classic comfort

Introducing the Viking lounge chair by Stig Christensen, Denmark

Denmark has long been considered the capital of contemporary chair design and designer, Stig Christensen, does not disappoint with his new Viking lounge chair. Inspiration for this chair clearly comes from the Danish masters of the 1950’s and 60’s, while modern aesthetics are evident as well. Comfort is excellent with a deep cushioned seat and the perfect pitch of the back.

Viking is painstakingly handcrafted in Portugal by skilled artisans using only the finest materials, including solid American walnut and luxurious top-grain leathers. Attention to detail is meticulous.

This is certainly a chair any connoisseur of classic Scandinavian or mid-century design will appreciate. Available from stock in black, red and taupe and very well priced at only $2849 each.

They say spring is a time for new beginnings, but the beautiful season is also known for “spring cleaning.” I’m pretty into constantly decluttering, but I like to do a few big refreshes around the house each year.

One location in the house that constantly needs adjusting is one’s closet. As the weather warms up, there’s plenty of new trends and –although March brought cooler temperatures and spring showers – we’re now trading our pants and sweaters for shorts and tank tops. Those in search of seasonal trends should look no further than page 50, where we caught up with five local designers, aka trendsetters. From hats (check out Ellie White of Mill & Habs on the cover!) and jewelry, to streetwear and golf attire, these designers are sharing all about their brands, passion for design and advice for aspiring artists.

April, in particular, is also a month that many people turn their attention to the environment thanks to Earth Day (April 22). We’re talking simple ways to help Mother Earth in everyday life (page 70) and got to know a local catering company that takes sustainability seriously (page 40). Though not nature related, we’re also “going green” in terms of home decor (page 80), with vibrant dishes at local restaurants (page 108), and at a new restaurant with a real living tree inside of it (page 122).

Additional highlights include a look at Sedona’s annual Spring Open Studios Tour (page 74), the lowdown on Yoga in the Outfield (page 57), berry-filled cocktails (page 104) and the new prix fixe brunch that has everyone on island time at Tommy Bahama (page 105).

Happy spring cleaning to all who celebrate!

All my best, Gabby Leighton

LET’S CHAT ABOUT THE REAL COST OF AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE

ENGINEERS ARE BATTLING to stave off earth’s looming climate crisis with electric vehicles, but there’s much more to electric cars than saving on fuel. Sure, you don’t have to spend money on gas; you can drive in the HOV lane to sneak by all other single-passenger drivers; you can put it on autopilot and check your emails, or FaceTime Grandma to ask for her brownie recipe — but let’s not forget the real carbon footprint the manufacturing of electric cars leave on the world. These facts may come as a surprise to you but knowing them will free you from the trappings of marketing and cost-cutting grandeur.

To start, let’s chat about the 6- to 13-year-olds and their parents mining for cobalt and lithium in the People’s Republic of Congo, where 60% of these precious metals come from, without even basic protective equipment. The destruction of their local ecosystems caused by the release of wastewater and other unusable ores, into environments they’re forced to live in due to miniscule wages, should make us consider our moral obligations. Amnesty International has documented children and adults mining cobalt in small tunnels, exposed to dangerous gases.

Now let’s focus on the electric battery found in these sleek, modern cars. Did you know that one metric ton of lithium requires around 500,000 gallons Mazvo

of water to mine? That’s a lot of water, yet we’re concerned about overwatering grass? This electric car battery will lose roughly 10% of its charging power within 3 years, and roughly 3-5% each year after that. By year 5, your electric battery will be at around 75% charging capacity. Furthermore, let’s recognize that the electric car is basically is considered “that old thing” within the first year as so much rapid technology change happens. Who is going pay top dollar for “that old thing” at only 3 years old? The newer, better models will be manufactured faster than the 240-mile distance you can drive before you must charge it again.

Speaking of charging: the average cost per kWh is between $0.40 and $0.70 cents, and you get 3-4 miles for every kWh. The average electric vehicle could require around $30 to be fully-charged. The slowest equipment provides charging through a common residential 120-volt AC outlet. These chargers can take 40-50 hours to charge an electric vehicle, and about 20-60 minutes at a “fast-charge” station.

To break it down, it costs about 17 cents to drive one mile in an average gas-powered vehicle, versus roughly 5 cents to drive one mile in an electric vehicle. If we compare the electric to the gas-powered vehicle, the gas powered

vehicle will essentially cost the owner $29.00 more than the electric vehicle to drive the same 240-mile distance. Where does that $29.00 savings fit in the bigger picture? What is the true cost of value we believe we’re getting?

Let’s chat about purchase prices. In 2022, the average price of an electric vehicle was $61,488, compared with $49,507 for all passenger cars and trucks, according to Kelley Blue Book. That’s roughly $12,000 more upfront cost for an electric vehicle versus gas. Oh, what to do with that extra $12,000? Perhaps start a Starbucks fund?

In the end, we can agree that there’s nothing wrong with an electric vehicle, and no one is speaking negatively about the theories and valuable outcomes of owning and driving them. What we should all recognize is that we cannot make blanket statements like, “I bought and drive an electric vehicle because I’m saving the money and the planet.” These fluffy, feel-good beliefs just aren’t 100% true.

The unspoken emotions that consumers have when purchasing an electric car is a sense of false relevance. The core of the purchase is based on the promise of saving money and the environment, not to mention how proud we are to own that vehicle. Unfortunately, the true value is only recognized when we trade it in to continue the cycle.

BEAUTY TALK

Entrepreneur and influencer Alena Monson on founding her cosmetics and nail brand

When Alena Monson, CEO and founder of Whats Up Beauty, immigrated to the U.S. 10 years ago, her life looked a bit different than it does now.

Monson, who has always had a talent for math and analytics, began her career as a programmer in her home country of Belarus.

She even met her future husband when the two of them collaborated on the same project from opposite sides of the world.

“He was from Arizona, and when I moved here, I wasn’t as prepared as I thought for living in an English-speaking country. Americans talk very fast,” Monson says. “I spent a lot of time on

So Scottsdale! April ‘23 35

social media, which helped me improve, but my analytical brain wouldn’t let me sit still.”

While following English-speaking influencers online, Monson saw many of them successfully launch their own brands and began to wonder what she would do if she was in their shoes. “I’ve always loved makeup and nails and enjoyed high-end products, but I never thought I could make those things a career. I also adored the influencer world. It was exciting to think that one day I could be the creator of a beauty trend.”

Monson started by building an Instagram account from the ground up, making nail art tutorials while teaching herself lighting, videography and editing. As people gravitated to her content, she became even more excited to see how else she could apply her analytical skills to the creative world.

