NAME OF BUSINESS: Walsh’s Ace Hardware Year established: 1913 Tell us a little about your business: What do you do? We are a family owned hardware store. We serve the farm, home and hardware needs locally. We are a full line hardware store with plumbing, electrical and hardware. Our paint departments and Lawn and Garden are fully stocked and seasonally ready to go. We have greenhouses each Spring and an awesome Ladies Night in the Fall. How many “neighbors” do you employ? In total we have 140 employees. Richland Center employs 32, Muscoda employs 12. Over the years we have employed thousands of neighbors and intend to continue doing “The Crew at Walsh’s Ace Hardware thinkin so. We are many times a first job and we g local” value the role of teaching and preparing today’s youth how to work in a team environment and provide Legendary Customer Service. Recognizing you can do business anywhere…why are you here? The community support is the reason we’re here. It’s been awesome over the years! It’s not about being the biggest, or cheapest or the loudest. We want to be the best partner with the community that we can be. The loyalty from the community has been strong throughout the years. We want to repay that with loyalty of our own. What’s the one thing you wish everyone knew about your business? We take customer service to heart and really care. We train, train and train some more to be sure we’re serving the community the best we can. We really try to attract and retain the best customer service oriented folks in the area. We also have a primary objective within our communities to support charitable events and organizations. We exist to serve. What makes your business unique? Our business is comprised of “neighbors” and depends on them. We also contribute and support local charities and causes. It is one of the reasons we do what we do – where we do it. We don’t do anything that you can’t find in thousands of other places. It is HOW we do it that matters. We care that it works for you and that you are ready to tackle whatever projects you might have. Other than providing jobs and paying taxes what are some other ways you give back to the community? We are big supporters of veteran causes, GRACE and Children’s Miracle Network. We are also continually providing support to smaller needs. We are many times a first job for someone. And, we take that introductory training to the workforce with pride and sincerity. We donate directly more than $60,000 annually back into the communities. If you include things like Ace Rewards and discounts the total is much higher. Parting thoughts….please share anything else you’d like our readers to know: Although the community, schools, programs and such exist without us, we don’t exist without them! Being enabled to serve our community for four generations is a privilege. We want to continue to earn and preserve that trust. and attended the Richland County Teachers College. Bernice worked at the Badger Munitions Factory near Sauk City during WWII. She married Leonard Sumwalt on Oct. 16, 1949, in Mooresville, Ind. in a service officiated by Rev. Don Sumwalt. Bernice and Leonard bought a f arm one mile north of Loyd, later added an adjacent f arm, where they lived until 1997. They raised Holsteins, pigs, sheep, chickens, rabbits, vegetables, and four children. Bernice taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and cooked for many a potluck and banquet at the Loyd (now Willow Valley) United Methodist Church. She loved to bake bread, garden, can vegetables, sing, and read. She valued education, taught songs and nursery rhymes to her children and grandchildren, and was proud her children graduated from college. After Leonard’s death in 1998 Bernice lived in Richland Center; then lived with daughter Ruth for 11 years in Sheboygan, WI. Her final home was Azura Memory Care where, to the delight of staff, she often broke into memorized verse and songs from childhood. Survivors include four children; John (Jo) of Loyd, Alan (Linda) of Dousman, Robert (Susan) Patterson-Sumwalt of Mequon, and Ruth (Bruce) Smith of Sheboygan; seven grandchildren, Kathryn,

Jessica, Orrin, Nelson, Andrew, Marshall, and Parker; and five great-grandchildren, Phoebe, Isaac, Faye, Lily, and Leonard. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Florence, Mary & Kathryn, and brothers Robert, Max, Theron, and Verne. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, April 7, 2017 at the Pratt Memorial Chapel in Richland Center, WI. Visitation will be held Thursday, April 6, 2017 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM and again Friday, April 7, 2017 from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM at the Pratt Memorial Chapel. Lunch and fellowship will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made, in Bernice’s name, to Bookworm Gardens, Sheboygan, WI, where Bernice loved to smell the flowers and watch the children play. The Pratt Funeral and Cremation Service is assisting the family with their arrangements. Online condolences may be made at prattfuneralservice.com

Of course, one of the best and easiest ways to bring the outdoors is through houseplants. Accept all seedlings and shoots, visit your local nursery for other options and place all of your houseplants where they can be seen. It doesn’t take much to bring the outdoors into your space. Start sprucing it up now, and when the sun goes down and you’re forced to come inside, you might not mind it so much.

Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day’s worth of oxygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year.

can expand and properly anchor the tree. The next method of success is to ensure that the tree has a large enough hole to contain the existing root ball and allow for roots to grow and expand. Better Homes and Gardens experts say to prepare a hole that is two to three times as wide as the root ball of the tree. Treat the root ball gently. If the roots are wrapped in burlap, remove the burlap or push it to the bottom of the hole. Backfill the hole with soil and check that the tree is straight. Stake the tree to help it stay upright and straight until the roots anchor it more effectively. A layer of mulch around the base of the tree can prevent weeds and reduce water loss. Water daily for several weeks until the roots have fanned out.

Now it is time to amend the soil. It’s not enough to enrich only the soil in the hole where the tree will be placed. Move out into a circular area beyond where the roots will start so that roots

Vinyl siding is a big investment, and when done right, it can add tremendous value to a home. If the time has come for you to side your home, make sure you choose the right installer. The best siding in the world won’t make up for poor installation. Here are some tips to ensure you select the best company for the job. Ask around. Find out where friends and family got their siding done and how well the installation went. Browse ads as well. The best companies will have informative websites and offer free estimates. When you have a list of potential installers, give them a call and set up an appointment. Most will jump at the opportunity to send out someone to talk to you. If not, cross them off your list. If they are too busy to talk you now, they will most certainly be too busy to talk you later down the road during installation.

