DESIGNER HOUSE COMMITTEE

Welcome to Pineapple Acre, the 2016 Richmond Symphony Orchestra League’s 17th Designer House. Located in historic Ginter Park, this masterpiece home, one of Richmond’s finest, was designed by Courtenay Somerville Welton in 1929 for David Satterfield Jr. The classic Georgian revival home, located on just over an acre, will be transformed by some of our finest interior and exterior designers. With five bedrooms, three-and-a-half baths, three floors, formal gardens with a terrace, a swimming pool, a fountain and garden paths, we have lots to show! The Honorable Viola and Dr. Archer Baskerville have owned the property for more than 30 years and are graciously sharing this wonderful home as our largest biennial fundraiser in support of the Richmond Symphony. We are again privileged to have Kroger as our Title Sponsor. We are very appreciative of our Gold Sponsor, Anne Carter & Walter R. Robins, Jr. Foundation; our Silver Sponsor, Elizabeth G. Schneider Charitable Trust; our Bronze Sponsor, The Peachtree House Foundation; our Media Sponsor, Richmond magazine/R•Home magazine; and our Preferred Beer Sponsor, Hardywood. We also graciously thank you for touring our Designer House and for participating in the many evening events, enjoying lunch on the terrace in the Café, and shopping in our Boutique filled with unique gifts. Our house is made fabulous by the talent and vision of our interior and exterior designers — a group with amazing talent. Thank you, designers! The Richmond Symphony Orchestra League is a nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating a volunteer membership that supports the Richmond Symphony through fundraising, education and community involvement. On behalf of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra League Board of Directors and the Designer House Committee, Welcome to Pineapple Acre!

In 1925, Welton wrote an article for “The Southern Architect and Building News” titled “Houses of the Georgian Period.” In it, he described classic characteristics of the style: the Flemish bond pattern of bricks, arched windows and much paneling. All of these features were incorporated into the Satterfields’ house.

EARLY DAYS The Satterfield family moved into the house with two sons, David III and Richard (known as Dick), when the boys were in grade school. The lovely, spacious home was perfect for entertaining both business associates and personal friends. Anne Satterfield, who was married to David III »

Anne Satterfield says she still has a small Chippendale sofa that was on the second-floor landing; other items await a new generation: “They’re in storage for my grandson,” she says.

MOVING ON

IN THE LATE 1800S, Richmonders were ready to escape the dirt and noise of the center city. The first city suburbs, Highland Park and Barton Heights, began to attract residents as early as the late 1880s. These neighborhoods, on the city’s North Side, were accessible via streetcar and had homes built on moderately sized lots, so they were available to both workingand middle-class families. But businessman Lewis W. Ginter, mindful of those options, focused his attention on Henrico County, just outside the city limits. “Ginter was getting a suburb for the upper class,” says Anne Thorn, longtime

editor of the Ginter Park Residents Association newsletter. “There wasn’t trolley service there Lewis Ginter at the time, and land was cheap.” Ginter began to build his neighborhood with the donation of land to Union Theological Seminary, which was looking to leave its original location at HampdenSydney College. While philanthropic, the donation was also strategic, Thorn says. “The seminary is going to give you the type of neighbors that you, as an upper-class person, want to have,” says Thorn, who is at work, with Charlie Brock, on a book about the area’s origins: The Pioneers of Ginter Park. Once the seminary committed, Ginter pushed to have the streetcar

line extended. By June 1897, service was available as far north as Laburnum Avenue, west to Hermitage and north to Lakeside Park. But Ginter died Oct. 2, 1897, leaving the Sherwood Land Co. — which had begun work on Ginter Park as well as another neighborhood, Sherwood Park — in the care of his heirs, three nieces and a nephew. (His companion, John Pope, predeceased him.) It took until 1906 for the Lewis Ginter Land and Improvement Company to be established. Niece Grace Arents, who Thorn notes had ample business acumen from time spent with her generous uncle, took the helm, even though a man’s name was always atop the letterhead. Her slogan, “City conveniences and country advantages,” was a success. And so was the neighborhood. —PPC

