RGS Foundation Supporters’ Review 2020/21 | 1

Kindness can be demonstrated in so many different ways, both collectively and individually.

2 | RGS Foundation Supporters’ Review 2020/21

Foreword When we set the goal, a few years ago, to raise funds to create 20 transformational bursaries it seemed a very ambitious target, and frankly, we were not sure if it was achievable. That we have raised enough funds since the Campaign was launched, to bring 20 young men to the RGS, is testament to the generosity and kindness of so many supporters, and the hard work of RGS staff particularly in our Foundation Office. This successful conclusion has come about due to your collective endeavours and, as our supporters, we can all share in the joy of seeing 20 bright boys join the School who would otherwise have been unable to access an RGS education for financial reasons. To quote a current member of staff: “I just wanted to say a deep heartfelt thank-you for making me more proud today of being a member of this school than at any point in my time here. Those boys will have their lives transformed by that money, and in turn, the whole school will continue to be transformed by their presence here as we continue this journey.” As we prepared to announce the successful conclusion of this campaign, we were surprised and delighted to receive a letter informing us of the legacy gift from the widow of an Old Guildfordian. George left the RGS in 1919 and attributed his success in life to his education here. We were aware

that a sum of money was to be left to the School by his widow, Agnes who became a member of our Beckingham Society. Agnes passed away in 2020 and the last few years of her life were particularly difficult with lockdown and failing health. The actions of a member of our staff, Jenny Rothwell, simply by visiting (when allowed) and by keeping in touch by letter or by phone call, were not motivated by reward but were simply acts of kindness from one human being to another. We were all very sad to have lost a dear supporter of the School but delighted that she decided to alter her will and staggered to learn that she had left the School a million pounds. A little kindness goes a long way and now even more boys will be able to benefit from the George & Agnes Pullen Bursary Award in the future. I wish to thank all of you, who, motivated by similar acts of kindness, have contributed to this wonderful School over the past year. All your contributions, named or anonymous, appear in this sixth edition of our Supporters’ Review as a small gesture of our immense gratitude for your collective and generous support.

Bursary Support The RGS Bursary Programme offers two types of bursary support.

Entrance Bursaries

Emergency Fee Support

The majority of funds are spent on means-tested entrance bursaries, offering financial support to boys entering the School in Year 7, and more rarely Years 9 and 12. These bursaries are offered for the duration of each pupil’s time at the RGS. They are not dependent on academic performance, but are financially reassessed every year.

We also reserve a smaller fund each year, to help existing RGS families who get into unexpected financial difficulty, often relating to redundancy, death or divorce and, more recently, the impact of COVID-19. In these cases, we provide means-tested short-term support to help minimise disruption to pupils’ education. With our limited funds we prioritise boys in public exam years, at GCSE or A Level.

In 2020/21, the RGS gave financial support to 71 boys. In the last six years, the number of transformational bursaries (80% or over) has increased from 45% of those awarded to 56%.

Impact of the Bursary Programme Hussein Hassanali OG 2002

Hussein has progressed through university and his career as a dentist with flying colours. An Associate Dentist at Woodthorpe Dental Centre, Fellow of the British Academy of Aesthetic Implant and Restorative Dentistry (BAAIRD), an Editorial Advisor of Young Dentist magazine, an active member of the Colgate Dentist Advisory Network, and in 2019 short-listed for the Young Dentist of the Year Award. A frequent guest on the PracticePlan podcast and other medical podcasts, he is keen to improve mental health within the medical industry. This is his story.

“Without my assisted place, there was no way my family would have been able to afford for me to attend… RGS gave me more than just an education. No door was ever closed and I was encouraged to seek out every available opportunity. This has allowed me to define the person I have grown to become, allowing me to take each step with confidence, knowing that the RGS has prepared me as best as possible for whatever may come my way.”

My route to studying at the University of Liverpool and postgraduate journey was more challenging than most. I narrowly missed the grades I needed to study dentistry, but I was determined to follow my path. That’s one of the things the RGS teaches you, it’s very character building. IQ will always be a key tenet of the School, but it’s about being able to thrive in a competitive environment. To do this your adversity and social quotients are just as important. Developing these skills is something the RGS has always been great at. And not being afraid of failure because I learnt a lot about myself through the process. It’s these reserves of being strong when faced with challenges that have truly helped not only

The Martin Luther King quote best reflects my time at the RGS .... “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”

myself but all those on the frontline over the last two years. I love being a dentist. It’s very specialised and it’s very niche. I feel fortunate that I am in a career I was meant to do, and I am thriving at. So much of your character is made at School. I certainly enjoyed my time there and benefitted from being with people who were eager to learn and to experiment with ideas; and it’s great this continues with such forums as The Unchained Library.* During my time we were given the opportunity to explore life beyond the School gates by meeting many successful OGs in different industries and being told “this could be your future … your career is up to you.”

It was my primary teacher who suggested I apply for a bursary place, and my school and the RGS did a great job in steering us through the process. The bursary programme helped my family enormously and my parents are still extremely grateful to the support we received from Mr Young (the previous Headmaster). I was always treated as an equal and this is one of the great things about the scheme. It’s important that we still believe in and continue to support the bursary programme because its impact potentially echoes far into the future. Ultimately, the support given could be to the benefit of everyone, as somewhere out there is a boy who could achieve great things if given the right support.

Supporter Spotlight

Because of the generosity of George Pullen OG 1919 and his wife Agnes, and their decision to bequeath the Foundation a gift of £1 million, we are delighted to announce the creation of the ‘George & Agnes Pullen Bursary Award’.

