I REMEMBER WALKING through the gates of Kings Dominion for the first time as a teenager, feeling the excitement and charm of International Street as I looked up at the Eiffel Tower. There is something special about creating memories with your family at an amusement park, and Kings Dominion certainly was enchanting. Now, all these years later as we celebrate our 40th Anniversary, I get those same feelings walking through the park. It’s been important for us to uphold the traditions of the park all while keeping it new and exciting for our guests. This year is extremely special because we are able to do that in the best ways by bringing back some of the charm of the park’s past. The following pages celebrate the rich history of Kings Dominion and the many people who have helped shape the park over the years. I hope to see you on the midways this season. It’s the perfect time for reviving old memories and making some new ones. Sincerely,

Pat Jones Vice President/General Manager

BAND

Just wait until you get to Kings Dominion to experience the oncein-a-lifetime 40th Celebration. You’ll be amazed at all the new things to see, do, taste and share. EVENTS Make sure to visit Kings Dominion during the inaugural Spring Bloom Festival, which lasts through through May 18. Also serving as the official kick-off of the 40th Celebration, this event transforms International Street into a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors with thousands of blooms. Taste unique spring foods and beverages, enjoy toe-tapping entertainment on Saturdays and participate in our hands-on activities. Don’t miss it!

ATTRACTIONS The larger-than-life Floral Clock has been completely rebuilt and returns to its original location at the end of Center Street near the historic park carousel. Be prepared for an incredible burst of vibrant color. Safari Village (formerly the Congo areas of the park) has returned with exciting improvements to the area’s signature rides, Volcano: The Blast Coaster and Anaconda. Ruby, a newly rehabbed carousel horse, was painted especially for the 40th Celebration, and will join the historic carousel that’s been in operation since 1917 and at Kings Dominion since 1975. The installation of Ruby begins a multi-year

4

restoration of all carousel horses. Candy Apple Grove, one of the park’s original classic midways, returns with a bushel of new surprises. And Walk of Memories is a special exhibit that takes us back through Kings Dominion’s rich history. International Street fountain is even more magical with new lighting and fanciful enhancements. Plus, Dinosaurs Alive! is now free for Gold and Platinum Season Passholders.

RIDES Volcano: The Blast Coaster has a new-and-improved entrance and exit so you can ride it again and again. Also this year marks the first of a multi-year project to refresh the look of the mountain. Anaconda roller coaster looks even more sinister with fresh green, red and yellow paint.

ENTERTAINMENT The infamous strolling Clown Band is back from the 1980s with even more wacky shenanigans. Look for this crazy crew roaming throughout the park. Do you remember the

Eat Like a Fit King New healthful options, the return of old favorites and a new executive chef, too In addition to new décor and structures, food locations will offer more healthful, locally sourced products; gluten-free original Clown Band? Share your stories and photos on social media using the hashtag #KD40. The park is turning back the clock and bringing 40 years of memories to life on stage with its new live show — “#KD40 on Stage.” From the 1970s to today, this high energy show celebrates not only the greatest hits that have defined the last 40 years but also takes you on a journey through the rich history that has made Kings Dominion Virginia’s destination for family fun! When the sun sets, the fun ignites during “Dominion at Dusk” — a KD40 nighttime celebration! End your day of fun at Kings Dominion with an immersive nighttime experience. To honor 40 years of fun you have to throw quite a party and our nighttime celebration is bursting with energy, vibrant lights, live singing and dancing and is all capped off with a spectacular fireworks display. The Singing Mushrooms are back by popular demand to kick off the 40th Celebration. A family favorite and park icon, these four colorful chums and the infamous frog croon their favorite barbershop tunes.