The home’s next owners were Florence and Edgar Phillips Jr., who purchased the house in 1950. They carried on the traditions of big celebrations and “made a mockery” of the formal first floor, says grandson Bryan Bostic. “There were eight rambling [grandkids] making a lot of noise,” he says. “We used to slide down the staircase railing.” »

house. “We knew we might want to stay until we were wheeled out, so we wanted options.” One of the options the Baskervilles created was a third-floor master suite with a full bath able to accommodate an oversize floating tub. “It became our little hideaway,” she says, adding that the couple was thrilled to find pine floors on the third level, hidden under cork tile. (The first two floors are oak.) Over time, the Baskervilles updated the kitchen and bathrooms, and kept up with the ongoing maintenance that an older home requires. “We regarded ourselves as caretakers of a fine piece of property,” Baskerville says. “All the work that was done was done by

licensed professionals.” The Baskervilles also paid close attention to the home’s grounds, which they knew could be as dramatic as the house itself. They removed trees — “My husband nearly died when we took out a huge pecan tree,” she says — because they wanted to “fully execute” the original plans for the backyard and needed both air and light. In 1990, the yard won designer Larry D. Maxey, VSLD, first place in the residential division of the “Keep Virginia Beautiful” competition. And, like the Satterfields and Phillips before them, the Baskervilles used the home for entertaining. Baskerville recalls one party, celebrating a business anniversary for her husband, where they filled the backyard with food tents, thatched huts and music from a Jamaican steeldrum band. She says she and her husband were committed to the house because it is one of Richmond’s “gems” in a “very diverse and desirable” neighborhood. She’s happy to make the house available to the Richmond Symphony Orchestra League because of the work the League does within the community, specifically to support the Symphony which provides instruments to students in city schools. Plus, she says, “I knew it would be well done.” “There are so many appealing aspects of the 2016 RSOL Designer House,” Brantley says. “The rooms will be styled for contemporary living. The RSOL café and the boutique will offer guests the opportunity to linger and enjoy the ambiance. People will not want to miss the music in the garden on Thirsty Thursdays and during other special events.” Baskerville isn’t surprised that the house she named “Pineapple Acre” — as a testament to the property’s size and its air of hospitality — has been a place of welcome for decades. She believes that spirit of openness carries through the Designer House program and hopes it will continue. “We wanted to start its next chapter with a wonderful opening,” she says. “The most important outcome of this process is that the next steward of the property is as conscientious concerning its care and preservation as we were.”

HOW DOES DESIGNING FOR AN OLDER HOME DIFFER FROM DECORATING A BRAND-NEW SPACE? History and architecture have a voice … and you have to listen to that. This house is beautifully situated on a generous lot. It’s sophisticated and classic.

The foyer is spacious, and there’s a deep curved staircase. I wanted to take advantage of the gracious proportions and the opportunity to impact the initial emotions of visitors. I wanted to make a good first impression!

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE POWDER ROOM? There’s something about this little utilitarian afterthought! These spaces are easy to forget, but almost every guest in the house uses it. You can do a lot with it, since you’re not spending a lot of time there.

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE?

Items pictured may not appear in final rooms. Contact designer for details.

Being that I work on a lot of older spaces, I try hard not to undo what’s good. I kept the original tile and a corner sink that’s porcelain over cast iron. The best thing is to do as little as possible without harming the space.

WHAT KIND OF MOOD WERE YOU TRYING TO EVOKE? Over the top! I was fortunate enough to stay at the Inn at Little Washington in a room with a bathroom that was apparently inspired by something at Versailles, and that’s what I thought of.

In older homes, you’re working with a preset floor plan and layout, and you have challenges like plaster and lathing, uneven floors, etc. With a new house, you have an upper hand where you can work with the customer from the beginning.

The house has a relatively small garage which would have been typical when that house was built… it was a little bit of a challenge to provide good storage without taking up too much of the space.

WHAT KIND OF MOOD WERE YOU TRYING TO EVOKE? Peace and harmony. I hear from customers all the time that their closet is a nice start to their day. They’ve never had that kind of organization.

WHAT’S THE “STEAL THIS IDEA” FEATURE GUESTS CAN TAKE AWAY? Think about vertical space. If you have a house with 9-foot or 10-foot ceilings, let’s go up.

HOW DOES DESIGNING FOR AN OLDER HOME DIFFER FROM DECORATING A BRAND-NEW SPACE? Mathe: There are pros and cons to both. With an older space, you have character and charm.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF THE HOUSE? Mathe: Gorgeous! Conrad: Jaw-dropping!