By Tresa Erickson

When interviewing potential installers, make sure they are knowledgeable about their products and procedures. The salesperson should be able to show you the siding products the company offers as well as point out each product’s features, benefits and warranties. They should also walk you through the installation process and offer design assistance and solutions to your unique needs. Ask about licensing, insurance and certification. Is everything in order? Can they provide a list of references? Do they seem easy to work with? Before the salesperson leaves, make sure you get a written estimate. This should describe the work in detail, identify the products that will be used, and list all of the material and labor costs. It should also address time and payment schedules. You should know exactly what you

Both options have their pros and cons. Refacing can generally be done in a week or less, whereas installing new cabinets can take weeks. New cabinets mean new everything inside and out, whereas with refaced cabinets, you get just new doors, drawers and hardware. If your cabinets are older, that could be a plus as many cabinets built 20 or 30 years ago are of better quality than some of the cabinets on the market today. Refacing will do nothing for cabinets that are in poor condition or

drawer fronts, a wine rack or a pull-out trash bin. Some refacers will even replace countertops, sinks and flooring. Need a cabinet above the refrigerator? No problem. Your refacer can custom-build one for an additional fee. Refacing works best on cabinets that are in good condition but could use some updating. The average cost for a job runs from

Replacing is just what it sounds like. All of the old kitchen cabinets are removed and new ones are installed. This option is much more time consuming, but if your cabinets are in terrible shape or you are looking to create a better layout or add storage, new cabinets are your best bet. But, be prepared to shell out some money. New cabinets can cost anywhere from $5,000 on up. Add in the cost of installation and extras like molding, and you can see why replacement is the more

Kitchens are often the heart of a home. They’re the place where people gather together to enjoy each other’s company as they prepare food, pay bills or do other chores. Kitchens work overtime and can take a real beating over the years, especially the cabinets. While some homeowners choose to reface their cabinets, others choose to replace them entirely. There are pros and cons to each, of course, but either way, the heart of the home will get a much-needed facelift.

Oil-based paint offers many advantages. It goes on smoothly and covers a lot. It shrinks very little, making sanding between coats unnecessary. It dries slowly, giving you more time to work. It produces a shiny, hard coat that is tough to penetrate and holds up well in high-traffic areas.

people. Although hard, it will crack over time. It may also fade and yellow. Oil-based paint can be difficult to clean up. You must use solvents. It is also hazardous and must be disposed of properly. Latex also offers many advantages. It is widely available and is better for the environment altogether. It dries quickly and doesn’t yellow. with some reputable contractors. They can tell you whether your cabinets are in good enough condition to reface and advise you as to the best route to take. If you are looking for more counter space, for example, new cabinets may be the way to go.

Budget is always a factor. How much do you have to spend? Generally, it costs twice as much to replace cabinets as it does to reface them. Should you purchase stock cabinets or install them yourself, however, you may be able to save enough to afford new cabinets. Look around and do your homework. The right cabinets, new or updated, can enhance the feel of any kitchen. Review the options carefully and make the right choice for you. Reface or replace, you’re sure to end up with a kitchen your friends and family will enjoy hanging out in.

The DIY movement has inspired many homeowners to tackle home repair and remodeling projects on their own. DIY projects can be rewarding, and many homeowners who have embraced the DIY movement have discovered talents they never before knew they had. But no matter how simple popular home renovation television shows make remodeling projects appear, homeowners should know that such undertakings are far more difficult than they appear on television. Homeowners who overestimate their abilities and the time they have to complete projects can cost themselves substantial amounts of money. In fact, there are a variety of reasons homeowners might want to work with professional contractors when tackling home improvement projects.

But applying such an approach to home improvement projects is risky and potentially dangerous, not to mention costly. Experienced professional contractors with strong track records (seek recommendations from friends or neighbors) won’t have to go through trial and error and are therefore more likely than DIYers to complete a project on time and on budget.

Inspiration One oft-overlooked benefit of working with professional contractors is the likelihood that they can draw up ideas for projects that homeowners might otherwise never have thought up on their own. Homeowners without specific ideas in mind can ask contractors to come up with various scenarios before committing to a particular one. Veteran contractors can draw on years of experience to Experience A trial and error approach create designs that DIcan work with various Yers might be incapable projects and problems. of coming up with and/

or incapable of seeing through to completion. Cost Conventional wisdom suggests it’s less expensive to do something yourself than to hire someone else to do it for you, but that’s not necessarily true of home improvement projects. Labor costs typically account for a substantial amount of professionally contracted projects, but homeowners can cut those costs by volunteering to do some of the

simpler tasks themselves. In addition, contractors often purchase materials at a much lower cost than individual homeowners because contractors buy in bulk. So while labor costs might be lower on DIY projects, the cost of materials can offset those savings. Resale value Many homeowners renovate their homes with eyes on improving the resale value of those homes. But if homeowners want to showcase a newly remodeled kitchen when selling their homes, they should be prepared for

prospective buyers to ask who worked on the project. Fearing potential problems down the road, some buyers might be put off by homes that were remodeled by DIYers and not professional contractors. Renovating a home on your own can be a rewarding project for homeowners. But it’s important that homeowners recognize the many benefits of working with professional contractors before making any final decisions with regard to who will tackle their next project.