When Monson noticed she was struggling to find the right nail tools in stores, she decided to start a company that met her own high standards for quality and clean ingredients. Whats Up Beauty, which began in her spare room almost nine years ago, has since expanded to a retail location in Chandler Fashion Center, Whats Up Nails; a team of nearly 20 employees around the world; and a thriving online store (www.whatsupbeauty.com).

Monson’s audience of over a quarter of a million Instagram followers (@alena.monson) eagerly awaits new product launches, from eyeshadow palettes with matching nail polishes to a wide array of tools for nail art and nail care.

“I’m driven to create clean, high-quality, and wearable products designed to impress and keep customers wondering what’s coming next,” she says. “I spend so much time with my products during development, and what I’ve learned is to trust my instincts.”

A Whole New World

Over the years, Monson has seen her business flourish alongside her confidence. As proof that through hard work, she can accomplish anything she sets her mind to, Monson gradually tackled one of her biggest obstacles – mastering English.

“I used to prefer written communication and having time to use translators and spelling and grammar checkers. With time and practice, my confidence grew along with my conversational English. And Americans are so good with accents that I could probably say most of my anxiety over my language was in my head!”

But when it came to immigrating to the U.S., language differences were only the beginning. “This may seem like an odd benefit, but it’s definitely easier to do business here compared to Eastern Europe,” she says. “People are friendlier, happier to help, and the smiling is contagious – I love it! Even the weather here suits me. A cold, cloudy day depresses me, and you can’t imagine how many of those I had growing up near the Baltic.”

Monson, who was initially nervous to step away from an established career as a software engineer, found that her programming background immediately came in handy. “I was shocked at how well it applied to working with manufacturers and made each project easier for me to understand. I constantly find

myself applying analytics while developing formulas and working with colors.”

This year, Monson looks forward to launching new moisturizing skin care products that combat the dry desert heat, as well as grab-and-go items that make perfect additions to anyone’s purse. Most of all, she’s thankful to have found a home – and a family –in Arizona, and in the beauty industry as a whole.

“I have zero regrets in my career shift – the beauty industry is full of wonderfully strong and talented people who impress me every day. The industry is very inspiring as many founders are very open and utilize social media to discuss both successes and hardships with their brand.”

To other hopeful entrepreneurs, Monson stresses the importance of constantly pushing the boundaries. “Do not believe for a second that anyone will ever look out for your business as much as you will,” she says. “Ultimately, the consequences of whatever happens are yours, so pay attention to details, double check paperwork, write things down, and be sure of your decisions. Don’t beat yourself up when you make a mistake. They will happen, but your diligence will help protect what you’re trying to create.”

And to her younger self, Monson has this to say: “Remember when you were turned down twice for a free ride at the prestigious school in the center of the city because you missed one test question by half a point? That turned out to not be that big of a deal. You will have more rejections in your life, but you have to keep going and do the best you can. Someone will eventually take a chance on you.”

VALUING VETERANS

Julio Enrique Alvarado supports Arizona’s veterans through housing and mental health programs

As a retired entrepreneur, lifelong volunteer with a wide range of nonprofits, and U.S. Airforce veteran, Julio Enrique Alvarado has lived much of his life devoted to service.

After moving from California to Scottsdale in 2009, Alvarado began noticing how many factors negatively influenced the lives of veterans. “A partial list includes long wait times to be seen by a doctor at the veterans’ hospital in Phoenix, an increasing number of veterans experiencing homelessness, and, most seriously, the increasing number of veteran suicides in the state,” Alvarado says. “In essence, veterans were dying from lack of care and trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder.”

Alvarado, who served in the Airforce during the Cuban missile crisis and the Vietnam War, spent several months doing field interviews with recovery clinics and sober living homes before deciding to launch a nonprofit of his own. Awakening Wholeness (www. awakeningwholeness.org) puts the focus on individual care, with educational programs that focus on physical and mental health, re-entry skills, and anger and anxiety management, all of which emphasize the body’s natural healing abilities.

And to provide transitional housing for veterans experiencing homelessness, Alvarado founded Bobby D Veterans Gateway (www.veteransgateway.org). The team hopes to open a diversified thrift store with sales directly improving the quality of life of local veterans, in addition to providing employment opportunities.

In recent years, he says, the Department of Veterans Affairs has made some significant changes in order to address veterans’ needs more directly. “However, the need is greater than the resources. There is room for third-party contractors who can provide services outside of the VA. With every veteran who transitions to a safe environment with continued care and the opportunity for gainful employment, our communities, states, and country benefit significantly.”

For Alvarado, answering the call of veterans in need is all in a day’s work. “The young men and women who have taken the oath and served our country, risking their lives – with some losing their lives –deserve to be supported for all their needs – medically, mentally, spiritually, and economically. It’s our commitment to our fellow Arizonans who answered our nation’s call and now live as our neighbors.”

SAVORING SUSTAINABILITY

As the head of Atlasta, one of the Valley’s premiere catering companies, Kristine Short is committed to excellence.

Since stepping into her role as CEO in 2022, Short has been proud to help grow the company that sparked her passion for the event and hospitality industry almost 30 years ago.

“Our menus stem from our dedication to an overarching food philosophy that puts food at the forefront and allows for the showcasing of intrinsic flavors,” says Short, who first joined Altasta shortly after she graduated from Arizona State University. “Every ingredient, every dish, every menu matters and is thoughtfully sourced, carefully composed and expertly executed by a highly-trained, full-time local culinary team.”

One of Short’s main driving forces is Altasta’s focus on sustainability, from local sourcing and waste elimination to pre-cycling and recycling. Its facilities operate through a zero-landfill system, which the team brings to each event to ensure waste is always at an absolute minimum.

“There’s an enormous amount of waste produced in the hospitality sector and the first step in changing that is acknowledging the issue,” Short says. “Sustainability is an ongoing purpose where small decisions progress into impactful differences. Over the last 13 years, Altasta has donated over 600,000 meals to those with food insecurity, has supported three local farms by supplying food for their not-for-slaughter animals, and has diverted over one million pounds of food away from landfills.”

For Short, this is just one source of pride among many. Another has been the creation of a purposeful and fulfilling environment for employees, employers, and guests alike. Short and her husband, Altasta’s award-winning chef Steve Short, know better than anyone the power of good food and good company.

“Conversations over the dinner table, laughing while cooking, deciding where to eat – these daily things remind me of the importance food plays in fostering not just connection and community, but memories,” she says. “My favorite conversations with my husband and my young adult children happen over dinner. It isn’t lost on me that I get to provide this opportunity for other people. I never take it for granted.”

SLEEK & SPORTY

Though he loves a tailored suit, Sidney Ocansey is most comfortable in athleisurewear.

As personal trainer who specializes in in-home and virtual training, Ocansey helps busy people create a more active lifestyle.

“My personal style is very relaxed, from my personality to my outfits,” he says.

By mixing comfort with style, Ocansey’s clothing revolves around athleisure, streetwear, and minimalist styles.