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE?

Items pictured may not appear in final rooms. Contact designer for details.

Mathe: The bathroom is an obvious addition. It breaks up the symmetry of the windows. Also, the ceilings are lower on the second floor, which affects light fixture selection.

HOW DOES YOUR DESIGN REFLECT CURRENT TRENDS? Conrad: Bold colors and using brushed gold — on the light fixtures, in the window-treatment fabric and on the ceiling.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS PARTICULAR ROOM? I have a niche with bathrooms — I’ve done almost 30 bathrooms in four years. This bathroom in particular, the layout wasn’t living up to its full potential. There was a puzzle in the room.

The color and the layout. Initially, you think we need a complete redo. But time and budget constraints mean that’s not always an option.

HOW DOES YOUR DESIGN REFLECT CURRENT TRENDS? I’m going to modernize it with bold color — a bold emerald green — and change to soft gold fixtures. It will become traditional with contemporary graphic accents.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN ELEMENT? The color. I love rich, saturated color.

I love it! It’s stately — not in a grand way, but in an elegant way.

HOW DOES YOUR DESIGN REFLECT CURRENT TRENDS? It is modern but it is classic. The colors I chose are actually neutral to give it a fresher and timeless appeal. My thought was to make it fresh and beautiful — to make it a “now” room.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN ELEMENT? The color palette.

WHAT WILL SURPRISE PEOPLE? I think they’re going to like the room and they’re not going to be sure why. You don’t want to look overly decorated. You just want to walk in a room and say, “This feels good.”

Honestly, we said if we’re going to do this, we’re going to challenge ourselves by choosing a room in need of a big overhaul. We thought the library would show how we can offer a true departure from the existing feeling of the space.

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE? The room’s dimensions. It’s long and narrow, which makes furniture placement with easy accessibility a challenge.

WHAT’S THE “STEAL THIS IDEA” FEATURE THAT GUESTS CAN TAKE AWAY? I’d love for people to re-create the wallpaper effect at home by painting the wall a solid color and then letting their imagination and paintbrush take over.

My challenge is simply keeping plants watered. When you’re working with Mother Nature, you’ve got to work with what you get. So I am going to do very formal containers packed full with succulents.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR DESIGN? There are thousands of succulents to choose from. It’s fun to try to decide.

WHAT’S THE “STEAL THIS IDEA” FEATURE THAT YOU HOPE GUESTS TAKE AWAY? The key thing for succulents is that they don’t need much water at all. They do need a lot of sun, but they’ll grow in just about anything.

It doesn’t! Currently, there’s a big effort to incorporate native plants, but that gives designs a looser look, and I wanted symmetry.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR DESIGN? The circle parterre, which is formal and geometric. I’m not using boxwood because it’s not shade-tolerant, and I have a combination of textures and colors.

HOW DOES DESIGNING FOR AN OLDER HOME DIFFER FROM DECORATING BRAND-NEW SPACE? With any project, you want to stay true to the context. You want to think about function and how it will be used. There’s a historical charm you don’t want to lose.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF THE SPACE?

I stepped onto the back patio and thought, “Wow!” I couldn’t help but think of an English garden filled with poppies, so I’m using a lot of scarlet in my design.

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE? How to keep the gazebo’s secret element intact. I want it to be cozy, private, intimate.

I hope it will help people be bolder in their color choices for outdoor spaces. Plus, you can do custom work outdoors — you just have to think outside the box. Technology allows us to do so much more than we used to do with dyed acrylic fabrics.

ACCENT LIGHTING ON PLANTERS

We have to apply light to what’s already there. Older landscapes have bigger trees, bigger plants.

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE? Having enough light. During the day, you see everything. At night, you only see what you put light on, so we have to “rebuild” the spaces.

HOW DOES YOUR DESIGN REFLECT CURRENT TRENDS? The space is arranged into “rooms,” which shows that the current trend of creating outdoor rooms isn’t new. Also, people want comfortable entertaining — relaxing, yet a little bit fun and also energetic. That will affect the composition and fixtures we use.

WHAT WILL SURPRISE PEOPLE?

How many fixtures we’ll use. It’s natural to assume that the more fixtures you have, the brighter it is. But the more fixtures we have, the more control we have. We can use lower light levels and hide them.
