Sensational selfie spots across Flagstaff

From fields of yellow wildflowers and acres of Aspen trees, to perfectly preserved national monuments and majestic mountainsides, Flagstaff boasts some of the most picturesque landscapes in Arizona. In addition to the more nature-focused photo-worthy locales, there are also a bevy of whimsical and wonderful spots for a selfie.

Flagstaff Visitor Center

Though built in what was the city’s train depot back in 1926, the visitor center itself is not the main reason to seek out a selfie here. The photo-op is just outside the center, which boasts a vivid 20-foot mural on the group paying homage to Route 66. For those who may not know, Flagstaff is situated along Route 66, one of the original highways in the United States. Its mystic and symbolism as American’s “Mother Road” has been detailed in popular culture for more than 70 years in everything from songs to literature. www.flagstaffarizona.org.

Mother Road Brewing Company

As with the visitor center, Mother Road Brewing Company is a love letter to all things along Route 66. One of its coolest visuals and sneaky best selfie spots is located just off Mother Road’s entrance behind a mature maple tree. It is a wooden post with colorfully painted directional markers and distances to find all of the other breweries in the city as well as exact mileage to other major cities along Route 66 that helped inspire various brews. Among them is Shamrock, Texas, home to the historic Tower Station and U-Drop Inn Café, which inspired Mother Road’s first canned beer, Tower Station IPA. www.motherroadbeer.com.

Americana Motor Hotel

This newly opened lodging option in Flagstaff pays homage to the region’s deep ties to astronomy, extraordinary surrounding nature, and location along Route 66. As a result, its aesthetic is equal parts utopian optimism and retro-chic. Do not miss the chance to take a photo or two in the lobby in particular, a dizzyingly colorful blend of geometric shapes, boldly striped walls, and retro-inspired furniture capped off with an eccentric mural of a groovy spaceship gliding along the Arizona desert. www.americanamotorhotel.com.

The Sound of Flight

At 4,500-square-feet and three stories tall, this mural – emblazoned across the east wall of the Orpheum Theater – is the largest in Arizona. It was painted by Sky Black, R.E. Wall, and Maggie Dewar over the course of two years and was completed in 2015. Visually, it depicts hundreds of birds flying out of a piano, soaring past works of art including Michelangelo’s David and Rodin’s Thinker before disappearing into the Grand Canyon. There are several meanings in the work, including using it as a metaphor for the buildup and climax of a song, and visitors are welcome to take photographs with it at every angle. www.orpheumflagstaff. com.

True Blue NAU Mural

Located on Leroux Street between Route 66 and Aspen Avenue, this mural – painted by “Mural Joe” Cornelius – bridges Northern Arizona University with the greater community. Completed in 2012, it depicts school visuals including the Lumberjack mascot and learning as well as traditions including football games and the “running of the freshmen.” www.nau.edu.
