Education is the cornerstone of progress, shaping individuals and societies in ways that extend far beyond the classroom. A great education is not simply about acquiring knowledge; it is about developing critical thinking skills, fostering creativity, and instilling a lifelong love of learning. Schools are also places where students develop essential skills such as communication, collaboration, and kindness.
It is inspiring to read our featured Old Guildfordians, Ian El-Mokadem OG 1986, Paul Landless OG 1996, and Sachein Sanmugam OG 2024, highlight not just the RGS’s academic excellence, but also the impact of its values and extracurricular opportunities in shaping who they are today.
But access to quality education remains a challenge for many, with inequalities often rooted in socio-economic factors. Addressing these inequalities requires a collective effort from schools and communities, such as our own, to ensure every child, regardless of background, has access to an education necessary for success.
We currently support 68 boys with their RGS education, but we aim to do more. At the heart of the Road to 2035 is our ambition to support 1 in 7 boys, or 140 in total. The power of collective giving is evident throughout this review, thanks to the success of the Telephone Campaign, £111,000 has been pledged to support our students, and bursary expenditure has risen by 15% over the last five years. Whether you’ve made a gift, pledged future support, or secured matched donations through your workplace, thank you. We are on the right road, and it’s all because of you.
I hope you will enjoy this edition and celebrate the progress we have made together on our journey. Thank you again for your support.
Dr Jon Cox Headmaster
Key Support Data
Thank you for supporting the RGS Bursary Programme. Our ambition is clear: to become one of the first UK independent schools to achieve full merit-based open access and your generosity is helping to turn this vision into reality.
We are incredibly grateful to the 539 families who have made a gift in this last financial year. We raised £280,864 in donations and future pledges of an incredible £106,602 which we will receive through Direct Debits over the coming years.
Because of your generosity and passion for education, 68 boys are currently benefiting from financial assistance, with 37 receiving life-changing fee remissions of 80% plus. This is a significant achievement, but there is still much to be done. Our goal is to extend financial support to 1 in 7 talented boys who have the potential to thrive at the RGS, and deserve to be here, but lack the financial means to do so.
Initiatives such as the Telephone Campaign and our upcoming Giving Day are critical in helping us realise our ambitions. When our community comes together, we have the power to create lasting change.

Our first King’s Benefactors
Kate & Ian El-Mokadem OG 1986
In 2017 Kate and Ian El-Mokadem became the first King’s Benefactors of the RGS Bursary Programme paving the way for and energising new donors to join us.
Ian, a seasoned CEO and NonExecutive Director at leading firms, and Kate, a Governor at the London Academy of Excellence, Stratford (LAE), share a deep commitment to education. Their belief in the importance of widening access to the RGS led them to support the RGS Bursary Programme, funding a full seven-year education for one promising student, Sachein.
This decision to support a boy with a full bursary was sparked after an RGS reunion, as they reflected on the impact the School had on Ian’s own journey. Having attended schools
around the world, Ian found a unique sense of stability, kindness and academic ambition at the RGS.
“The high expectations for academic performance were clear, but there was also a genuine culture of kindness and respect. I felt part of the community immediately. It wasn’t just about excelling; it was about excelling with integrity, supporting each other, and respecting those around you.”
Kate and Ian’s support of the RGS Bursary Programme is part their longer-term commitment to enable young people to gain access to a great education.
Sachein with Kate & Ian El-Mokadem OG 1986 who were the King’s Benefactors who generously sponsored Sachein through his RGS education.
the ability to make a real difference in a young person’s life, that’s what matters.
They have been delighted to play a role in Sachein’s academic progress and personal growth. And when they finally met Sachein, he was exactly the kind of young man they had envisioned … hardworking, kind and engaging.
“For us, the most important thing is that Sachein is forging his own future. We’re proud to be a part of his journey, but he’s the one making it happen.”
Kate and Ian were the first King’s Benefactors of the RGS Bursary Programme, and their generosity set an inspiring precedent that has energised our community. Today we have built a strong and growing network of 539 families who are committed to making a difference. The couple are particularly impressed with the School’s leadership, particularly Headmaster Dr Cox, for putting in place a strong structure that will make a lasting difference.
The support they have given us, and other educational institutions such as the LAE and UCL, demonstrates the transformational impact of supporting education.
“If you reflect on everything you’ve done in your career, this is the thing that has the longest-lasting impact,” Ian says. “You can have business successes, acquisitions, and all sorts of other achievements, but the ability to make a real difference in a young person’s life, that’s what matters.”
Looking to the future, they encourage other alumni to support the Bursary Programme, the more alumni who get involved, the more students we can support.
In the end, it’s clear that Kate and Ian’s journey with the RGS is far from over. Their belief in the power of education to change lives is something that will continue to resonate with the RGS community for years to come.

Studying Business Management at Warwick University
Walking through the gates of the RGS for the first time was a mix of nerves and excitement. Coming from a small primary school in Crawley, I knew no one and was very shy to begin with. But the energy was infectious and the friendships immediate. Mr Wilkes (Head of First Form) was a huge presence - approachable, encouraging and exactly the kind of person you want guiding you through those first few months. The friends I’ve made from First Form up are friends for life.
RGS opened doors I didn’t know existed. It wasn’t just the academic challenge, though that was certainly there, it was the push towards confidence and independence. No one was spoon-fed. Instead, we were taught to think, to problemsolve and to own our learning. That mindset made the leap to university so much smoother. I felt the opportunities for sports, societies, young enterprise, everything … were limitless.
