J

erry Rich shrugs off the fact that he is one of only a few people to have ever actually inquired about membership at Augusta National. Had he joined, his significant energies and do‑it‑yourself resolve might not have been applied to creating a tough and beautiful track in northern Illinois that played host to the world’s top female golfers at last summer’s Solheim Cup. Jerry and Betty Rich’s dream began to intersect when a small bit of the farm they had built by amassing adjacent farms into a 1,820‑acre showcase of nature and agriculture. This gave way to one golf hole and a practice area, then three holes, then six. Inspired by Augusta and the encouragement of friends Bob Murphy and Sam Snead, Rich completed 18 holes in 1997. After interviewing five architects, he discovered he could draw the plans himself ‑ and in typical fashion, he did. He even hired a construction company that had never done a golf course. While he was influenced by Augusta, he also took inspiration from Dick Wilson’s Pine Tree in Florida. Within five years, Rich Harvest Links was ranked the fifth-best new private course in the U.S., beating out designs from Nicklaus, Dye and Wieskopf. Rich Harvest Links was also awarded a Top 100 pick from Golf Digest and was ranked second Best New Course in the country in the “condition” category. For many that would be enough. For Jerry Rich, it was just the start. In 1998, with his life‑long friend Don Springer, he established the Kids Golf Foundation of Illinois that by 2004 had introduced over 150,000 Illinois children to the game. Of all his accomplishments, he hopes the Foundation will be his legacy. Rich Harvest has been the site for the foundation’s fundraisers, including the Bob Murphy Pro‑Am and Chrysler All‑Star Shoot‑Out. 2

RICH HARVEST FARMS

The course, like everything Jerry Rich undertakes, is a testament to his drive, tastes, sense of fun and devotion to the game. Rich Harvest Farms’ 18 holes is divided in half, with the front nine known as the Gold Course and the back nine known as the Silver Course. Each hole has been thoughtfully named. Gold No. 3, “Snead’s Crotch”, is a 362‑yard par 4 with a 90‑degree dogleg and the beckon to “walk with a legend, tee shot 230 with a draw.” “Devil’s Elbow”, Silver No. 4, warns of the “most demanding tee shot in golf.” In a gesture to Augusta, the par 3 Silver No. 5 is “Amen - Holy Stone” and offers a caution to “check the wind” when hitting over a brontosaurus shaped pond. Caddies wear the white jump suits and green hats so distinctive to the Masters. There are 18 pins, but 45 potential holes. Wilson was a proponent of large greens, sand bunkers and clever doglegs, all found on No. 4 of the Gold Course, which on the card is a 200‑yard par 3 but can also be played as a 278‑yard par 4, requiring a gamma ray tee shot through the trees. There are 105 bunkers to contend with, along with wetlands and natural waste areas, giving the layout its dichotomous character. A picture-perfect farm, an award-winning course, a successful and growing foundation for kids. In 2009, Rich added to his course’s legacy by hosting the Solheim Cup, one of the premiere women’s golf events in the world. The Solheim Cup features matches between the top European-born players form the Ladies European Tour (LET) and the top U.S.-born players from the Ladies Professional Golf Association competing in a format similar to the Ryder Cup. When hosted at Rich Harvest Farms, the U.S. team, led by Paula Creamer and Michelle Wie, defeated Europe 16-12.

The Solheim Cup followed a successful collegiate tournament held at Rich Harvest Farms in 2007, when the course hosted the NCAA Central Regional. www.niuhuskies.com

orthern Illinois University women’s golf head coach Pam Tyska holds the distinction of being NIU’s longest tenured head coach. Tyska is in her 24th year at the helm of the NIU women’s golf program after arriving in DeKalb in 1986. Northern Illinois responded quickly to Tyska’s teaching, winning two tournaments and placing in the top five an amazing 10 times in 12 tourneys during the 1986-87 campaign. Tyska and the Huskies have continued that success throughout her career, as she has led NIU to 19 first-place finishes, 28 runner-up marks and 97 top-five showings in 245 tournaments. Pam Tyska Head Coach 24th Season Illinois State, 1983