This legacy will help educate RGS boys in perpetuity.

08 | RGS Foundation Supporters’ Review 2020/21

Supporting bright local boys with an outstanding education has always been central to the School’s philosophy. Over a century ago, George Pullen was one of those lucky bright local boys who was given a bursary to attend the RGS. When he left, George joined the Chartered Bank as a humble bank clerk who rose to Chairman in 1967. He always attributed his success in life to his education at the RGS. Agnes was born in Scotland in 1922 before moving to London after the war. A former model, she worked as a buyer for Fenwick’s Department Store rising through the ranks to become Chief Buyer. In 1960, Agnes made the best decision she’s ever made (her own words) by marrying George. The couple spent much of their life overseas, especially in the Bank’s traditional area of operation, but also North America, the Middle East and Africa.

Their life together was one of excitement and travel, and balancing big business with diplomatic parties, and always supporting each other. Sadly, George died in 1994 and Agnes returned to the UK and settled in Eastbourne. Agnes continued George’s fondness for the RGS and became a loyal supporter of the Bursary Campaign, benefitting boys in the same way her husband had received financial support 100 years earlier. We were all incredibly saddened by her death last year, and we were staggered to learn that she had left the School a million pounds. This incredible act of generosity will ensure the education of many bright local boys for years to come. And just like her husband, George Pullen, these boys will thrive because of an outstanding education.

The Foundation

We did it !!

Twenty for 2020 We did it! Or better said, you did it! All of you: OGs, parents, current and former staff and governors, current students. Over the past year with all the challenges inherited from the pandemic, you came together and achieved the remarkable result of funding 20 transformational bursaries at the RGS. Congratulations!

This remarkable achievement was possible through your participation in answer to our calls, through funds raised in the Giving Days and Telephone Campaign, through your regular gifts to the Bursary Campaign.

12 | RGS Foundation Supporters’ Review 2020/21

Giving Day 2020 Our 2020 Giving Day focussed on uniting all our community: our digital School House themed competition encouraged an incredible 1361 of you to raise over £100,000 over 28 hours. All funds raised will go towards the bursary programme and hardship and emergency fee support. Congratulations to Austen who topped the leaderboard for the highest number of donors, and Powell who took top billing for funds raised. Our Giving Days play a vital part in the Bursary Campaign. It is the one time in the year our whole community unites to make a real difference. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped us achieve our goal of Twenty for 2020.

#RGSThanksGiving In a change from our annual Giving Day and because of our successful completion of the Twenty for 2020 Campaign, we thought that we would take the opportunity to give thanks to all those in our community who have supported us.

Introducing Monica Popa Development Director

Monica joined RGS as Development Director in Michaelmas Term 2021 after 15 years working in development and alumni relations at the University of Oxford.

Having grown up in Romania is there a big difference between Romanian schools and UK schools? Is there a bursary system for Romanian independent schools?

willingness to make a difference.

I can’t really answer this question, as when I grew up I was only aware of one type of school, the one closest to you, but much has changed since then. It was only when I moved to the UK that I realised that schools came in different shapes and sizes. My parents still operated on the old model and as a result I ended up at the school closest to my house. I was then fortunate that they ventured a little bit further afield and I went to a great Sixth Form college which allowed me to dream of applying to Oxford.

I could answer this by citing the biggest donations that I was involved with but it wouldn’t necessarily reflect what I consider to be my greatest achievement. What I found most satisfying was understanding the motivations of donors and finding ways to connect them to some of the projects which needed urgent funding and which changed the lives of many of the students at Oxford.

You studied History and Modern Languages at Lincoln College, Oxford. What made you decide to pursue a career in fundraising?

You’ve worked in five of the Oxford University colleges, prior to the RGS, what would you say was your biggest career achievement?

What attracted you to the RGS and what are you most looking forward to in your role as Development Director?

This is a simple answer: the focus and commitment of the School in widening access to education to all smart boys, I was always fascinated by people and irrespective of financial means. I believe events, and history seemed like the most that you have to intervene early and logical subject to satisfy that curiosity. recognise talent to allow children to I had wonderful tutors and the subject become the best versions of themselves led me to a career which involves people, and that has a ripple-down effect in our understanding their motivations and their world and our societies. The RGS is a buzzing place, you can feel the excitement all around you. To help open the doors to this incredible institution that has been here for over 500 years to others is a great privilege. One that I would love to play a 14 | RGS Foundation Supporters’ Review 2020/21 part in.

The Road to 2035 The ‘Road to 2035’ is our vision to create an endowment fund for the RGS that will allow our bursary programme to become financially secure by the year 2035, coinciding with the 525th celebrations of the RGS. Such an achievement will mean the School will be able to support 1 in 5 boys. To do this, we aim to raise £13 million by 2035 alongside our regular annual gifts and pledges. We realise that the goal is ambitious, but we also believe that with your support, we will achieve our goal and the gift of education will continue to be passed on to future generations of boys. We will need your continued help and support. Why are we, as a school, determined to continue this path to full merit-based open access? For the simple reason and

underlying belief that education matters. That the years spent at RGS can make the ultimate difference not only in the life of an individual boy, but that collectively, RGS boys can influence and change the society in which they live. We want to go back to the founding ethos of the School and open doors to every bright local boy irrespective of his financial circumstances. We want to enshrine the ethos of 500 years of history and education for generations to come. Creating an endowment fund for the RGS means that the vision of educating the greatest number of talented and smart boys will extend to the next 500 years. We are one special community with one special ethos. Join us on the ‘Road to 2035’ and beyond.
