September 4, 2018 Dr. Gordon D. Merry, age 92, peacefully passed away on Tuesday September 4, 2018 at home. He was born November 2, 1925 near Richland Center, WI. He was the son of William and Ruby (Bender) Merry. He was married to Marian Brewer on September 11, 1948. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Veterinary School in 1954. He practiced Veterinary Medicine in Sun Prairie for 40 years until 1994. He is the third of six generations of Merry Hereford cattle breeders. Gordon marketed cattle all over the United States and sold a few in Canada as well as one in Argentina under the prefix of MGM (Marian and Gordon Merry). The family asks that in lieu of flowers please contribute to his endowment to the MGM scholarship fund which will be given to veterinary students with interest in Hereford cattle c/o Amy Cowan Hereford Youth Foundation, American Hereford Association, 11500 N. Ambassador Dr., Kansas City, MO 64153. September 9, 2018 Eleanore I. Astle, age 83, of Cazenovia passed away Sunday, September 9, 2018 at home with family by her side. She was born June 7, 1935 the daughter of Francis and Carol (Owen) Harrison. She married John Astle on May 25, 1957 at St. Anthony’s Germantown, WI. Eleanore began her working career right out of high school at Hankscraft. She then went to the Wollen Mill in Reedsburg; after having their first child she decided to stay home and raise their family. When she finally sent the last child to kindergarten, she went back to work at Hankscraft where she finished her working career of 37 years before retiring in 2003. After
retirement, Eleanore enjoyed spending time with her family. She loved to bake! She was a very giving, kind hearted, soft spoken devoted wifemother-grandmother-great grandmother and sister who was absolutely loved by all. Heaven just received another angel who will be deeply missed. Survivors include her husband of 61 years John Astle; 4 children: Kevin Astle, Tim (Cheryl) Astle, Diana (Dennis) Seep all of Cazenovia, Donna Crary (special friend Scott) of Hillpoint; 8 grandchildren: Brent (Stephanie) Astle, Jeremy (Lindsey) Seep, Joshua (Sara) Seep, Jessica Seep, Janea Sailing, Kate (Aaron) Marquardt, Kole Crary, and Kory Crary; 18 great-grandchildren; brothers: Francis Harrison of Cazenovia, Al (Jean) Harrison of Valton; a sister, Shirley (Bernie) Tourdot of Reedsburg; also lifelong friend Betty Durst of LaValle; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. ERNEST GOEBEL
September 12, 2018 Ernest Goebel, 98, of Lone Rock, died Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at Upland Hills Healthcare. He was born on January 28, 1920 in Mahaska, Kansas the son of Adolph and Minnie (Roehs) Goebel. On August 16, 1940 Ernest was united in marriage to Lillie Bergmann in Belleville, Kansas and she preceded him in death on March 3, 2015. He worked in an airplane factory in the 1940’s and farmed for 30 years in Iowa and Wisconsin. Ernest enjoyed his grandchildren and working outside with his garden and flowers. He was a happy upbeat person and helped where he could. Ernest belonged to the Lone Rock Congregational Church. He served on the Lone Rock Board. Ernest has had a good long life and will be missed by many. Ernest is survived by 3 children: Verda (Raymond) Moore, Larry Goebel, and Michael (Michelle) Goebel; 10 grandchildren: Neal (Amy) Moore, Kevin Moore, Tracy (Mike) Guinther, Dale (Sally Lee) Schwanz, Aaron Schwanz, Jason Schwanz, Brian (Susan) Goebel, David (Cassandra Bower) Goebel, Amanda Goebel, Zachary (Chelsey Driessen) Goebel; 19 great grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; other relatives, and friends. September 14, 2018 Betty L. Nelson, age 87, of Richland Center (Bear Valley) passed away on Friday, September 14, 2018 at Pine Valley Community Village. She was the daughter of Arthur Floyd and Bessie Emma (Mann) Schoonover, born on November 7, 1930, in Fall River, WI. She graduated from the Ithaca High School in 1948 and on July 22, 1949 she married her high school sweetheart, Norbert F. Nelson of Bear Valley. She lived most of her 67 years of marriage on their farm north of Bear Valley where they raised their five children. Betty was a very hardworking farmwife holding down the fort on the farm while Norbert worked at Oscar Mayer for 13 years. She was a 4-H sewing leader, sold Avon, did ceramics, bowled in a league over 20 years, worked at Oakwood Fruit Farm a few fall seasons, was an Ithaca Schools teacher’s aide for over 25 years, a bird watcher, and did quilting and
cross stitching. She was a member of the Little Brown Church of Bear Valley and of the Willow Valley Church in Ithaca. She loved going on picnics to Devils Lake with the family most every Sunday of the summer. After they retired from farming they spent their winters in Apache Junction, Arizona. Betty accumulated lots of books over the years and instilled the love of reading in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Betty is survived by her five children: Nancy (Tom) Clary of Bear Valley, WI, Margaret (Arthur) Simpson of Holmen, WI, David (Rita) Nelson of Bear Valley, WI, Larry (Sherry) Nelson of Ithaca, Barbara (Burf) Mayfield of Bear Valley, WI; 14 grandchildren; 33 great grand-children; one greatgreat granddaughter; brother Stanley Schoonover; sistersin-law Beverly Schoonover, Vernie Schoonover, Sharon Nelson; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. SEPTEMBER 13 - OCTOBER 18 In September, Agrace HospiceCare will begin “Journey Through Grief,” a grief support group series, in Richland Center. This group is for adults who are grieving a death, and any local resident is welcome, even if the person who died did not have hospice care. Journey Through Grief meets weekly for six weeks at Schmitt Woodland Hills Community Room, 1400 W. Seminary Street, Richland Center. It is scheduled for Thursdays, September 13 through October 18, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. If a person’s loved one who died was served by Agrace or another hospice in the past 12 months, there is no charge to attend this group. Modest fees apply thereafter, and fees can be lowered or waived, if needed.The group will be led by Colleen Pulvermacher, MS, certified grief support specialist. Pre-registration is required. Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP) - offers payments to eligible producers for livestock death losses in excess of normal mortality due to adverse weather. Producers will be required to provide verifiable documentation of death losses resulting from an eligible adverse weather event and must submit a notice of loss to their local FSA office within 30 calendar days of when the loss of livestock is apparent. Tree Assistance Program (TAP) – provides assistance to eligible orchardists and nursery tree growers for qualifying tree, shrub, and vine losses due to natural disaster. Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program (ELAP) - provides emergency relief for losses due to feed or water shortages, disease, adverse weather, or other conditions, which are not adequately addressed by other disaster programs. In order to be considered eligible, harvested forage must be baled; forage that is only cut, raked or windrowed is not eligible. Producers must submit a notice of loss to their local FSA office within 30 calendar days of when the loss is apparent. Emergency Loan Program – Available to producers with agriculture operations located in a county under a primary or contiguous Secretarial Disaster designation. These low-interest loans help producers recover from production and physical losses due to drought or flooding. Emergency Conservation Program (ECP) - provides emergency funding for farmers and ranchers to rehabilitate land severely damaged by natural disasters; including fence losses.