The fall of 2009 saw Tyska accomplish one of her career highlights away from the field of competition. Tyska spearheaded the NIU men’s and women’s golf team’s participation in the 2009 Solheim Cup, one of the premier events in women’s golf. Thanks in large part to the efforts of Tyska, NIU golfers were on the course as ball-spotters for one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world. It was the first time in Solheim Cup history collegiate golfers had been used in such a capacity. On the course, Tyska’s team carried the excitement from the summer at the Solheim into a successful fall season. The Huskies won the 25th Annual Huskie Classic by outdueling Loyola by seven strokes over the final 18. The Huskies also placed second at the NIU Invitational at Brasada Ranch in Oregon. The 2008-09 season was highlighted by Tyska disciple Kim Hunley. Hunley recorded two of the best 18-hole performances in NIU history with a 70 at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational and a 72 at the NIU Snowbird Intercollegiate, the third and ninth-best scores in the record book. Under Tyska’s guidance, Hunley has the best career scoring average in program history with just one semester left to play. As a team, the Huskies recorded four top-five finishes.

individual titles at the Snowbird Intercollegiate and the Western Illinois Invitational, respectively. Jessica Parmenter had a solid first season of collegiate golf, posting three top-10 finishes. Tyska’s expertise has gone well beyond coaching tactics and has extended into her skill as a recruiter. Included in her resume of talented pupils is Nicole Jeray, selected as the National Player of the Year by both Ram Golf and Golfweek Magazine in 1990-91. Jeray won eight individual medals for the Cardinal and Black between 1989 and 1991 before joining the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour. Tyska’s other pupils at NIU include Shelley Wendels-Gilk, who earned her LPGA card in 1996. Allison Beam began her first season on the FUTURES Golf Tour in the summer of 2003 and Kara Soderberg started in 2004. The Huskies’ achievements under Tyska are not limited to the course. Northern Illinois has had consistent representation on the National Golf Coaches Association Academic All-America honor roll, a prestigious list that includes 15 Huskies sporting grade point averages of 3.50 or higher, including 2008 recipients Abbie Many and Devon Harteneck. Many became the 11th Huskie during the Tyska era to earn multiple NGCA Academic All-America accolades. NIU recorded a perfect mark of 1,000 and ranked in the top 10 percent of all women’s golf squads in the nation in the NCAA’s 2009 Academic Progress Rate Report. It’s the sixth-straight year Tyska’s squad has maintained a perfect APR.

Tyska’s Career Highlights • National Golf Coaches Association Coach of the Year, 1991 • 2006 NGCA Gladys Palmer Meritorious Service Award • LPGA Midwest Region Coach of the Year, 1994, 1996 • NCAA YES Guest Clinician, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999 • Led NIU to 19 tournament titles and 28 runner-up finishes • Mentored NIU Huskie individuals to 93 top-five finishes

The Huskies had one of their best seasons in recent memory in 2007-08, posting six top-10 finishes, winning the Huskie Classic and sweeping the Snowbird Intercollegiate. NIU’s victory at the Snowbird was the Huskies’ first at that event since 1987. In addition, Hunley and Abbie Many took home the 4

• Coached 15 NGCA All-American Scholars • Tutored Lisa Bailey to NIU’s first All-MAC award in 2005 • Spearheaded NIU golf’s participation in 2009 Solheim Cup • Named 2010 Illinois Site Coordinator of the Year by the Kids Golf Foundation

Tyska owns a host of regional and national awards as well, winning Midwest Region Coach of the Year accolades from the NGCA in 1991 and from the LPGA in 1994 and 1996. The veteran links boss’ reputation has earned the respect of her peers, as she has been selected to the elite group of clinicians for the NCAA’s Youth Education Through Sports (YES) Clinics every year they have been held since 1993. The clinics help potential collegiate golfers in their development with discussions on the role of academics, goal-setting and mental skill development on and off the course, as well as recruiting and admission requirements. She was also instrumental in founding “Get a Girl Golfing” clinics at NIU in 1998 and the NIU Hooka-aKid on Golf in the Schools program in 2003. In January 2003, Tyska was honored with the inaugural National Golf Coaches Association Founders Award at the annual NGCA Convention in Orlando, Fla. In 2006, Tyska received the NGCA’s most prestigious individual honor, the Gladys Palmer Meritorious Service Award. The award recognizes outstanding service to women’s golf “above and beyond the call of duty.” Her string of awards continued in 2010, when the Kids Golf Foundation named Tyska an Illinois Site Coordinator of the Year for her work as clinic coordinator of the LPGA/ Solheim Ronald McDonald House Junior Golf Clinic.

assistant coach ASHLEY ANAST A

shley Anast is in her third season as the graduate assistant coach for the Northern Illinois University women’s golf team. Anast, a graduate of Portland State, came to NIU after spending the fall of 2007 as an assistant coach at her alma mater. A native of Littleton, Colo., she was a three-year letterwinner for the Vikings women’s golf team from 2005-07. Anast finished her senior year at Portland State with an 80.1 scoring average, the best of her career. She played 83 rounds of competitive golf during her career, which ranks seventh all-time at PSU, and her 80.31 career scoring average ranks eighth all-time.