“My signature look is a black shirt and bottom with accents of color coming from my shoes or headwear,” he says. “Consistent with my love of black, my most prized possession is my black Big Bang Ceramic Hublot watch.”

When he does incorporate color, Ocansey’s preference is navy blue with white and gray combinations as well as olive green with white or black.

Since Ocansey has a tall, athletic build, he draws style inspiration from athletes with similar body types like Paul George, Devin Booker, and Kelly Oubre Jr.

“I’ve learned more of a relaxed style from Booker, nice casual attire from George, and a plethora of cuffed jean styles from Oubre,” he says.

What are your favorite brands? My favorite brands are Lululemon, Nike, Zara, and H&M. When it comes to shirts, I’ve had the most success with these companies in terms of finding a snug fit in the arms with a relaxed torso area or larger fits that aren’t too boxy and fit well around my shoulders while giving a looser arm fit.

What is your must-have item? My cologne is a must. For years now, I’ve been using Creed Aventus and Armaf Club De Nuit. I am a firm believer that physical (stature) and emotional confidence as well as a great scent bring more attraction than the attire itself.

What is your best style advice? I believe a great fit comes more from the confidence you gain within your own style, rather than the brand you are wearing, or external validation. You never know who you’re inspiring by being yourself.

RADIATING CONFIDENCE

Megan Tenorio’s style reflects her transformation journey

Megan Tenorio knows that fashion has a powerful way of boosting one’s self confidence. After losing over 80 pounds, she enjoys inspiring others to go out into the world, with their head held high, and find their own strength through their style.

Sporting a comfortable, confident style, Tenorio is the first person patients see at Berardi Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery.

“Working in the plastic surgery industry, it is important for me to look the best I can,” she says. “Professionalism is a priority.”

After work, Tenorio can typically be found in gym clothes, jeans with a good heel, or an alluring dress. “I worked hard to get to where I am physically and mentally. I found confidence in who I am inside and out, and I am not afraid to show it,” she says.

Always one to evolve in her fashion sense, Tenorio puts a sophisticated edge behind her personal style and is influenced by Rihanna's looks.

“She is the perfect combination of sexy, comfortable and daring,” Tenorio says. “I also love using social media for inspiration, it’s a great outlet for finding hot trends and new shops,”

What are your favorite brands? I love trendy brands like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Fashion Nova, White Fox, and PrettyLittleThing. They never disappoint and I can always find something I love.

How has your style evolved over the years? My style has done a 180. I love finding new clothes that match my confidence and that includes incorporating pops of color. You can always see me showing color in my shoes!

What is your must-have item when it comes to fashion? I always have a cute bag and jewelry to spice up my outfits. I’m not complete without it. Also, I love being in a mini dress, but I love my gym leggings. Fitness is my passion.

Springtime signals a time to start anew, and that may just include updating your ensembles while supporting local businesses at the same time. In honor of those who create, we’re spotlighting local designers on a mission to challenge the status quo through their wearable art. From women’s and men’s garments to hats and jewelry, get to know the visionaries behind five Valley brands.

50 So Scottsdale! April ‘23

Ellie White Mill & Habs

Tell us about Mill & Habs.

At Mill & Habs, we believe that every hat tells a story. We offer a wide variety of ready-to-wear and custom-order hats made from the best quality materials, while also prioritizing sustainability. By handmaking every hat from start to finish and offering a variety of custom options, our clients can be a part of the design process while we work together to create a hat that truly represents who they are, where they have been and who they aspire to be.

Describe your brand in three words. Luxurious, handmade, originality.

What is the inspiration behind it?

My childhood. From an early age I have had a fascination with luxury and fashion. If I wanted something, I had to make it myself. My mindset is directly tied to that little girl inside me that grew up with less, but knew that someday she could have more with the right attitude, drive and passion.

How did you get into design?

I have always had a passion and admiration for all things art since I can remember. It wasn’t until my mid-twenties, when I co-founded a custom jacket company while living in Nashville, Tennessee, that I realized my true calling was in fashion. After moving to Scottsdale in 2021, I attempted to continue making custom jackets but making jackets in 109-degree weather was less than inspiring so I went back to the drawing board. Living in the desert, I quickly realized the importance of shading your face.

What designers do you look up to the most?

Virgil Abloh and Donatella Versace.

What has been your greatest achievement?

My greatest achievement to date is giving myself the grace, patience and freedom to rediscover who I am and who I want to become throughout this journey and, as a result, becoming a version of myself that I can truly be proud of.

What about your greatest challenge?

My greatest challenge for this chapter of owning my own business would be learning how to wear many hats within Mill & Habs –pun not intended.

What advice would you give to an aspiring designer?

Start even if you don’t feel ready. It is so easy to get fixed on the destination and kicking yourself for not being where you want to be in comparison to others, but the journey to the destination is just as important in figuring out your brand imaging and direction.

mila + stevie

Tell us about mila + stevie. Mila + stevie is a woman-led, family-run jewelry and accessories business based in Scottsdale. Our designs mix metals and natural gemstones to create a look that adds glamour with edge to every ensemble.

Describe your brand in three words. Glamour with edge.

What is the inspiration behind it?

Started in Florida and now based in Scottsdale, the brand is inspired by the timeless sophistication of the East Coast and the adventurous spirit of the West as illustrated through our use of natural gemstones. Named after our fluffly golden retrievers, mila + stevie is a proud supporter of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

How did you get into design?

I have always been a person who expressed herself creatively. Growing up as an only child with parents who both worked outside the house, I spent a lot of time playing by myself. I was constantly doing arts and crafts or making up stories for all my dolls. In elementary school, I started singing in the school choir. In college, I studied creative writing and music. After college, I performed in operas, musical theater, and my church choir. In fact, I still sing in my church choir today! Designing and making jewelry has been a natural extension of my creative life.

What designers do you look up to the most?

Rebecca Minkoff, Christian Siriano, Michael Costello, Rachel Zoe, Patricia Field, and Maeve Reilly.

What has been your greatest achievement?

Having the business thrive during COVID.

What about your greatest challenge?

Navigating the global supply chain to ensure I have the right amount of inventory at the right time. I’ve been able to ease this challenge by maintaining good relationships with my suppliers and manufactures.

What advice would you give to an aspiring designer?

Listen to your gut! You have to follow your own instincts. Your designs won’t be for everyone and that’s okay. If you try to sell to everyone, then you sell to no one.

Yuval Yakoby

Tell us about AZVA.

AZVA is a streetwear brand based out of Arizona, allowing individuals to express themselves in a unique way through fashion. We strive to provide high-quality everyday garments made to last. The brand has been formed on our ability to be innovative and create clothing that stands out.

Describe your brand in three words. Innovative, unique, stylish.

What is the inspiration behind it?

