Immagine fotografica scarnificata. Purificata, libera “da tutte le informazioni superflue per identificare un unico ceppo d’origine”. Fotografia che per Riccardo Pocci, artista toscano adottato dal mondo, di fatto è agnello sacrificale, sacrificabile e quindi da sacrificare all’altare della pittura, semplice ma calcolato gesto premonitore che porta al superamento del percepito dallo sguardo e riconduce all’essenza della coscienza. Togliere il colore. Togliere le scale di grigi “lasciando intuire lo scheletro”. Procedere per negazione con mano che pare umile ma che, al contrario, rivela l’oltraggiosa ambizione di svelare il segreto dell’origine di una realtà reale per evidenza dunque ingannevole per concetto. Per Pocci, riconsegnare alla luce la carta millimetrata-anima sottile della rappresentazione-equivale ad inchinarsi senza mai abbassare gli occhi a colei che egli stesso considera “maestra della prospettiva e del disegno occidentale”. Ma dall’inchino al ridurre ogni ricordo geometrico a vano orpello da cancellare il passo è davvero breve. Il diritto alla parola viene concesso soltanto ai materiali, alle masse e ai volumi. Un diritto ribadito attraverso un urlo arcaico scaturito dalle radici di ciò che all’uomo è stato costruito identificabile. Eppure, in questa rappresentazione riportata all’essenza primitiva, l’uomo pare assente. Assenza. Perdita del colore –perdita del padre. Qualcosa è mutato per sempre. Gli ultimi mesi hanno camminato nell’animo di Riccardo Pocci con l’incedere stridulo della carta vetrata. Assenza: assenza dell’uomo, assenza del battito cardiaco, assenza della vita. Alberi neri. Brush yourself: “restituire la sua giusta radice attraverso la pulitura da tutto ciò che è inutile e fuorviante”. Radice senza terra, città che non è luogo ma presa di coscienza nel rigoroso contrapporsi di luce e ombra. Brush: pennello, pennellata, spazzola, spazzolare, scopare sfiorare. Brush off: ignorare. E non è un caso che la città in questione – protagonista di un ciclo iconico che rimanda ad ulteriori cicli iconici passati e già futuri – sia Bruxelles, l’Europa incarnata ma senza carne. Bruxelles è Brussel, è brush yourself ed è dunque “pretesto per parlare del contemporaneo” e ribadirne lo smarrimento. Smarrimento di trovarsi di fronte a qualche cosa di noto e allo stesso tempo estraneo. Smarrimento nell’intuire una realtà segmentata nell’irreale discontinuità dei pallets che ingannano lo sguardo per poi riportarlo sulla retta via della sostanza liberata dall’apparenza. E questo anche grazie ad un linguaggio grafico che corteggia il fumetto e cede il passo all’illustrazione. Carta, carta intelata, tela, pallets, oli, chine, guoache su carta nera intelata.: Pocci è instancabile nella sua continua, sperimentazione di tecniche e supporti,un turbine di insoddisfatta soluzione perfetta nell’imperfezione di un anelito mai sazio al differente riconoscibile.
A bare picture. pure and free from all other superfluous detail in order to determine a unique origin. A picture that for Riccardo Pocci, a Tuscan artist adopted by all the world, is effectively a sacrificial lamb to be sacrificed on the altar of a painting; a simple but premeditated deed that leads to overcome what is perceived and brings back to the essence of conscience. Taking the colour away, removing the greyscale to allow us to see the essential frame. He goes on eliminating with his hand that seems humble but which, on the contrary, reveals the outrageous ambition to unveil the secret of reality even if it is deceptive. For Pocci, giving life to graph paper, the soul of representation, is equivalent to bowing without ever glancing down to that reality which is considered “ the mistress of perspective and of western drawing”. The artist does not want to follow precisely the rules of the perspective because the right of speech is given only to material, mass and volume and the simple materials used are those built by man a long time ago. However in the representation brought back to its primitive essence man is absent. Absence. The loss of colour. The loss of his father. Something has changed forever. In these last months Riccardo’s soul has been scratched as if by sandpaper. Absence. The absence of the man. The absence of that heartbeat. The absence of life. Black trees. Brush yourself means restoring the roots through the cleaning of what is useless and misleading. They are roots without earth, a city which is not a place but his consciousness and he expresses this in the rigorous opposition of light and darkness. Brush off means to ignore, to take no notice of something and a brush can be a paintbrush, a brushstroke or a broom. It is not by accident that the city in question – the protagonist of an iconic style that refers to further iconic styles, past cycles but already in the future – is Bruxelles. A represented Europe but without any real references and characters. Bruxelles is Brussels, it is “brush yourself” and it is therefore the opportunity to talk about the contemporary world and reaffirm its bewilderment. Bewilderment in front of something known but at the same time alien. Bewilderment in perceiving a reality, fragmented in the unreal discontinuity of the pallets, which deceives the eye to then bring it back to the substance freed from appearance. And this is also thanks to the graphic language that woes the cartoon and then becomes illustration. Paper, canvas, pallets, oils, inks, gouache and black canvas paper. Pocci is untirable in his continuous experimentation of techniques and of materials, a turbine of solutions, incomplete but perfect in their imperfection which gives them his special touch of originality.