Ashley Anast Graduate Assistant Coach 3rd Season Portland State, 2007

In her three seasons at Portland State, Anast was named to the academic all-conference team in 2005 and 2006, the All-Big Sky Conference second team in 2006, and to the NGCA All-America Scholar Team in 2005. She was a member of the Vikings’ 2004-05 Big Sky Conference Championship team. She was also a three-time academic all-conference selection. She scored a hole in one at the BYU Dixie Classic April 4, 2007 during her senior year. Anast graduated from Portland State in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in public health and spanish.

Tyska not only excels at teaching the game, but as a student of it. On Sept. 14, 2002, Tyska took out her driver and fired a 278-yard shot down the fairway which was good enough for her to qualify for the REMAX World Long Drive World Championships in Mesquite, Nev. She continues to compete and has held a Top 10 World Ranking with a qualifying drive of 298 yards. Tyska also sat on the NCAA Midwest Regional Selection Committee from 1989 through 1995 and on the NGCA Awards Committee from 1990 through 1996. She served a stint on the NGCA Board of Directors from 1996-2001. In addition to her extensive list of NCAA appointments, Tyska is a member of the NGCA, LPGA, PGA, and the National Association of Golf Educators. She is an advisor for The Fairway Network, the Illinois Junior Golf Association and the Women’s Western Golf Association.

hen a Northern Illinois University student-athlete steps onto campus in DeKalb, Illinois, they are stepping onto the national stage. Located just 65 miles west of downtown Chicago, the nation’s third-largest media market, Huskie student-athletes are a part of one of this country’s great sports towns. During the 2007-08 season, the NIU football team took on Iowa at Soldier Field in the fall, while the baseball team faced Notre Dame at U.S. Cellular Field in the spring. In 2011, the Huskies will return to Soldier Field to play Wisconsin. DeKalb’s proximity to Chicago also affords local citizens, including NIU students, the opportunity to experience all that the city has to offer, from cultural events and festivals, to restaurants and theatres. Three airports – O’Hare, Midway and Rockford – are within an hour’s drive of NIU. While it is close to the “Windy City” and the city’s ever-expanding western suburbs, DeKalb maintains a unique character and offers a quality existence to its nearly 45,000 residents. DeKalb is successfully combining the old and the new as brick-paved streets and historic homes co-exist with a growing business sector and brand new residential and commercial developments. In addition to many activities, including Huskie athletics, available on campus, DeKalb is famous for its annual “CornFest,” welcoming students back to town in late August.

Soldier Field (right), the home of the Chicago Bears, is the Huskies’ home away from home. NIU opened the 2007 season there against Iowa and will play Wisconsin in 2011 at the site.

DeKalb’s CornFest (left) and Taste of Chicago (right) are two popular summertime events. The Taste leads up to Chicago’s Fourth of July festivities, while CornFest coincides with the students’ return to campus in late August. 20

he Huskie Indoor Training (H.I.T) Center is the newest athletic training facility to open on Northern Illinois University’s campus. Joining the Jeffrey and Kimberly Yordon Center, which opened in August of 2007, the H.I.T. Center serves as the indoor practice home for NIU’s baseball, men’s and women’s golf and softball programs which opened November 1, 2007. Located southwest of the Convocation Center in what was formerly known as the John Deere Building, the H.I.T. Center provides studentathletes a place to develop their skills during the winter months. The H.I.T. Center measures 9,800 square feet and features an Astroturf carpet floor and sport specific lighting. Space is divided equally for baseball/softball and golf. Retractable netting allows for the redistribution of practice space. Four full-size batting cages are located on the baseball/softball side of the facility, while the golf side features space for six practice tees surrounded by netting, and a putting green with multiple target holes. Prior to the opening of the H.I.T. Center, NIU’s spring sport student-athletes used space in the Rec Center or on the east side of Huskie Stadium. Now they have a place of their own to call home.

The netting in the H.I.T. Center (above) can be rearranged to distribute the space appropriately for any of the four teams that use the facility. The H.I.T. Center provides plenty of room for oneon-one instruction, as NIU women’s golf coach Pam Tyska demonstrates (right).

NIU Executive Vice President Dr. Eddie Williams dedicated the H.I.T. Center, Nov. 1, 2007 in front of coaches and student-athletes from each of the four sports that benefit from the facility. www.niuhuskies.com
