome bath accessories. The official opening for sale took place on Feb. 18, but Desmond says three homes were sold before that. A further seven were sold on opening weekend. The Morgan Heights neighbourhood has seen a lot of development recently, so buyers are close to nearly everything they could ever need. The shopping possibilities are particularly impressive, with the Grandview Corners shopping centre and Wal-Mart just around the corner. Restaurants, schools and recreation are also nearby. Homes start at $364,900. For more information visit abbeyroadliving.com or call 604-542-0660.

Justin Villarosa musician Age: 19 High School: R.A. McMath

It was a single word rolling around Justin Villarosa’s head. The word, Gentleman, became the start of something much bigger, a bornin-Richmond hip hop group Gentleman’s Vibe. Classy, original and proper, the word defined the way the duo approached music—do it right and make the best possible product. In early 2010, Villarosa teamed with Neal Zabala to form Gentleman’s Vibe. Since then the pair has been

breaking barriers and making music against the odds independent artists face. Born in Cavite City, Philippines, Villarosa moved to Richmond at age eight. After graduating high school, he studied at Langara College, but took a break to focus on music. He draws inspiration from artists who aren’t afraid to be different: XV, Nat King Cole, Florence + the Machine, Chiddy Bang, Shad and Drake. Besides his work with Gentleman’s Vibe, Villarosa works part-time and writes

songs for other artists. He calls himself a regular kid who likes to spend time with friends and family, and is grateful for everyone who’s supported him. Inspiration? “I have many inspirations that impacted the way I view my music. My family is one of them. My parents have always taught me to strive for more than average and to pursue whatever makes me happy. They have always believed that I have what it to takes to stand out and be someone of importance.” See Page 35

Cynthia was born in Saskatoon, SK, the daughter of Frank and Ruth (nee Rempel) Klassen. She was born the second oldest of four children into a loving family, but faced many challenges throughout her all too short life. Cynthia shared her mother’s remarkable memory for birthdays and anniversaries as well as enjoyed a gift for writing poetry. She also had an amazing sense of humour, even in her darkest hours, cheering up many a person with her phone calls. Cynthia was a devoted Christian, baptized in Richmond Bethel Mennonite Brethren Church on Aug. 17, 1975. Cynthia is predeceased by her mother Ruth and survived by her father Frank Sr. as well as brothers Frank, Lorne and Jeff along with her sister-in-laws Karen, Wendy/Rose & Kate; nieces and nephews Kaila (Kevin - daughters Ava & Evvy), Kelsey, Philip (Lian), Elise and Aaron. During Cynthia’s hardest times, she appreciated the love and support of her family along with many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Age: 29 High School: Charles E. London

Age: 26 High School: Richmond High Nathan Leonhardt didn’t pick up a golf club until 2002, but it didn’t take long for the-then 16 year old to realize this was the game for him. After graduating from high school, he spent the next two years honing his craft before accepting a golf scholarship to Dallas’ Northwood University. He then took his game to a higher level after transferring to Arizona State and concluded his university golf career at Johnson & Wales in Miami, Fla. In 2010, Leonhardt won the Arizona midamateur championship and was runner-up at the Vancouver Amateur, but his biggest achievement was winning the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Classic Championship. Today, he’s excited to be part of the competitive world of pro golf, having earned his Canadian Tour card last year and full status for 2012. He is hoping to continue to build on an upward trend, which includes shooting a course record 62 at Mayfair Lakes Golf & Country Club last August. Who is your inspiration? “I get my inspiration from great performances I’ve had in the past. Golf is very tough to be consistent at, but just knowing what I’ve accomplished already keeps me going to be the best I can be as often as possible.” What are you most proud of? “Where I am and what I’ve accomplished in the short period I’ve been playing golf.” What is your advice for others? “Always 477

have a team (family, friends and mentors) around when you’re trying to achieve your dreams, because trying to do it on your own is difficult.” What do you enjoy doing in your free time? “I would say going to the gym and working on my fitness, but that’s part of my job now. So I’d have to say laying by the pool (in Arizona) trying to offset the golf tan.” —Don Fennell

It’s not hard to figure out how Danielle Woo became so passionate about dentistry. Following in the footsteps of her father Dr. Allan Woo, at Centro Dental on Granville Road, Danielle too became a dentist, graduating from the University of B.C. “He absolutely loves what he does. He’s absolutely passionate about dentistry,” Danielle said Thursday, as her newborn daughter slept quietly not far away. Woo attended St. Joseph’s Elementary before graduating from Charles E. London. She recalls how as a youth she went to her dad’s office to help him out. Seeing the relationships he forged with his patients is something she greatly admired. And that’s why she never considered any other line of work than dentistry. Like her father, she too knows that one day, she’ll be seeing the children of her patients, and perhaps

even their grandchildren. Danielle and her family are heavily involved with the Hearts of Gold Foundation—which her mother Lynn helped found. The foundation receives money from private donations and an annual golf tournament and directs it to students and children living in Vancouver’s east side, with money going to schools and community centres. Who is your inspiration? “I would say my mom, because she can juggle so many things. She’s a fantastic mom. She’s also a business owner, takes care of my grandma and raised a family. I appreciate everything she’s done now that I’m a mother, too.”