COMMEMORATIVE COLLECTIBLES Remember your 40th Celebration visit with special merchandise emblazoned with the commemorative logo. It’s available in the 40th Celebration Merchandise Store within Starlight Gifts. You also can collect and trade specially designed pins commemorating our 40th Celebration. menu options; new menu items; and some old favorites such as the blue ice cream. Plus, the park will add an executive chef. “We want to make sure that we are the best of the best and offering the highest quality and experience to our guests, and I think this is a big step in that direction,” says Jacob Rhoten, director of food. An old-fashioned soda shop called Fountain & Floats is being added next to the Border Café, a Mexican restaurant that will feature a made-to-order menu this year. The soda shop will offer ice cream cones, floats, malts, milkshakes and several Coca-Cola products. “We’re not just going to pour a drink and add a little flavor to it,” Rhoten says. “We’re going to do it the old-school soda jerk style … a little bit of a show.” Also new are an All-Day Dining pass; Panino e Dolce with fresh made sandwiches, cakes and pastries; an improved catering area and menu; and an Auntie Anne’s Pretzels shop.

Dedicated to

Fun

From naming roller coasters to working the Lion Safari, these longtime employees have worn many hats within Kings Dominion. Tony Johnson, corporate director of operations A former physical education teacher at Stonewall Jackson Middle School and Lee-Davis High School in Mechanicsville, Tony Johnson came to Kings Dominion in 1974 looking for a change. He started working for the park while he was still a teacher and decided to make it a permanent career, rising in the ranks to where he is today. “I had an opportunity here to come and also teach here in one way or another,” Johnson says. “We have great people here, and I enjoyed working with those folks, so the transition was really easy.” Johnson remembers back when the park was mostly an open field with only three roller coasters. Now there are 14 thrill coasters. In 1974,

8

he was working at Lion Country Safari through which visitors could drive their vehicle in an area that featured lions. “The stories about the lions biting and puncturing the tires are true. The ostriches were quite different. They would break the antennas off the cars, and they would eat the windshield wiper blades, so we ended up paying for a lot of those,” Johnson says.

“The stories about the lions biting and puncturing the tires are true.”

Jim Copp, former vice president of finance and administration During his 30 years at the park, Jim Copp went beyond crunching numbers. He has swept trash, processed season passes, sold tickets and even served beer during Jimmy Buffett concerts.

Copp says his main contribution to the park was coming up with the name for the Rebel Yell roller coaster during a meeting. “I had seen a bottle of Rebel Yell whiskey somewhere, and I said, ‘What about Rebel Yell?’ and everybody said, ‘That’s it,’” Copp says. “And I still think it’s the best coaster we’ve got.” While Copp has many pleasant memories of his time at the park, he vividly remembers one day in particular, May 3, 1975, opening day. Copp says traffic was backed up for miles in all directions, and the parking lot was packed to capacity. “That first weekend, we didn’t get the money counted until Thursday … because it was just so chaotic.” Copp commemorated the day by saving his 1975 calendar, which he still has. He says it’s hard to believe it has been 40 years since the park opened, reminiscing about how the grounds initially housed cornfields and the only buildings were on International Street. “It’s just amazing walking around to see what it looks like and how much different it is now than it was. It gets better every year. It’s exciting to see that.”

“I’m hauling Yogi Bear, Boo Boo, Singing Mushrooms and a frog. And [the officer] says, ‘Son, mind if I have a look at that?’”

‘What about

Rebel Yell?’

Warren Durret, ride maintenance contractor On Warren Durret’s very first day at the park in 1973, he began assisting in the construction of the Rebel Yell. “That was quite an event building that ride,” Durret says. “The very first time the train was sent out we were just excited that it actually came back to the station like it was supposed to.” Durret drove to California in 1976 to pick up the original Singing Mushrooms that resided under the former Sky Ride. In an effort to reduce shipping time, Durret decided to drive them back to the park. He says he was pulled for speeding three times. The third time, the police officer asked him what he was hauling.

“I said, ‘I’m hauling Yogi Bear, Boo Boo, Singing Mushrooms and a frog.’ And he says, ‘Son, mind if I have a look at that?’” When it was discovered that Durret was in fact telling the truth, he got away with a warning. Now Durret is installing the new set of Singing Mushrooms. Durret has assisted with the construction and maintenance of many of the rides at the park, some of which are no longer there. He credits the off-season for the park’s smooth operation during the summer. “There’s an enormous amount of work done in the winter,” says Durret, who retired in 2006 but has returned as a contractor.