The inspiration behind AZVA was allowing myself to turn something I loved doing and had a vision for into a reality. I always had an entrepreneurial spirit and AZVA was a creative outlet, while learning and improving my business skill set that I developed at a young age.

How did you get into design?

I got into design by having the desire to create something that I personally wanted to wear and putting my own creative twist to it. I am the type of person where when I have a vision to create something, I act on it and learn as I go.

What designer do you look up to the most?

The designer I look up to the most is Ronnie Fieg from Kith. His ability to create high-quality garments and tell a story through what he designs is remarkable.

What has been your greatest achievement?

My greatest achievement to date is landing a deal with a local professional sports team to be in their team shop at the arena next year.

What about your greatest challenge?

My greatest challenge was going full time with my company and navigating through decisions that came with growth and expansion.

What advice would you give to an aspiring designer?

I would advise an aspiring designer to create garments that they want to create, not what they think will sell. If you love what you do and put that love and passion into what you’re designing, people will notice. I also would stress the importance of good marketing and customer support, because those are the fundamentals of establishing and maintaining a solid customer base.

Lifetime Leather Co.

Tell us about Lifetime Leather Co.

Lifetime Leather Co. is my family-owned business started in 2011. We handcraft authentic American high-quality leather products, guaranteed for life. I wanted to create high-quality products that last a lifetime. So from humble beginnings, the Lifetime Leather dream began

Describe your brand in three words. Authentic American goods.

What is the inspiration behind it?

My family and friends are key in everything with Lifetime Leather. What started as a simple desire to give meaningful gifts, then grew and became an urgency to show my children that you can make a difference in an increasingly disposable world.

How did you get into design?

After a tragic zip-lining accident, I was left unable to walk for three years. To pass time and stay positive, I read motivational and instructional books, leather crafting included. I was trying to figure out how to make my difference in the world and coincidentally enough, get quality and memorable Christmas gifts for my family. Unfortunately, I was broke and options seemed limited at the time, so on the drive home later that day, I spotted a discarded leather couch on the side of the road and in that moment, I had an epiphany! I salvaged the leather from the couch and made wallets, toiletry bags, purses, and passport cases – everyone loved their gifts and something finally clicked that this was the path I needed to follow.

What designer do you look up to the most?

I wouldn’t say there is a specific designer that I look up to per say. I genuinely just create everything myself and gather inspiration and creativity from the people and things I surround myself with.

What has been your greatest achievement?

Witnessing my personal and business’ growth and proudly receiving White House recognition as an all American made luxury leather company.

What about your greatest challenge?

The greatest challenge I, and no doubt others, face is the shifts in the market as well as the competition in prices from China. Even through COVID, my mission is high-end products that last a lifetime.

What advice would you give to an aspiring designer?

Start where you are. The timing will never be perfect.

Tell us about Jayebird Golf. Jayebird Golf is a women’s golf apparel brand that was born out of a love for style, need for function and desire to inspire more women to get into the game of golf. Each collection is designed to mix and match tops and bottoms so that our customer can create multiple looks with less.

Describe your brand in three words. Versatile, quality, timeless.

What is the inspiration behind it?

I find a lot of inspiration in retro sportswear and classic non golf pieces that get a lot of wear in my own closet. We put a lot of emphasis on timeless design that can be worn for years to come. Beyond the look of the product, golf functionality is a guiding principal in everything we design. I act as my own fit model and play golf in every sample we create before we ever move forward with production.

How did you get into design?

I’ve always dreamt of working in design but was never formally trained in it. It wasn’t until I moved to Hong Kong in 2017 for my husband’s job that I decided to pursue design and create my own line of women’s golf apparel. I had to learn on the fly and find people willing to teach me all that goes in to designing a line, sourcing materials and actually making the product.

What designers do you look up to the most?

I’m very inspired by luxury designers like Phoebe Philo of Celine, Elin King of Toteme and Amy Smilovic of Tibi that create functional, timeless designs with special attention to craftsmanship. I also admire classic brands like J.Crew and Ralph Lauren whose designs look just as relevant today as they did 30 years ago.

What has been your greatest achievement?

This year we were recognized as a favorite women’s golf apparel brand by Golf Channel and Golf Digest which was a pinch-me moment.

What about your greatest challenge?

I’ve learned a lot of things the hard way which is never easy! When you’re running your own business you wear a lot of hats. Learning to focus on the things that are going to grow the brand and not get distracted by the rest is a daily challenge for me.

What advice would you give to an aspiring designer?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions and don’t try to do it all! Focus on what makes you different and try to do that to the best of your ability and stick with it.

GATEWAY FOR CANCER RESEARCH

Delivering hope today, discovering the treatments of tomorrow

One might argue that the greatest risk of never trying, is never finding out. That’s how Gateway for Cancer Research sees it.

Cancer research carries risk, but the reward of discovering life-changing treatments and therapies makes it a journey worth taking. And because research is cumulative, even those studies that don’t pan out as expected yield invaluable information that shapes future research.

Bioscience and laboratory studies eventually require evaluation in humans. However, funding for this vital step is scarce. Phase I and Phase II clinical trials, which often mark the first-in-human study of novel cancer-fighting drugs, devices, and therapies, can be among the most challenging for which to secure funding based onto risk versus reward ratios.

Gateway, a private nonprofit organization distinguished for exclusively funding early phase clinical trials for all types of cancer, has spent more than 30 years advancing some of the world’s most innovative, aspirational clinical trials. While other funding organizations choose to invest in studies considered a “sure thing,” Gateway intentionally goes where others won’t. Taking calculated risks backed by scientific evidence, Gateway partners with some of the world’s most brilliant physicians, generous donors and bravest patients to deliver hope and healing today, while laying the foundation for the treatments of tomorrow.

For a cancer patient whose dreams of a cure are shattered when all available treatments fall short or fail altogether, clinical trials provide what they need most – HOPE. Just ask 80-year-old Doug Hull, who was diagnosed in early 2021 with stage 4 pancreatic cancer that

had spread to his lungs. Hull lost hope when a toxic reaction to chemotherapy almost killed him. Then, he found a Gateway-funded trial led by Sameek Roychowdhury, MD, an oncologist at Ohio State University and chair of Gateway’s Research and Grants Peer Review Committee.

Through a telemedicine blood monitoring trial and remote medication oversight by Dr. Roychowdhury, Hull is now two years past a devastating diagnosis. Filled with renewed hope and thriving, he says, “Hope is a magical thing.”

Hull and his fellow trial participants provided the clinical data necessary for the manufacturer of the investigational drug to fund an upcoming trial. Launching later this year, it will expand

the research initiated by Gateway to a larger group of 200 patients from across the country.

