2019 ALFA ROMEO GIULIA A super sedan that’s stunning, powerful and mercilessly addicting BY JIM PRUETER
VITAL STATS: Base price: $38,295 Price as tested: $79,495
The very first things that strike you about the Italian-bred Alfa Romeo Giulia sports sedan are its stellar good looks, the way it sits on the ground, and its overall stage presence. The four-door Giulia comes in six flavors – five are powered by a 280-horsepower, 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine – and the Giulia Quadrifoglio tested here, powered by a monstrous 505-horsepower, 2.9-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 that goes from zero to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 191 mph. Both variants deliver flawless, irreproachable handling and ride quality wrapped in a centerfold-worthy body. Front and rear bumpers are short with body panels stretched tight across its muscular frame. The sloping hood beautifully connects to Alfa’s signature V-shaped grille, easily making it the best-looking vehicle in its segment. The upscale interior is expertly designed, with fine leather and soft-touch plastics taking centerstage in the cabin. The leather seats are comfortable and heavily bolstered with ample

adjustment options. The standard equipment is substantial, including an 8.8-inch touch screen with navigation, leather dash and upper doors; genuine carbon fiber trim; and a full range of advanced safety features. While its immense horsepower and rocket-sled acceleration is more than impressive, what really stands out is the sports car precise handling. It corners flat with virtually zero body roll. The steering is cutting-edge and the eightspeed automatic transmission is nearly perfect, especially when “dynamic” or “race mode” settings are engaged. Road noise is muted and the visibility is excellent. For some drivers, the powerful and precise Brembo brakes may feel a bit sensitive, but the agile, highly-tuned steering makes up for any flaws. The Giulia is a beacon for those willing to forego any of the cliche luxurious, subjacent sedans from BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. Those who carve their own path with the Alfa Romeo will be more than well-rewarded.