Jacob Rhoten, director of food This year marks the 17th season that Jacob Rhoten has worked at the park. He started as an intern in 1996 and took on a full-time position when it was available in 2001. He was promoted to director of food in January 2007. For the 40th anniversary, the park is going to see a revamped menu including more organic, locally sourced and gluten-free items. An executive chef is being added. The menu for group sales clients has been expanded, and the amount of time allotted for groups in the catered event area has been increased. “[It’s] much more of a catered, hotel type of an experience versus a backyard picnic type of experience,” says Rhoten. Photos by Jay Paul; Bottom right: Photo by Matthew Owens

kings_dominion_mockup.indd 9

This is just the tip of the iceberg for the changes coming to the park’s food program. Some restaurants are reverting to their original names, and patrons will see the return of some old menu favorites. He recalls a day when he was walking behind a family of four, and their little girl wanted a souvenir cup, but the parents couldn’t afford all four cups. Rhoten says he treated so every family member got their own cup. “You try to make someone’s day as much as possible. That made a huge difference to [that family] and I hope created a memory for them that will last for a long time,” Rhoten says.

FOUR DECADES OF

THRILLS In 1974, Lion Country Safari opened as a preview attraction to Kings Dominion. Guests were able to drive their vehicles through a three-mile stretch on the preserve and witness hundreds of wild animals up close.

1970s

On Oct. 1, 1972, developers broke ground on the 400-acre amusement park. They named it Kings Dominion after its sister park, Kings Island.

This decade saw the construction and opening of the first largescale amusement park in Virginia – and millions of captivated guests. Were you one of these guests in the 1970s?

Kings Dominion Preview supplement to the Sunday, May 18, 1975 edition of the Richmond Times-Dispatch

On May 3, 1975, the dream of Kings Dominion became a reality as the general manager opened the doors to the public. During its Inaugural Season, the park entertained more than 1.5 million guests.

Diamond Falls water ride opened in 1985, cascading families over a 70-foot waterfall into the lake below and hurling a giant wave of water over guests on the observation decks above.

1980s

Kings Dominion exploded in the ’80s with numerous enhancements, tech-savvy attractions and major attendance records. In 1986, Kings Dominion achieved a monumental milestone, entertaining 2 million guests in a single season. Shockwave, the first stand-up roller coaster on the East Coast, opened and is still in operation today.

The Sky Pilot took flight in 1989, and let guests set their own path for adventure. From 90 feet in the air, riders determined their own flight pattern – a smooth flight or a 360degree barrel roll.

The Avalanche debuted in 1988. It allows guests to experience what’s it’s like to be a member of an Olympic bobsled team, twisting and turning at incredible speeds to the finish.

1990s

Did you visit Kings Dominion in the ’90s? If so, you’ll remember craziness like The Hurler, green slime and The Outer Limits: Flight of Fear. You may also remember your first slippery slide at Hurricane Reef Water Park.

The Anaconda, a one-of-a-kind monster of a steel roller coaster, was unleashed in 1991. Still in operation, this speeding serpent catapults riders through an underwater tunnel.

Paramount Communications, Inc. purchased Kings Entertainment, the parent company of Kings Dominion in 1993. Now aligned with Hollywood, the park was renamed Paramount’s Kings Dominion and introduced bigger-than-life, moviethemed experiences.

In 1994, Viacom International, Inc. purchased Paramount Communications, Inc. From the new relationship came Nickelodeon Splat City™ and its infamous, messy green slime.

KidZville, a town built just for the younger set, replaced HannaBarbera™ Land in 1997. The Taxi Jam Coaster, designed to be a child’s first roller coaster, opened here.

14

Volcano: The Blast Coaster, garnered international acclaim in 1998 as the world’s fastest suspended roller coaster.

2000s and beyond

Kings Dominion experienced an incredible explosion of amazing new rides and attractions in the 2000s. Were you there to take it all in?

HyperSonic XLC, the world’s first compressed-air launch coaster, stunned roller coaster enthusiasts with zero-gravity airtime and unbelievable freefall sensations in 2001.