Cricket was my sport, and I still play at Warwick. But it was Young Enterprise that opened my eyes to what was possible. My team designed and sold bespoke 3D-printed baubles reaching the South East regional finals at Samsung’s London offices. That experience played a huge role in my decision to study business at Warwick.
By Sixth Form, I wasn’t just joining societies, I was creating them. A group of us launched a Business Management Society, connecting like-minded students eager to discuss ideas beyond the curriculum. Economics was another passion, driven by the brilliant teaching of Mr Stratford. I am incredibly grateful to both Mr Stratford and Mr Dunscombe, for helping me navigate the daunting world of university applications and career decisions. That level of personal support is rare, and I know friends at other schools didn’t have it.
The bursary that made all of this possible wasn’t just financial support, it was a gateway to an entirely different future. Being surrounded by an ambitious cohort inspired me to raise my own bar. There was no coasting, no taking the easy route. The expectation, both from teachers and classmates, was that you would push yourself, and that mindset sticks with you. I think my potential would have been very different if I had not gone to the RGS.
To current RGS students. Say yes to everything. Challenge yourself. Take risks.
You’ll only realise the impact of these years when you look back, and trust me, you’ll be glad you made the most of it.
The realisation of what my journey meant hit me, and probably my parents, at our Leavers’ Ball last year. Your time at the RGS is busy, you’re focussed on learning and sports and societies and being first in the lunch queue and making the most of every opportunity. It’s only when all the learning is done that you get a moment to stop and reflect and take in what an incredible experience you’ve been part of, and how this has changed you.
Meeting Ian and Kate, the King’s Benefactors who funded my bursary, brought it full circle. Despite the years between us being RGS boys, Ian and I shared very similar memories and the same RGS spirit. They believed in me before they even knew me, and for that, I am incredibly grateful.
Now at Warwick, I’m exploring finance and gearing up for placement opportunities. I look forward to keeping in touch with Ian and Kate, and the School over the years, but wherever my journey leads, the RGS will always be part of my story.
We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who supported this year’s campaign. Thank you to all those who took the time to talk to our fantastic callers - Ben, Ed, Freddie, George, Hamish, Jack, Mattia, Milo, Parus, Rohan, Stan, and Yazan.
And thank you to the team who championed the ‘Road to 2035,’ helping to pass on the gift of an RGS education to the next generation.
Thank you for being part of this journey with us.
Giving Day 2025
We are excited to announce our next appeal in support of the ‘Road to 2035’ campaign will be a Giving Day from Monday 13 – Friday 17 October.
This will be an opportunity for our whole community - students, parents and staff, both current and former – to showcase the philanthropic spirit that exists here at the RGS. With your help we will be able to offer bursary support to more boys from all socio-economic backgrounds.
We will be challenging the students through philanthropic, maths and sports events during our Giving Day House Challenges. Challenges will encourage match-funding from our supporters and the more sponsorship the boys receive through donations, the more matched funding will be unlocked.
Our aim is to reach our target of 500 donors. Every gift will help make an RGS education financially accessible to more local intellectually curious boys.
Leaving a legacy for generations to come
The Road to 2035 represents our vision to make an RGS education accessible to all students based on ability, not financial circumstances. Right now, 68 students receive financial support, but our ambition is to increase this number to 140, ensuring that 1 in 7 of our students has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their background.
The Beckingham Society is recognition of our supporters who have committed to leaving a gift to the RGS Bursary Programme in their Will. Pledging such a gift is one of the most enduring ways you can contribute to our 2035 vision, as these gifts strengthen our Enduring Bursary Endowment Fund, securing the education of bright local boys in perpetuity. Your legacy will change the lives of individual students and help us build a brighter future for society, as our students go on to make meaningful contributions to the world.
Paul Landless OG 1996, current parent, supporter and Beckingham Society member, is testament to the life-changing impact of the bursary programme and he knows first-hand the doors that an RGS education can open. Now a partner in an international law firm, working in derivatives, structured finance and fintech across Asia and London, Paul remains deeply committed to ensuring that other bright boys have the same opportunities he did and he is an enthusiastic champion for the bursary programme.
The School’s emphasis on academic excellence, independent and innovative thinking and resilience shaped his approach to challenges, both professionally and personally. Without the support he received here, he might not have had the same opportunities to succeed. If you are in a position to give, there is no better investment than education.
The RGS bursary programme can shape lives. I owe a debt of gratitude and want to make sure that other boys, regardless of their financial background and family situation, have the same chance to access a wider world of life opportunities.
For me, the RGS is special not just for its sense of scholarship, nor the diverse and witty characters of differing backgrounds in each year who become long-lasting friends, nor the inspirational teachers who shape you with fascinating ideas. The RGS is special for how it instils a deep sense of decency and togetherness, a quiet confidence that solutions can always be found when working together and a boldness in facing the new and unknown and carrying on through adversity.
I am glad I can give back to empower someone else with these life-long values and traits, and give that person a chance for a better life for themselves and their family.
Paul is also active in mobilising our alumni community, having hosted our Singapore reunions at the exquisite 1880 Club and our London reunion at the historic National Liberal Club last October, and plans are already underway for this year’s London reunion.
Leaving a legacy is more than a gift … it is an investment in the future. Join us on the Road to 2035 and help change lives for generations to come.
