Chamber Welcome A newsletter will be issued soon to highlight our members and their services, to share special events our businesses hold and to inform the community about social events going on in the area. We’re also planning to hold a business fair this year. The Chamber is helping to sponsor Grill for a Cause, a charity grilling event that’s been in the Brooklyn area for a number of years. We want to encourage our members and the community to enter the competition or just come and enjoy the day. We’re also helping our own Brittany Springer bring back the 4th of July Fireworks. Watch for more information on both of these events. The Brooklyn Area Chamber of Commerce is looking forward to an informative and funfilled 2019. Please continue your support of Brooklyn’s businesses and the wonderful community groups throughout the year.

The Brooklyn Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to the 2nd Annual Brooklyn Area Community Guide. We want to thank the businesses and community groups who helped make the inaugural Guide a success, and we thank all the residents who support our local businesses. Brooklyn is a small community and it’s a great community. We have a wonderful elementary school that’s ranked in the top quarter of all elementary schools in Wisconsin. The school district and the Brooklyn Recreation Committee work hard all year to ensure that the families in the area have plenty of activities. The Chamber works to promote and serve the businesses and groups in the community.

The downtown businesses remained a strong commercial district, housing a century bank, post office and retail stores . The village has continued to grow from a population of 250 to 1,417 with residential developments including Melvins Addition to the current Brooklyn Commons . through his property . The railroad laid tracks in 1864 and Capwell filed a plat map and registered as the proprietor of the Village of Brooklyn in 1868 . The railroad allowed residents to travel to larger communities, brought commercial development, and the village grew . It formally incorporated as a Village in March of 1905 . Merchants from Evansville, Oregon and Rutland came to Brooklyn soon after to set up markets and businesses . Primarily an agronomy economy, the Plat Map of 1891 shows stockyards and the first industry, the Duplex Windmill factory, were both located on Market Street . They were followed by blacksmiths, a church, shops, railroad hotel and the largest grain mill between Chicago and Minneapolis . The first school was built in 1883 for $3,000 in the Legion Park . This building burned down and a second school was built in 1903 at the site of the present school . Our school was incorporated with the Oregon

The Village of Brooklyn is home to approximately 1,417 people. 2018 saw the Village expand their services in both the Police Department and Public Works Department. Wade Engelhart was promoted to Police Chief at the end of 2017, and that was followed up by the hiring of a new fulltime officer last year. In the Public Works Department, Mark Langer retired after eight years with the Village, and Leif Spilde was promoted to Director. In addition to longterm employee, Curt Golz, we hired a new Assistant Director and an additional laborer. All three new employees have been wonderful additions to the Village, so please make them feel welcome. 2019 is shaping up to be a busy year. Brooklyn Area Veterans Memorial The Brooklyn Area Veterans Memorial reflects a commitment to the community and our soldiers . Since the Revolutionary War until today, over 800 men and women have

left the Brooklyn area to enlist in the Armed Forces to defend our country . To honor these heroes, Brooklyn Area Veterans Committee and advisors developed the Memorial to depict military eras that correlate with the events of Brooklyn area history . This memorial is a reality due to dedicated workers, generous donors and a wonderful commitment by our community and citizens . This tribute to our veterans will be preserved for many decades through multiple donations, purchase of pavers, fund raisers and bequests . Contact the American Legion by calling (608) 455-5049, emailing brownjp22@gmail .com or send information to P .O . Box 272, Brooklyn, WI 53521, www .brooklynveteransmemorial .org .
