THE EVERYTHING FIX-IT BOOK

Pest Removal You may need to call in an expert in pest removal, whether it’s an exterminator for an insect problem or an animal removal expert for larger critters. Like any other service, you get what you pay for. A licensed, insured expert who comes recommended by friends or neighbors and holds membership in a recognized pest control association is a good start. Also, check with local government offices or wildlife conservation associations to find out what options are legal and recommended in your area. Be sure that you understand all the details before signing any pest removal contracts. They should provide the following information: • • • • •

What the pest is How the pest will be removed What chemicals (if any) will be used and what their effects are Whether the work is guaranteed and for how long How animals will be treated (Some areas don’t allow animals to be relocated; if they have to be destroyed, you should know that up front so that you can make an informed decision.)

A good pest control expert will not only assist you to get rid of any existing pests, but can also advise you on prevention measures. The key to animal removal, for example, is to prevent the animal (or another like it) from re-entering the house—which is why killing the animal won’t necessarily solve your problem in the long term. For insect control, ensure that you understand your ongoing responsibilities (annual checks or resprays may be needed to keep the guarantee valid). Whatever pest or animal you’re dealing with, remember that they’re part of a bigger picture. However much you hate snakes, for example, they have the benefit of reducing mice populations. The trick is to keep the animals where they can go about their lives without interfering with yours.