Pipeline Peak opened in WaterWorks Water Park, offering four new extreme water slides, including Night Slider, the world’s tallest, enclosed dark tube slide at the time.

In 2013, Planet Snoopy debuted eight new rides for a total of 18 and set a record as the world’s largest PEANUTS™- themed children’s area.

Snoopy’s Junction

Intimidator 305™ dominated industry headlines in 2010 as the tallest and fastest roller coaster of its kind on the East Coast. With a towering height of 305 feet and lightening speeds of 90 miles per hour, it’s a must for thrill seekers. Celebrating 40 Years

GEORGE F. SADLER

In 1988, Tyler Darden took a position at Kings Dominion as a ride operator for the Rebel Yell. A lover of art and design, it didn’t take him long to discover he would enjoy a job as a caricature artist. The following year, Darden applied for the position and was hired. Darden would spend the next five years depicting visitors to the park. “Creating something that people enjoyed, to me it was just fantastic, because caricatures are something that make people really happy. They know what they are in for when they sit down, and they want something that looks funny.” Upon graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in illustration and graphic design and a minor in photography, Darden left Kings Dominion to pursue a career in graphic arts, becoming a staff artist at the Richmond TimesDispatch and then the art director for publications such as Richmond magazine and Virginia Living. He now is the owner and creative director of Tyler Darden Studio and an adjunct professor at VCU, teaching graphic arts classes. He hasn’t given up his love of caricatures though, still drawing them at his children’s school and at church events.

From 1976 to 1978, George F. Sadler honed his instrumental skills as part of the original clown band that roved the grounds of Kings Dominion. Called the Kings of Komedy, Sadler and his bandmates performed six shows a day, six days a week, entertaining audiences with playful antics and musical scores. Sadler was enrolled in the music education program at Concord University in Athens, W.Va. He would come home during the summers to perform at Kings Dominion. “I could look forward to being out there doing what I loved to do, performing with people that I had bonded with and really enjoyed being around,” says Sadler. Sadler would go on to have a 32-year career with Hanover County Public Schools, serving as band director at Lee-Davis High School, Chickahominy Middle School, Atlee High School, and Oak Knoll Middle School. He was assistant principal of Hanover High School when it opened in 2003. Sadler became the school’s principal in 2007. He retired from the public school system in 2012. Today Sadler is an assistant principal at Saint Bridget Catholic School and plays music with The Remnants, a 1970s rock and soul band. For the 40th anniversary of the park, a new clown band will perform, and Sadler says he plans to see them.

Katie Monfalcone Katie Monfalcone has been dancing since age 2. Upon receiving her degree in dance from East Carolina University in 2004, Monfalcone became a dance instructor at Ann Catherine Cross School of Dance, the dance studio she attended as a girl. When she had the opportunity to audition to be a performer at Kings Dominion, she took it. She performed in the 2005 “Tuned In!” show, dancing and singing songs that correlated with TV channels such as BET. Monfalcone was dance captain, so she also assisted with choreography and making sure the show ran smoothly. “It really was probably one of the better summers that I remember, even though we sweated like crazy and worked our tails off,” says Monfalcone. That same year, Monfalcone and some of her castmates were selected to perform a Christmas-themed show at Carowinds Winterfest in Charlotte, N. C. About three years after leaving Kings Dominion, she also performed in a show called “We Are Artists” at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen. In 2012, Monfalcone became a substitute dance instructor at Encore Performing Arts Studio. She teaches there in addition to her job at Capital One.

Ryan Obermeier Ryan Obermeier was only 16 when he auditioned to be a performer at Kings Dominion in 2002. He spent five seasons at the park, performing in multiple shows including “VIBE,” “Young Country,” “School of Rock” and “Twistin’ to the ’60s.”

