Ancient Greek settlers, Roman and Byzantine emperors, Venetian doges and Ottoman caliphs have coveted this sun-dappled, island-dotted coast of Croatia and Montenegro for centuries. Yet, situated at the crux of the Mediterranean and Central Europe, this magnificent stretch of the Adriatic coastline has escaped the machinery of mass tourism. The small, well-preserved medieval towns, phenomenal monu ments, palm-lined promenades and exquisite land and seascapes have retained their authenticity and original character for you to explore with your fellow Rice travelers. Croatia and Montenegro are best experienced by sea aboard a small ship. On the private-style Corinthian, your seven-day voyage along Croatia and Montenegro’s sun-dappled coastline will explore not only well-known towns and sites such as Dubrovnik and Korcula, but also less known and undiscovered gems such as Vis and Lastovo islands. You will sail to Rab, one of the most beautiful towns along Croatia’s coast and Split, an ancient city centered on the formidable Palace of Diocletian. Tour back-to-back UNESCO World Heritage sites Mostar, with its ethereally graceful Stari Most (“The Old Bridge”) and Kotor, spectacularly set at the head of a fjord-like bay beneath towering mountains. You will visit secluded bays where you can enjoy swimming and kayaking on the ship’s fleet of kayaks. For the more active travelers, Corinthian carries its own bikes, giving you the opportunity to explore country lanes. With all shore excursions included and a variety of activities to choose from, this trip will allow you to explore this corner of globe any way you desire.

Stay in distinctive lodgings and experience the rich history of Portugal and Spain during this two-week Iberian sojourn. The last time this trip was offered, it sold out quickly. Beginning in Lisbon, travelers on this exclusive Rice departure will tour the capital city’s highlights and take an excursion to the National Palace of Queluz. Travel through the picturesque Alentejo district, a region of olive groves, vineyards and wheat fields, to one of Portugal’s finest pousadas set in a former 15 th century convent. Explore Evora, a treasure-trove of Portuguese history and architecture and an UNESCO World Heritage site reflecting its Roman and Moorish heritage. Discover the beauty and romance of Seville andalucia’s Spanish capital and the place that inspired Carmen and Don Giovanni. Spend two nights in tiny Ronda, one of Spain’s oldest, most charming and most aristocratic towns set high in the mountains with white-washed houses clinging improbably to the edge of El Tajo Gorge. From there, you will travel to Granada, former stronghold of Moorish Spain romantically set in the Sierra Nevada. There, tour the Alhambra, one of the world’s most remarkable fortresses and palace of Spain’s last Moorish rulers. Sprawled across a hilltop above the Darro River, the Alhambra commands breathtaking views of the city below. Visit Toledo, capital of medieval Spain and a tour highlight. End your journey in Madrid, Spain’s urbane capital, whose wealth of attractions includes the imposing 18 th century Royal Palace and the world-renowned Prado museum, which displays treasures by Spanish masters and an important collection of Flemish and Italian masterpieces. Extend your stay in Spain with an optional “On Your Own” extension in Barcelona for four days and three nights.

The classic Polar bear Adventure Almost every person who is fortunate enough to see a polar bear does so with the bear in captivity. However, in the remote grain port of Churchill, located on the west coast of Canada’s Hudson Bay, Rice travelers will experience the excitement of witnessing bears living freely in their own natural habitat. In partnership with the Houston Zoo, you will experience a trip that brings nature to life. Every fall, the tundra surrounding Churchill becomes a stopover for more than 1,000 bears on their annual migration to hunt for food on the frozen ice of the Hudson Bay. Large numbers of these usually solitary bears can be found in Churchill at this time of year, making it the “Polar Bear Capital of the World.” From the safety of tundra vehicles, you can view these majestic creatures within close range. It is also common to see gyrfalcons, snowy owls, ptarmigans and Arctic foxes. Your knowledgeable expedition leader will be on hand to discuss polar bear behavior, natural history and adaptations to the Arctic way of life. During the day, young male bears playfight, mothers cautiously explore with their cubs at their sides and solitary adult bears lumber across the tundra. On this unique northern adventure, you will take a special eve ning trip in addition to our daytime excursions to observe nightfall on the pristine and isolated tundra landscape — an unforgettable experience. It is a rare opportunity to view the tundra at night, when the northern environs provide an eerie and remote adventure. If conditions are right, you may also be able to observe the aurora borealis, or northern lights, as radiating colors illuminate the night sky. An increased awareness of the importance of protecting the bears, along with growing tourist interest in their yearly migration, has brought about a sense of commitment by the people of Churchill to help these mighty animals migrate safely through their now famous town. Join us on this unforgettable Arctic journey to view polar bears in the wild.

We invite you to experience friendly, tropical Costa Rica. Your family adventure begins in the Turrialba region where you will witness an active volcano and ride the rolling rapids of the Pejibaye River. While in Tortuguero, children who participate in this program will meet their pen pals with whom they’ve exchanged letters before the trip. You will continue to the sunny Pacific coast, where we comb volcanic sand beaches and zip line through treetops for an unforgettable bird’s-eye view of the rain forest. Visit Manuel Antonio National Park, a natural sanc tuary for sloths, coatimundis agoutis, whitefaced monkeys, squirrel monkeys, scarlet macaws and many other species. Along the way you will meet ordinary Costa Ricans, admirable people who honor, respect and work to maintain a harmonious relationship with nature. We hope you will join us for an educational and rewarding adventure in Costa Rica.