Since its inception in 1991, Gateway has invested nearly $100 million to advance over 200 clinical trials that have impacted nearly 10,000 men, women, and children around the world. None of this, however, would be possible without those who willingly invest in the future of cancer care. Through generous underwriting, 100% of all donations to Gateway directly fund cancer research.

The Ageless Agency™

Q&A with Dr. Drobot, the Valley’s longevity expert

On the forefront of longevity science, Dr. Jeoff Drobot isn’t against aging- he just wants us all to do it better.

The Owner of Drobot Longevity and The Biomed Centers in Scottsdale, AZ and Providence, RI knows the common misconception is that getting old automatically comes with health problems, but he says that it doesn’t have to. As a longevity doctor, Drobot is constantly learning and pushing the biology and physiology of his patients with the goal of lengthening their lifespan while simultaneously improving their healthspan.

Dr. Drobot studied Exercise Physiology in Calgary, Alberta, Canada followed by obtaining his medical degree in Portland, Oregon. With over 20 years of longevity medicine and biohacking under his belt, he offers a full range of innovate IV therapies, unique brain treatments for optimization of cognitive function and repair from concussions, stem cell and exosome treatment as well as a plethora of innovative assessments to map out an individual treatment plan that results in a lasting transformation. “We are experts in this field and have the latest technology and most advanced assessments and knowledge,” he says. “We have the advantage of being the first to market on a lot of technologies including Brain Frequency™ technology.”

Dr. Drobot practices what he preaches and spends time each day in his 7,000 square foot clinic doing therapies on himself. “I love watching people, myself included, improve and regain health and performance,” he says. Although many of his A-list celebrity and professional athlete patients fly in from around the world to spend time at the Biomed Center Scottsdale, Valley residents have the advantage of visiting the clinic located just off the 101 and Raintree in north Scottsdale. “Whether you have a specific concern in mind or just know you want to feel better, our personalized technology can get you feeling the best you’ve ever felt!” Dr. Drobot reveals.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR TREATMENTS AT THE BIOMED CENTER?

EBO2 Blood Filtering and Oxygenation: This treatment is the pinnacle of blood oxygentation and cleansing. It invigorates the body's cells and helps the immune system reset from chronic viral infections.

Brain Frequency™: We're one of the few centers to offer this major advancement in cognitive renewal and concussion support. Treating and optimizing cognitive function is one of Dr. Drobot's specialties and people travel globally to have his guidance.

Stem Cell and Exosome Therapy:

Although our Chronological Age is determined by the number of birthday's we've had, our cells have a Biological Age which responds wonderfully to therapies that introduce healing and growth factors to decrease our body's Biological Age.

WHAT IS THE FOXYDETOX?

We have just launched FoxyDetox, the Clever Cleansing Boutique at the Biomed. With four synergistic and innovative therapies, we can knock the dust off an overworked liver and detoxification organs in two hours of treatments. These therapies promote increased energy and accelerate any weight loss program. For those that 'play hard' and need the 'oil changed' periodically.

WHAT ASSESSMENTS WILL YOU DO TO ESTABLISH A GOOD BASELINE?

Obviously, treatments without direction is ineffective. Dr. Drobot has both in house diagnostics and external testing to assess your body's physiology and longevity potential. His Age Accounting assessment can be performed at home and is the most comprehensive longevity assessment available to assess what is compromising and aiding in your overall longevity.

Morning Squeeze

Locally owned Morning Squeeze has been serving up groovy breakfast and lunch in Arizona since 2013. Its 1970s and 1980s vibe creates a retro backdrop for its menu of classic diner dishes and modern brunch favorites. This is a go-to spot for those looking for great grub before cruising Old Town Scottsdale. Trevor’s Liquor

The newly opened Trevor’s Liquor in North Scottsdale – which still also has its original location in South Scottsdale – is revolutionizing liquor store shopping as a marketplace dedicated to the highest quality products with entertainment including golf simulators, community events, a cigar room, delicious food, and – of course – those gorgeous outdoor patios. This isn’t your grandpa’s liquor store! Trevor’s is a chic and engaging local hangout designed with the ultimate beverage experience in mind. www.trevors.com.

Mavrix

Located just outside Salt River Fields are Mavrix and Octane, local favorites for first-class family entertainment (think bowling and an arcade!). Connecting the two entertainment venues is an expansive outdoor patio where friends and families can travel between the two locations while immersing themselves in games of giant Connect Four and Jenga. The patio scores extra points for its top-notch menu of burgers, pizzas, salads, and more. Featuring a shipping container with a full bar and an LED jumbotron, the patio is climate controlled with shade sails and a misting system, making it the perfect place to wind down or game up during the warmer months. www.mavrix.com.

Child Crisis Arizona’s Blue Hawaii Gala will honor organization’s milestone 45th anniversary

Both Bing Crosby and Elvis Presley crooned that “dreams come true…in Blue Hawaii” in their respective chart-topping covers of the iconic tune.

This month, Child Crisis Arizona intends to do the same – make dreams come true –during its Blue Hawaiian-themed gala.

“This event will celebrate our 45th anniversary as well as help us to raise critical funds to provide youth across Arizona a safe environment, free from abuse and neglect, by creating strong and successful families,” says Torrie Taj, CEO of Child Crisis Arizona. “To give perspective, over the past few years alone we have grown to serve more than 9,000 unduplicated individuals annually.”

The island-inspired theme is by design and in homage to several longtime partners’ and supporters’ most beloved galas of the past. As such, those who attend are encouraged to wear tropical attire, especially in hues of blue.

“No matter how you come dressed, everyone who joins us will enjoy a sumptuous dinner and formal program, during which I will be joined by one of our clients to share their family’s story, but we are also planning to turn the concept of a traditional gala on its head with a series of special activations throughout the evening as well,” Taj says.

Among the activations is a “pool bar pull,” which is a twist on a blind wine pull and includes the chance for donors to win high-end bourbons, tequilas, island rums, and other specialty spirits. There will also be a shaved ice bar, casino games for prizes, and a series of fundraising games, notably one where guests will attempt to win clamshells that contain various gift cards from retailers and restaurants.

Also expect a silent auction, dancing, a paddle raiser, and live music from Notes from Neptune, an acoustic jam band bestknown for re-imagining popular songs.

“In addition to all of the fun, we are also excited to share an update with our

guests on our new 38,000-square-foot campus, which broke ground in March and is expected to be completed next year,” Taj says. “Spanning 2.4 acres, the two-story complex – complete with an urban garden, sensory and play therapy rooms, volunteer center, and medical screen space – will be among the first net-zero construction projects in Arizona, meaning it will generate as much energy as it consumes.”

In addition to its sustainable elements and bringing all of Child Crisis Arizona’s services, programs, and team under one roof, according to Taj, the new campus will also bring several strategic collaborations with such organizations as Ballet Arizona, United Food Bank, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona to help better serve and inspire youth statewide for generations to come.

Neuropathy or Poor Circulation?