“Not only did [Kings Dominion] give me the experience, it gave me such a confidence. I was so young and I was learning every day from the people I was working with,” says Obermeier. In between jobs at Kings Dominion, Obermeier performed on the Norwegian Cruise Line. In 2007 upon completing his final season with the park, he moved to New York and performed in a Broadway tour of “Hairspray.” He also has done the offBroadway shows “Icon” and “Naked Boys Singing” and multiple regional productions such as “Grease,” “Guys and Dolls” and “Fame.” He also interned for two different casting agents while in New York, serving as a casting assistant for “The Musical of Musicals,” which is still continuing its off-Broadway run. Obermeier moved to — Ryan Obermeier Los Angeles nine months ago to pursue his goal of becoming a casting director. He has worked on MTV television shows and just finished work as a production assistant for the TNT reality show “Inside Job.”

“Not only did [Kings Dominion] give me the experience, it gave me such a confidence.”

Heather Dee Perry For Heather Dee Perry, her time at Kings Dominion was only the beginning of an accomplished career in entertainment. At only 18, she was the youngest performer at the park in 1992, taking on the role of magician’s assistant in the show “It’s Magic.” “My Kings Dominion experience was unbelievably positive,” Perry says. “Once I had that confidence that I could perform, I realized, OK, if you have people [enjoy it] like that, then there is so much more potential to go further.” That’s exactly what Perry did, performing on the Caribbean cruise ship SS Norway that same year before joining the world cruise ship Crown Odyssey for nine months. She has also performed in a Broadway touring show of “The Will Rogers Follies,” starring Pat Boone. She was a Radio City Music Hall Rockette for eight years and toured with Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band for eight years. Perry is working on a solo album, slated for release this fall. It has been in the works since 2008, and Perry says it will feature collaborations with Grammy Award-winning instrumentalists. You can listen to Perry’s single “Andromeda Love” at soundcloud.com/heather-d-perry/andromeda-love. Celebrating 40 Years

This was the fourth wooden roller coaster to be built at the park. It was part of a former Wayne’s World themed area, which has now become part of Candy Apple Grove.

This ride was the first in the world to be a linear induction motor (LIM), launch coaster. It features 3,000 feet of track in total darkness.

Great Pumpkin Coaster Opened: 1997 This ride debuted as Taxi Jam Coaster and was designed to be a first roller coaster ride for children. The name was changed in 2013 as part of the Peanuts-themed area.

This coaster was the world’s first looping roller coaster that had a tunnel that went underwater. It features six loops including a 360 degree vertical loop upon exiting the underwater tunnel.

Backlot Stunt Coaster Opened: 2006 Ricochet Opened: 2002 This was the 12th roller coaster built at the park. It features a 50-foot drop and reaches speeds up to 35 mph. A signature of this ride is its hairpin turns and surprising twists.

This coaster resembles the experience of being behind the wheel during a stunt car chase scene. It debuted as The Italian Job Turbo Coaster, but was later renamed.

Volcano: The Blast Coaster Opened: 1998 When this ride debuted it was the world’s fastest suspended roller coaster. It was built around the fiberglass Lost World Mountain, which already resided in the park.

Intimidator 305 Opened: 2010 At 305 feet at its highest point, this ride is the tallest and fastest coaster on the East Coast. It was named after the late NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, whose nickname was “The Intimidator.”

Dominator Opened: 2008 Currently this ride has the world record as being the largest floorless roller coaster at 4,210 feet. It also has one of the world’s largest vertical loops.

WE ASKED FOR YOUR

KD MEMORIES, AND HERE’S WHAT YOU HAD TO SAY.

“I loved the Anaconda. There’s a point at which you feel like you’re about to fall into the lake and that is always exhilarating.” —David Zavelsky

“I had a ball [on the Anaconda]. [Because] my father worked so much, it was so great being able to spend that time with him.”

Linda Grimes started visiting Kings Dominion when they opened in 1974. Grimes sold her chimpanzee, Michelle, to the park because she didn’t like leaving her alone during the day. “When they opened, I thought it was a good opportunity. She was able to be in her own environment.”

— Andre Thomas

“I’m really a fan of exotic roller coasters, and I felt like [the Intimidator 305] was very wild with the height and [with] the speed that the roller coaster travels.” — Asia McFadden

Cheri Spence first went on the Rebel Yell 31 years ago at the age of 24. “I have good memories of riding it and trying to keep my hands up the whole time.” She plans to take her 4-year-old grandson to the park this season.
