CANTON is a charming town that sits an hour east of Dallas on I-20. Its vibrant downtown is the heart of the city, which is home to some of the best shopping and dining opportunities in all of East Texas. As a National Main Street City, Canton is proud of its rich heritage, and active volunteers work tirelessly to preserve it.

Canton is world-renowned for its First Monday Trade Days. Once a month, Thursday through Sunday before the frst Monday of every month, Canton turns into a shopper’s paradise. CARTHAGE , ““The Best Small Town in Texas.” Visit Carthage! We have it all, from great shopping on the downtown Carthage Square to one-of-a-kind attractions. CLARKSVILLE and Red River County are older than the State of Texas. Red River County once encompassed all or part of 39 diferent counties in present Northeast Texas. James Clark founded Clarksville in 1833. Red River County was established in 1837 and in 1838, Clarksville became the county seat. Sam Houston, Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie all entered Texas through Red River County, thus our claim as the “Gateway To Texas”.

Our recently restored historic Red River County Courthouse was built in 1884-85, with records dating back to the days of the Republic of Texas. The First Presbyterian Church in Clarksville, formed in 1833, is the oldest Protestant congregation in Texas. Clarksville is a Texas Main Street City and a Preserve America Community. Our historic downtown square beckons you to visit our antique shops, museums of history and restaurants. Visit the Texas Historic Cemetery, where William Becknell, “The Father of the Santa Fe Trail” is buried. Tour the home of Charles DeMorse, known as “The Father of Texas Journalism”, Miss Belle’s House, the Old Jail Museum, the Lennox House, the First Presbyterian Church and the Clarksville Cemetery with the frst burial dating back to 1838.

Each year visitors travel to Commerce for the annual Bois D’Arc Bash, held on the 4th weekend in September, which celebrates Commerce’s heritage as the Bois D’Arc Capital of Texas. The frst Bash was held in 1986, and it has continued to be one of the premier festivals in northeast Texas. The festival includes a parade, over 100 food, arts & crafts, game, and information vendors, golf tournament, carnival, games and activities for children of all ages. The Bash ofers great music on the Ben E. Keith stage on Friday night and Saturday all day into the evening. The Bash is known throughout northeast Texas as a very organized and well-attended event.

Other attractions in Commerce include the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum, Texas A&M University-Commerce, a state-of-the-art planetarium, the Lt. General Claire Chennault memorial markers, and several beautiful parks.

GILMER, the charming and historic downtown square beckons you to come and spend the day. Gilmer is the county seat of Upshur county and our historic courthouse sits in the center of our red brick streets on the square. Begin your day at one of our 35 historic markers or the historic Upshur Museum and work your way around where you will fnd locally owned and operated stores with woodworking, unique gifts, antiques, clothing for adults and children, and décor items. Afterward stop for lunch at one of the wonderful eateries and enjoy our Gilmer hospitality.

Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy our nature trails, scenic bike rides, as well as Texas Motorized Trails located on Barnwell Mountain, dove hunting ranches, and outdoor wineries. Enjoy fshing at our beautiful Lake Gilmer, a renowned crappie and bass lake tucked away in the Piney Woods.

Our famous East Texas Yamboree, a 4-day event, held annually, the 3rd Thursday in October, welcomes over 100,000 guests to celebrate with pageants, parades, carnival rides, music, dancing, and great food. You will want to fnd the tastiest yam specialty in the town during our 86th Festival.

In November our Christmas decorations go up on the courthouse lawn and the square, the tree is lighted and Santa visits early during our bi-annual ARTWALK, Art on the Bricks. Our annual North Pole Coloring Contest presents its winners on this night.

As December rolls around, you’ll want to be in Gilmer for the Annual Yulefest, held downtown Gilmer on Saturday, Dec. 2. Activities, including; Breakfast with Santa, a Children’s carnival, free activities on Candy Cane Lane, food trucks, arts/crafts vendors, parade, and more. Old Saint Nick, will greet your family.

The William Becknell Cemetery is also known as Robbinsville Cemetery after the community that once thrived in this area. The cemetery is located in Red River County six miles west of Clarksville, Texas on US Highway 82. 33 Ezekiel Airship Pittsburg

Baptist minister & inventor Burrell Cannon (18481922) led some Pittsburg investors to establish the Ezekiel Airship Co. and build a craft described in the Biblical book of Ezekiel. The ship had large, fabric-covered wings, powered by an engine that turned four sets of paddles. It was built in a nearby machine shop and was briefy airborne late in 1902, a year before the Wright Brothers frst fight. On its way to the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904, a storm destroyed the airship. In 1913, a second model crashed, and Rev. Cannon gave up the project. The airship on display is a life-sized replica.