Wouldn’t it be great to say ‘later alligator’ to those nagging pains we think we have to get used to just because we’re getting older? “It’s not normal to have difficulty walking to your mailbox, it’s not normal to have constant leg pain or cramping,” says Dr. Joel Rainwater, chief medical officer of Comprehensive Integrated Care (CiC). “That’s not normal aging. It could be PAD.”

Poor circulation or PAD (peripheral artery disease) is caused by the buildup of fatty material inside the arteries which limits blood flow. “Blood carries oxygen and nutrients that your legs and feet need to stay healthy,” says Dr. Kerry Zang, of CIC Foot & Ankle. “If you have poor circulation, your body will tell you. Your feet may feel numb or at night you might have to dangle your legs over the side of the bed to relieve a cramp in your foot.”

PAD is often confused with neuropathy, as the symptoms are so similar. Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that involves damage to the nerves in your feet In many cases, it’s caused by diabetes, but poor circulation can play a role and make the symptoms feel worse.

The good news is specialists like Dr. Rainwater are able to treat PAD with a minimally invasive procedure. Using advanced imaging they are able to go into the bloodstream through a tiny nick in the skin. “We’re able to see if there is a blockage and then remove it with special instruments,” explains Rainwater. “Once the plaque is removed, blood flow improves.” Patients are home within hours and back to everyday activities with almost no downtime. Most insurance plans, including Medicare cover the treatment.

If you are suffering from neuropathy or poor circulation, make an appointment to see a doctor. Or, if you’re not finding relief from medication or treatment, a second opinion may be helpful to determine the cause of the pain, cramping, or numbness in your feet.

Contact our office today to set up a consultation with one of our providers. (480) 860-6455 ciccenters.com You may have Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)—a life threatening condition. However, if caught in time, PAD can be treated without the need for invasive surgery or general anesthesia. IF YOU... Have difficulty walking without taking a break due to leg pain. Sedona Spring Open Studios Tour presents a wide range of artistic mediums

Renowned as a spiritual and artistic haven, Sedona will host the 20th annual Spring Open Studios Tour from April 28 to 30. Fortyeight professional artists will open their art studios to the public, providing a birds-eye view of the creative process and a potpourri of art for sale. Art mediums awaiting visitors include photography, metalworks, jewelry, pottery, multimedia, glass, acrylic and oil paintings, and weaving.

Metal sculpture artist and tour veteran Lon Walters will showcase his unique metal sculptures. His whimsical art includes blimps, Champagne carriages, and a Bailey’s bus. “I love explaining my process to visitors,” he says. “People are always enthusiastic and sometimes give me ideas for future projects.”

The mission of the Sedona Visual Artists Coalition (SVAC), which sponsors the tour and includes a wide range of artists from Sedona and the entire Verde Valley, is to create a supportive visual arts community that provides both exploration and social opportunities.

The synergy between the SVAC co-chairs, Mike Upp, who handles the marketing, and Julie Talbot, who heads up logistics, is the force that drives the tour.

“We have worked tirelessly for the tour for 10 years,” Upp says. “I put 150 to 200 hours a year into marketing and running the tour.”

As co-chair, Upp procures grants, creates a stylish brochure, handles the media and advertising, and meets with the press and Chamber of Commerce. “Even though it’s very time consuming for the six months leading up to the tour, it’s a labor of love for me,” he says.

Upp’s artistic bent manifested in high school, where he became enamored with ceramics. He got further steeped in the craft in college, becoming a self-described “starving artist” for 10 years after graduation. To garner a heftier income, he turned to the business world, which included running the Tempe Arts Festival for three years.

“I learned a ton about marketing, and I was able to leverage those skills into various high-tech consulting jobs,” says Upp, noting his career took him to Portland and eventually back to Arizona in 2012. “The very weekend my wife and I moved back, we encountered the studio art tour in Sedona. Six months later, I offered to do the marketing, and everyone said, ‘why not just run it’? And so, I did!”

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day and is free to attend. Visitors can find the participating artists and the locations of their studios online.

CANCERS LINKED TO HPV

The human body is under constant attack from a number of different viruses. Some versions are harmless, causing barely a sniffle or no symptoms at all before they’re dispatched by the immune system. Other virus variants may cause severe illness or disease, such as those that cause COVID19 or the flu.

The human papillomavirus (HPV), for instance, is a leading cause of several cancers and is quite common—infecting eight out of 10 people during their lives. Most HPV infections don’t lead to cancer, but many people don’t understand the potential cancer risk factors caused by an infection, including an increased risk for developing head and neck cancers. In fact, a 2019 survey published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics found that 70 percent of American adults don’t know about the connection between HPV and cancer.

More than 46,000 new cancer cases each year are detected in parts of the body where HPV is commonly found, and the virus is responsible for 36,000 of these diagnoses, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC also estimates 14,400, or 40 percent, of these HPVcauses cancer diagnoses, are oropharyngeal—a type of head and neck cancer.

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States, according to the CDC. HPV may be passed through skin-to-skin contact, predominately during vaginal, anal or oral sex.

HPV is a group of viruses with about 200 different variants and subvariants. Most HPV types don’t cause cancer. Some may cause warts on the surface of the skin, while others may cause them to form on the mouth, throat, vagina and anus.

HPV types are categorized in two ways:

Low-risk HPV types are generally those that may cause warts.

High-risk HPV varieties may be more likely to cause cancer.

The two main types of HPV strains associated with cancer are HPV 16 and 18, according to a 2019 review in the British Journal of Cancer.

In most cases, HPV viruses are killed by the immune system before we’re aware we had them. In some cases, the virus may persist, but it’s benign and causes no symptoms.

Aggressive strains of HPV, however, may cause changes to cell structures, turning normal cells into abnormal cells. When these altered cells lose their ability to regulate their growth or shut themselves down, they may reproduce unchecked and form tumors.

Ninety-one percent of all cervical cancers are caused by HPV, according to the CDC. In recent years, experts have linked high percentages of other cancers to HPVs, and those numbers are growing. Other HPV-associated cancers include those below.

HPV-RELATED CANCERS

antibodies that ward off HPV infections.

The vaccine is routinely offered to boys and girls at age 11 or 12, but it’s safe for children as young as age 9 and approved through age 45.

For children and teenagers 15 and younger, the CDC recommends two doses of the HPV vaccine six to 12 months apart.

For teenagers and adults ages 15-26, the CDC recommends three doses—the second dose one to two months after the first dose, and the third dose six months after the first dose.

Young adults and pregnant women should talk to their doctor about whether the vaccine is appropriate for them.

The most common side effects or reactions to HPV vaccines include:

Estimated number of new cancers diagnosed every year that are linked to HPV:

WHAT IS THE HPV VACCINE?

