OBITUARIES The Honorable Kent C. Houck The Honorable Kent C. Houck, retired Richland County Circuit Court Judge, age 85 of Richland Center, died on Friday, April 9, 2021 at Schmidt Woodland Hills in Richland Center. Kent was born on August 16, 1935 in Richland Center to Nelson S. and Alice (Bowen) Houck. He graduated from Richland Center High School in 1953 and from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1959. He also received a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the ROTC program. Kent attended Transportation Basic Officer course at Fort Eustis, Virginia and J.A.G. school at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. He served as an officer in the United States Army Judge Advocate Generals Corps from 1959 to 1962 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in the Post Judge Advocates Office, one year as Assistant Legal Officer in the United states Disciplinary Barracks which was, at the time, the only military prison serving both the Army and Air Force. Following his honorable discharged in 1962, he returned to Richland Center where he joined his brother, Bowen D. Houck, in his law practice. Kent was elected as District Attorney of Richland County Wisconsin in January of 1962 and served in that position until May of 1965. Kent was appointed County Judge for Richland County in May of 1965 and was subsequently elected to that post. He served as a County Judge until 1978 when, through Court reorganization, the post became a Circuit Judge position. Kent served on the Wisconsin Supreme Court Judicial Education Committee for many years. Kent served as Circuit Judge in the 7th Judicial District, until retirement in July of 1997. Richland County is a one judge county, and he was responsible for the trial of every type of case that was brought in the County. After
retirement in 1997, he continued to work as a Reserve Judge and also as an arbitrator and mediator in civil cases. In the spring of 2002, Kent taught a course entitled Crime and Criminal Justice in the Sociology Department at the University of Wisconsin Richland. He served on the UW Richland Campus Foundation Board for 11 years, 7 years as President. Kent served on the Richland Hospital Executive Board, presided at many hundreds of weddings, (had a great 5-minute ceremony), was a member of the Town and County Presbyterian Church, was chair of the Bi-Cenntenial Committee in Richland County, was a member of the American Legion Post, and served as President of the Richland County Lions Club. Community service was very important to him. Kent married Marilyn Loft on December 16, 1978 and they enjoyed over 42 happy years together. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nelson and Alice Houck; Marilyns parents, Harry and Roselyn Loft; his brother and sister-in-law, Atty. Bowen and Anita Houck; a niece, Jane Houck and a nephew, Matthew Loft. Kent is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Richland Center; a sister-in-law, Judy Loft of Richland Center; a brother-in-law, John (Melody) Loft of Geneseo, IL; five nieces and nephews, Susan Houck (Berlye Middleton); Julia Houck (Kathy King); John (Lesley) Houck; Thomas (Kris) Houck and Lisa Sellers; as well as great nieces and nephews and many friends. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday, April 23, 2021 at the Stafford Funeral Home in Richland Center. Visitation will be held at the Stafford Funeral Home from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. on Thursday, April 22, 2021 and again on Friday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Richland Food Pantry; Ocooch Mountain Humane Society; Richland Center Fire Department; Wisconsin Wetland Association, Alzheimers Association or the A.D. Carroll Paul Ehrhardt Carroll Paul Ehrhardt, 68, of Richland Center died Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at the Richland Hospital. He was born on July 22, 1952 in Elkader, Iowa the son of William and Patricia (Mather) Ehrhardt. Carroll graduated from Central Community of Elkader High School in 1970, where he was active in FFA, along with 4-H. He attended Iowa State University from 1970-71. Carroll was a fifthgeneration farmer on the Ehrhardt farm, where he was proud of his angus cattle. He later moved to Richland County and was very proud of his dairy farm and his rotation grazing practices. Carroll is survived by his three children: Eric (Mary) Ehrhardt of Bangor, Lanette (Nathan) Knoll of Bangor, John (Sara) Ehrhardt of Richland Center; 5 grandchildren: Lucille, Kip, Cassidy, Carson, Carly; Mother: Patricia Breitsprecher of Monona, IA; Sisters and brother: Ruth Ehrhardt of Cedar Rapids, IA, Donna (Daniel) Ryherd of Weber City, IA, Mark (Coral) Ehrhardt of Monona, IA; many other relatives and friends. Carroll was preceded in death by his father William and sister-in-law Sandra Ehrhardt. Memorial services were held on Monday, April 19, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Peace United Church of Christ, 301 N. Main St, Elkader, IA 52043. Burial followed in the Eastside Cemetery in Elkader. A visitation was held on Monday, April 19, 2021 at the Peace United Church of Christ from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at 11:00 AM. The Pratt Funeral and Cremation Service is assisting the family with their arrangements.
