ALTA RAE BARNES
February 3, 2020 Alta Rae Barnes, age 84, passed away on February 3, 2020 at Vernon Manor in Viroqua, WI. Alta Rae (Turner) Barnes was born August 27, 1935 to Albert and Vinnie (Green) Turner, Webster Township, Vernon County, Viola, WI. She was the youngest of six children. She attended Elk Run Elementary School and graduated from Viola High School in 1953. She spent the following summer working at Harnischfeger in Milwaukee. She and her friend Roberta, went to see several of the Milwaukee Braves baseball games. It was the first year the Braves played in Milwaukee. She then returned home to attend Vernon County Normal School in Viroqua. She was introduced to Lyall Barnes by a mutual friend; they were married on July 24, 1954 at the EUB (now Methodist) Church in Boaz, WI. They had two daughters, Judy Rae and Amy Lorraine. Later they
had two grandsons, Patrick and Ethan, (Amy’s sons). They lived 54 years on a small 54 acre farm in Sabin in Richland County, WI. Alta enjoyed being in the “Sabin Handy Gals Homemakers Club”. She was happy to live in a farming community. She was always concerned about the future for small farmers.Lyall was a livestock hauler and dealer. Alta was his “Gal Friday”. She enjoyed refinishing furniture and upholstery, working on home improvements, sewing and embroidery. Alta greatly appreciated animals and working in the garden and flowerbeds. In December of 2007, she and Lyall moved to a home in Viroqua and retired there. Alta is survived by her husband, Lyall; two daughters, Judy (Dan) Kirchoff, French Island, Amy Little (Garry Bahr-fiance’). St Joseph Ridge; two grandsons, Patrick Little, Minneapolis, MN and Ethan Little, Denver, CO; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Verda (Edwin) Gray, Rockford, Coral (Robert) Chariton, Milwaukee, Lola (Edward) Holland, Rockford, Doris (John) Deal, Readstown and Viroqua; and one brother, Paul (Theo) Turner, Rockford. Funeral Services will be held at a later date at the Viola Cemetery. The VosseteigLarson Funeral Home, 123 W. Decker, St., in Viroqua will be handling the arrangements. (608) 637-2100.
DONNALENE “DJ” WILSON
February 6, 2020 Donnalene “DJ” Wilson, 82 of Richland Center, died Thursday February 6, 2020 at the UW Hospital in Madison following a brief illness. Donnalene was born in Richland County, WI in 1938. She lived, worked and enjoyed her entire life in Richland County. Donnalene was a strong, independent and faithful woman. She was devoted to her faith in God, her children, her grandchildren, her great grandchildren and her friends. Known to many as DJ, she loved to garden, bird watch and be out in nature. The “DJ bird watching gene” made its way to her daughter and grandson. She had a passion for making rugs and an even bigger passion of locating and sourcing materials for those rugs. One of the greatest gifts you could receive in life was a Donnalene Wilson rug, as many of her children, grandchildren, family and friends would testify to. Donnalene became a widow at an early age, but forged ahead in the
raising of her 3 wonderful children, Joyce, Karlene and Jimmie. Donnalene’s passion for the outdoors and for providing for her family was evident by the garden she grew each season and the wonderful vegetables she would preserve for use all year long. For much of Donnalene’s life, “farm life” was her life even though she worked other jobs off the farm. Later in life, DJ moved to Richland Center and found “City Life” had some perks as well. The stores and restaurants were closer and the Senior Center provided a nice venue for walking and fellowship. Donnalene was a very humble lady, too humble to understand all of the lives she impacted over her years on this earth. Every single person who knew Donnalene is a better human being because of that opportunity. Survivors of Donnalene “DJ” Wilson include: Her Brother: Francis and Anna Fry of Loves Park, IL. Her Children: Joyce and Jeff Sutton of Mesa, AZ, Karlene and Adam Hess of Richland Center, Jimmie and Jenny Wilson of Richland Center. Her Grandchildren: Jesse and Emily Sutton of Arizona, Jason Sutton of Colorado, Kane Moran and Sarah Willis of Madison, WI, Jadah Barto and Ryan Granger of Richland Center, Amber and Mike Hilby of Richland Center, Samantha and Dustin Jurgensen of the Bear Valley area, Brett Wilson and Taylor Daldegan of Colorado. Her Greatgrandchildren: Wyatt Hilby and Emma Hilby of Richland
Center, Addyson Jurgensen of the Bear Valley Area, Jamison Sutton of Arizona. Special friend: Jack Bauer of Richland Center. Along with nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Monday February 10, 2020 at 1:00 PM at the Pratt Memorial Chapel with burial having followed in the Bowen Cemetery. Friends could call on Monday (Feb 10) from 11:00 AM until the time of the service at 1:00 PM. A lunch was served at the Pratt Fellowship Hall following the burial. COLONEL RICHARD BROYLES (RET) January 29, 2020 My father Colonel Richard Broyles (Ret) passed away this morning. He is survived by the love of his life Carole. His three children (Stacy, Eric, and Adrienne). And 8 grandchildren: Sarah, Sienna, Owen, Abby, Emma, Izzy, Kyah, and Ethan. My father was a hard man. He served 27 years in the army as a flight surgeon specializing in hyperbaric medicine. He was an incredibly crafty man. He built furniture, a garage for one of his previous houses, and most recently gutted a derelict farmhouse in Wisconsin and beautifully renovated it with my Mother in his late 60s. Dad was an adventurer just like my mom and possibly a pirate. He bought a sailboat when I

was about 9 and we sailed every weekend in Panama City beach. We sailed as a family around the Greek isles and Yugoslavia before it dissolved. We adventured through Europe and the five us went skiing in Bavaria, toured the battle of the bulge, and participated in numerous volksmarches (our longest was a 50 km). Right before he retired he had a horrible table saw mishap and almost cut off his right hand. A couple years after that, him and my mom through hiked the Appalachian trail for two straight years. And through hiked the Colorado trail. And biked the Katy trail in Missouri. After mom got breast cancer, he throttled back a bit by buying an RV and roving the United States for 15 years or so. My mom and he settled down just west of Madison Wisconsin. Dad and I had a mildly contentious relationship. We are both type A - alphas and as a teenager and young adult we didn’t always see eye to eye. But he was one of the hardest working and one of the smartest men I’ve ever known. And a man who fiercely loved my mom. Goodbye dad. Happy hiking.