It’s almost inconceivable that we have a vaccine that can prevent high percentages of many cancers, and yet many Americans are either not aware of it or choose not to get the vaccine for themselves or their children.

In 2020, about 58 percent of American adolescents were fully vaccinated for HPV, according to the CDC. About 75 percent have received one dose.

The HPV vaccine is up to 99 percent effective at preventing HPV infections that cause cancer, according to American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. They’re also effective at preventing the types of HPV that may cause genital warts. The vaccines work by stimulating the immune system to produce

• Dizziness

• Nausea

• Headache

• Fever

• Pain, swelling and redness at the injection site

• Allergic reactions

The effectiveness and importance of the HPV vaccination in preventing cancer cannot be understated. Parents need to act to reduce risk to themselves and their children.

2023 CAYENNE TURBO GT

The need for speed – and luxury

VITAL STATS:

2023 Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT

Base Price: $190,150

With no less than 14 model variants of the Porsche Cayenne SUV, there’s a new range-topping Turbo GT that’s the most ultimate Porsche Cayenne and is the closest to a Cayenne GT3 as Porsche has ever built.

It’s the fastest, most powerful model, and –with a starting price of over $190,000 – it’s the most expensive sport utility vehicle made by the German sports car maker in history. Throw in a few obligatory and pricey options and the price quickly soars to over $200,000.

Other than price, there’s a few other important big numbers with this car, starting with the engine and 631 horsepower from the revised 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 with peak torque of 626 pound-feet of torque delivered consistently from 2,300 to 4,500 rpm, according to Porsche. All that power is delivered via a ZF-built eightspeed automatic transmission and through the standard four-wheel steering and all-wheel-drive system.

Gripping and ripping into the asphalt blasting from 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds (according to Porsche, but likely quicker), are specific

285/35ZR22 Pirelli PZero Corsa tires up front; in back, 315/30Z22s on gorgeous wheels. Highperformance baked carbon-ceramic brakes –eight piston calipers up front, four piston units in back – brings it to a halt and there’s a standard weight-saving carbon-fiber roof over drivers’ heads (a sunroof is not available). Porsche also claims a top speed of 186 mph. Again, it’s suspected that in reality the car is actually quicker. Inside, the Cayenne is every inch a luxoliner, with perfectly sculpted front seats and a tight rear seat. Not only is the cockpit classy, but it’s also virtually a blank canvas for customers to outfit it with personalized options, from seatbelt colors and surface materials to desirable upgrades like massaging seats and the 1,455-watt, 21 speaker Burmester audio system.

Any residual insanity of the cost of this car pretty much evaporates the moment drivers unleash the massive power as they slingshot out of a standing start – a dizzying exercise in sophisticated brutality. In that regard, the Turbo GT may very well be much more vehicle than many will want to handle.

Cass is even able to set up cooking competitions for its guests, pitting them against each other much like they would be on Food Network’s Chopped wherein they have to create dishes using secret ingredients.

Pricing is based on group size, accommodation needs, activities booked, and culinary requests, and quotes for all-inclusive bundled reservations are available. Those who wish to simply stay and sip at the winery and hotel, as well as those who wish to take part in Camp Cass with a group without staying overnight, are able to do so with advance reservations.

BONJOUR, CANADA!

Enjoy Old World charm and waterfront wonders in the modern metropolis of Montreal

Looking for a different kind of island escape? Consider Montreal. Canada’s second-largest city, Montreal is located where the St. Lawrence and Ottawa rivers meet and is bordered by water on all sides. And though in Canada, the city’s official first language is French as its modern roots are planted firmly planted in Europe. Originally colonized by the French in 1535, Montreal would remain under French rule for nearly 230 years until becoming a British colony and, eventually, one of the most picturesque cities in Canada in 1832.

Today, Montreal is a melting pot of Old World elegance, architecture, and hospitality as well as contemporary amenities, attractions and adventures.

A Cultural Mecca

The late spring and early summer are among the best times to visit the region, both to enjoy the warmer weather and to take part in the city’s many large-scale events. Chief among them is the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada, which takes places annually in June at the iconic Gilles-Villeneuve Circuit. With the Canadian segment of the Formula 1 World Championship, in addition to the race itself, there are three days of Ferrari, Porsche and Formula 1600 Challenges as well as celebrations, beach parties, concerts and themed events nearly 24 hours a day, both indoors and out.

The spring and summer also mark festival season in the area. From April to September, in fact, Montreal plays host to several dozen of such events, including La Ronde, a monthlong fireworks and pyrotechnics festival with 10 major visual showcases; Osheaga, a five-day music, arts and culinary festival; Just for Laughs, the world’s largest international comedy festival; Montreal Jazz Fest, among the largest jazz festivals in the world; and Montreal Complètement Cirque, a nearly two-week showcase of the greatest Cirque De Soleil-style performers from around the globe.

Beyond festival season, no matter when visiting, the cultural scene is always electric.

In 2006, Montreal was officially designated a UNESCO City of Design, joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as one of only 40 such cities in the world. This means that everything from its monuments and museums to its public spaces and skyline are done with intention. It also means that everything is so breathtakingly beautiful that it can be hard to decide on what to do. Some best bets: Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Pointe-àCallière, Montreal Archaeology and History Complex, Musée d’art

contemporain de Montreal, Ecomuseum Zoo, Montreal Science Centre, Morgan Arboretum, and The Biosphere. Insider tip: If visiting The Biosphere, be sure to check out its biodome, which has large-scale replicas of the four ecosystems found across North and South America. The Biosphere is home to the city’s dreamy botanical garden as well.

Alternatively, a great way to get a lot into limited time is by starting with a tour. And there are some truly epic tour groups in Montreal. For example, Helicraft offers helicopter tours that give a bird’s-eye view of the Olympic Stadium, downtown skyscrapers, Mount Royal, Saint Joseph's Oratory, the Old Port, Parc JeanDrapeau, Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, and the Jacques Cartier Bridge, with details and rich history on each along the way. AML Cruises trades the air for the water, providing sightseeing cruises along the St. Lawrence River, including tours at sunset and after dark. There are even double-decker bus tours available, courtesy of Coach Canada, that allow guests to hop off and on across the city for several hours.

Eat & Stay

Of course, another great way to get to know a city is by experiencing its epicurean scene. Montreal’s food is inspired by flavors from around the world, and it truly excels in fine dining offerings. There are two Forbes Four Star eateries in the area in in Toque!, a contemporary French restaurant, and Maison Boulud, a fusion of Canadian comfort food and French delicacies. In addition, several of the top spots in the annual Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants list have been given to Montreal eateries, including vegetable-forward Mon Lapin, Avant Garde Montreal Plaza, brasserie-style Monarque, Japanese-inspired Jun I, Japanese-Peruvian gem Nikkei, and Old World Italian-inspired Nora Gray.