What are you most proud of? “Right now, it’s being a mom. Looking at her is pretty amazing, just to know that she comes from the both of us. (Apart from motherhood), I would definitely say that it’s being involved in patient care as a dentist. I treat my patients, and my relationship with them, like family.” What is your advice for others? “I think it’s to make the decisions ultimately that make you happy. At the end of the day, life is short.” Why did you pursue dentistry as a profession? “I’ve always been interested in healthcare. Dentistry is an opportunity for me to meet people and I enjoy interacting with people... building relationships with them.” If you weren’t a dentist, what would you be doing? “Medicine was not a back up for me. There was no back-up plan. I always knew I wanted a family, but I knew I wanted to do somethign for myself and other people. I just love what I do.” —Martin van den Hemel 845

Neil Zabala musician Age: 18 High School: Matthew McNair

From Page 3o

Most proud of? “I’m proud of many accomplishments but I’m mostly proud of how much Gentleman’s Vibe progressed. Our writing and our musicality in general has surely improved. Looking back on how we were when we first started continues to amaze me.” Advice? “Do ‘you’ and what makes you happy... I’ve had my share of being bullied because of the genre of music I decided to pursue, but as I kept at it, I have gotten better and the people that originally doubted me gave me the drive and motivation to prove them wrong.” Justin Villarosa (left) and Neal Zabala (right) of —Matthew Hoekstra Gentleman’s Vibe.

Born in the Philippines and raised in Richmond, Neal Zabala’s life lives in music—and music lives in his life. As half of the hip hop duo Gentleman’s Vibe, Zabala finds inspiration in his surroundings, his emotions and his experiences, and incorporates much of it in the verses he writes. In the same way, music is fuelling his young life. Nothing can compare, Zabala says, to the addictive effects of music. Besides constantly bettering himself as a musician and working hard with Justin Villarosa in building a following, Zabala lives a life most teenagers do— one filled with work, sports, the gym, video games, family and friends. Zabala is aiming to push boundaries with his music, as Gentleman’s Vibe works toward goals of more live shows, create new material and release an original EP.

Carol Zhang student/pianist

Jane Zhang student

Age: 16 High School: J.N. Burnett

Age: 19 High School: Matthew McNair

Carol Zhang spent her formative years in Shanghai, China. It was here, in one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, Zhang found the piano as a four-year-old. It became her passion. A Richmond resident since 2004, Zhang has been so dedicated to the instrument, she has little time for much else. She studies under Donna Fishwick and has been a member of the music teacher’s piano ensemble for the past five years. Zhang has garnered local, regional and national accolades for her performances and musicianship. Last year she travelled to Italy to participate in the Music Festival Perugia, where she performed in the famous Castiglione Del Lago and the Sala Dei Otari. Her most memorable performance so far was a concert in 2008 at Michael J. Fox Theatre. She performed the concerti of Mendelssohn in her first appearance with an orchestra. Zhang has her sights set on a future as a concert pianist, bringing music to life for people around the world. Inspiration? “I am most inspired by my parents... They always have given me support and encouraged me to do better. Because of them, I had the motivation to work harder. It is always great to have your family members support you in whatever you do and I am very thankful for them. “Someone else who has inspired me is my piano teacher. She has put so much

effort into me throughout these past few years, and without her help and assistance I wouldn’t be as successful as I am today.” Most proud of? “I am most proud of all the accomplishments I have made throughout these years. I believe that in order to achieve what you want, you have to keep working hard and to not give up no matter how tiring it may get. I believe that the amount of effort you put in will be the amount of success you will get in return.” Advice for others? “To just love whatever you do in life, whether it’s creating music or something else. If you play the piano, you have to really love to play. In general, just enjoy it.” —Matthew Hoekstra

Yoga, says the 19-year-old, teaches patience, compassion and the ability to stay calm. She reminds herself of these virtues frequently, and incorporates them into her busy life. Born in Hangzhou, China, Zhang moved to Vancouver in 1996 and spent her teenage years in Richmond, graduating from Matthew McNair. Now Montreal is home, where she’s been studying at McGill University since 2010. Zhang is enrolled in an interdisciplinary degree program focused on sustainability. She’s involved in a host of activities on campus, including participating in a competition to design a student-run sustainable cafe, and co-ordinating an arts and science conference. A former RView journalist with The Richmond Review, Zhang now delivers reports via the university’s co-op radio station, The McGill Daily and other campus publications. She’s taught English in Hong Kong, helped co-ordinate RichCity Idol and kept music central to her life.

