Welcome to the 7th Annual LIC Arts Open. Our festival this year has over 80,000 sq. feet of exhibition space and features hundreds of artists and over 150 Open Studios. We have consolidated the number of venues with fewer micro pop-up shows in cafes and restaurants in favor of larger spaces, most of which were provided by either developers or property companies that are active in LIC and sympathetic to the aims of the festival. These companies, Atlas, Rockrose, Savanna Fund, Plaxall, and Hakimian, obviously recognize that the ambience that is the result of our artists enclave is worth preserving. This year we opened a semi-permanent LIC Arts Open Gallery at The Factory on 47th Ave with great potential for this to become a permanent space. We were also pleased that LIC-Artists were gifted a semi-permanent Gallery space by Plaxall. These two things are great examples of how a community that includes small artists studios and giant corporations can come together for the mutual benefit of promoting this wonderful area and improving the public perception of a district that not so long ago, people thought was in Long Island. We are certainly on the map now, and as the shining new city rises around us, we can be sure that this festival and the various activities of the arts community have made Long Island City a destination. I am so thrilled to share with you the incredible work that will be on display, and as much as it’s hard to single out individual shows, I urge you to see the massive combined show at The Factory on the 4th floor which Karen Dimit [Upstanders], Jude Amsel [Global Awareness] and Orestes Gonzalez [Disruption] have curated. Although these are individually curated shows, they are on display together in a gorgeous space. On the ground floor you will find a group show in our brand new LIC Arts Open Gallery. Other notable large shows include the LIC-A group show ‘Members & Guests’ at The Plaxall Gallery on 46th Ave and Plastique 2 at the amazing Anable Basin Event Space. We are also grateful to LIC-A for allowing us to share The Plaxall Gallery for our Micro-Solos with a generous donation of almost 100 linear feet for artists who might otherwise not have space. While at The Factory, don’t forget to visit the Falchi next door for the group show in Rm 1180, curated by Miguel Luciano and Chris Haag from PS1. During the weekend from 12 – 6pm, take the unique opportunity to see and meet artists in their workspaces, but leave some energy to come to our receptions and parties. I will be visiting as many studios and exhibitions as I can over the festival and would love to hear your thoughts if we meet along the trail! Richard Mazda Executive Director

SECRETO Maria P. Vila's Secreto is an invitation to free ourselves collectively from the untold. Based on the premise that secrets can generate shadowy places in our unconscious mind, this project invites people to receive the secrets of others and release their own. The premise supposes that if you read a secret, you leave a secret. In this way, a web of confidential information will be woven, having been revealed in a spontaneous way and, in turn, will prompt a moment’s reflexion about our memories. This project is intended to travel looking for secrets, which will later be used to create a book.

Theo Sahos is a photographer from Astoria, and his 20-year career in Queens has served as a tremendous source of inspiration for his artistic work. In this spirit, he has composed a portfolio of photographs from the borough, using his background in art and architecture as a foundation. In every image, Sahos brings together multiple elements to capture the essence of Queens within a given sense of time and place. The diversity and life of the neighborhood are constantly in flux, and this exhibition captures those moments in time which happen here every day. nycted.com

SAVING JAMAICA BAY
”Saving Jamaica Bay” tells the story of how one community, led by a family with roots in the area stretching back more than 100 years, fought the government and overcame Hurricane Sandy to clean up and restore the largest open space in New York City. Dan Hendrick's documentary, narrated by actress Susan Sarandon, symbolizes efforts to preserve urban nature, combat climate change, and restore our national parks.
GLOBAL AWARENESS
Nature has been inspiring artists for centuries, and its beauty has been captured in paintings, sculptures, photographs and a variety of other media. But some artists take the relationship between art and the environment a step further, creating works from nature itself or producing artworks that make bold statements about the natural world and the imprint mankind has left on it. In the exhibition GLOBAL AWARENESS are artists who are commenting on man’s relationship with our planet. These artists have the power to make environmentalism a priority and bring green initiatives to the forefront of cultural conversations. Curator Jude Amsel. Artists: Charles Cohen, Linda Cunningham, Luis Zimad Lamboy, Luba Lukova, Juha Metso, Barry Stern, Joanne Rae Zeller
THE DESERT WALK

Funding for The Desert Walk Series has been made possible in part by the Puffin Foundation and Barbara Deming Memorial Funds. The Walk Project is a four part series – Desert, Water, Mountain and Urban Walk, and is a fiscally sponsored project of New York Foundation for the Arts.