Finally, and especially if visiting for the first time, secure a reservation at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel (“Fairmont Le Reine Élizabeth” in French). First built in the 1950s and recently given a $140 million update, the Queen Elizabeth features 950 rooms, and its three highest floors are solely reserved to provide the Fairmont Gold luxury experience. On these levels, expect a more personalized experience as well as a dedicated concierge, a private lobby with breakfast and happy hour, and a multiroom retreat set apart from other hotel guests. There are a total of 100 suites, many located on the Gold floors, and several are named after popular Montreal neighborhoods with decor to match. Its most impressive suite, however, is named after something else. In 1969, when John and Yoko Ono were denied access to the United States, they stayed in bed at the Queen Elizabeth for a full week. During that time, and from bed, they wrote and recorded Give Peace a Chance. Today, the 17th-floor suite, named to honor the couple, is a full homage to the historic event, complete with a virtual reality experience, memorabilia, and art installations. The Queen Elizabeth also boasts an experiential bar called Nacarat that has a wheel of tastes to help guests choose a cocktail, a gourmet foods shop, a sweet shop, Sunday brunch, high tea, a wellness center, and a full-service spa. Zinqué, a chic and modern neighborhood restaurant located in the luxury wing at Scottsdale Fashion Square, was designed to embody what co-owner Kristin Dossetti calls “French art de vivre,” the art of living well in all things. To Dossetti, this means architecturally, aesthetically and across the menu.

“Our cocktail program is art de vivre in every sense,” Dossetti says. “The attention to detail on everything from flavors to garnishes to drinkware is made with intention.”

This concept is best illustrated by one of Zinqué’s most popular signature cocktails, Unicorn Tears ($15).

It starts by layering a highball glass with ice, followed by St-Germain elderflower liquor, fresh lemon juice, and an Italian citrus-infused aperitivo called Italicus Rosolio di Bergamotto.

“These contents combine to create a pastel yellow color halfway up the glass,” Dossetti says. “Then comes the magic.”

According to Dossetti, when creating this liquid work of art, the team was inspired by a particular shade of midnight cobalt blue that mimics the distinctive water of the French Riviera.

“To attain that color atop the yellow, we gently add gin to the glass, either Aviation or Spring 44 as both have complementary floral and lightly sweet notes, and then finish it with organic, gluten-free butterfly pea flower powder,” Dossetti says.

As it infuses, the powder turns the top layer of the glass to that perfect shade of cobalt blue before slowly transforming before guests’ eyes into a vibrant, springy violet hue.

“We garnish it with a dried blood orange wheel for an added hint of citrus,” Dossetti says. “From the aromatics to the multicolored visual effects to the light, bright flavor profile, it is all things art de vivre.”

CHEF CONVERSATIONS

Yudith Bustos is the executive pastry chef of Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North, dreaming up imaginative desserts and making sweet memories at the resort’s Talavera Restaurant, Proof Canteen, Onyx Bar, and the Saguaro Blossom as well as for special events, in-room dining, and in-house groups.

Are you relatively new to the team?

Yes and no. I joined the Scottsdale team in late 2022, but I have been with the brand since 2011, including as a pastry chef with Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas, Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC; and Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo.

How have you started to make your mark on property?

I started by reopening our custom wedding cake and special event bakery on property. I have also re-imagined our in-room amenities, adding chocolate art pieces and other surprises. We also recently launched Talavera and Proof’s new desserts, adding spirit-infused offerings, desserts that smoke, sweets with 3D elements, and more. In April, we will unveil Onyx’s dessert menu, which will feature tapasstyle desserts and treats.

How did you get your start in pastry?

When I was 18 a friend opened a pastry shop and asked me to help with breads and cakes. I was immediately fascinated by how a few ingredients could be transformed into edible art and decided to go to culinary school.

What led you to the Four Seasons?

In 2011, I earned an internship under a French chef at a luxury resort, and when he moved to the Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica, he encouraged me to apply, which included creating a dessert tasting menu for the hiring and culinary team. The rest is history.

Tell us something surprising.

Growing up, my family had a farm in our small town of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. One of our crops was cocoa beans, but we sold them whole. I spent my entire childhood around hundreds of chocolate crops but never processed them until I moved to the states.

COASTAL CUISINE

Arboleda offers dishes inspired by oceanside eateries across the Mediterranean

There is also another glass window on the opposite side of the restaurant, giving guests the chance to see hung meats curing in real time.

Heading the kitchen is executive chef Evan Gotanda, who most recently served as chef de cuisine of Salt House. Gotanda brings more than 20 years of experience to the role, including time with Michelinstarred Patina Restaurant and Anchor & Hope. His current menu is a celebration of flavors from Spain, Italy, Greece, and Morocco, but expect some other global influences based on seasonality as well. There are nine primary sections to the current menu: Little Plates, Tapas, Crudos, Pastas & Paellas, Cured Meats, Fish, Meat, Salad, and Desserts.

Brothers Mitchell and Steven Rosenthal first met now-partner Björn Kock while the three men were working at Wolfgang Puck's Postrio in San Francisco more than 20 years ago. The chance meeting led to two decades of successful restaurant collaborations, notably with Town Hall Restaurant, Anchor & Hope, and Salt House, all in California.

In March, after years of planning and development, the team expanded to Arizona with the opening of Arboleda at Scottsdale Quarter.

The 6,500-square-foot restaurant is a love letter to the coastal eateries that border the Mediterranean. Spanish for “grove,” Arboleda has an actual living tree in its main dining room, helping give scale to the towering, curved cement walls and ceiling. The natural palate extends to the bar top and flooring, and many of the chairs are made of rich wood. There are some pops of color, primarily muted red, blue, and green hues in rugs, furniture, and stunning wine cabinets that double as art pieces.

One of the dining room’s walls is entirely made of glass, offering a peek at the large patio when closed and a seamless indoor-outdoor transition when open.

Of note are several innovative dishes, including a whipped foie gras cone with membrillo (quince paste) puree ($9); fry bread with crispy Iberico pork, spicy pepper jam, and pickled vegetables ($19); Hamachi crudo with a carrot puree, chili garlic crunch, black garlic vinegar, and crispy Brussels sprouts ($22); a Tuscan seafood stew called cacciucco, with salmon, clams, shrimp, calamari, and mussels ($39); and “el jorge,” a 32-ounce, 28-day aged rib-eye steak with roasted beef-fat potatoes and za’atar oil ($195).

The cocktail program features seven specialty cocktails as well as a specialty sangria made with ruby port. There are ample wines by the glass and bottle as well as a selection of beers, including local and European imports.

Arboleda is open Sunday and Monday from 5 to 9 p.m., Tuesday to Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m. Happy hour, featuring discounts on select drinks and an array of small bites, is offered weekdays from 3 to 5 p.m. Expect lunch and brunch in coming months as well.
