Students CPR Certified

Through the first two weeks of February, Mrs. Ackerman’s Health Care Occupations class at Roswell High School took a CPR Course. The students learned everything they should know about CPR. They got to practice situations where they would have to perform CPR on someone. They practiced on infant and adult dummies and even got to use an AED to get a feel of how to use it. By the end of the course, the students said they felt confident they could give CPR to someone who needed it. Many students talked about working with dummies and giving compression to adults as one of the hardest parts. Some students struggled to give compressions to the right depth, which is one of the struggles of working with a dummy.
Becoming CPR certified in a little amount of time, was a great opportunity for the Health Care Occupation classes. The students know everything they should about giving CPR. Including rate-ratio, the depth for adults, children, and infants. As well as showing how to use an AED, knowing their limitations, and how to make sure they are giving effective breaths.
The Health Care Occupations class has already learned how to check Blood Pressure, Pulse, and Respiration. The class is now learning how to check their glucose, find veins, and draw blood.
FFA Highlight

FFA is an organization at Roswell High focused on leadership, agriculture, and safety.
We interviewed the advisors, president and treasurer. Some of the things they are looking forward to are Judging and NMLC. So you may wonder what Judging is, to Tatum Johnson, “judging is a season of leadership, growing, and learning new skills”. Some judging categories they will be doing this year are AG Mechanics, Homesite, Livestock, Floriculture, Wildlife, and Dairy.
The next topic we talked about is NMLC. NMLC is a two-day event where FFA members from all over NM get together in Las Cruces to learn about basic skills and leadership. Johnson said “ I did go my freshman year in Albuquerque and now it is in Las Cruces and it will be a little different but still a good experience.” She is looking forward to it as it is her Senior year. FFA is a great place to learn about leadership and learn about yourself as a person. You also make new friends and get a lifetime of experience.
RHS Proudest Moments

One of the proudest moments for RHS this year is the improvements made to our classrooms. Some of that spending was in CTE programs like our motor, welding, wood shops and in our culinary arts program. Other improvements inlcude Promethean Boards in every classroom, a new sound system in the gynmasium and improvements to our safety systems.
There are other achievements like our Credit Recovery system that has proved to be successful in the past and previous state titles for our sports teams. We can't wait to see the rest of the achievements we have in the 2022- 2023 year.
Seniors, What's Next?

Kelvin Alarcon would like to attend the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in New York and intends to be a marine engineer.
Jordan Garcia plans to attend New Mexico State University (NMSU) in Las Cruces to pursue his bachelor's degree in computer science.
Jorge Gomez plans to attend Texas Tech to pursue his career in accounting.
DeLaney DeNio plans to attend either Eastern New Mexico University in Portales or NMSU to pursue her career in education.
Jacqueline Pappas plans to attend UNM in Albuquerque and is currently undecided on her career path.
Lilleah Lopez plans to attend Oregon State University for marine biology and marine studies.

Spring Sports Preview

As we all know spring sports are up next with focal points in track, tennis, powerlifting, baseball, and softball. The majority of the coaches are taking new approaches to their methods of winning. Coach Fuller is implementing a “Speed Program” where it’s half the work with twice the effort. Coach McDonald is focusing on “fundamentals and getting as many people to the state tournament as possible.”
Last Year Powerlifting and Track had multiple state qualifiers. Christian Hernandez was the star of the show and still is. He’s a returning senior ready to defend his state title which he won last year. Coyote Track also had some dominating people but, Malia Dumlao is the talk of the track team. She is Roswell’s fastest hurdler, after competing in state last year Malia won 2nd in the 100-meter hurdles. Malia is signed to run track for the University of New Mexico.
Coach Lujan and the athletic director, Mr. Sandoval is excited for baseball this year. Lujan claims that “we have multiple returners and a solid senior core”. When asked who the top prospects were, Coach Lujan responded, “Top three: Ivan, Cheeto, and Jerry.” Lujan believes that his team will be a threat this year especially with his focus set on “intensity, efficiency, and pitching.”
With Tennis coming up you should keep your eyes peeled for Marcos Perez, Maddy Hicks, Ferrel Garcia, Karyme Lopez, and Otsie Lackey, people Coach McDonald listed as his top prospects for Tennis this year. He feels as individuals they each have the ability to go to state.
Mr. Sandoval is also super excited for the upcoming softball season. “They still have a chance to win 12-14 games, they should have a successful season. ”Mr. Sandoval responded. With all of the hard work, these upcoming sports will thrive this spring season.