Zabala is making music because he believes in it. And hopes that someday a major label will see that passion too. Inspiration?“There are three I look up to but all for different reasons: Drake for the honesty he portrays in his songwriting, J Cole for his ability to take his life experiences and make records out of it, and Kanye West for his creativity and the risks he’s willing to take to raise the bar higher.” Most proud of? “I’m proud of how much Gentleman’s Vibe has grown, how much we’ve accomplished and also how something that was nothing more than just a name, now has become a lifestyle. The connection that it helped us develop turned a friendship into a brotherhood. We are also truly blessed to have families that support us 110%.” Advice? “Patience. If you wait for something to come around it’ll take forever but if you let it happen, it’ll come sooner than you expected.” —Matthew Hoekstra

Jane Zhang has lots on her to-do list. Zhang has lots on her to-do list: study on an exchange in France, get involved in Richmond’s food systems community and do more media production and journalism. That, and start making art again. Who inspires you? “I am inspired by everyone I meet. I love meeting different people from different walks of life and I think it’s important to see something wonderful in everyone I meet. It helps me stay grounded and excited for life at the same time.” What are you most proud of? “I am most proud of staying true to what I believe in and setting an example for what I want to see. I

make sure that everything I put effort into doing is aligned with my interests and values. This is especially true for my dedication to sustainability. I believe the most genuine form of spreading positive change is by living out a model example.” What advice do you have for others? “Don’t take life so seriously... One of my favourite quotes is, ‘Success is getting what you want; happiness is wanting what you get.’ I presume it safe to say that people generally seek happiness, and people often see a link between success and happiness that doesn’t necessarily exist. I seek out what I like, so I like what I get.” What led you to pursue a degree rooted in sustainability? “Towards the end of my first year...my friend...introduced me to a bunch of cool people who somehow convinced me to switch into environmental studies. The start of this school year, I found out about the new sustainability program, which was a little more focused and tailored to my interdisciplinary interests, so I switched over. It’s currently a really small program (only 10 students enrolled thus far) but I love it.” —Martin van den Hemel

IS PERSONAL TRAINING RIGHT FOR ME? Hiring a personal trainer can be a difficult decision. If you are still on the fence about whether or not personal training is right for you, here are some things to consider that will help give you the confidence you need to take that next step: No Experience Necessary | Are you a newcomer to fitness? Trying to incorporate exercise into your life can be a daunting task. Your best path to success is finding a fitness routine that is not only sustainable but is also one that you like. If you are new to fitness, you may not know what you like. And that’s where a personal trainer can help. Fitness is a constantly evolving field. New ways to stay active and healthy are always being developed. A personal trainer can not only expose you to the latest trends in fitness, but can also create a program that is solely based on the activities you enjoy. Pushing Past the Plateaus | Are you a regular exerciser that is having difficulty taking your fitness to the next level? All too often, we find ourselves in a fitness rut where we do the same routine over and over again expecting different results. If this is you, then you are

experiencing what is called a “Plateau”. What your current program needs is a change that will challenge you in a safe and effective way. But how much is too much, and how hard is too hard? A personal trainer can assess your current routine and provide you with the direction you need to help you reach your full potential. Yes You Can | It’s never too late to start. Regardless of your age, or fitness level, anyone can experience the benefits of regular physical activity. Research shows that people who participate in regular exercise sleep better, have more energy, are better able to manage their body weight, and are less likely to develop chronic conditions such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease. If you are ready to make a change, our trainers at the Oval are here to provide the guidance and motivation needed to help you discover strength you didn’t know you had. For more information, contact Fitness Programmer, Portia Mann by phone at 778–296–1484 or by email at pmann@richmondoval.ca

7 REASONS TO CHOOSE

Results Oriented Programs We use the latest Canadian sport research to determine what we teach and how we teach it, to ensure every program has evidence–based rationale behind what we do.

Drives Future Success From greater enjoyment of your child’s gym class, recess and lunch–time activities to greater focus and performance in the classroom to enhanced on field sport performance, the Oval’s leading–edge Sport Camps are powerful vehicles that will drive your child’s future success.

Optimal Activity Challenges Oval Sport Camps take advantage of ‘biological windows of development’, a fancy way of stating that we introduce physical activities that the body will benefit from and learn most rapidly depending on the age and gender of the child.

Offered in partnership with DRIVE Basketball.

Builds Personal Confidence Oval Sport Camps focus on developing ‘Confidence in Action’: ensuring every child develops the body– control confidence (physical literacy) necessary to succeed in life and enjoy lifelong participation in sport and physical activity. Develops Exceptional People Oval programs develop great athletes and exceptional people, improving social skills, developing teamwork, problem solving and confidence, and decision making skills.

Teaches Movement FUNdamentals These are the key movements to all activities that Oval leaders teach through games and participation: run, jump, throw, agility balance and coordination. After all, without these fundamental movements, kids would not be able to participate in their favourite sports! Leaders Worth Following Our Oval Camp leaders are chosen for their strong personal character, high performance sport experience, and capacity to effectively communicate to youth, our leaders live and teach the positive values of sport.
